I need more people to be talking about disabled Ash.
LIKE. IT MAKES SENSE.
Dude's been through, like, severe trauma that's definitely had a physical toll on him (stares at the amount of times he's died, and just. everything he's been through). Bro's issues are def going to manifest after completing his goal. His brain will realize that he's finally able to rest and BOOM he's having issues.
It starts out with little minor hiccups- feeling exhausted quicker, needing more sleep etc. Maybe he thinks its depression- he's obviously going to get the full force of PTSD (probably) on him too so that's another option.
But then comes the shakiness. Or maybe some issues with grip or dexterity. More noticeable but he ignores it. He's Ash Ketchum, Afterall! This won't hold him down.
But then his legs will start having issues- maybe they give out, or are hurting constantly. Maybe some dizziness too. Maybe he passes out. Now he notices an issues- and so do the people around him.
Maybe he uses mobility aids, like a cane or wheelchair. Maybe he has service pokemon. Maybe they give him a diagnosis.
If he gets mobility aids, he def decorates them. bro gets stickers of so many pokemon. especially pikachu. (he also has an alola sticker bc hes their champion always and forever <3)
All I'm saying is- disabled ash. Because I am totally not being self-indulgent here haha

pokémon sun and moon disability headcanons
made by someone who isn’t particularly as abled as he should be but doesn’t have any sort of diagnosis
professor kukui
if this man doesn’t have some sort of chronic pain then i’ll be fucking damned. anyway, i headcanon him as being ADHD-I (inattentive) and having fluctuating chronic pain in his hip. he is an ambulatory cane user. how does this impact his secret wrestling career, you may ask? on a day when his hip pain is bad, he may have to cancel a match or reschedule. but in the days leading up to a match, he tries to be careful to not tweak his hip and uses his cane more frequently.
(i mayyyyyyy have sort of stolen this headcanon from a now deactivated tumblr)
professor burnet
i don’t really have much to say about her in terms of disability headcanons, but consider this: she gets dizzy in the shower. her showers have to be short and not too hot, otherwise she starts getting dizzy.
ash
hahahaha my favorite boy!!!!! in my mind by the time he gets to alola he’s 14 and a little snarky, a lotta bit witty, but still is a pretty sweet kid. anyway, this boy has done SO MUCH SHIT in his decade and a half of being alive. he’s literally the chosen one dude. he’s probably broken quite a few bones, and some of them probably haven’t healed right, leaving him with chronic pain in one of his knees and one of his ankles. he ends up being an ambulatory cane user as well.

your nonbinary beatrice post, i’m mentally jumping up and down on a bed ala s1 ava
nonbinary avatrice is so damn underrated imo, especially since they both read very trans and/or nd, (beatrice especially ((unrelated but lilith also has autistic vibes for similar reasons to beatrice)
ava is a bit complicated because on one hand it’s very likely she doesn’t care much or at all, and you have that whole queer af conversation between her and chanel about not knowing who you are because you never got a chance to explore or something that’s even queerer knowing that chanel’s actor is trans, and how often being queer and disabled goes hand in hand because of how man & woman is usually defined so much as a cishet white, thin, well off, pro status quo abled man/woman, but also on the other hand, that could also be the very same reason why a disabled person might firmly id as cis and/or with their agab, because of how they’re systematically denied manhood/womanhood because of their disability
and then with beatrice, like aside from the way she dresses, and i refuse to believe the combat habits didn’t make a few nuns realize that they aren’t so cis after all, you have the “people have tried to make me something i’m not. to make me normal. or at least, acceptable*.” and many people will “accept” gay people but only as long as they’re don’t display any gender queerness/gncness and/or transness
(*and obv that line is very easily also or as well interpretable as autistic beatrice, esp w how she displays a few behaviors that could be read as her being autistic, but that’s off topic)
<- first of all i am just yes yes yes about the intersectionality of disability/queerness & how it adds huge good layers to any conversation about nb avatrice. i rlly like the idea of Ava claiming her gender, b/c so often the systems and the institutions and ablism try to infantilise disabled ppl, & that extends to participating in gender, linking right to dehumanising tactics.
& i fucking LOVE Ava really doing gender and doing it her own way and grabbing it and running with it. Ava coming from a place where the ppl who 'cared' for her didn't give a damn about her girlhood. she's been confronted with her girlhood only in terms of pejoratives - 'you're a very x girl'
i am Thinking about the s1 line where we see sister fuck looming over Ava after she gets her period & saying to her 'you're a woman now' & how that is framed for us. just specifically what the entire event of menstruation feels when you are not cis.
ppl telling you that you're a woman (now, suddenly. like, fuck, when did i agree to this. who asked my permission?) and how you can feel your body being reframed and relegated in a certain way by the world and the anguish of that, often the blunt and speechless agony of it because the language that could latch onto what is wrong about the way that woman sits on your skin is unavailable to you
nonbinary avatrice is very mood to me because i think they in general have an extremely gnc thing going on. look no further than the outfits in s2. it is BOTH of them, also. Ava reads very boyish to me (hilariously in a very 'that kid with the band-aid on his nose & the blue shorts from pokemon who runs around on the beach going '!!! my footsteps keep disappearing'. ava silva-core).
there really is something in Ava that resists conventional femininity & i think it is very AVA the way she does it. she's giving the middle finger to it, she's shrugging at it. she's kissing gender on the mouth & girlbossing & also just being a little guy with her baseball cap turned around like ash ketchum. Ava silva 'gotta catch em' all' Silva but with the genders.
& yeah the fact that when beatrice is not in her habit she is wearing very masc clothing, putting her hands deep in her pockets, shirt collar sticking up out of her sweater. the outfit she wears to kick crimson in the face. the outfit from guttural scream fight night. her armour with its bandoleer of knives & her cute little throwing stars you use to hit soft tissues with pinpoint accuracy. the softness and the violence of her.
& you are so right. 'ppl tried to make me something i'm not' - you can imagine beatrice in the catholic school uniform with the pleated skirts and the soft v-neck jumper & the blazer & every teacher saying 'now girls' and 'please, girls' all the damn time. how electric it must feel to her to hear the word boy on her skin.
(& yeah. my first fic which is s1 beatrice POV i literally have a tag that's like beatrice is autistic & that's how i write her in everything. ligaments, star wars au bea they r all autistic. a part of it is... i am autistic so it ends up maybe being a situation where especially in second person it's hard not to write autistically but shrug emoji, i also just think bea reads very autistic to me. i have a whole bunch of my own feelings & opinions on what autism looks like w/ beatrice specifically but that's not for this post)
tldr: yes you are very smart and very right

"Ash Ketchum has always been an autistic-coded character, from all the way back to the OS. I know because I am autistic."
Based on nothing but personal headcanon, fanfiction and projection.
"The XY incarnation of the character (which yes, is the worst incarnation of the character) is bad because a) it turned him into a one-note Gary Stu, and b) removed a lot of his neurodivergent traits in favor of making him """badass"""."
How is he a Gary Stu when he never beat Alan?
Gary Stus don't fall into depression either.
Having traits is one thing, many people have a few, but Ash was never full blown autistic outside of BW. He could be badass at times in other series (except BW).
"Did I ever claim BW Ash was a good incarnation of the character? Despite liking BW overall, I do think BW!Ash was mishandled."
So you're saying he's a bad representation of autism? I would agree, his characterization in BW was disgraceful, not only to his character but to disabled people. I have nothing against autistic representation but I don't like it forced where it doesn't belong and I don't like bad representation either.

Ohkay… listen I got a very conscious moment right now. My favorite Pokémon as a kid was heart gold okay.. and I chose glumanda as my fire starter , BUT THEN, I catched a voltilamm and abandoned the glumanda after its first evolution into the poke center and trained my voltilamm to level 72. Amapharos was my actually starter and now I got that main character moment again I feel like Ash Ketchum because his starter was basically Pikachu also a electro pokemon, I even did the end arenas with Ampharos (Viktor) alone …. Damn shawty I’m disabled

About me!!
Hii I'm Deya, I like animation and horror. Black & ethnic jew. Audhd. Weird dyke and evil teenager, I suppose. The httyd special interest indeed goes crazy. Got dragged into the Rotbtd/Hijack trenches and will not be leaving anytime soon. Also a deep set pokeani obsession. Don't be surprised by Ash Ketchum being here, he doesn't pay rent but that's okay since he's autistic son #2
Mostly the ramblings of a madman here but I have been known to, on occasion, say intelligent things I swear. Artist that doesn't draw. Occasional writing. Send me an ask about one of my AUs and my heart is yours.

☆ I lovee worldbuilding, and overthinking implications and what-ifs when it comes to my favorite stories!!
☆ I swear, a lot (just thought I'd say bc ik some people don't like that 😭) and also make/reblog a lot of suggestive jokes. I may also reblog nonsexual nudity (in art) but likely won't be tagged bc. It's just bodies yknow 👍

I'm changing my Ash x Lillie family AU
This is Anri Ketchum (my pokemon oc), he has a blind twin named Mele Ketchum. A adoptive sister named Marisa Alonsa (Now Marisa Ketchum) who is younger than him, two biological younger siblings named Nike and Mia Ketchum.
Anri is 16-years-old and he's the oldest.
Ash Ketchum and Lillie Aether are his parents.
He's autistic but he's tough with other trainners and soft for childrens including, pokemons and his family.
Greninja is his partner.
Yep! Unlike his parents, Anri and his siblinga catches Legendary, Pseudo-legendary, and mythical pokemons (but, have to give the legendarias and mythical pokemons to Randall so that they could avoid danger).
He has known Randall since he and Mele were sent to Kalos to study Mega evolution.
He does have a Z-ring, a mega keystone, a dynamax band, and a tera orb (and maybe other glimmicks if Gamefreaks added it in their new pokemon games).
His favourite foods are white strawberries, chocolate chiffon cakes, and brunswick stew.
He has no least favourite.
He's bisexual and has a boyfriend named Roger and a girlfriend named Rosia they are both from Hoenn. Roger is 15 while Rosia is 16 with dyslexia which makes Roger to look after both Rosia and Anri since he doesn't have any disability.
Right now, he and Mele are studying aboard Hoenn.

Ash Ketchum from Pokemon is coded as neurodiverse
[ID: Two Images side by side of a flag with the pastel colours green, blue and purple. On the left flag is an image of Ash. He is wearing casual clothing; jeans, a t-shirt, a jacket, trainers and a backwards baseball cap. He is also wearing fingerless gloves. He appears to be in a victory stance as he is holding aloft a Pokeball. On the right flag is the international symbol of access. End ID]

CURSED AU!
It's not really cursed but Ash was born with a specific tyoe of Vitilego that had the townnof pallet believing he was cursed by Mew.
Eventually, Ash gets a deformed Pikachu by a very sorry Oak. In truth, his assistants hid the well to do pokemon from him cause they felt a cursed child shouldn't have a proper pokemon and stuck him with a Pikachu who coukdnt garner electricity like other decent poke types.
This one isnt my most in depth AU, but i wanted one where deformities, disabilities or even looks wouldnt have mattered to someone who has them. And While Ash original hid his looks, he stops because his pokemon cant hide Their own disabilities.

This is my OC Dustin!! He started out as a SatoGou child, but he has evolved into an OC I have come to love a lot... I made him in November but rarely drew him let alone posted. :’0 In true Zepp fashion, I post a bunch of drawings into 1 post.
Below the cut is some additional information on him and old sketches!
He was born mute, and that likely explains his love and passion for bird Pokemon. He likes the pretty sounds they’re able to make. And when I started drawing him and drafting hair ideas, I know I wanted to give his hairstyle a bit of a bird’s “tail” in the back. Someone commented the rest of his hair looks like a nest. :) He was adopted by Ash and Gou when he was about 7. The orphanage he was in was unable to teach him sign language. So he spent a lot of his time alone reading picture books on flying-type Pokemon. Naturally this resulted him in getting picked on a lot. He didn’t start his journey until later than most kids due to his disability but he managed to find ways. Gou saw Dustin and immediately said “we’re adopting this one.” Tbh, Ash and Gou adopting a disabled child just feels so correct. His full name was gonna be Dustin Anthony Ketchum. Or Dustin Tony, as a pun on “Destiny”.
Otherwise Dustin bonds with his weird dads because he has an insatiable appetite like Ash and the stubbornness of Gou. Gou’s a little bit more sensitive about Dustin’s muteness. Not that Ash doesn’t care, he just sometimes forgets when he’s focused. Dustin can hear just fine, he just can’t speak. He doesn’t express much outside of a shrug and eyeroll, even after he picks up on sign language.
His partner Poke is a Rowlet he names Owloysius (like Aloyisius). His Rowlet is actually female, but he doesn’t know that immediately. His Rowlet picks Dustin by nesting in his hair. She mimics Dustin’s gestures a lot. Like the shrugging and over exaggerated eye rolls.
He’s about 14-15 here. :)
Here are some initial sketches of my boy. Idk what I was thinking with his outfit initially.

Pokemon Head-Canon Rant at 1:30 in the Morning
So I take the ‘night-shift/graveyard-shift’ when it comes to looking after a disabled family member [american health care sucks enough that untrained mid-twenty year olds have to look after people that could end up needing help at literally any time]. This means I’m wide awake at this hour of 1:30 in the morning and not going to sleep any time soon. I’m gonna rant about my head-canons about Pokemon.
Keep in mind:: I mostly know the games, I stopped watching the anime at some point and am not familiar enough with the manga to feel comfortable theorizing/head-canoning it beyond adding some notes about it to my game-verse based thoughts
This is important because as far as I can tell the games, anime, and manga all have distinct ‘universes’. This can be viewed like how marvel has the movie verse, which is separate from the comic verse, which is separate from the other comic verse, and oh did you know they have a canonical zombie-verse? [idk if that’s actually the case, but you get the point. Marvel has many verses]
This means that if I have a head-canon for the games [as these are focused on] I would rather someone not slam it shut with a “BUT ASH KETCHUM!!!!” or whatever. There are points where the games and anime explicitly contradict each other, not just in Pokemon but in other fandoms I enjoy and I’d like to normalize the idea that different mediums for the stories are different universes unless there is sufficient reason to believe them to be a shifted perspective of the same story.
Side Note: terms/etc will be explained at will, if you are an avid Pokemon fan this can feel overly explained where as someone who only knows Pikachu [if even that] will likely be lost pretty much immediately [might already be]. I’m not going to worry about whether a hypothetical audience is sitting there either going “well DUH! This is like Pokemon 101, if even!!” or “I- wait wha- are you even speaking english????”
Anyway. On with my rambling~
First and foremost, the base of most of my head-canons:: Pokemon are roughly 50% pure energy. This [to me] explains why Pokemon can seemingly break the laws of physics via a sudden explosion of energy turning them into bigger forms [evolution, which is basically magical metamorphoses], how pokeballs work [we’ll get there], and a head-canon me and my sister developed regarding the in-game breeding system [again, we’ll get there]. This energy is in-universe referred to as aura [in regards to anything involving Lucario], infinity energy [ORAS], and likely in other ways as well. I will refer to this energy as magic for the most part since that is a good enough catch-all and quite honestly it is a magic system
The way i imagine types and their interplay works is essentially the natural flow of and affinities for magic. Some beings are naturally attuned to water magic, and thus they share many of its properties [being weak to ‘grass’ magic and electric magic, being strong against fire magic and ground magic] and will also make ‘spells’ [aka; attacks/moves] of that magic more efficient [shown via having STAB]. I like to imagine Pokemon in other worlds [via isekai events, which are now a canon option!] so that means i have to figure out how different magic systems work with pokemon types. I also watch theories by Lockstin [youtube person] so some of my understanding of types and such are heavily influenced by him and a few others [ex; Bird Keeper Toby]
I also go with the general idea that human terms are not absolute facts. Humans are fallible, so why should we take their word as the word of god on what a thing is supposed to be called? Case in point: “Grass type” is basically “plant based magic”. As such, if I define certain types in a way that conflict with the standard name and connotations of a name for things like the types, arguing against this to me would be like saying that I can’t say my favorite berry is banana or strawberry depending on your understanding of what a berry is [one is an actual berry, the other not so much but screw it]
{Break to grab a bowl of chips}
{And I’m back}
On: Attacks; Attacks, or spells for the non-pokefans, are things ranging from Water Gun [typically a water-type attack of 40 power and 100% accuracy, assumed mildly long-range/mid-range due to no contact] to Flamethrower [fire-type attack of 90 power and 100% accuracy, again no contact] to Tackle [normal-type attack of 40 power and 100^ accuracy, this one does make contact] to Heal Pulse [psychic-type attack that doesn’t do damage but instead heals the target and thankfully ignores accuracy checks completely]. I am under the impression that every attack has some level of magic involved. Yes, even the one that is literally just a tackle. This is in part because of the Mystery Dungeon spin-off series, where you can ‘bop’ the enemy, without using PP [power points, aka how many times you can use each of these spells] and do typeless damage. Typeless damage from this ‘bopping’ can deal damage to ghost types, which are immune to normal types and thus also tackle [I would need to double check but admittedly Mystery Dungeon probably does weird things with immunities]. This truly typeless trait is shared by one other attack [excluding weird glitch scenarios] by exactly one other “attack”: Struggle. How struggle works in the game is, once you have exhausted all PP, if you still try to attack you will automatically use Struggle, a typeless attack that does pitiful damage and has recoil. I interpret this recoil to be one of two possibilities: 1; you try pulling on magic that isn’t there and the process is fricking painful [like pulling a muscle or something] or 2; you are “casting from hit points”
Continued: Attacks; [Because giant walls of text scare me a bit] So every attack is a spell, so even if from an outsider’s perspective it looks like the Pokemon just punched you, they actually cast “Sucker Punch”~. Now on to game mechanics vs world building. It is weird to assume pokemon actually forget the attack they’ve been using for, what, fifty battles now? So I’m assuming in-universe it’s more in line with the system Legends: Arceus has [ie: the Pokemon never really forgets any of their attacks, but you can only have four attack slots filled at a time]. While the anime has a ‘softer magic system’, the games are more rigid. Thunderbolt is not just a stronger Thunder shock, they are distinct ‘spells’ that rely on different PP pools and have arguably different effects [more noticeable in the difference between Thunderbolt and Thunder, as the latter is basically a more powerful version with botched accuracy, except in the rain where Thunder bypasses accuracy]. If some one is going to ask why you can’t just use all the attacks in a fight, there are roughly 3 reasons. 1; Active Memory, imagine your memory is a card game, your long-term memory is your playing board, the discard pile and the deck are the same nebulous area, and your active memory is your hand. Your ‘hand’ in this card game can only hold up to five cards, each attack is at least half a card, arguably one card each, and you can only have a vague view of your board. Do you really want to risk letting your opponent take you out with an attack you shouldn’t have lost to simply because you had to shift through ten attacks when you could just stick to four or even two? 2; Atrophy, while this is all magic that doesn’t mean a thing can’t atrophy a bit. Ever have a moment where it takes you a while to remember how to solve a question that you know you figured out really quickly in school? The problem was that your mind atrophied a bit from the lack of focus on that topic. As such having a Pokemon have to keep more then four attacks at combat proficiency would be annoying at best and potentially mild [or even notable] torture at higher levels. 3; There could be a competition element to it. Official matches, such as against gym leaders and the championships, could require that you only use four distinct attacks [with reasonable leeway for some things]
On: Abilities; Due to the roughly 50/50 split in pokemon regarding their biological mass and their magical mass, this explains why some abilities are purely magical effects [various abilities that translate incoming attacks of certain types into an advantage like health regeneration or a stat boost] and some are ‘purely physical attributes’ [like poison point, basically the Poison Dart Frogs’ ability]. This also explains why there is a way to switch the abilities regardless of how magical or physical they are; they both rely on an innate magic of the species.
On: Breeding [Get Your Mind Out of the Gutter]; I have decided that there are two ways a Pokemon can breed, one magical and one physical. The physical method is how we would expect them to work, “when an Espeon and Umbreon love each other very much, they make a litter of Eevee”. The magical method is what we see in-game. Me and my sister also head-canon that the ‘egg’ is actually a magic incubation system, allowing them to be way more durable than actual eggs. Each method has their bonuses and their problems. Physical^ gives you potentially many offspring [look at all the Pokemon based off of things that have like half a dozen babies at a time, let alone hundreds], a ‘naturally developing’ mind and body. The problems come from the incubation period, where at best there are very fragile eggs the parent needs to guard [but could just as easily mean the parent in inhibited by what are functionally parasites], the ‘baby stage’ of development [which can take anywhere from possibly a day if i’m not mistaken to literal years], and the fact you can’t mix and match as much here. Magical^ gives you an offspring that is immediately combat ready [even if level one, that’s still better then “level 0″] and lets you mix a Skitty with a Wailord [I’m not even joking, they share an egg group], but has the problem that there is technically only ever one offspring here [I head-canon that twins can happen, they’re just rare], the offspring is likely locked in a simultaneously child-like and adult-like mentality [my head-canon, so they can understand what’s going on, how to follow orders, etc, without inexplicable wisdom], there’s also a detachment issue since the parent doesn’t need to raise the offspring much, if at all. Some species this isn’t an issue, but those are often the ones that live in small groups or that are loners for most of their lives. I also imagine the main reason that the trainers [ie; the players] only ever encounter the magical method is because when the Pokemon is constantly fighting [even if for sport] and constantly on the move, this will convince their body that it isn’t safe for newborns, cue the trainers only see their Pokemon use the magic method. Also; From Bird Keeper Toby; the magic method is basically a fusion of the two magics, hence why outside observers are going to be confused for generations. You just watch a pair of Pokemon interacting and suddenly a giant egg forms between them like????
On: Combat, Competition, Etc; I have heard the comments on Pokemon fights being Dog-fights, I don’t have the awareness or words to explain whether or not this can be attributed. But there are some things I think I should point out: It is the responsibility of the trainer to ensure the Pokemon isn’t horribly injured and will be taken care of post-fight, Pokemon are typically shown to be more intelligent than normal animals [the exacts are weird], and Pokemon naturally engage in these fights regardless. None of these on their own would make this okay, and admittedly there is still a fine line that with the wrong information becoming canon can put the Pokemon world into full dystopian hellscape territory. None the less, we should think of the fights between trainers less like brutal dog-fights and more like duels between samurai or knights or whatever. Still brutal in many cases, but it’s more for the collective honor of the trainer and their team. When a Pokemon joins your team, it’s typically because you showed it that you are a competent strategist, in a sense you are the warlord showing the mercenary why they should swear loyalty to you and not simply continue being a rogue. To an extant this means that if some one has insulted the trainer, they also have insulted the Pokemon.
Continued: Combat, Competition, Etc; I imagine “proper” matches, like against gym leaders, there are rules that the player is unaware of. The animated special based on the games made it seem like Gym Leaders have many Pokemon to choose a team appropriate to the challenger’s level, and I quite like that idea. There is also the possibility that, like shown in some anime competitions, there are rules about how many Pokemon you can use. Chances are there aren’t any rules as to how many Pokemon you can use in the first two gym battles, aside from the legal carrying limit of six, so you would be allowed to beat Brock with an army of Nidoran if you wanted, but later gym battles would likely limit you to the same number of Pokemon as the Gym Leader. Though I imagine the last Gym doesn’t use this rule, due to the fact that the difference of one single Pokemon is negligible compared to the difference of skill between actual strategy vs “keep sending mediocre Pokemon until the enemy runs out” at this stage. Elite Four and their equivalents likely use the limit again, at least in some cases. These same Gyms likely have a universal rule that one can only use four attacks per Pokemon [as brought up prior]. Now I have a general set of theories regarding Alola and the Trials but that is later [I hope... I am at a bit before 3:15 right now... shut up I keep needing to start youtube music videos]. Now matches between random people probably aren’t regulated as much, so there can easily be matches that use roughly the same rules as the League and there can be “all out” matches, the latter of which are likely used by the Evil Teams [aka: the Mafia in gen one and two, Eco-Terrorists in gen three, a few cults, and you get the picture]. Like, seriously sometimes you’re dealing with people that are literally planning mass genocide and just waltzing into their base to stop them, would they seriously be above breaking every rule you’ve had to follow to earn your honor trinkets?
Regarding Pokemon Intelligence and Person-hood: I have this headcanon that the Pokemon language is at least 50% pure intention, this is to give Pokemon of all sorts universal understanding of each other. This means that one vocalization pattern can mean hundreds of things, say one word that means “food” would also be able to refer to each and every specific berry with just a twist of intention. This would be why humans can’t understand Pokemon but Pokemon can [at least mostly] understand humans. There is a canonical case of a human understanding Pokemon perfectly [or at least close enough] in all three main universes so it’s not impossible for humans to understand Pokemon, it just likely takes a couple random quirks of genetics and circumstances. Now: in Mystery Dungeon Pokemon are shown making villages, while in the game canon and most of the anime and manga canon [as far as I’m aware] they don’t. I imagine this being a case of the two groups having a fundamental difference in mindsets. Humans, by our nature, want to be better, nay, The Best, and will push ourselves to reach that point. We are also puny beings that are very lazy. This all combines result in humans developing ways to not only survive but to be able to kick someones’ ass [really ambitious people will want to be able to do so in two minutes flat], finding a way to go from point A to point B [regardless of if there is forest, valley, desert, or ocean between those points], and the ability to press a button and suddenly a pizza is put in your hands [five to fifteen minutes later] ready to eat. Pokemon on the other hand seem to typically be content with their pockets, a Pokemon will fight to be as strong as the locals, a Pokemon will only venture to ‘their’ areas [such as stationary species only traveling far enough to get water and food, or migratory species sticking to two or three homes], and they often see no reason to barter or develop monetary systems. They aren’t stupid, they just don’t have an in-built desire to advance like that, But they do see humans, the weakest of all beings in this world, make grand structures or traverse places the Pokemon would think untouchable. This also explains why mighty dragons and proud beasts, even skittish creatures, would follow humans to the ends of the earth and beyond.
Some Stuff Regarding Alola: >They likely aren’t viewed too greatly in-universe due to how long it took them ti set up a proper league, plus the fact they still don’t have gym battles. Think of it like how there are plenty of people that disregard certain people’s cultures as “inferior” because it doesn’t match the european systems >I imagine the Trials to be a bit more brutal than Gym Battles. This is because when you enter the Trial Grounds, there isn’t someone coming in with you, there isn’t a guide to stand nearby, and your final challenge is against a mostly feral Pokemon. Sure the Pokemon was technically trained by the Trial Captain, but I think that would be more in line with how Zoo keepers might ‘train’ the animals for behavior that won’t traumatize a kid rather than how people train dogs for the dog shows [you know with the hoop jumping and all that] >I imagine the Trials to work kind of like the the Sheikah Trails in Legend of Zelda; Breath of the Wild. aka: as long as you accomplish the goal [and in this case don’t cause too much carnage/etc], it’s allowed. So while the game doesn’t let you, I imagine it is totally fine to jump into the Pokemon fight along side your Pokemon, possibly even have your full team against the totem. >Quick Reason Note to Send Your Full Team Out, Ever: when up against a trainer, that tells them they could do the same, now you have to keep track of however many Pokemon they have, on top of everything else. Also have fun keeping track of let’s say three Pokemon all relying on you to lead them to victory, without the helpful game interface. >The Grand Trials would be a way to make sure trainers don’t think they can get away with basically bringing a crossbow to a game of darts, you’re forced into a Proper Match against a respected official.
I just remembered [re: scrolled up and checked] that i promised to explain my idea on Pokeballs: the short answer is that, due to what Pokemon are made of, they are capable of transforming into a pure energy state [basically returning to what they were in the giant egg] that takes up much less space. This ‘pure energy’ state is innately unstable so most Pokemon can’t just use it willy-nilly to shortcut tiny spaces or otherwise untraversable terrain. What they can do with this ability is to put themselves inside appropriate pockets, such as ones found in hollowed out apricorns, and go into a sort of half-conscious state. I reconcile this with Legends: Arceus’s lore drop of how pokeballs work via my above rule regarding human fallibility: All the researchers and other humans are seeing is the Pokemon seemingly shrinking and hiding in the pokeball, they don’t realize it is being stored in a pure energy state. Better pokeballs [like modern ones] might be better equipped to hold that energy, hence differing catch rates for different types of pokeballs, why the modern ones can shrink to the size of a marble, etc.

@nagiru Here we go again, the long posts continue! Now to reference one of my favourite RPG series... God I miss the classic Phantasy Star games.
Oh, is that so? You kidnapped the sister of Laya's greatest general, and you're just now starting to think that it might not have been a good idea?
Ah yes, I know that feeling when you remember you used to exclusively write het. Such a strange feeling to have, now that 99.9999% of my work is Extremely Queer. (Mind you I have a very religious mother and went to a religious school because it had the best science classes in the state - irony! - so I can say without any shadow of doubt that I didn’t even know there were queer options until my early twenties...)
I remember the ‘hybrid’ phase! I used to do that so often, it was wild... I had everything from demon-angel kids to part cats XD Ironically I did come back to the idea as an adult, I had this whole complicated magical-sci-fi world where one particular species was trying to avoid dying out so when they met new species they’d share this ritual allowing the creation of hybrid children... I should get back to that one day. I mean honestly, magical space ships are just cool and I focussed a lot on the various hybrids and their place in different societies and I kinda miss the grumpy pilot lass...
After Record Breaker and Daichi discovering he has a talent for earning trust and organising people I always thought he went into either diplomacy or human resources-style administration. He’s very good at bringing people together after all <3
Hibiki is absolutely the kind of person who tries to fly on no sleep and sheer balls until the point where he collapses from exhaustion. He was absolutely mainlining coffee and soft drinks during the game.
I’ve always wondered what Kazuya and Naoya would make of the world resets... Although knowing Naoya it probably involves him going “Oh for fuck’s sake not again’ while Kazuya flops on the floor next to him complaining that he has to start romancing Atsuro all over again. (Yes I absolutely OTP Kazuya/Atsuro, they are precious doofuses.)
Not only are the Hotsuin familiar with murder, in this case it takes a LOT of effort to stop Yamato escalating straight to it. He’s gotten better at not defaulting to ‘kill the fucker’ since the first world but look at what he did to Hibiki’s family how dare that pathetic slug hurt them?! (Yamato is rabidly protective of Hibiki and I cannot be convinced otherwise, and of course it’s going to extend to the little brother and the little brother’s boyfriend once he gets to know them.)
My favourite anything involving a prophecy has always been Pokemon the Movie 2000, where the prophecy literally says “And the world will turn to Ash” and for centuries everyone thought it meant burnt-stuff-ash and then Slowking looks at Ash Ketchum as it all goes down and just *snrk*. It’s pretty damn funny. Apart from that I really hate prophecies. I actually once had a world set up where there was an entire clan with the ability to see the future and one of the main characters was a Seer from this clan and even then they didn’t make prophecies because a. the future is mutable and b. when you only see short flashes of said future it can be very hard to work out what any of it means!
I miss Lily the Seer. She gave very few fucks.
FUCK Naoto’s Social Link. I’ve never finished it because someone showed me the Christmas Eve scene with her and I was so offended I almost gave up on the game entirely. Naoto and Kanji are both extremely queer-coded and I did not enjoy the game trying to pretend they weren’t.
Okay Luna and Ardyn becoming friends after she slaps the hell out of him is perfect and my new headcanon! Him realising he seriously underestimated her, her discovering why he’s as angry and fucked up as he is, slow tentative overtures of friendship... Love it!
I do stream a little bit because there’s a show here called Gogglebox that is extremely funny but almost impossible to watch on free to air, and my parents let me use their Foxtel account for it. I absolutely wouldn’t if I had to pay for it though, the disability pension is stretched thin already.
