one direction has been in the news as of late and on my mind (and on repeat) so i’m taking it upon myself to combine my two interests and describing what kind of directioner each batfam member is. this is for pure shits and giggles and not really based on canon, im going off pure vibes and spite.

dick - dick is NOT ashamed of his love for one direction and works out to them frequently. he’s definitely a harry fan and his favorite era of harry looks is prince hair but also long hair bc mulletwing, duh. his favorite album is midnight memories and favorite song is happily. he def saw them and 5sos in concert and remembers exactly where he was when zayn announced he was leaving the group.

jason - jason only knows so much one direction cause dick blares it in the cave when they’re working out. jason fucks with zayn and louis so hard and believes their 2014 VMAs look is top tier (which, valid). jason let himself listen to Midnight Memories, cause he appreciated the aesthetic of the album, his favorite song is the title track, Midnight Memories. to spite dick, however, he will bump The Wanted, since dick was there to witness the 1D vs. The Wanted beef.

tim - tim wasn’t a directioner but he did stumble on the adventurous adventures of one direction as a kid and may or may not know all the words to that iconic first episode, so he knows a decent chunk of lore. he also scrolls through l*rry forums when he’s bored and enjoys poking holes in their logic (tim has fought babygaters and come out on top). tim does not have a favorite album but he does enjoy their cover of one way or another/teenage kicks that they did for red nose day as well as teenage dirtbag. tim also does not have a favorite member but if he had to pick, gun to his head, he’d probably say louis.

steph - do not cite the deep magic (best song ever music video intro) to stephanie, she was there when it was written. steph is a diehard directioner. she watched the icarly episode where they guest starred when carly gave harry jungle worms. stephanie read the one direction imagines, wrote and read one direction x y/n fanfiction, she breathed these boys and would give a kidney to one of them if asked. steph loves their whole discography but i find her being very partial to their fetus era, so take me home i think is her fave, and her fave song is heart attack, that went platinum in her bedroom. steph swore she was gonna marry zayn with that cinnamon curl in his hair and a little part of her still thinks she will.

damian - this baby tried so hard not to let the 1D bug bite him but made in the AM came on a playlist dick had made for him and he was a goner. damian outwardly craps on them but when he’s alone, he listens to FOUR and MITAM, exclusively. he doesn’t think he could take them seriously as musicians if he listened to anything before then. damian likes liam bc when he tallied it up, liam had written the most of his favorite songs (i actually did this the other day, liam and louis wrote 23 of the songs on my fave 1D songs playlist) and liam is the “leader” of the group. damian really loves “if i could fly” and has even printed sheet music to learn to play it on piano.

duke - for duke, one direction has put out what he likes to call “certified hood classics”. he was familiar with their mainstream pop hits and has maybe even pretended to be a bigger fan to impress girls but he did geniunely become a bigger fan when he moved into the manor. like jason, duke fucks with zayn so hard and midnight memories is the shit for him. he enjoys “don’t forget where you belong” but his favorite mainstream hit is “kiss you”.

cass - stephanie introduced cass to one direction and while cass isn’t as obessesed with them as steph, she really does love FOUR. “once in a lifetime” is so calming for her. she finds a lot of the songs on FOUR are good for working out, dancing, etc. she also loves a lot of zayns solo work. niall is her favorite tho cause of his kind face.

bruce - in an attempt to get closer to his kids, he tried listening to their music and honestly did not see the appeal until like halfway through FOUR. steph once showed him a photo in their fetus eras and asked him hypothetically which one he’d let her and/or cass date if the opportunity ever arose itself. he said they all looked very nice. then she showed him a photo of them during the FOUR era, all tatted up, and asked again. he said either harry or niall. bruce’s favorite song is fool’s gold. steph makes an offhand comment about wanting to do everything in her power to get the band back together and bruce takes her very literally and starts attempting to make phone calls. the whole family puts a (reluctant) stop to it before bruce breaks twitter.

barbara - before she became oracle, babs was on the team of directioners who hacked security cameras to watch them at the airport, it was sort of her first foray into computer skills. she has locked that part of her deep in her soul but without it, she wouldn’t be as proficient as she is now. barbara has loved louis as long as shes been familiar with 1D and loves how sassy he is. her favorite song is “i want to write you a song” and her favorite album is MITAM.

I had to take some time to process everything and finally jumped back to social media. I've always been a 5sosfam and directioner from the very start. So seeing the news of Liam's passing deelpy broke my heart. I was devastated knowing that 1D will never be whole again.

Liam, as Harry described, he's the person who lived with his heart on his sleeve, had always been supportive to all the boys I love including 5sos. Despite all the terrible things he did, he always had been the cheeky boy we know and we'll miss terribly. I just know he is now at peace, he won't suffer anymore from the crazy bullies he had to constantly face down here.

In my heart, there will always be 5 of them no matter what. He'll be watching the boys from up above. Rest in peace, Payno. Thank you for everything. 🤍🕊

woke up to the news of Liam passing yesterday. ever since 1D "broke up", I haven't caught up with the members' individual lives but I've listened to a couple of their songs throughout the years.

man, I already grieved One Direction for years as a teenager. can't believe I have to do it again as an adult.

One Direction is the first ever band I loved. I remember my sisters going ??? every time I blast their songs but ultimately loving them; I remember washing the dishes while belting out their songs; I remember my little brother going "rock me 🤘😜" as a toddler, not even knowing the song's implications and me laughing so hard;

my sisters and i have these huge age gaps and what connected me to them is music. their music AND my music. they loved One Direction, 5SOS, and BTS because i loved them too.

I remember participating the Directioners X Beliebers follow spree on Twitter; I remember jumping up and down my parents' bed as I watch my borrowed Up All Night DVD a million of times; I remember saving up my allowance for months just so I can buy their albums on my birthday (they release theirs every November);

I remember missing watching This Is Us on theaters because I was out for a camping, so I was bummed, but my mom surprised me with their magazine; I remember my classmate gifting me a folder filled with the printed lyrics of songs from Midnight Memories; I remember my classmate sending me Torrent downloaded copies of songs from Made In The AM;

I remember suffering from an undiagnosed mental illness and the dark clouds and how their songs gave me life; I remember the heartbreak and betrayal I felt when Zayn left (I was 15 and not as chronically online as I am today); I remember loving Infinity even though it's only the lyrics were leaked; I remember crying over History MV and the XFactor episode when they sang Infinity; and most of all, I remember waiting for 18 months to be over. :(

I already gave up hope of them reuniting because I don't want to be hurt again. But Liam's death is so final. I am grieving for my cherished memories, for the person he once was, and the what-could-have-been's. Everything will never be the same again. :(

these are around the timeline of the show (so like 2020s)

Nick and Imogen grew up together and therefore developed similar obsessions over things in media - Nick became a directioner and Imogen became a 5sos stan. (She's a hardcore Luke Hemmings stan)

When they were first getting together, Nick would sent various 1D/Solo songs to Charlie. Charlie's favourite 1D song is Clouds

Charlie was a Percy Jackson kid and he'd spend his lunchtimes as a Year 7-8 in the library re-reading the books. This is where he met Isaac, who was holding a copy of a novel that was adapted into a film that Tao liked, and the group was born.

Sai also read Percy Jackson when he was younger, and he used that to bond with Charlie when he initially joined the rugby team.

The two of them get Nick to read the books, and he gets HOOKED, then reads to Heroes of Olympus series and gets hooked on that, but it's because Nick has a type and Percy Jackson is part of that type

The group has a huge sleepover whenever they want to watch a new film, usually at either Nick or Tao's houses due to the bigger spaces. On occasion they'll go to either Elle or Imogen's houses.

They watched Saltburn and Challengers together.

The Directioner to marketing exec pipeline

For my fellow 2012-2014 Tumblr obsessives. A heartfelt tribute to the band, the years spent together online, and the many wonderful friends and life I made along the way. /

A few weeks ago it was my friend’s birthday. Six years ago, almost to the day, she and I met at a cupcake cafe, and bonded over the years we spent on Tumblr and Twitter as ultimate 1D girlies while we ate our cupcakes. We laughed about how we got follows from celebrities, or replies from the band, and how we spent every waking moment online, obsessed by different YouTubers, bands, and TV shows.

When I think about the string that lead me to that cafe in Edinburgh, it starts with Harry Potter. I was six years old in Orlando, Florida, and my parents took us to see the Philosopher’s Stone. In the rest of the pictures of our holiday, I have gigantic, frizzy hair because I begged my mom to braid it every night so I could look like Hermione. Six years old, but I knew how to immediately decide to devote myself to obsession.

Less than ten years later, I was watching trailers of movies on YouTube. At that point, I already had accounts on Twitter and Tumblr, but I wasn’t really sure what I was supposed to do with them. From the moment I clicked on the “What Makes You Beautiful” Youtube video, everything became second nature.

There was no call to action at the end of that video saying “now pick your favourite and love them forever.” There was no need: we watched it and knew immediately what our job was. I wasn’t even halfway through before I knew exactly which one was mine (and I’ve never wavered). Credit is due to the YouTube algorithm for filling my recommended videos with content from their X Factor days, because I spent the rest of that night watching the videos of them on the stairs, searching them on Tumblr, and falling down the 1D rabbit hole.

It was as easy as breathing! There was no ‘how-to’ guide, the word ‘stan’ didn’t even exist yet. The way the internet let us collectively fawn over anything from a band, to a character in a book, to a random person on YouTube felt like a brave new world. I followed One Direction online alongside girls from the UK, Brazil, the Philippines, everywhere. I started my deep dives into other worlds with Harry Potter, but it was as a One Direction fan that I became embedded in the globalisation of the internet. I went from One Direction, to Zoella, to Sherlock, to Doctor Who, to 5SOS, and eventually I graduated from high school and got a life. By the time I did that though, I knew, fundamentally, how the internet worked.

In 2013, I was there as the Mischacopolypse started. I saw those first few posts trickle in. Later that year, I watched the full 7 hour 1D Day livestream. Year after year, I waited for the new Zoella Vlogmas intro like it was the lighting of the Rockefeller tree. Online content, I learned, was addicting because it was the ultimate way to connect with people. I made friends with girls in Toronto, Vancouver, North Carolina, and England. Not just “internet friends” but real, solid, sweet hearted friendship. I still watch their lives unfold on the internet with pride.

By 18 I had built my own website on Wordpress; I knew how to optimise my blogs for SEO, and set up a tripod with a ring light. I knew how to edit on iMovie and MovieMaker, how to find the latest trends, and even how to search engine optimise on YouTube. And, I leveraged it. I had not only a blog and a YouTube channel, and I tried every new thing. I got my first brand deals, and by 21, I got my first job as a Social Media and Web Coordinator for the uni newspaper. When I graduated, there was only one place to go: the home of all my teenage obsessions, and the reason I was who I was, the UK.

Before moving, I debated between Brighton (home of Zoella) and Edinburgh (home of Harry Potter), and it was really just fate that made me choose the latter. Immediately upon moving, I went back to my roots and got a job as a Harry Potter tour guide. I started creating like you wouldn’t believe. I got invited to events, and even more brand deals.

By this point I knew what sold: the person, the story, the personal connection. People needed to feel like they knew me in order to be invested, so I mined my life for content. Within a year, I got a job as a marketing exec, pointing to my blog and my work as a content creator to get me in. Five years later, I have two degrees in history, but a big girl job in content marketing.

Last weekend that same friend and I were driving home together, listening to One Direction and laughing about how we both ended up in marketing. Both confident there was no reason for it other than our obsession with 1D in our teenage years. At the same time, on different sides of the ocean, we fell in love with One Direction, learned Wordpress, obsessed over Zoella, created Instagram personalities, built our “brands”, and eventually, settled for jobs big girl jobs in marketing.

More than our jobs, we have six years of friendship built (from my side) on the trust that because we both know what 2013 Twitter was like as a One Direction fan, we just get each other. We’ve shared countless jokes about the old days, (remember the pandemonium when the pictures of Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and baby Lux in Central Park dropped??!!!!), and looking forward to when we’re old and there’s inevitably a reunion tour. This was the norm, until she messaged our groupchat at 11:30pm on her birthday, and I only knew it was serious because she wouldn’t be so dramatic if it wasn’t. A quick Google search confirming the truth, one of the most jarring, official endings to anything so far in my life.

When you hear ‘stans’ say they owe their lives to a band or a celebrity, they don’t always mean it in a parasocial or ‘this song saved me when I had serious mental health problems’ sort of way. I was never that intensely obsessed with One Direction, but I wouldn’t have my career, I wouldn’t have met my friend, my husband, I wouldn’t have my home, or, god forbid, my cat(!) if I hadn’t clicked play on that video fifteen years ago.

It feels like a personal loss not because I have a parasocial relationship with Liam Payne, but because in my life there was a clear world before, with him in it, and now a world after, without. It is as simple as saying: it is hard to come to terms with a world without someone who completely created the world that you live in.

before i worked in music journalism and literary studies, before i was into kpop, before i was into fandom in general, before i was into 5sos, i was into one direction. my engagement with their community in those lonely awkward formative years (for me, ages 9-12) was so fundamental. i do not grieve; rather, i feel sadness at the fact that liam payne was a product of abusive childhood stardom, and horrified at how he passed that suffering on. 22 years old me has such nuance that would be lost on 12 year old me, and i mostly feel pain for those he hurt, those who knew and loved him, and those who feel as if him and one direction changed who they were. i think being a directioner shaped how i interact with and how i consume music, how i approach community, how i show my passions. the little girl in me whose first pieces of merch were an i <3 1D shirt and the 1D scholastic book fair poster seems completely erased, suddenly. the graduate student i am today is, perhaps, surprised, and mostly honestly saddened by how his life turned out and how he died and how his victims will never get closure. i wish maya henry and the other women who came forward more than the best, and i wish the same for liam’s family.

Goodbye and End of an Era ...

Hello to 1D and 1 Directioners alike,

I want to start this post by saying how I like to think I was lucky to see 1D when they were still all 5 members and also we saw 5sos at the same time as 1D and life was good. Also in the initial first years of 1D, Liam was one of my favorite members. In the latter parts of 1D, that transitioned to loving the group as a whole.

But now as we come to face reality with the news of Liam's death who was a crucial and important member of 1D and who has been very disrespected and mistreated in his death by the media (specifically TMZ - shame on you). They took his humanity as well as personality and him just as a human being and made it a spectacle. No one whether or not they are a Celebrity or not, should not be subject to disrespect when they die because even though they are famous (whether by reputation or by career), they should still be at the end of the day, treated as a human being.

There is no amount of empathy or sympathy that can be extended to Liam's family, friends, or one's that were close to him.

As a 1D fan who supported all five members equally. I think the boys when they started their solo careers (after the end of 1D) created music that had it's own uniqueness to it. Liam's in particular was very upbeat for the most part (not all of his music was upbeat but most of it was). My favorite song in particular from him was either Polaroid or Get Low. His music was also the type of music you could play at a party or if you were in need of a hype up during the day. Louis's music feels like a distant big brother giving you a hug and rooting for you. Harry's music is good for when it's a bit rainy out and you are snuggle deep into a blanket, with your fuzzy socks on and a cup of tea or a mug of Hot chocolate or coffee nearby and your favorite show or movie on the tv and it's peaceful and gentle too like Harry himself. Niall's music is good for when you are feeling nostalgic and want to reminiscence on old memories. Zayn's music is all his own and feels very much like Liam's (a bit) but has a bit more edge to it and makes you feel a bit more confident (than you would initially).

Overall, their different genres of music are enjoyed not just by me but 1D fans all over the world.

I would like to say I hope you are at peace and that you are having the best time of your life up in Heaven and that your band mates as well as your family, friends, and those closest to you as well as the fans hope you are at peace too.

I also know that I never met you in real life but seeing you and the rest of 1D as well as 5sos in concert when I was 16 was one of the best memories I have in life and I cherish it often.

It came after a rough time in my life and I can't thank you and the rest of 1D enough for making that one of the best memories in my life.

I will make you and the rest of 1D proud by chasing my hopes and dreams and impact the world to change for the better. I hope you rest well and that you are at peace truly.

I would also like to say as I close out this post by saying 1D and fans in general thank you for allowing me to be part of this experience and I hope for the future that we have more moments (with one less member but that he is still memorialized within future moments of 1D).

In 2014, being a 5SOS fan meant that 1D was a part of the package, and if 1D was doing something, even if you weren’t the biggest Directioner, you threw everything you had into supporting them, because they brought us 5SOS, and 5SOS is my everything.

wioeiudygsuia honestly i was exposing myself as a kpop stan too (although i like to defend myself and say that as i get older i'm becoming more of a kdrama stan. just as long as people ignore the two different emotional support going seventeen episodes i have in my other tabs rn) but it was geniunely so weird. As a Directioner by month two of the "hiatus" people had already gone from One Dream, One Band, One Direction to Leafs Forever. I vaguely recollect two big blogs before the band even broke up were into hockey lightly so I think that was the powder keg. I had already been into kpop by the time One Direction was formed on the xfactor so I juggled the two of them but for most people One Direction was the last great Western boyband and with 5sos on hiatus at the time (and a debate on whether or not they counted as a boyband), the only option to get your boyband fix for us fans of the genre was in kpop.

anyway tldr: if this fandom keeps being dead for a month more, I look forward to seeing everyone's urls and going on their blog to read fanfics about ATEEZ and see their fanarts of the Canucks.

Okay this is SO niche and I feel like this'll only make sense to me but hear me out.

So I'm totally on the 1d/little mix/5sos to kpop pipeline (still very into all three of those groups btw) and I'm like obsessed with Boys Planet ATM and like, maybe this is just 2015 brainrot at work or smth

But haobin are so Jade/Niall coded and like there's layers to this it's not apparent until you overthink it

Cuz, like anyone who was there during the heyday of 1D and Little Mix will remember how both groups were marketed as direct counterparts to each other

And the fact that Niall had a hilariously obvious crush on Jade in the early days and tweeted about her in a way that only a teenage boy with an all-encompassing crush could ever do.

Everyone vote Little Mix. Jade is such a little cutie (or smth like that)

And whenever LM were asked who their favourite member of 1D was Jade would often say Niall because she thought he was cute.

And like, I don't think they were ever forced to do this, like I think they were genuinely friends who quite liked each other.

But marketing like jumped on it and suddenly their whole thing became
