There was something just a little different about this visit.

They had been sitting out of the Ketchum’s front porch, enjoying the crisp night air and getting caught up on each other’s lives since they had seen each other last.

Misty knew she had been doing a poor job of hiding what must have been a pretty obvious lovesick expression on her face, as even Ash had picked up on it and asked her why she was looking at him so funnily, but she was honestly finding it hard to care. Her Ash was home, bathed in moonlight and beautiful and passionately talking about his latest adventures, and maybe she was sick of hiding her feelings; maybe Ash was wonderful and deserved to know she knew it.

Maybe she wouldn’t hide it, just this once.

He paused a retelling of some battle he’d had against a particularly powerful alomomola, to stare at her again, looking just a touch self-conscious. “Seriously, is there something on my face?” he asked, but Misty just giggled.

“I’m just happy you’re here,” she told him sincerely. “I missed you.”

Ash’s eyes widened, understandably surprised by her honesty. Missing each other was one of those things they didn’t admit out loud, and she had just broken that unspoken rule. “You did?” he asked.

Misty nodded. “Of course, doofus. I always miss you when we’re apart.”

Ash seemed to take a moment to process that information, and, to her delighted surprise, a gentle blush bloomed across his cheeks. “Oh,” he murmured, suddenly looking timid. “I—I miss you too,” he admitted.

“Oh yeah?” she asked cheekily, feeling emboldened by his reaction.

Ash eyed her wearily, catching on to her subtle fishing, and smirked playfully. “Yeah, it’s too quiet out there without your constant nagging.”

“How dare you!” she gasped, pretending to be offended and lightly smacking him in the shoulder while he laughed. “We were having a moment!”

“I know! I know! I’m sorry! I couldn’t help it!” He reached an arm around her shoulders and pulled her into him in a cozy little side-hug of apology, which she allowed him to do with little argument, enjoying the warmth of his body next to hers.

“You’re lucky I love you,” she told him quietly, her face burning as she internally prayed he would think she just meant it in a friendly, casual way. Thankfully he just hummed, resting his head against hers and holding her just a bit tighter.

“Yeah. Love you too, Mist.”

Why I M O, Pokeshipping is dead. ( kinda hot take, sorry pokeshippers. )

So, pokeshipping. The very 1st ship in the Pokemon anime’s history. I personally am not a fan of it, I did watch the original anime, and I personally don’t like misty’s character. It was off putting to me.

Now as to what your here for, what killed pokeshipping. There are 3 main contributors to the death of pokeshipping.

1.) The length of time from when misty was replaced to now,

2.) Serena and Amourshipping

3.) The Pokémon sun and moon anime

The length of time from when misty was replaced to now.

Now while this might not have been much of an issue if the other 2 bullet points didn’t exist, it has been over a decade at this point, since we last saw misty, meaning that we have a severe lack in character development, and that gives time for other potentially better ships to be created, which leads me to my next point

Serena and Amourshipping.

Possibly one of the biggest ships right now, (which at this point isn’t going to fizzle out anytime soon. ) With Amourshipping going so far, as to introduce a major plot point in ash’s story by having Serena be his childhood acquaintance, many other points that multiple poketubers like Catch ‘Em All Saul, bring up in their videos from years past, to the kiss, and even the writers basically confirming the darn thing

So at this point, ( unless they throw all that away, which please. Don’t. ) there is next to no hope of pokeshipping to ever become cannon, which is only further proven by my last point,

The Pokémon sun and moon anime.

Now, this is honestly the iceberg that sank the ship, because Brock and Misty returned twice in the Sun and Moon anime, which I’m pretty sure was for let’s go promotion. Now this is where all hope is lost for pokeshipping because even though they returned twice, Misty had literally zero emotional moments with ash whatsoever. No pokeshipping pandering, no flashbacks, nothing. Here’s another video explaining that further

Now while the only good thing to come out of the re-return episodes was Brock possibly finally finding a girlfriend,

This was the point of no return for Misty and pokeshipping in general. Misty, even though she returned twice, in the most recent anime, had literally no development, and nothing to show how she grew as a character since her absence, her return seems pointless and devoid of substance, and with another ship still gaining popularity at an exponential rate, I’m sorry Serge and all you genwunners, but it's time to pay your respects and move on.

"Ash, why is the flower bent?"

The words had meant to be more questioning than accusatory, but the combination of a 45-degree angle stem and petals that resembled blasted firecrackers that had been filled with too much gunpowder was cause for...concern for Misty.

"What's wrong, you said you wanted a flower."

"Not if it's practically ruined!"

Ash thrust a dirt-covered finger towards the cliff he'd obtained the flower from. "I couldn't help it! Trying to climb down that cliff wasn't easy, you know!"

"Then why didn't you just send one of your Pokémon to do it?"

At this a small flush bloomed underneath the patches of dust on his cheeks. "Well, I wanted to be the one to pick it for you."

Softened eyes and a skipped heartbeat came together and Misty felt something lodge in her throat. She glanced back over to the cliff, barely able to make out the small bunch of flowers that Ash had nabbed his from. It swayed softly in the breeze, decidedly devoid of any weird angles on their stems.

She smiled before turning back to Ash. She reached forward to take the flower in her hand, stopping to savor the way her fingertips grazed his.

"Well, I guess it doesn't have to be perfect. Thanks, Ash."

His lips contorted into a wobbled grin, softly scratching his cheek. "I'll get you a perfect one soon. You might have to wait a while, though."

Misty practically etched his promise into her brain, the joy enough to compel her to lean forward and plant a soft kiss on his cheek. His eyes went wide, an undecipherable noise eking out from his throat. Misty grinned, turning back towards the campsite where the others were surely waiting. "When I get that perfect flower, maybe I'll kiss you for real. You might have to wait a while, though."

In all honesty, she shouldn't have been surprised when her words sent Ash sprinting back towards the cliff, loudly proclaiming that the next one would be "even prettier than her." She hadn't bothered to try stopping him; Ash "Headstrong" Ketchum would hardly be deterred. She watched him once again scale the cliffside, holding the bent flower in her hands.

Truth be told, it was already perfect.

Prologue 

Ash Ketchum is monumentally, severely, completely fucked. 

He leans against the fireplace of his childhood home, partially hidden by the couch and the not-so-small group of people littered around him and spilling into the adjoining dining space.

His head thunks against the wall as his friends and family clap and cheer, shouting over each other as they hurl congratulations and compliments, surrounding the two figures in the middle.

Though Ash’s eyes are closed and his hat is pulled low over his face, he sees clear as day the wide cerulean eyes and a beaming smile. The blinding glint of a diamond ring slipping onto a dainty finger. 

He sees brown eyes staring warmly at a joyous face. Sees the strong arms wrap around a slim waist and show no signs of budging. 

Ash can’t stop it, can’t stop seeing the moments burned into his mind, watching as his oldest friend, his best friend, stares in shock as her boyfriend of seven months drops onto one knee, pulls out a small, navy blue box, and asks the woman in front of him if she’d do him the honor of becoming his wife. 

He can’t stop replaying the moment that a breathy, elated yes slips out of soft, pink lips.

Misty Waterflower has just gotten engaged.

Misty Waterflower is to be married. Has agreed to it in front of everyone she cares about and more. Is wrapped up in the arms of a man she’s been with for all of a year, blushing and laughing as those around her, her sisters, her friends, Ash’s mom, all congratulate her. 

What a time to realize you’re in love with your best friend, right? 

So, yeah. Fucked.

Did you ever watch the Pokemon anime series as a kid?

Oh heck yes! I was 8 years old when the Pokémon anime first aired in North America, the target age group for the Pokémon brainwashing to take effect, and I loved it! Misty will always be my favorite character and I shipped her with Ash hardcore. Pokeshipping/AAML fanfiction were something I read every day, I was obsessed. I still ship them to this day, even though they didn’t become a couple in the end, but that’s what fanfiction and fanart is for lol

But my favorite Pokémon to this day is still Ditto. 🥰

I can’t draw Pokémon for crap though. XD

I’m not expecting people to understand that motive at all, but I wanted to mention the idea is based on a true story. On August 2nd ’23 was one of the darkest days in my life and I never want to forget what gift I received at exact that time. I'm thankful and now full of hope.

Misty eyes the whole situation warily, cautious to not get her hopes up that anything would be different here than it was last time.

Ash Ketchum, the unwitting holder of her heart, stands in the doorway to the kitchen, once again shoving food into his dumb face, either unaware or uncaring that he has positioned himself, once again, under the goddamn mistletoe.

“There’s no way he’s that dumb, right?” she asks Psyduck, who looks up at her with a blank and vacant expression. And Misty realizes that yeah, he absolutely could be that dumb, she’s seen him in action more times than she count.

She weighs her options, sipping her eggnog for a little extra liquid courage. She could a) ignore it, let someone else either give him a head’s up or try to steal a kiss and possibly get humiliated exactly as she had all those years ago. Or, who knows, maybe they would get a kiss. Ash had to have grown up at least a little since then, right? Right. Or, she could b) go over there and shoot her shot herself.

Decisions, decisions.

She hangs back and watches just a minute more, and when it becomes clear that Ash is there to stay, she makes her decision. Rolling her shoulders and standing up straight in a poor attempt at tricking herself into thinking she’s confident, she downs the rest of her eggnog in one gulp, slams her empty cup onto the window ledge, and strides over to the doorway, leaving Psyduck behind.

“Hey Ash,” she begins, innocently enough. Ash looks up from his plate of desserts and smiles, closed lip, his mouth full.

“Mi Mifty,” he greets her back. Misty doesn’t hold back her look of disgust.

“Ugh, gross,” she says, crinkling her nose. “Chew and swallow, would you?”

“Wurfing on if.”

She weighs her options again, questioning her own taste in men when she’s reminded that this is what she wants so badly to kiss, and sighs. She still thinks he’s adorable even when he’s being a total lechonk. This is it all right. “Take your time,” she tells him dryly, and finally, he manages to swallow his food and gives her a megawatt smile.

“Okay, there,” he laughs, at least looking sheepish. “What’s up?”

He seriously doesn’t know he’s under the mistletoe, she realizes, and can’t help but answer him by pointing up at the top of the door frame. “Well, that’s up, for one thing,” she says.

Ash follows her finger, his eyes widening when he finally notices the plant. “Oh,” he chokes out.

“No pressure,” she assures him when she sees the panic start to creep onto his face. “No need to go running across the room and into a table or anything. A simple no will do.”

He frowns at that, looking satisfyingly guilty. “Oh man,” he begins, “I’m sorry about that, Mist. I know it was a long time ago, and you wouldn’t have wanted to kiss me anyway, but that was pretty shitty of me.”

Misty cringes internally at the ‘you wouldn’t have wanted to kiss me anyway’, and outwardly offers him a kind smile. “It’s seriously fine, Ash. We were kids.” Dumb, dumb kids.

Ash’s frown deepens, then suddenly, his eyes harden and he looks up at her, a worryingly determined glint in his eyes. “Well, I’ll just have to make it up to you,” he declares.

“What?” Misty asks, before she is all of a sudden being kissed on the cheek by Ash Ketchum.

He pulls away and they stare at each other with wide eyes, like they both can’t believe that Ash had just done that, when he decides to officially give her heart attack and says, “Okay, one down, one to go.”

“One to go?!” she cries, and it’s Ash’s turn to look at her liked she’s the idiot.

“That one was for last time,” he explains. “We’re under it again, aren’t we?”

And Misty, perhaps possessed or emboldened by Ash’s actions, lets her heart speak before her head can stop it. “Well are,” she confirms. “And we’re not kids anymore either. Shouldn’t this kiss be a little more gown up, too?”

Ash’s eyes widen, but his expressions quickly shifts into something determined, despite his reddening cheeks. “It should,” he states confidently, and before she knows it, he’s leaning in.

Misty is no expert, but she’s pretty sure the kiss is worth the wait.
