Atlantis is a legendary city described by the Greek philosopher Plato (c. 429 – 347 BCE). Atlantis, a fabulously wealthy and advanced civilization, was swept into the sea and lost forever in a story which has captured the imagination of readers ever since. Without archaeological evidence or substantial information from sources besides Plato, the legend poses more questions than answers. Was there a real Atlantis? Was the story based on the ancient Minoan civilization? Was the disaster that swept away the city the eruption of Thera on Santorini in the Aegean, or was the whole story a fiction of Plato's to illustrate the glory of his own city of Athens and provide a moral example of what happened to cities who became greedy and neglected the rule of law? If it had been a real state then who founded it? Why do we know so little about it? Where is it now? These are all questions endlessly speculated by scholars and history enthusiasts without any satisfactory answers ever being reached.

Classic Profiles

This is a 1676 edition of The Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans, compared together by the 1st-century BCE Greek philosopher and historian Plutarch of Chaeronea, printed by the printer to the University of Cambridge John Hayes for the bookseller George Sawbridge. Originally written in Greek, Plutarch's Lives appeared in print for the first time as a Latin translation in 1470, and this English translation by Sir Thomas North was first published in 1579 from a French translation by James Amiot (Jacques Amyot). The text is a collection biographies of famous Greeks and Romans, including Alexander the Great, Pericles, Tiberius Gracchus, and Cicero. These figures left an indelible mark on history, their lives and achievements shaping the world as we know it.

Sir Thomas North (1535 – c. 1604) was an English translator and lawyer significantly contributing to English literature. His translation of Plutarch's Lives served as the primary source text for William Shakespeare's Roman plays, a testament to his work's enduring influence. This translation is regarded as one of the earliest examples of exceptional English prose. It was followed by another edition in 1595, which included updated biographies. A third edition of North's Plutarch was published in 1603, including even more translated Parallel Lives and a supplement of other biographies.

Jacques Amyot (1513-1593), a French scholar, writer, and translator, made substantial contributions to the field of translation and literature. His work on the translation of Plutarch's Lives (1559-1565) was instrumental in shaping the literary landscape of his time and laid the foundation for future translations and interpretations of Plutarch's work.

The first edition of this book was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. This dedication reflects the book's significance and provides a glimpse into the political and cultural landscape of the time, adding another layer of depth to the reader's understanding. Plutarch’s Lives helped shape the understanding of the classical Greek democracies and oligarchies of the Roman Republic and the role attributed to their founders—among them the legendary Lycurgus of Sparta and the Athenian lawgiver Solon.

You were convinced Solon hated you. He would scowl at you whenever you two met eyes at the academy, telling you to steer away from you and his group. You haven't even been at Decelis Academy for long, only just transferring a month ago.

"I don't know why he doesn't like me much," You complained to your best friend, Shion. Unlike his friend, Solon, Shion was super nice and bubbly.

"Hm, when did you first talk to him? Maybe you accidentally made a bad first impression?" Shion suggested.

"Um..." You tried to recall your first encounter with Solon. "I think it was a day after I transferred? I was on a night stroll- bad idea, I know- and I saw him there. I think we only said a few things to each other before parting ways, he didn't seem too irritated talking to me."

Shion's eyes widened, "Y/n... was it a full moon?"

"I don't remember, I literally have goldfish memory, maybe?"

"Oh, oh no..." You were getting concerned. What does he mean by that? "I'll let you figure that out yourself. You should try talking to him. What do you think of him, y/n?"

"Well..." You had to admit, even if he was an asshole towards you, he was really pretty. "He's not the worst looking? And... he's pretty nice to you guys from what I've seen, I think?"

"You sound a little confused. Do you like him or no?" You just shrugged. "Okay, I'll leave you alone. Night, bestie." Shion left your room, leaving you, the very confused y/n, just sitting on your bed.

The next day, Solon came up to you. That was rare. "We need to talk." You blankly stared at him. The man who has purposefully been ignoring you wants to talk to you? "I'm not asking, come." His hand wrapped around your wrist as he took you to a dark secluded area. You were an avid fanfic reader, so the thought of him kidnapping you and revealing to be a mafia was definitely an option. Thankfully(?) that wasn't the case.

"What do you want, Solon?" You crossed your arms.

"You know I'm part werewolf, right?"

"WH-" His hand covered your mouth before you could finish.

"Shut up. Werewolves end up falling in love with the first person I see under the full moon. You were that person, or whatever," He scoffed, face flushed pink.

You moved his hand from your mouth so you could speak, "Seriously? Is that why you were ignoring me?"

He nodded. "Let go of my hand. It's okay if you don't like me, I could go back to ignoring you if you want."

"Solon, no. We could give this a shot. I don't mind you being a werewolf, surprisingly. You could be worse." You squeezed his hand.

Solon forcefully pulled his hand away and turned around. "Okay, I'm leaving now, but meet me outside of the academy tomorrow at noon, we're going on a date."

"Solon?" It was too late for you to call his name, he was already long gone. You smiled to yourself, you actually got a date with a hot guy. You looked up at the stars, thanking them for bringing the two of you together that fateful full moon.
