I love discussions around their dlcs I wish people would genuinely talk more about itz going into depth into the themes of the dlcs and how they affect Derek and Baxter as characters, but then again I'm someone who loves analyzing the media they consume so djdkdkjd. With how i played the the dlcs over all me and my friend Lo (@/oiulse) would choose which boy to play the dlc and stream it on call, so Lo picked Baxter and i took Derek, it was really funny cause casual constantly played in our heads during the Baxter dlc (bless lo btw for gifting me both dlcs labyu oomf 🫰)

When i played the first moment from dereks dlc my voice started like acting up from how long THAT specific moment was, maybe its just me but the first moment in particular felt really long, I get it though its the first time ur meeting the suarez family and in no way did i NOT enjoy it, but there were indeed moments where im like DAMN ITS STILL NOT OVER cause of how tired my voice was getting LMFAO, all the other moments were rlly fun my favorite one from the dlc was where u hang out with liz on daddy day and there was an option to gift a card to cliff 🥹, his step 4 was also a bunch of fun i loved the family bonding get to do with the suarez brothers (u can just tell that i love family aus) and getting to hang out with derek made me love him more as a chr, HIS STEP 4 VOICE IS STILL A JUMPSCARE TO ME FROM HOW DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT IT IS (no hate to the va btw) STILL VERY FUNNY THOUGH HAHAHA, i made it so that Derek, kori and cove get to be neighbors before the both of them get married so now they hang out LOTS

With THE Baxter FUCKING Alexander Ward

I heard from another friend that the baxter's dlc was gonna be angsty and i was like oh hell fuckin yeah i love angst! AND THERE CERTAINLY WAS ANGST ILL TELL U THAT MUCH, since i was watching lo play through the Baxter dlc i will admit there were a few times where i spaced out cause ANOTHER fun fact, we played the dlcs like really late on my timezone so i was either drawing while Lo was playing or i was in the brink of conking the fuck out, i was able to know what was going on overall i think the ONLY moment i like fully spaced out on was when the mc and baxter were like out drinking or smth and there was this entire thing with the bartender and the singer, that specific scene in particular i was fully focusing on smth else and it wasnt till later that when i played the baxter dlc for myself that i knew what was finally going on, since me and lo have our castaways au to think abt while playing these dlcs we were building aus upon aus of what lo's mc would do when meeting with baxter again after 5 years its fun lo has never been the same since and neither have i, the angst was good soup and i can see why baxter's dlc was more expensive than derek's LMFAO

But ironically enough the dlc that made me cry was DEREKS DLC,,, that moment on the step 4 epilogue with the brothers having a heart to heart is going to be MY ROMAN EMPIRE, I FUCKING LOVE FAMILIES BRO GAUGHHHH

rambling about headcanons, designs, and my process and stuff under the readmore, because i wanna talk about it but dont want the post to be super long !!

i had originally planned to not have a background and then at the last second i decided to speedrun drawing one in a few hours so um. quality difference but its fine. also unrelated but im pretty sure everything about how i draw animals and anthros makes it very obvious i used to be in the warrior cats fandom lol. anyway onto the designs!!

the gold on techno is scars from the totem at the execution, which i think is a pretty common thing for techno designs. he isnt supposed to be a piglin, but rather similar species of anthropomorphic pig. also his mane and tail fluff are naturally brown but he dyes them pink ^_^ so cool !! um. i maaayyy have forgotten the crown until i was way too far into the piece to add it. haha. oops. pretend its missing because. uuh. hes in a casual outfit. "but he still has the cape" yeah its comfy. "but dream has a mask thats not casual" dream is dream he does Not relax fully ever. see entirely intentional i would never make a mistake.

dream is an original shapeshifter species i came up with because i couldnt decide what i wanted him to be. i havent decided on a name for the species yet but i plan to make almost every solid-color or nearly solid color mcyt into this species. theyre mostly involuntary/unconscious shapeshifters. so like they change slowly over weeks or months to adapt to their surroundings, with little conscious control. basically i wanted him to be like five different things so i shoved them together lol, rabbit ears but in a pattern that looks like an axolotl, a cool tail, TOE BEANS tho you cant see them. this was actually the first time ive ever had a dream design im happy with so thats really nice.

i um. i made full use of my time lol, i spent a bit over a week on the lineart, another week on the coloring, and maybe a week and a half on rendering. unless i suddenly became shit at math(which is possible) that adds up to roughly the amount of time i had to work on it. im really proud of myself actually since i usually take a while to do art, and i wasnt sure i would be able to make something id be happy with in this amount of time. but i did! woah!! this was my first time participating in a fandom gift exchange and it was so fun, and also helped motivate me to draw more instead of getting distracted like i usually do (classic adhd moment) lol. anyway super cool!!

on your post about how destiny actually works in ever after i wanted to share some of my thoughts!!!

firstly, (ive had this one in my mind since i watched the show as a kid) they introduce the characters as "abc, daughter/son of xyz" and their stories are continued through the generations, so, for some, wouldn't their forever after partner's parent, be their parent too??? like okay there's apple white, daughter of snow white and daring charming, son of king charming LIKE HOW DOES THAT WORK???? when snow white was fulfilling her destiny wasn't it king charming that woke her up???? like how does that work

also, it's only daring and apple who are (at first) set for each other, everyone knows daring will wake apple from her sleep but the rest of the princesses don't have their princes what about briar? ashlynn?

then, it seems only the first born has to follow in their parents' fairytale footsteps like in the case of holly and poppy so what do the younger siblings do? what's their destiny like dexter charming, he had a page in the book of legends but had no story to go with it

this is a lot but im really awestruck with how destiny is such a fickle thing, apparently your destiny can be taken away from you just by signing in the book of legends, it's not even confirmed i suppose, it can change like how daring ended up with rosabella and not apple, etc etc

destiny in ever after high has so much untapped potential i love rotating it in my mind so thank you so much for this ask!

first off, eah has confirmed that there are four unrelated charming clans from which fairytales draw their sundry heroes so it's logical to assume that all current kings charming serving as their famous fairytale wives' arm candy come from different clans as the princes charming slated for their daughters' destinies. briar's prince i always assumed to be unknown due to the fact that she won't meet him in another hundred years. apple's prince being determined from the beginning i've always chalked up to the snow white tale being so important that grimm, snow and co. all felt the need to lock the details down as early as possible. pair the most eligible princess in the land with the most eligible prince in the land and chain their destinies together before fate gets other ideas and all that.

also YES, the birth order aspect of fairytale inheritance itches at my brain soooo hard. does the destiny go only down the line of the eldest? if the protagonists of the tale are siblings, are the next protagonists their respective firstborns and thus cousins? or does the destiny lineage go to whoever in the birth order has the most important role? can you be chosen randomly for a tale that wasn't in your family? and it's made even more confusing bc eah canon says "both! all! yes!" the rapunzel destiny falls to the eldest twin. the current hansel and gretel destiny falls to cousins. the dancing princess destiny goes all the way down the line of the youngest daughter. the charmings are all expected to fill in as either heroes or damsels for whatever tale needs them. it's WILD.

my personal interpretation is that just to cover all the bases, grimm keeps the school open to all descendants of the major players until they know for certain who destiny has the most affinity with. case in point: justine dancer only being confirmed as the twelfth princess when she started sleepdancing in the webisodes despite all eleven of her older sisters having been chosen beforehand. it makes one wonder if there's a method to knowing which sister needs to have the full dozen (the eldest? the youngest?) or if ALL the madames try to get all the way to twelve Just In Case. could you imagine the family gatherings? hell.

(i love thinking of the dancing princess eldritch nightmare family orchard. one of my eah ocs is the seventh daughter of the seventh dancing princess who's only here bc it would have looked unsporting if nobody from their branch came, despite all signs pointing to justine, and she didn't really have alternative plans. she's just chilling. at least until miss mabinogion crashes into her life and she finds herself playing co-conspirator to a certain flower-faced adulteress's Operation Goodbye Earl.)

i think bc of the sleepdancing there's a lot of flexibility in the line-up of the twelve princesses, so they can be siblings down the line of whoever married the soldier, or they can be firstborn cousins, or they can be first daughter of the first daughter, second daughter of the second, etc. etc. no matter how hard grimm et al. try to hammer down destiny, every retelling still finds a way to veer off the rails. so every contradictory version of every fairytale you've ever heard? probably happened at one point. it was never gonna be science.

another thing i'm really interested in are destinies where the protagonist has to become their child's villain. you ever think about how the juniper tree cycle would necessitate the butchered child eaten by their father to become the parent that eats their child? eah never went that hard but i can. i will. (miss juniper tree rounds out my eah oc roster and she is appropriately furious about it.) cyclical destinies where happy endings don't mean jack are sooo good.

also yes!! that whole thing where destiny doesn't even play by the rules of the people who try to corral it (darling is apple's prince, daring is the beast, raven is one of the seven dwarves, etc. etc.) even when the Book is in play is just !!!!!!! really makes it feel like destiny is a much larger and more powerful force than anybody can really reckon with.

im still very confused about one thing, can you just bullshit any setup to perform any effect and intention is all that binds it together? or are there some rules that always apply like "red roses mean love" or can i use a red rose to do something completely unrelated? can i grab the setup for a healing spell and craft a narrative of "this will cause my computer to magically recognize the intended function of my spaghetti code and execute it" and poof, its that kind of spell now?

Is Intent All That Binds a Spell Together?

There are probably some witches who believe intent is all you need to do successful spell work or that you could craft that narrative. I don't entirely believe that. Just like how I urge people away from general substitutions like quartz can be used for any crystal, when y'all ask me questions like this I'm going to answer based on what in my opinion will get you results. Of course I am biased towards my beliefs just like anyone else. You are welcome to decide to believe whatever you want as long as it's not harming anyone. However, I will be continuing this post without exploring the idea that intent is all you need for successful spell work. 

Intent is important but I don’t think it’s all that binds a spell together in effective spell work. I think it is a combination of solid intention but also solid spell selection, preparation, method and ingredients that makes a spell work. If you’re not familiar with manipulating energy these steps and a good physical source of it will help guide you and make sure you don’t exhaust yourself. 

I wouldn't say any certain rule always applies, but it also isn't as simple as intent is everything you need. You need methods. You need correspondences. These things will give the spell energy. But what those are? That will vary a lot depending on tradition, beliefs, culture, etc. For example a lot of other cultures have very different associations with color, or ideas about how the elements work. This will change their view on spell work, especially if they approach it the way a lot of books on modern witchcraft and Wicca do. They put a big emphasis on these things and many others that vary. 

Yes you can use roses for love. But all plants are complex, roses have other correspondences. Other cultures may have other associations and I think those are valid.

You could craft that narrative. No one is going to stop you. But I'd argue the methods wouldn't carry the same symbolism that you need. And likely a vague list of ingredients needed for a love spell would be very different than for a specific technical goal like that in many traditions. If crafting that random narrative is valid, going to work or not, and how you draw the line on all that is up for debate and going to depend on the witch.

I know you probably want a straightforward answer but as someone that's been writing spells for years, they're not straightforward. I’d love to give you that answer but spells are complicated and that’s why I love them and writing them. I hope this ramble helps anyways.  The most straightforward answer I can give is this: There are going to be rules, but they're flexible and dependent on what you were taught and believe. Only you can decide that and that's what makes witchcraft so wonderful and overwhelming!

so i watched the fnaf movie and i have some thoughts. mostly not good but certainly some thoughts!

unpopular opinion but the fnaf movie was frustrating to me because i didn’t feel like it followed the lore at All. like i appreciated all the references (kicked my feet and scream whispered in the theater to my mom when i saw the racing game print on the shirt of the guy who dies in the kitchen) but like the overarching plot made no sense to me. here are some rambling points. long post incoming

why did afton kidnap garrett (who is nonexistent in the games afaik) from a Campground? this is completely unrelated to the typical afton kidnappings and seems like a major stretch

why is vanessa his (afton’s) daughter? this feels like they tried to smash steel wool lore and scott cawthon lore together and failed worse than steel wool failed at making security breach have a point

why do we care about the mike schmidt namedrop if it isn’t an alias for afton’s son like in the games? why does afton recognize the last name and specifically get mike to work the job, then say he didn’t want mike to even get involved. my brother in christ YOU INVOLVED HIM

yet another piece of media where afton randomly dies. except Different. i don’t understand what is going on here this isn’t how it happened it’s a literal rewriting of the canon lore

the drawings thing was also very odd. the whole point of the animatronics coming to kill you originally in 1 and 2 was BECAUSE they knew an adult had killed them and they thought mike was william. there was no special drawing mind control. felt once again like a steel wool lore transplant, extending control over vanny (vanessa) to the animatronics

Other Odd Stuff

there was a weird split between horrifying fates and drawn out gore and people being cut in half in impossible ways and….. cutting the tension in half by building a table fort and tickling a child to death. really? every single climatic buildup in this movie felt like it was followed by comedy

my mother pointed out watching this movie that it continues a trope “autistic child provides key help through special connection with main plot problem, and then is immediately cured”. i have to say i kind of agree because why else call her mentally ill at the beginning? go out of the way to show her being by herself drawing (which is FINE! it’s OKAY!!) and then socializing with other kids after the ghost deal is over?

This is literally the sweetest ask I’ve ever received thank you! Honestly I’m in a bit of a similar spot. I’ve been struggling to pick up my tablet for projects unrelated to work for a while now and even when I do I really struggle to finish projects. That wip of Luz for example has been a wip for… four months? A half a year? It’s been a while and there’s many others that are even older.

I’m really happy seeing them got you inspired though! If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that drawing at all is better than never drawing. It’s not even about productivity or completion. It’s that you have the opportunity to do something you enjoy sometimes as well as the opportunity to make beautiful and cool things. Even if you never finish things or post them for others to see making art is still fulfilling and worthwhile. Despite my creative struggles I still enjoy bringing things to life so it makes me happy that my art is inspiring others to do the same!

I don’t have much art of Luz because they’re a more recent character and my burnout has made it hard, but if you like them you might also enjoy my art of Lucéena (tagged as that name or under Ja’roach) Luz is a pathfinder revamping of Lucéena after her dnd campaign ended so the two share a lot of similarities. Their designs are a little different though because I didn’t want to feel beheld to old character choices I’d made. I wanted the similar vibes but with a fresh start. One day I’d like to do more art for Luz! Or maybe even a piece with the two of them together

Anyway i actually have so much trouble thinking of anything for gustavo ever lmao. Everything i have for him I've adopted from other people; rem [brickattack] as mentioned on the big post, and @synthlet/softersynths for a lot of other things. [and a couple others too but iirc synths was the one who started those ppl on it as well gfjdjds] which is to say, you'd probably get better/more interesting answers from those guys :p but yeah, fp and gus are pretty close. It's the general exposure/familiarity, the fact that fp is just a happy/pleasant and easy-to-like dude personality-wise, and for gus specifically there's also a level of "he shares a lot of traits with peppino, without peppino's Baggage™"

that last point is very very interesting but i dont know if i'd Actually get to doing a lot with it bc i typically make fake pep His Own Guy, with his similarities to peppino being almost sort of coincidental. i really really really like coming at peppino and fake pep from the "equals and opposites" angle, which like, that Can still apply for that last bit abt gus, but it's not something i've put a lot of thought into. it's also just fuckin hard to articulate outside of just showing it lmao. [i mentioned like, predator/prey animal nervousness + their reactions to fear vs aggression on the other post but to pull one for here: fake pep still has his own brand of Baggage to deal with too--different stuff than peppino's--but fp is way more open about it when it comes up as opposed to peppino having 50 fuckin walls about everything.

besides that, i also see a lot of general banter about gus being a very Nature Guy™ who likes to find beauty in all the weird fucked up shit nature does [especially in a world as cartoony as theirs], which i enjoy a lot bc girl same. fp may be the farthest thing from natural, but i certainly think there is a lot of beauty to be found in his fucked-up-ness. and i'm sure gustavo sees it too.

and then a fun one i've come into pretty recently for them is that they both care abt peppino a lot, but peppino is very bad at...being cared for. so because you can rarely approach pep directly about anything if it involves vulnerability [again: 50 fuckin walls], and because they both know him very well in different ways and can get through to him about different things, they end up working together a lot in sort of a conspiratory way. plotting scheming etc. 'have you noticed anything wrong lately + how are we going to help this guy out today', that sort of thing. the idea there can go a lot of ways but i'm partial to them using like goofy cartoon antics to set him up for something that'll be beneficial to him. [also brick is in on it too technically but brick is a rat and therefore only sapient when it's funny.] peppino rarely realizes what theyre doing until it's too late. get loved idiot

TANGENTIAL. DONT even get me started on the angst oh my god. you. i am pointing at you you made me think about this. i am not usually one who likes doing angst or making things excessively bad for the hell of it but. a bitch may be considering. under cut bc its unrelated to gustavo stuff but this is as good an excuse as any to share. [+ also extra thoughts on it bc of COURSE]

so i said that at the end there but then a few hours later i found myself toying around with a script and getting a good way to set it up.... im hoping i hit a roadblock on it and drop it because if i DO end up getting it all the way written i will definitely end up drawing it at some point and that would be uh... a big undertaking. it would also be one of the last ones i do bc there's other stuff i still want to build on, so IF, i cannot stress enough IF i go to make it a thing for real, it won't be this year.

for the bits i have so far though it's interesting how much it's shaping up to be like. a showcase of just how well peppino knows fp. which is surprisingly well? even better than gus, despite gus' being WAY more emotionally perceptive. peppino doesn't engage with fp more than necessary and rarely acts interested in his business, but i do think he spends a lot of time just... observing him. if only because pep is neurotic and anxious and fp is weird and freaky so it is a constant thing of "ok what the hell is this. is this something i need to be worried about?" whenever fp is doing shit, and the answer is always ''no'', but it's the sort of instinct that never leaves you yknow. so he's just very familiar with all fp's mannerisms and reactions and whatnot, even if he doesn't really use that knowledge much.......except when things go south. he's a lot more perceptive of fp acting 'wrong' or 'off' compared to gus, who would just be seeing it on a more normal 'aw he looked upset' kind of level.

i talk a lot abt fp's nervousness but the other negative thing that's just as strong with him is frustration. it doesn't usually get to him too bad, and he doesn't really show it around people outside of the occasional eyeroll; but it's stuff like not being able to communicate properly with anyone and getting constantly [negatively] misinterpreted; knowing he's Kinda Shite at his "purpose" [i.e. being 'better peppino' or whatever] and not being able to do anything about it [i don't think he cares about that much any more but i imagine it's still gotta be a bit annoying to remember]; not getting closure for like Anything that happened at the tower, etc... and while i DON'T think this would be the kind of thing to make him go berserk [i still don't really have any idea or framing for that lol; the script starts off a couple weeks in the aftermath and i pointedly don't do flashbacks], it's definitely the kind of thing that would get exacerbated by isolation. the kind of thing that's easy to focus on and spiral about without anyone to ground him; the kind of thing that could keep him from thinking clearly and he might just need to Take It Out on something after awhile.

peppino remains a terrible mediator but he is wildly resilient and tenacious, and if you need a guy to slap some sense into you... i mean he can very literally do that, and do it better than just about anyone.

Hahaha okay... completely unrelated but ....I freaking LOVE the power in the Waka Kotahi campaigns, and I mean both the posters and the video ads! they are so impactful, dark, but impactful. They were a fabulous example given in one of our lectures. I appreciate the way different components can come together for example image and text, no mater how simple, to be impactful. This is ultimately and ideally what I'm going to try to achieve. Whatever my media outputs are. ( I say whatever they are... but I do have an idea :) ).

Audience

So basically what I'm wanting to achieve is to raise awareness (hopefully in an effective way) on how coeliac is serious and should be taken seriously. I'm going to attempt at eliminating the sigma and in doing this by targeting a younger audience who are generally more oblivious or simply unaware that coeliac even exists, let alone is actually serious and to be taken with more than just a pinch of salt. young people still have to grow up so there is time for them to learn and pass that knowledge on. the knowledge I put out there will best true and not misinformed and gathered from credible and reliable sources.

on a general scope, I want my audience to be anyone who hasn't heard of coeliac , but primarily, I want my audience to be for young people generation Z who are in uni and pre-uni post-uni young adults who may be unknowingly surrounded by their peers who have coeliac. As a reference point (or a guide if your will) i will be using my three flatmates as a sample of my audience. All three of them fit to the age demographic and knowing absolutely nothing on the topic of coeliac, in fact one of them even said "isn't that like a wheat intolerance thing?". I am going to draw on their lack of knowledge and awareness, essentially guiding my project to present to them, and fulfil the aim to bring a general awareness and understanding on the issues presented with coeliac.

Im not really leaning towards video as my media format, I do enough of that in my film papers and my skills are a bit lacking at this point in my film journey that I don't feel confident venturing down that road just yet, however, there is an amazing coeliac video by Hayley Repton on Vimeo called Glutened and it does a fanatic job at displaying coeliac disease. this short video is "A rhythmic short film which expresses the impact everyday life has on a newly diagnosed coeliac, and how she discovers her own tempo."

Because coeliac is hard to direct visually in a creative way there isn't many media out puts out there like Glutened. I feel that it is way more affective to absorb visual information than written information, especially in regards to health related topics. I'm interested in photography, it is something I enjoy (I'm not much good at it but this might be an opportunity to practice) it might be a matter of approaching this topic in a contemporary way in terms of visual representation of ideas that otherwise have none.

YouTube has some great resources as well! the below videos are informative in a fun way and are done by YouTuber Morgan Mckenzie Moore. Absolutely brilliant and entertaining. I think the content in her "Stop Saying This" video is very relevant and making people aware of some of these things is the first step in changing the stigma and the misunderstandings.

there is also this mini documentary style video on Youtube the was made in association with the NZ Coeliac association and the University of Auckland. it is called Dont Pass the Bread. This is getting personal insight into living with Coeliac

I think I just like the idea that photography or poster campaigns are fast and quick to taken in an this could be more effective that a video that you're needing to know what to search for to even begin, whereas you could be casually walking past a shop window and see a poster on something you may have never thought to look up. I know this has its controversial issues as well, in terms of s seeing something you just didn't want to see but because it was up in a space that is unavailable like a bus stop, you are therefore forced in a way to look at something. anyways...

This has been Pinterest contribution, I like the idea of the poster but again I think there are way to many medical posters out there and while they're great, I want to make something a little more interesting and different. if I make something different, this might spark some interest in the viewer to learn more or simply take away what they learnt in the moment. I like the idea that a poster will have something impactful and fast to say visually but then with a mention or a direction to a follow up to something like a video or a podcast or a news article etc.

Below is a campaign proposal I found on Behance, to be fair this was the only one on coeliac which I guess confirms the point that this is all the more needed.

My moms fight is my fight really stood out to me as this is relatable to my angle and its how I'm positioned to care about coeliac as it is something ive grown up around. I like the idea of simple image combining to make a bigger meaning or announcement. I ended up finding images that I thought were decent enough representations of Coeliac or in relation to that idea... sort of like a mini visual mind Map. Here is a sample...

Below is an article that also mentions the nuisance caused when people can sometimes mistake coeliac for being an allergy, published on the NZ Herald and the article itself is local to the Waikato region as well 'Hamilton News'. Another point to mention as stated in previous post is that coeliac often considered a disability and I know there is some extra help with that. Individuals with celiac disease have different needs at different times in their life. Because of these special needs, specifically in the States, coeliac disease is considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Diagnostic delays and treatment challenges in children with coeliac disease: The New Zealand Coeliac Health Survey.

The purpose of this study was to examine the symptoms, diagnosis delays, and management challenges of Coeliac disease (CD) in children. The study utilized the New Zealand Coeliac Health Survey and focused on children under the age of 16. The results indicated that out of the 123 children with doctor-diagnosed CD, the median age at diagnosis was 4 years, and the median time between symptom onset and diagnosis was 1.5 years.

I found an academic article, Epidemiology of coeliac disease, that provides a review of the latest epidemiological information on coeliac disease globally. The review concentrates mainly on the prevalence of the disease among adults, as there has been a decline in infant cases that has been offset by an increase in cases among older children and adults.

‘It’s not fair that we have to pay a premium’: Woman with coeliac disease reveals struggles of pricey gluten-free food during cost of living crisis. is the name of another website article I found. I also noticed that there seems to be a larger focus on woman with coeliac an it seems to be more common in women and this would be interesting to explore further why that might be the case, even if there is no research done on that. also if there is any importance emphasising the word women in a lot of cases because I know one of the podcasts I explore was the diagnosis story of an Australian man who has coeliac disease. I feel as though this is an imprint point as it could influence who my target audience is, or not, but anyhow, food for thought.

i wish people realized that machine learning and VI, and AI are two completely different things and there is no such thing as an actual artificial intelligence currently in existence

so i am going to try to explain in a way thats easy to digest, bc tech bros have severely muddied the waters

VI means virtual intelligence. these programs that are stealing peoples art and writing and doing racist facial recognition are VIs. They function based on machine learning, which is detecting patterns in masses of data to come to logical, mathematical conclusions. these conclusions build a database of "intelligence" that it is programmed to draw from in order to do whatever it was made to do - like mash together popular art into a soulless image or spit out vaguely comprehensible scripts, etc.

the VI responsible for spitting out these things has absolutely zero understanding of the context or meaning of anything it creates. it does not know what a person is; all it knows is raw basic data and the patterns with which that data is commonly put together

this is not the same as AI

a true AI would be capable of not only learning based on data, as a VI does, but of understanding its meaning. it would not create a poem simply by cataloging data about syntax and themes and subject matter, and spit out an empty recreation of a persons soul; the AI would have a soul of its own. it would catalogue the data and then, as a human brain would, it would come to conclusions and garner meaning from it itself, and then it would create something new from its own perspective with its own critical thinking skills and life experience and opinions and feelings

the difference between a human brain and a computer is, and im simplifying here,top down vs bottom up processing

computers function exclusively on bottom up processing - this means they are given data and they are then able to process it to come to a conclusion

for example; a machine is fed a script for the entirety of the bee movie and, when the prompt "bears" is entered, it spits out a script for a sequel about barry b benson sueing bears for eating honey

now, human beings are capable of top down processing as well - this means we can process a piece of data and then expand on it by linking it to other concepts by running it through the extremely abstract filter of our own personal experience in order to create something new

for example; a person learns that beekeepers play an essential role in maintaining the bee population and promoting pollination. one day they see a vegan extremist post about how eating honey is animal cruelty and should be illegal. the person connects these two concepts and thinks, "what if a bee said that?" they write the script for the bee movie

do you see the vital difference here?

the person took two established pieces of data that are functionally unrelated and created a new concept. they took 1+1 and they ended up with 3

the computer took two established pieces of data and combined them to create a reproduction of the source material, with no new concept

now, could a person do what the computer did? yeah of course, i just demonstrated that. the human brain is capable of both types of processing

however, the computer could not do what the person did

this is the intrinsic difference between VI and AI, and what people misunderstand about self teaching machines and all of this stuff

weve all probably seen the post where a computer figured out how to make a stick figures walk cycle improve through trial and error, right? w the above methods it is reasonable that the computer can mathematically figure out how to make the figure walk better

but the figure will never stop walking and learn to sing

all of these art "AIs" will never be capable of what humans are because they simply do not have the capacity for creativity or independent thought

and until they do they are not AIs

It's 3 am on the 7th day of Ramadan, my tummy finally settling after probably minor food poisoning perfectly timed at the start of fasting, sticking me in bed. Cuz u don't wanna throw up and break your fasting and have a day to redo when u can later. Mr perfect record speaking here, heh

I am in such a, idk, bigger than me moment — just to want to give everyone the biggest hug, in the same time weighed with this tiresome, egging me to leave earth.

How can i give love, more love, while being unable to to do much.. and knowing too little of the common..

I found myself suddenly elevated to a point I thought, "yes, I shouldn't feel ashamed of stating my isolation or justify the happenings of it anymore" I am isolated, socially inept, mentally-everything person who coexist with my guardians because I need them just as much as they need me, no matter how gruelling our relationship is, and how much i care no matter what .. that being said, everything I did to resist that failed. And I am running out of energy year after year..

I've posted to tiktok the first cat I ever see near me, and it frightening how brave it was to just not leave. When I fed it it meowed, and that meow tugged at my heart like when my baby siblings beg for food. I thought to myself, so that's how it feels with pets?

It was my new experience and even tho my body says to run and flinches every time I see it, I try to feed it. Obviously I can't feed it much and if my guardians find out about it they'd chace it away. And realistically we don't have any possibility to tend to the cat anyway

I tried to busy and give myself the joy of having a room that is perfectly red black and a bit of white. So far only this corner gives me the severe visual pleasure of seeing those colors together

But it had to claim its share of being absolutely troubling. For some reason, every red colored item I purchased either turned out to be maroon or simply they sent me a whole different creature of an item, not even close to what they advertise. I've returned so many unrelated shi and maroon colors, that I started to understand Ron's hatred of the color. And it's not a vibrant shade either, it's disgusting murky brown of a red.

And what makes me extra furious is that they don't refund the delivery costs. Why then ship me this??? Does it LOOK like the picture? It's ORANGE with different patterns!

I was especially frustrated because it would have been a match made in heaven with my rug

Now I feel absolutely helpless. I can't run more risks if they keep sucking on the delivery charge, and buying it internationally, I would just pay hundreds for shipping for worthless room shi, and asking my guardians is futile cuz they either will take 60 years to do it or just say "oh you expect me to go searching for you in this state? Beside its a small town so dont expect mcuh".. so idk what to do

For the time being, im absolutely burned out of doing art, my life line. I missed sorly how I used to draw Sev, retouched one I loved dearly nd the Harry one too, now I'm aching to illustrate the HP books AND tintin now x'c

Im curious as to why you hate Makoto for ripping of p3pfemc's looks but consent to Royal-chan for the same thing? ( I know you hate Makoto for a lot of other reasons, like her personality and such, but it seemed like you disliked her since prereveal/release?) If Royal chan ended up being a completely unrelated character to femc, will your opinion of her change ? (no hate really, i jst wanna know. \V/m )

It's no prob! In all honesty I didn't even think about this kind of question, but the answer came right away, so I guess time for a not so deep reflection.

So like full stop, if Poniko isn't connected to the FeMC and it's just Atlus messing with me, yeah I'mma be PISSED. Will I rip on her looks like no tomorrow? Maybe, depends on how it’s handled (like how bad they burn me, and even then I might wait for a spinoff cause they might go into the connection there rather than Royal). I think it's obvious I went harder on Makoto because I don't like her for other reasons, and so any small thing about her annoys me (tbh Yusuke's design annoys me too, but not as bad cause....I kinda just don’t care about him and who he’s copying as much, but I'll get to that in a bit)

Anyway I think we need some historical context, because I think it’s important. When Makoto (and Yusuke) where first shown......FeMC had been ignored for A LONG time. We had a non-canon play (which no one really talked about), and that was it. No game related stuff, not even featured in the game where people were getting ripped out of timelines. FeMC were BURNED. I’ll be honest, when Yusuke appeared......While the parallels between P2 were obvious (not just with him) he reminded me of Minato as well. It annoyed me we had to have the token blue hair character since the rule had been made since the P3 era (kinda enforced with some black haired characters from P1/2, combining P2 games together that is, if you want to include them), Atlus said they’d be trying new things..... but like....whateves. But my association with him as Minato increased....when Makoto came along. 

Ngl I wasn’t pleased with the reveal of the last three girls (even didn’t like Haru, for ironically now what I love as an alt rewrite for her as, as I thought she’d be a mean and person full of herself due to calling herself ‘beauty thief’....Yeah all types of crazy here, I do love sweet Haru tho. And the reason for my opinion changing on the alt non-canon personality rewrite is just I.....see the appeal in it for the group dynamic now, while at the time I was afraid of disliking any of the characters or having them be disliked by the fandom.....which big laugh now haha :’D .....I want my happy P5 self back ;w;). Anyway back to the three girls, ngl one of the reasons I wasn’t happy was how they just dumped 3 more characters on us (too big a cast so can they handle it?, silly has to do more VA videos, I want the smaller cast back oh god don’t screw this up, and so on and so on). As for the characters, while Haru’s appearance in the trailer mislead me on her personality (for whatever reason)..... I just.....there was something about Futaba and Makoto I didn’t like. Futaba just rubs me all the wrong ways for reasons I can’t describe for back then (maybe the fact she looked like she’d be a troll and she kinda is), but Makoto it was clear...... She was ripping off FeMC’s look. The brown hair and red eyes.....the fact that Yusuke looked like Minato.....it felt like they were trying to draw them as expies of the P3MCs. And it pissed me off. I didn’t want an unrelated character look and remind me of the FeMC, I wanted FeMC herself! Why are you stealing her look????? And while some FeMC saw this and rolled with it as a joke (Hamu/Minty/Shin dressing up as Makoto/Yusuke/Goro to get into P5), other’s didn’t know who the FeMC was and thus.....didn’t see the blatant expy/rip off design. Seeing people be like “her character design is so original and cute and blah blah blah”.....it annoyed me....obviously (it didn’t help she grew in popularity doing absolutely nothing too, so initially it was all about her looks, and then I’ve been told a lot of her fans, at least male, has been mostly them saying the like her design and her hair and her eyes, and no everyone who likes Makoto is an FeMC fan so....yeah.....I mostly hear how it’s just about her design so I’m very focused on that in regards to her specifically BECAUSE of the fans). And yeah I know it was a bit petty/shallow reason, but I didn’t outright hate her atm, she was stepping on my toes badly but I was holding out till the game (where it finally cemented my hate for her, and now I legit hate her for petty, shallow, deep, and complex reasons). And lordy lord lord, it did not help Makoto’s name was Makoto, because that was a name some FeMC fans gave Hamuko (cause Makoto Yuki was the closest ‘canon’ name we’d get to P3MCs, and some people adopted it for both MCs cause it was gender neutral, so Niijima coming along and taking THAT away sucked ass, and I know different kanji, it still sucked tho). It just....felt like Atlus was spitting in FeMC fan’s face..... But anyway, I kept it in....for about....2ish years. Even when I was trying to stay positive.......and even when I was slowly starting to come out with negative opinions. I tried to keep it in. 

Finally I decided to make it framed as a joke, because I started to see Makoto ripping off more characters than just FeMC (FeMC, Aika, and Naoto in the detective novel to be precise, but what got the ball rolling was realizing that it was Aika who Makoto ripped the hair and motor vehicle from with the FeMC’s color scheme). That’s where my brain started going other places than just being restricted to FeMC, and I started being more critical of Makoto’s design outside the FeMC (tho that still burned me). Because, imo, it’s not original, it annoyed me people would say she was original when she was really just a Frankenstein rip off of other characters (other loved characters, FeMC and Aika were pretty popular in their own right). It only continued to cement in my mind that....anything ‘original’ about Makoto was a farce, she just copies while the original gets left behind.

Tldr; FeMC had been snubbed for years, along comes two design expies that remind you of P3MCs (3 if you wanna include Goro/Ken but Goro looks different enough imo), Makoto is named Makoto (a name some used for FeMC), and Makoto is praised for her design for being original and blah blah blah when it’s not (for multiple reasons besides the FeMC, kinda more the fans reactions fault but I was already having design issues so it just bugged me more when they’d say these things). So yeah it felt like Makoto stole aspects of the FeMC, and it’s not like FeMC has a lot for herself, which really just stepped on my toes. Combined that with legit hating the character when I finally get to see her in action (and it’s because of her actions and writing that I hate-hate the character, but prior to that it was just her stepping on my toes while trying to keep an open mind into liking her), the stuff said before gets amplified more than before.

But months later, after the first post of me ripping on Makoto for taking FeMC and Aika’s design (tho my later posts were in drafts I just didn’t post them till later), something amazing happened on Aug 4th. FeMC finally came back to us. And holy shit obviously I was happy, but it doesn’t dismiss the fact I was aware of how much of design rip off/expy Makoto was, and it wasn’t just FeMC anymore. But gdi if the fact that the FeMC wasn’t being ignored anymore didn’t change the outlook for me as an FeMC fan. FeMC was back, she’s loved, care was put into her character in PQ2, just.....skdfalf;a so happy ;w; But also so hopeful, she was acknowledged again, she had been cut from the 20th anniversary event in official art, and that hurt us, but now she’s back back. And she was a main character in PQ2.....which leads to you questioning, what next? 

Which brings us to Poniko, the one post hopeful outlook. Obviously she’s not starting in the same place as Makoto. Poniko has been revealed post-PQ2 FeMC....which means Atlus isn’t ignoring Hamuko (in fact a lot of the creators were stating they WANTED her back), we know the creators do love Hamuko. There’s also the fact.....Poniko looks less like an expy like Makoto (who imo looks like Soejima trying to emulate Kaneko’s art style, esp the eye shape, same with Yusuke too). Poniko? It goes beyond ripping off a design, she looks like she’s almost fully lifted from Hamuko, it just looks like Hamuko wearing a different outfit. Just straight up copy and paste. And would I have been pissed if she was revealed alongside Makoto? Maybe, or I might be theorizing that she is Hamuko herself like now (tho I think it’d get more push back due to Hamu being in Atlus’ basement for so long so it just being claimed as delusional and unlikely), or both (and then pissed when it’s revealed it’s not Hamuko). It’s just....she looks SO MUCH like Hamuko it can’t be a coincidence, and after PQ2 it feels less like one as well. Just.....the posture, the cinematic parallels, the hair color, the eye color, the eye shape, the eyelashes, the face structure, the way she stands.....Poniko just screams “I AM Hamuko” not “I just look like her because.” And it helps that other people in the fandom also see this too, some are hoping she’s a new person, but it seems people at least acknowledge that very obvious similarities between Hamuko and Poniko (while that didn’t really happen with P5 with Hamuko/Makoto). 

And....tbh I feel like I might sound like I’m splitting hairs (at least with the words I’m using). And it might sound weird that I think Makoto ripped off enough Hamuko it pissed me off, but Poniko just.....is a copy and paste of Hamuko, just straight up Hamuko in a different outfit and hairstyle but it doesn’t. But it’s the historical context I think that sheds that light. And the fact Poniko might just BE Hamuko, and so it’d make sense if that was the case for them to look like each other (while it doesn’t make sense for Makoto to look like Poniko). 

I guess it also helps that I personally had the headcanon Hamuko and Minato weren’t related (just strangers on the bridge in two separate cars), and they both survived the bridge accident but one became the leader of SEES and the other went on to live and do their own thing (until maybe a spinoff game pulls them back in). And while I.....well recalling it now I considered a reincarnation once in a hc scenario (opted for time travel forward cause that makes sense 8U I won’t go into it I had my reasons 8U), but looking at the 1st year symbol on Poniko (and reincarnation in other MegaTen works, I mean c’mon reincarnation is in the title) it feels plausible. And it works for Poniko because of the time the incident and the time to be reincarnated takes place (1999 being the accident and April 1 2000-April 2 2001 being the time frame she was born), which wouldn’t ever work for Makoto because she was born in 1998 (so even if I HAD considered Makoto it wouldn’t have worked, esp since they never tell us she jumped grades, it’s not possible....and while I’m all for hc and grey areas, this is something that WOULD be explicitly told because it’s not common in Japan and Atlus has been explicit about characters not in the ‘right’ grades before, just an fyi there 8U). 

I dunno I feel like there’s distinct clear reasons that I can fit them into separate categories. And yeah if Poniko isn’t Hamuko I’mma be burned too, BUT I’mma wait till a spinoff post-Royal before I get pissy.....cause I don’t expect clear answers to other past games in another game’s mainline entry (I only expect shallow shoutouts tbh). So yeah, just so you know where the deadline for my expectations are.

im in the mood for an abemiha meta so im going to talk about the language use in oofuri! and by language use i mean the use of the word “like” (suki/好き/スキ)

im putting it under the cut since i gotta include some images. beware of minor manga spoilers! really, really minor though lol

first i’m going to provide an explanation of terms and stuff, and their connotations (info is from jisho.org and wordreference. i am still just a beginner in japanese but i am fairly confident in these explanations!)

a lot of you may know this but japanese has three systems of writing, which is going to be very important for my discussion! these are broken down into hiragana and katakana (referred to together as “kana”, symbols are syllabic) and kanji (written characters that represent a word/phrase) you can express japanese in writing in kana alone, but its way more common to use kanji along with kana in writing. this will be really important to my discussion, as i will be highlighting the distinction between katakana usage and kanji usage of the word “suki” 

suki, written “好き” in kanji and “スキ” in katakana, is defined as: “liking; fondness; love” which can be a little confusing - the distinction between “liking” something and “loving” something isn’t quite available, so that typically necessitates context. but with written language, especially in a language with three entirely different writing systems, i think it is safe to say there are other ways of constructing that distinction.

(i can hear a distant “but gabby what about DAISUKI!!! isn’t that MORE about love?” yes and no! ive addressed this in an earlier post but in general the word “suki” is considered to be more serious and romantic, while “daisuki” is a bit more.. uh.. “extra” and frivolous)

so why would an author choose to use kana (in this particular case katakana) in place of kanji?

the kanji is difficult/obscure (gonna just say that “好” doesnt seem particularly difficult at all - it is taught in grade 4)

the author wants to stress sound of the word/emphasize the word (this is important for my interests lol)

a stylistic choice

(i picked up this info a bit from japanese language forums & from translating stuff so it might not be completely accurate but! i think this sums it up)

now that that is out of the way im going to make my bold ass claim! that in the text of oofuri (or just in mihashi speak), スキ is love, and 好き is like! i will now try to show u how i came to this very very bold conclusion:

the first instance we see of “suki” being used in the manga is when abe tells mihashi he likes him as a pitcher (bottem left bubble is “i like it”) 

which is followed up by this panel:

in sequential panels, we have two different spellings of “suki”. it is made clear from the very first chapter in the manga, that (esp for mihashi) that kana “suki” and kanji “suki” have different, important implications. it seems here that mihashi is bewildered that abe would say anything like “like” to him, and writing suki as スキ only drives this home further, almost as if “like” was in bold or italicized

now this is just the first instance and only proves that katakana can be used as a tool to emphasize something, or that maybe mihashi doesn’t know the kanji for suki, or that this is how “suki” is translated to mihashi speak - but it can also set us up to look out for this distinction in the future. I’ll get to the confession scene last my dudes just hold on a minute lol 

now the “this is the mihashi version of suki” theory could work if not for the fact that we have at least 2 instances of mihashi using 好き:

the first when he says he likes the big carrot chunks in the curry: 

and again when he asks abe if he likes catching (i’ll say more on this in a bit):

so if mihashi didnt just learn 好き (its fair to say he always knew since hes not like illiterate dgfdg) then in this instance, “suki” doesn’t have any particular emphasis -- ie mihashi is saying “like” here

setting aside mihashis fondness for carrots is the question he asks abe which is “you like being a catcher, huh?” to which abe emphatically replies: 

this is followed by mihashis conclusion, where we see the shift back to スキ:

“i see. i like pitching. and abe likes catching”  (mihashi uses スキ elsewhere when he talks about his feelings towards pitching; we can pretty much assume that he loves it. thats like his whole character) mihashi wasnt sure how much abe liked catching, and after hearing abe’s response, shifts 好き to スキ. it is subtle, but it means a lot! abe likes/loves catching as much as mihashi likes/loves pitching! there wasnt really a need for clarification on the reader’s part here - we can get what abe is saying right away, but mihashi must confirm it for himself and re-confirm to the reader that “スキ” has a special meaning in this manga/to mihashi

moving on!!!!!! just to solidify, i want to show a couple more instances where スキ shows up:

here, in the word for crush: (the word crush is lit. “person you like” - interestingly, while “person”(人) is in kanji, “suki” is written in katakana)

ofc this could just be because this is handwritten, and it is easier to read handwritten kana, so perhaps it is this way for clarity (人 has 2 strokes so its not an issue, but 好 has 6 so its just a bit more complicated) BUT higuchi. (unfortunately for amateurs like me who try to translate her work) really is not opposed to handwriting more complicated kanji in her manga. i also haven’t looked hard enough but perhaps there is an instance where 好き is handwritten. dont know though!

and here, unrelated to abe and mihashi, when suzune is telling her boyfriend  ookawa that she loves him (its blue cuz its an omake on the cover thats just how it is)

again, it is handwritten, but also this scene seems to rely on the emphasis provided by the katakana

and now. drumroll. im finally focking ready to talk about the confessoin scene! i have talked about how it can be read as a “confession” in this post, but i think it is definitely worth bringing up again bc it is my focking point!

maybe u already guessed (or read my other post) but when abe and mihashi tell each other they like each other it is with スキ:

am i trying to imply theyre in love already? yes and no! i think that スキ here is meant to draw our eyes to the word so we remember it well, or maybe give us a hint of what’s to come in the story (like a real confession scene between them) the two of them are very naive and dont know each other well in the beginning, but it is clear higuchi wants us to pay attention to this word and ask ourselves why it might be written in this way, and how this writing can kind of make the meaning of “suki” ambiguous 

(as an aside id like to note how in the panels above, the phrase “i like you” is isolated from the rest of the sentence. as u probably know abe’s full phrase is “not just as a pitcher, i like you as a person, too!” bc of the way japanese grammar works, though, abe’s “i like you” clause out of context can work as its own sentence; and higuchi chose to give it its own bubble. mihashis “i like you” is even isolated from his “me too!” which i think is interesting. mihashis flashback later in the manga to abe’s “i like you” is segmented in exactly the same way)

also in this scene is where mihashi says he loves being a pitcher w/ スキ:

so if we add the layer that this scene is from mihashis perspective he may very well be meaning “love” in this scene, and may have even interpreted abe’s words in that way (again at the beginning we already see mihashi interpreting abe’s 好き as スキ, so perhaps he is doing it again - though it is left unclear on purpose)

make of this what you will - i could be just picking up on unimportant things. after all, “suki” absolutely isn’t the only word that is emphasized/ kana in the manga, so perhaps this is just a coincidence. but i think it is pretty significant that it is fairly consistent of a distinction in the manga, for such a loaded word, and i honestly suspect this isn’t going to be the last we see of it.
