pokémon sun and moon disability headcanons
made by someone who isn’t particularly as abled as he should be but doesn’t have any sort of diagnosis
professor kukui
if this man doesn’t have some sort of chronic pain then i’ll be fucking damned. anyway, i headcanon him as being ADHD-I (inattentive) and having fluctuating chronic pain in his hip. he is an ambulatory cane user. how does this impact his secret wrestling career, you may ask? on a day when his hip pain is bad, he may have to cancel a match or reschedule. but in the days leading up to a match, he tries to be careful to not tweak his hip and uses his cane more frequently.
(i mayyyyyyy have sort of stolen this headcanon from a now deactivated tumblr)
professor burnet
i don’t really have much to say about her in terms of disability headcanons, but consider this: she gets dizzy in the shower. her showers have to be short and not too hot, otherwise she starts getting dizzy.
ash
hahahaha my favorite boy!!!!! in my mind by the time he gets to alola he’s 14 and a little snarky, a lotta bit witty, but still is a pretty sweet kid. anyway, this boy has done SO MUCH SHIT in his decade and a half of being alive. he’s literally the chosen one dude. he’s probably broken quite a few bones, and some of them probably haven’t healed right, leaving him with chronic pain in one of his knees and one of his ankles. he ends up being an ambulatory cane user as well.

I had a beautifully suspenseful dream starring Arveyn and a very large network of Dwemer ruins whose upper layers were currently housing a booming mechanical industry. A lot of local artificers used the upper rooms as public workshops, and each day it was a race to get good spots to work in. One guy had what was clearly a half-remembered amalgamation of a washing machine and my family’s rice cooker which I remember clearly because What
Seemed like the dream wanted to do some shit where Arveyn has to discreetly join in a race between groups of adventurers and rival Telvanni researchers to the uncharted depths of the ruins. Dream setting was definitely implying that he had been working directly for Revus Demnevanni for a while and had gained a reputation as such, and that Revus had recently gotten in trouble with some nasty vaguely loan shark type company, so they were chasing Arveyn during this whole thing as well. There was a very intriguing tension of having to navigate between the dangers of the ruins itself, the rival expeditions (who were delving as groups), and the loansharks as someone who was definitely at a disadvantage. It was also interesting seeing my sleeping brain’s attempt to generate a snapshot in Arveyn’s life I don’t tend to spend a whole lot of conscious time in (since I usually spend time with him in either ESO era or Skyrim era). From the bits I could remember I thought it did a neat job of balancing a more established and confident Arveyn while keeping noticeable touches of a youthful naïveté. 10/10. There was a weirdly focused scene where he tries to move a cicada nymph away from some exposed pipes despite this being a severely unnecessary risk to his own safety yeah that seems right. Do you think there are regular cicadas on Vvardenfell btw
This dream also reminded me of some long lost in-game Arveyn Strats from many many years ago. Before ESO nerfed the nightblade class’ invisibility to uselessness I used to use it to navigate through dungeons so I could comfortably do quests solo. I completely forgot that this used to be a keystone of my playstyle on Arveyn’s slot, but the dream had him using this strategy extensively to safely navigate this whole mess while undertaking it solo and with a physical disability (as at this point Arveyn is an amputee with a heavy prosthetic leg. And his other leg is also not good). When I woke up and was ruminating on this dream I initially was like “lol, invisibility (or rather 100% chameleon) is Caennor’s playstyle”, but. Wow. I forgot. Used to have another invisible elf.
Anyways there was a brief interruption of the dream as it cut to like. A Dwemer metal style pier. And there was. Ash Ketchum. Talking to a Lugia about its missing child. And then I woke up. So. Thanks for that, the memory of the baby Lugia episodes that haunt me since my early childhood
#I don’t think I’d have Arveyn have the necessary Illusion skills to pull off the invis strat in canon bc it#overlaps with Caennor’s niche. but then again Arveyn is a decent alchemist. maybe potions.#anyways. thank you Lugia and the specter of Ash Ketchum that haunts my every waking moment for diverting this really cool dream.#it’s not their fault actually I woke up and it was playing an adef pokemon probability video.#dream talk#Con stop yapping#Arveyn Serano#Zaan Do Kel#I really liked the snippets of Side characters gossiping abt Arveyn. what kind of person works for walking disaster Revus Demnevanni#lmao. lol.

Ash Ketchum from Pokemon is coded as neurodiverse
[ID: Two Images side by side of a flag with the pastel colours green, blue and purple. On the left flag is an image of Ash. He is wearing casual clothing; jeans, a t-shirt, a jacket, trainers and a backwards baseball cap. He is also wearing fingerless gloves. He appears to be in a victory stance as he is holding aloft a Pokeball. On the right flag is the international symbol of access. End ID]

your nonbinary beatrice post, i’m mentally jumping up and down on a bed ala s1 ava
nonbinary avatrice is so damn underrated imo, especially since they both read very trans and/or nd, (beatrice especially ((unrelated but lilith also has autistic vibes for similar reasons to beatrice)
ava is a bit complicated because on one hand it’s very likely she doesn’t care much or at all, and you have that whole queer af conversation between her and chanel about not knowing who you are because you never got a chance to explore or something that’s even queerer knowing that chanel’s actor is trans, and how often being queer and disabled goes hand in hand because of how man & woman is usually defined so much as a cishet white, thin, well off, pro status quo abled man/woman, but also on the other hand, that could also be the very same reason why a disabled person might firmly id as cis and/or with their agab, because of how they’re systematically denied manhood/womanhood because of their disability
and then with beatrice, like aside from the way she dresses, and i refuse to believe the combat habits didn’t make a few nuns realize that they aren’t so cis after all, you have the “people have tried to make me something i’m not. to make me normal. or at least, acceptable*.” and many people will “accept” gay people but only as long as they’re don’t display any gender queerness/gncness and/or transness
(*and obv that line is very easily also or as well interpretable as autistic beatrice, esp w how she displays a few behaviors that could be read as her being autistic, but that’s off topic)
<- first of all i am just yes yes yes about the intersectionality of disability/queerness & how it adds huge good layers to any conversation about nb avatrice. i rlly like the idea of Ava claiming her gender, b/c so often the systems and the institutions and ablism try to infantilise disabled ppl, & that extends to participating in gender, linking right to dehumanising tactics.
& i fucking LOVE Ava really doing gender and doing it her own way and grabbing it and running with it. Ava coming from a place where the ppl who 'cared' for her didn't give a damn about her girlhood. she's been confronted with her girlhood only in terms of pejoratives - 'you're a very x girl'
i am Thinking about the s1 line where we see sister fuck looming over Ava after she gets her period & saying to her 'you're a woman now' & how that is framed for us. just specifically what the entire event of menstruation feels when you are not cis.
ppl telling you that you're a woman (now, suddenly. like, fuck, when did i agree to this. who asked my permission?) and how you can feel your body being reframed and relegated in a certain way by the world and the anguish of that, often the blunt and speechless agony of it because the language that could latch onto what is wrong about the way that woman sits on your skin is unavailable to you
nonbinary avatrice is very mood to me because i think they in general have an extremely gnc thing going on. look no further than the outfits in s2. it is BOTH of them, also. Ava reads very boyish to me (hilariously in a very 'that kid with the band-aid on his nose & the blue shorts from pokemon who runs around on the beach going '!!! my footsteps keep disappearing'. ava silva-core).
there really is something in Ava that resists conventional femininity & i think it is very AVA the way she does it. she's giving the middle finger to it, she's shrugging at it. she's kissing gender on the mouth & girlbossing & also just being a little guy with her baseball cap turned around like ash ketchum. Ava silva 'gotta catch em' all' Silva but with the genders.
& yeah the fact that when beatrice is not in her habit she is wearing very masc clothing, putting her hands deep in her pockets, shirt collar sticking up out of her sweater. the outfit she wears to kick crimson in the face. the outfit from guttural scream fight night. her armour with its bandoleer of knives & her cute little throwing stars you use to hit soft tissues with pinpoint accuracy. the softness and the violence of her.
& you are so right. 'ppl tried to make me something i'm not' - you can imagine beatrice in the catholic school uniform with the pleated skirts and the soft v-neck jumper & the blazer & every teacher saying 'now girls' and 'please, girls' all the damn time. how electric it must feel to her to hear the word boy on her skin.
(& yeah. my first fic which is s1 beatrice POV i literally have a tag that's like beatrice is autistic & that's how i write her in everything. ligaments, star wars au bea they r all autistic. a part of it is... i am autistic so it ends up maybe being a situation where especially in second person it's hard not to write autistically but shrug emoji, i also just think bea reads very autistic to me. i have a whole bunch of my own feelings & opinions on what autism looks like w/ beatrice specifically but that's not for this post)
tldr: yes you are very smart and very right
#ftm-viktor-hargreeves#this ask was.... amazing thank you very much for it#i love 2 talk gnc avatrice and autistic beatrice#(also lilith for sure has the neurodivergence going on)#avatrice#autism tag

"Ash Ketchum has always been an autistic-coded character, from all the way back to the OS. I know because I am autistic."
Based on nothing but personal headcanon, fanfiction and projection.
"The XY incarnation of the character (which yes, is the worst incarnation of the character) is bad because a) it turned him into a one-note Gary Stu, and b) removed a lot of his neurodivergent traits in favor of making him """badass"""."
How is he a Gary Stu when he never beat Alan?
Gary Stus don't fall into depression either.
Having traits is one thing, many people have a few, but Ash was never full blown autistic outside of BW. He could be badass at times in other series (except BW).
"Did I ever claim BW Ash was a good incarnation of the character? Despite liking BW overall, I do think BW!Ash was mishandled."
So you're saying he's a bad representation of autism? I would agree, his characterization in BW was disgraceful, not only to his character but to disabled people. I have nothing against autistic representation but I don't like it forced where it doesn't belong and I don't like bad representation either.

This is my OC Dustin!! He started out as a SatoGou child, but he has evolved into an OC I have come to love a lot... I made him in November but rarely drew him let alone posted. :’0 In true Zepp fashion, I post a bunch of drawings into 1 post.
Below the cut is some additional information on him and old sketches!
He was born mute, and that likely explains his love and passion for bird Pokemon. He likes the pretty sounds they’re able to make. And when I started drawing him and drafting hair ideas, I know I wanted to give his hairstyle a bit of a bird’s “tail” in the back. Someone commented the rest of his hair looks like a nest. :) He was adopted by Ash and Gou when he was about 7. The orphanage he was in was unable to teach him sign language. So he spent a lot of his time alone reading picture books on flying-type Pokemon. Naturally this resulted him in getting picked on a lot. He didn’t start his journey until later than most kids due to his disability but he managed to find ways. Gou saw Dustin and immediately said “we’re adopting this one.” Tbh, Ash and Gou adopting a disabled child just feels so correct. His full name was gonna be Dustin Anthony Ketchum. Or Dustin Tony, as a pun on “Destiny”.
Otherwise Dustin bonds with his weird dads because he has an insatiable appetite like Ash and the stubbornness of Gou. Gou’s a little bit more sensitive about Dustin’s muteness. Not that Ash doesn’t care, he just sometimes forgets when he’s focused. Dustin can hear just fine, he just can’t speak. He doesn’t express much outside of a shrug and eyeroll, even after he picks up on sign language.
His partner Poke is a Rowlet he names Owloysius (like Aloyisius). His Rowlet is actually female, but he doesn’t know that immediately. His Rowlet picks Dustin by nesting in his hair. She mimics Dustin’s gestures a lot. Like the shrugging and over exaggerated eye rolls.
He’s about 14-15 here. :)
Here are some initial sketches of my boy. Idk what I was thinking with his outfit initially.

I need more people to be talking about disabled Ash.
LIKE. IT MAKES SENSE.
Dude's been through, like, severe trauma that's definitely had a physical toll on him (stares at the amount of times he's died, and just. everything he's been through). Bro's issues are def going to manifest after completing his goal. His brain will realize that he's finally able to rest and BOOM he's having issues.
It starts out with little minor hiccups- feeling exhausted quicker, needing more sleep etc. Maybe he thinks its depression- he's obviously going to get the full force of PTSD (probably) on him too so that's another option.
But then comes the shakiness. Or maybe some issues with grip or dexterity. More noticeable but he ignores it. He's Ash Ketchum, Afterall! This won't hold him down.
But then his legs will start having issues- maybe they give out, or are hurting constantly. Maybe some dizziness too. Maybe he passes out. Now he notices an issues- and so do the people around him.
Maybe he uses mobility aids, like a cane or wheelchair. Maybe he has service pokemon. Maybe they give him a diagnosis.
If he gets mobility aids, he def decorates them. bro gets stickers of so many pokemon. especially pikachu. (he also has an alola sticker bc hes their champion always and forever <3)
All I'm saying is- disabled ash. Because I am totally not being self-indulgent here haha

@nagiru Here we go again, the long posts continue! Now to reference one of my favourite RPG series... God I miss the classic Phantasy Star games.
Oh, is that so? You kidnapped the sister of Laya's greatest general, and you're just now starting to think that it might not have been a good idea?
Ah yes, I know that feeling when you remember you used to exclusively write het. Such a strange feeling to have, now that 99.9999% of my work is Extremely Queer. (Mind you I have a very religious mother and went to a religious school because it had the best science classes in the state - irony! - so I can say without any shadow of doubt that I didn’t even know there were queer options until my early twenties...)
I remember the ‘hybrid’ phase! I used to do that so often, it was wild... I had everything from demon-angel kids to part cats XD Ironically I did come back to the idea as an adult, I had this whole complicated magical-sci-fi world where one particular species was trying to avoid dying out so when they met new species they’d share this ritual allowing the creation of hybrid children... I should get back to that one day. I mean honestly, magical space ships are just cool and I focussed a lot on the various hybrids and their place in different societies and I kinda miss the grumpy pilot lass...
After Record Breaker and Daichi discovering he has a talent for earning trust and organising people I always thought he went into either diplomacy or human resources-style administration. He’s very good at bringing people together after all <3
Hibiki is absolutely the kind of person who tries to fly on no sleep and sheer balls until the point where he collapses from exhaustion. He was absolutely mainlining coffee and soft drinks during the game.
I’ve always wondered what Kazuya and Naoya would make of the world resets... Although knowing Naoya it probably involves him going “Oh for fuck’s sake not again’ while Kazuya flops on the floor next to him complaining that he has to start romancing Atsuro all over again. (Yes I absolutely OTP Kazuya/Atsuro, they are precious doofuses.)
Not only are the Hotsuin familiar with murder, in this case it takes a LOT of effort to stop Yamato escalating straight to it. He’s gotten better at not defaulting to ‘kill the fucker’ since the first world but look at what he did to Hibiki’s family how dare that pathetic slug hurt them?! (Yamato is rabidly protective of Hibiki and I cannot be convinced otherwise, and of course it’s going to extend to the little brother and the little brother’s boyfriend once he gets to know them.)
My favourite anything involving a prophecy has always been Pokemon the Movie 2000, where the prophecy literally says “And the world will turn to Ash” and for centuries everyone thought it meant burnt-stuff-ash and then Slowking looks at Ash Ketchum as it all goes down and just *snrk*. It’s pretty damn funny. Apart from that I really hate prophecies. I actually once had a world set up where there was an entire clan with the ability to see the future and one of the main characters was a Seer from this clan and even then they didn’t make prophecies because a. the future is mutable and b. when you only see short flashes of said future it can be very hard to work out what any of it means!
I miss Lily the Seer. She gave very few fucks.
FUCK Naoto’s Social Link. I’ve never finished it because someone showed me the Christmas Eve scene with her and I was so offended I almost gave up on the game entirely. Naoto and Kanji are both extremely queer-coded and I did not enjoy the game trying to pretend they weren’t.
Okay Luna and Ardyn becoming friends after she slaps the hell out of him is perfect and my new headcanon! Him realising he seriously underestimated her, her discovering why he’s as angry and fucked up as he is, slow tentative overtures of friendship... Love it!
I do stream a little bit because there’s a show here called Gogglebox that is extremely funny but almost impossible to watch on free to air, and my parents let me use their Foxtel account for it. I absolutely wouldn’t if I had to pay for it though, the disability pension is stretched thin already.

🔥 Ash Ketchum
Usually I avoid saying this bc haha funny pokemon anime not that deep but I'm using this as an excuse to finally say it: the treatment the fandom gives him absolutely reeks with ableism. Ash is heavily coded as having adhd and multiple learning disabilities, we see this every time Ash enters an academic environment. He is a highly skilled pokemon trainer but that all falls apart the moment he is in a traditional school setting. Characters are constantly surprised by how badly ash does bc he seems so capable outside those school settings. The whole episode in DP with candase and the trainers school and how Candase was all "wow :/ you seem so smart :/ why did you screw up in my class? :/" is something a lot of kids with adhd go through. The idea that we clearly arent trying hard enough because we are perceived as intelligent in person but dont read that way on paper.
Alola confirms Ash's status as a special ed kid for me because his whole relationship with Kukui is text book "special ed kid finally does well in school after meeting a teacher who actually Gives A Crap about their students and gives students specialized help" narrative.
Like just one example: In "alola open house" ash was shown struggling with writing out an presentation for the open house, to the point where he let's rotom speak for him bc he was so stressed out by his homework. When caught, he expected Kukui to be angry but instead is given a second chance to freehand his speech, and as a result does a lot better.
So yeah the way people treat Ash like he's unintelligent or a bad trainer or act like he's stupid for not mathematically calculating his pokemon's every stat and always using type advantage or whatever excuse they use to insult and degrade the kid for being goofy or making honest mistakes will always feel suspicious. ESPECIALLY if they've actually watched, like, multiple seasons of the anime. If you've actually watched the show you then it cant be written off as getting all your information second hand, you watched a show where the main character was an adhd coded child and decided to be hateful towards him and as a result I do not trust you.

Hi! It's me again :) I would like to request another Ash comforting Misty flashfic. This time I imagined Misty having a panic attack. Hope the idea appeals to you! And take your time, no worries :)
[Hah, perhaps unfortunately, after I received this request and gave it a whopping five minutes of thought, I suddenly felt really inspired to just go for it.]
She was floating rather blissfully in a pool of water. Small waves lapped softly against her, pushing her rather loftily to and fro as she blinked up straight into a bright sun that, despite it’s shine, didn’t seem to hurt her vision. A multitude of water-type Pokemon were swimming around her, some diving under or leaping over, just everywhere… and she accepted this rather passively even not knowing whose Pokemon they were or where they’d come from.
It was a rather pleasant dream overall… until it wasn’t.
What’s…?
Suddenly she was sinking down, the sun fading away, taking its light and - she assumed though she couldn’t say she felt it - warmth with it. The Pokemon, no more than vague shadows representing familiarity, had all but vanished except for one.
She was gripping her Staryu by its top point as it dove deeper into inky, cool abyss, leading her towards… something. She was looking for something, desperate to save it, but she could barely see her Pokemon plunging through its element a foot or two in front of her. How could she possibly find…?
What’s happening…?
Training instincts told her to conserve oxygen, but her lips flew open anyway as if trying to call out to her target. Bubbles and breath and a single word escaped her, in such clear articulation she knew it shouldn’t have been possible.
“Ash!”
She was looking for Ash, her best friend. He’d fallen from so far, so fast… He was sinking! Was he even conscious…? She remembered now, at least that much, but the anchoring question of why seemed impossible to answer at present. She had to find him!
Where was he? How much farther would she have to go? How could she possibly hope to find him in this blackness? And how far had she gone without needing to take a breath…?
And yet Staryu continued to faithfully carry her onward in their mission.
She had reached a peak of lucidity just in time for an object slightly larger than her hand to float hazily by. Without concern, she snatched it out of the murk.
It was a cap she had seen on his head near constantly in recent days, her heart plummeting in breathless fear and panic at the sight of it in her grasp and him nowhere in sight. She didn’t think about the insensibility behind calling out to him again.
“Ash!” The shriek of her own unnerved horror threatened to deafen her as well as her Pokemon. “Ash, where are you?!”
“Misty, wake up!”
Her eyes snapped open, wiry muscles rigid as a damp sheen clung to her brow and neck. Fists clenching tightly around her bedroll, she leaped into a sitting position, at this point realizing she hadn’t taken a single breath since waking, inhaling deeply in response.
“I… What…?” she whispered, vocal chords weak and throat dry. Craning her neck, wild gaze taking in her surroundings, she was met with Ash Ketchum and his partner Pikachu staring her up and down looking reasonable taken aback from beside her.
“Uh… you okay?” the young man asked after a few seconds, leaning a little closer. She couldn’t answer, fingers wringing their way around the hem of her sleeping bag at the mere question. “You looked like you were having a nightmare.”
A nightmare…?
“Pikachupi, kachu pika?”
“Y - yeah, we were worried. Glad you’re up now though.” And, looking slightly bashful, averting his gaze, Ash added, “It… kinda sounded like you were calling out my name. But…”
Almost any other time, the redheaded teenage girl would have read something into how flustered he looked at the thought of her dreaming about him. She also would have had the clear head to feel self-conscious over an Ash donned in nothing more than boxer shorts and a bandage around his scalp, which was currently the case. All the sight did now was remind her of…
“I think… about earlier…” she muttered, heart leaping up into her throat, stomach churning before icing over. “Or… I guess it was yesterday…”
“Oh.” It was hard to tell by the dim light of the low fire but his face seemed a little paler.
Yesterday, when Team Rocket had last attacked them. It had been all of six or so hours ago; barely dusk. They had used their tricks to steal Pikachu as well as Ash’s belt lined with the rest of his Pokeballs before taking off in their latest hot air balloon.
In her effort to assist, Misty had released Staryu to sabotage their escape but her precious water-type’s rapid spin had only been able to cut all of two ropes tying the villains’ basket to their balloon. One rope had been secured again by the Rocket gang and tied slipshod once more while Ash, in furious pursuit, had grabbed the other one before they’d lifted too high from the ground, immediately carried up and away with them.
Misty had seen him try to climb it while she ran to catch up, seen also Team Rocket’s collected anger and alarm as they attempted to shake him loose before Jessie had released one of her own Pokemon to force the teenage boy to let go.
Ash hadn’t much chance at evading; it was hard to do so when he was busy trying to keep his grip on what was steadily becoming a literal life line, Pikachu calling out to him from where he was trapped a good twenty or so feet overhead.
Even from her slowly increasing distance, Misty heard the blast that was Jessie’s Gourgeist releasing their seed bomb. The attack descended, exploding as it approached her friend. Ash was shouting, slipping, flailing, a second explosive impact and he was suddenly falling from the sky as her heart stopped–
No more playing softball!
He’d hit the body of water that had (luckily) drifted below him with a sickening smack on his back, sunk quickly below the surface. It all happened so swiftly.
Gyarados appeared in a familiar flash of red and roared, his trainer commanding him to immediately leap and bite through Team Rocket’s balloon, tearing the fabric instantly and disabling the criminal trio’s getaway. So violent, so much, so fast.
In the meantime, Misty grabbed a hold of Staryu, inhaled deeply and held it, both diving to search for their friend… So dark… So gone… So quickly…
“Hey, are you okay?” Ash abruptly asked her, voice sounding distant and hollow, reverberating in her eardrums, the sound challenged by her roaring, pounding heartbeat.
“I…”
“Misty, what’s wrong?” He sounded a little more anxious now during round two, and she was surprised to vaguely notice his hand around her wrist, though she couldn’t feel it for some reason.
“I don’t…” She couldn’t breathe, response reduced to a throaty gasp. Her throat was coated in plastic and suffocating. Her skin was burning from cold somehow, she needed water–
–he was sinking so deep down–
–and air–
–holding her breath, but she would top out after one hundred and eighty seconds max and how much time had passed already–
–sweat was pouring from her forehead, her neck, she was either numb or aching, on fire, her gaze vacant, and it scared him if he was being honest–
“–Misty, what’s going on–?”
“Pikachupi!”
–where was he, where is he, how big is this place… his hat is in her free hand, her grip on Staryu stiffening, she would have to sacrifice the hat if, or when, she found him–
–so many times, this had happened too many times already since knowing him, what if she doesn’t get to him quick enough, what if he–
“–Hey!”
His shout was enough to momentarily clear her head. Perhaps he was able to sense that fact because he took advantage, and Misty felt the shocking impression of cool hands resting firmly against her flushed cheeks. Then the two were eye to eye and her wave of despair and doom and panic briefly subsided.
“Listen, Mist, you’re not there, you’re here. Pay attention to me right now!” he told her forcibly, and she felt him tug a little uncomfortably, her neck yanking, so she wouldn’t lose focus. “Look at me, okay? Can you do that?”
She could barely hear him, gaze flickering between the fire light glowing in his eyes to his fringe and lashes, to his cheeks… It was all him though… She could… She could do this!
“You need to take a breath! C’mon, we’ve got this, just do what I do, look,” after which he did indeed lead by example. She watched his chest rise and fall, his eyes fluttering momentarily closed and lips pursed barely open as he exhaled.
She gurgled and choked, blinked away the white hot tears at the corner of her burning eyes, halfheartedly shook her head in defeat.
“It’s okay, c’mon, we’ll try again together, now in through your nose,” he coached her, slowly initiating his own attempt and waiting until he heard her copy it before moving on, “and then out through your mouth… You got it!” he applauded her, “Okay, and again… Let’s do it a few more times…”
It seemed forever and yet also instantaneous for the symptoms to subside, and she did what she could to bear in mind what Ash was saying and doing to tether her to the present.
“–take a breath–”
His hands on her cheeks…
“–Pay attention to me right now–”
His shoulders rising and falling…
“–we’ll try again together–”
His face overtaking her vision, mere inches from hers, collarbone connecting to his bare chest…
Ash wasn’t sure what emotional response was most prevalent a few minutes later when his redheaded friend, still trembling a little but no longer writhing and choking, maneuvered to cover his hands with her own, both pairs now held against her cheeks. Part of him was pleased, it seemed to be her first conscious and calm move since… whatever had happened. Another part of him was loath to admit how flustered he felt as her somehow inconceivably soft fingers splayed over his own rougher ones.
“S - so… what happened?” he had the nerve to eventually ask her, though he could still barely look her in the eyes. Her current object of focus was Pikachu curled up in her lap while she patted his short fur coat. The teen boy noticed it offered a pleasant distraction, all things considered.
“Dunno,” she croaked, cleared her throat, tried to elaborate. “That’s… never happened before that I know of. It’s like… I was having that nightmare, I think it was based off what happened… y’know, yesterday… But then I couldn’t stop thinking of it… Then I was feeling it, like it was happening all over again, and I was… thinking of you, losing you…” She didn’t give the flush on her cheeks the chance to settle, continuing with her description. “Y’know, you worry me too much, Mr. Pokemon Master!” she finished rather harshly, faltering in her grounding activity.
“Mwah, wait a sec, now it’s my fault?!”
“Of course it is, you dummy! I mean, you shouldn’t have done that! We would have gotten your Pokemon back eventually! We always do!”
Rather than risk a rebuttal that would lead to another panic attack, he stared her down before heaving a deep sigh and relenting.
“Sorry… It’s second nature by now.”
She thought about asking him if he meant his self-sacrificing nature or worrying her to near death but decided against it. They’d been through enough by now and it was only roughly three in the morning!
“Y’know Ash, I can admit after all the time we’ve known each other… that I really like the kind of person you are,” she iterated almost affectionately instead, “You’re passionate and considerate, at least when you wanna be,” she made a point to add. “But sometimes… I really wish you’d take a little better care of yourself. Every time something like… like yesterday happens… I worry it’s the last time I’ll ever see you.”
The… last time? he thought, not quite understanding immediately what she’d been getting at… Oh, there it was. He hummed under his breath, brow furrowed, had gotten to the point of opening his mouth without a clue as to what he’d say before she interrupted him.
“Well, if there’s anything I know for sure it’s that there’s no changing you… so I guess for now at least I’ll have to do my best to support you.”
“Oh. Yeah. Thanks.” The response was so simple but he honestly had no idea what else he could say. Perhaps it was something for another time.
“I mean, after your help earlier, I guess I owe you, right?”
But Ash was briefly overwhelmed by the flashback of his regaining consciousness with blurred vision on the hard ground the evening before, head aching and blood dripping from his temple, Misty kneeling over him soaking wet and shaking from the brisk chill, practically crying even as she smiled in relief at the sight of him coming to.
His gratitude and… something he couldn’t quite place swept through him and swelled up, filling every ounce of his person as he took in the sight of his best friend sitting at his side.
“Please, Mist,” he told her peaceably in utter confidence, “it was the least I could do for you.”
[There were a couple details i left out because of the word count limit. Ash was down to boxers because he didn’t plan ahead, simple as that. His only outfit was soaked after falling into the water so yeah, it’s meant to be air-drying. Misty is fully dressed because she did plan ahead. Lol. Ash also received some cuts and stuff from the minor explosives and Pikachu escaped his cage when Gyarados attacked TR’s balloon, after which he rescued his trainer’s PokeBelt from them. Just in case anyone was curious. As for Misty’s panic attack timing, I felt that the adrenaline rush in the moment would keep her from falling prey to it so that’s why it takes place hours later when she has time to think. As for how Ash helps her control it, he’s instinctively offering her deep breathing and grounding techniques which - if you’re unfamiliar - are pretty basic mental coping skills.
Also a few unrelated things: Please do not just like this story! If you had a good time reading, I implore you to share this and help me spread the word about this blog! I haven’t received many requests lately, only one every 6-15 days! That being said, if you have a fic request, please send it in! I have 1 or 2 in my inbox and a couple others in drafts that I’ve started but I could use some more prompts if you’re interested in me writing for them!]

PROBABLY HORRIBLE POKÉANI SWSH THEORY
so we’re getting a new traveling companion this season, as usual

we don’t know his name yet but i noticed something reaaaal interesting about his design...
Let’s compare him to Mr. Ketchum.
Immediately, something sticks out to me.

his ankles are WAAAAY thinner than Ash’s.
This isn’t a one-off mistake by the artist, either, it’s in the other image we got, also.

My theory?
Prostheses.

It would be SO COOL to have a disabled main character in Pokéani! He would be a great role model for disabled kids all over the world, that even when you’re disadvantaged, you can still be the very best, like no one ever was.
edit: this character is female asdfgjkl that’s why she has thinner proportions
EDIT 2: GOU IS A DUDE THIS THEORY STILL HAS WEIGHT
#idk im probably talking out of my ass#just think itd be cool tbh#my stuff#he probably just has twig ankles because he has twig ankles#pokemon sword and shield#swsh#pokeani
