i get so frustrated bc like… the point of Smile 2 (bc i do understand this criticism of the first one) it’s not to just say like…. ‘oh and everyone who’s mentally ill is bad and evil and gross and hurts themselves and ppl around them and its hopeless the end’ like NOO you missed the point.

When you’re depressed or hallucinating or going through something insanely stressful, it can make you lash out, or make you impulsive and sad and scared, or push away the ppl who surround you. And it can make you feel like the world is laughing at you.

And it’s not Skye’s fault, it’s not happening to her because she’s a terrible person! And the movie isn’t trying to say that it is happening to her because she is a terrible person. But the ‘monster’ that lives in her head tries to tell her that, and tries to get her to believe it.

And the sad thing is that to a point, she does everything right! She reaches out, and she asks for help, and she tries to talk to someone about what’s happening. But there’s no one in her corner, and no support system she can rely on, and no one responds until it’s too late. And it’s sad. And it’s scary. And it’s a tragedy.

And that’s the point, I think. Does that make sense?

I’ve been seeing some fics/ideas both on AO3 and on here where Chloe is in an abusive/toxic relationship and Red saves her from it. No hate to those bloggers/writers (I’ve read one on AO3 and bookmarked it immediately cuz it was so good) but it seems extremely out of character for Chloe to ever be with someone who would mistreat her.

From what we’ve seen in the movie, Chloe doesn’t hesitate to fight against someone she believes has done her wrong, and she’s clearly strong enough to fight back so there’s no way she’d let someone overpower her. Plus, her parents literally have the most perfect love story ever, she knows what pure romantic love is supposed to look like, and she would back away as soon as she realizes that it wasn’t the perfect picture her parents are.

So, I suggest, instead of making Chloe the helpless maiden, let Red be.

Red has been sheltered since the day she was born, and she has absolutely no idea what love is or how it’s given or received. Any idea of love she has is from her mother, who, evidently, manipulated her and emotionally abused her. She’s seen to want love, so it makes sense that if it came in the form of pain, she wouldn’t know how to react to that because she’s finally loved, even if it’s not ideal.

Chloe, being the charming knight she is, would swoop in and save Red from whatever misery she put herself in to just be happy for once.

And then they live happily ever after.

I feel like people underestimate Ballister's actions in the movie and dumb him down to be just a guy with sad big eyes when he's literally a metaphor for transphobic gay men who participated in the system based on violence and hate. "oliver didn't love felix he just wanted to be him" NO. oliver loved felix. oliver loved him so much that he was willing to mold himself to be whatever felix wanted him to be. he played the part of a poor boy with a shitty home life so that felix would pity him and love him and take him in like a stray dog. felix found out his lie and was going to throw him away like he was nothing, and oliver couldn't handle the thought of not having felix so he killed him. that way, he could perserve the memory of felix loving him and caring for him in his memory for the rest of his life.

oliver quick loved felix catton so much that he killed him so that their relationship would remain unharmed for all of the years to come. so that he could live with the delusion that felix died loving him, forgiving him for lying.

I… I don’t… did you WATCH his other films? Because it feels like we didn’t watch the same films.

Like yeah- some of them are plot heavy and meant to be easily followed, and some of them… drift. Are more metaphor and dream than any real plot. That’s how Miyazaki BE sometimes.

As for “cobbled together”- the man was making a “last film.” (lol- he will be until he finally passes, the man cannot retire, but beside the point) He was using the best ideas he had from all his other films to make something new. It was like connecting all his previous themes into one magnus opus. It made me cry. Also, how did you miss the BRAND NEW ART TECNIQUE he used in every horror scene???!!! It was breath taking. Litterally. I had to remind myself to breathe after the first fire scene. How did that not shock you? How were you not entirely entranced?

As for wierd gross things… again, did we watch the same films? Did you forget Noface? Or Bird Howl? Or the Demon Poison in Princess Mononoke? Miyazaki LOVES gross things. Part of his genius is how gross and weird they ARE. Even when he is charming, he is off puttingly weird- or do we not remember Ponyo’s transformations?

Like- who exactly did you come to see? Because I’m not sure you came to watch Miyazaki. 🤨

watched the new ghibli last night (the boy and the heron) and it was a disappointment honestly. very aimless, the plot barely made sense, and im 90% sure it was cobbled together out of unused assets from previous films. like actually

I did know both those things! Horrible stuff. This isn't exactly related but I never understood when people think 'asylum horror' is about the patients because to me its always been about the insane horror of experimental medicine and malpractice and the people subjected to it, how they were treated.

i absolutely hate the theory that ella did the prank. its so out of character for ella, and it misses the whole point of their friendship and it just feels.. so shallow? bridget can still feel betrayed without ella having to pull that. and its clear from the movie that bridget felt that way because she felt like she was abandoned by ella in a time when she needed her the most
