Fun Facts about Invader Zim for those of you who weren’t in the fandom in the early days.

Originally ‘Membrane’ was supposed to be Dib’s dad’s first name and the family was supposed to have no last name al la Arnold from Hey Arnold! or Dexter from Dexter’s Lab. This is why in Dib’s Wonderful Life of Doom he’s called Dib “Whateveryourlastnameis”. The fandom however, overwhelmingly assumed ‘Membrane’ was a surname and referred to the characters as such but it didn’t become canon until the comics came out.

On the Nicktoons message boards, Zim fanfics were called ‘Zim Zodes’. I have no idea why we called them that. Maybe it was like ‘ode’ with a ‘z’ or short for ‘episodes’ with a ‘z’.

Since it was a site meant for young children, posts had to be previewed by the board moderator before they went live. Aside from not publishing anything that might be inappropriate for children, the mod for the Zim board had a policy of not publishing fanfics which were off brand or OoC. Specifically, they didn’t allow fanfics which introduced new characters to be romantic interests for the canon characters aka Mary-Sues.

I still tried and failed to post one anyway.

Nick.com usernames could only be 10 characters long. This was the exact number of characters needed for most Zim board members to make their usernames InvaderXYZ.

People spread, and to this day continue to proliferate, completely made-up bullshit about Nick execs censoring Jhonen or being a pain to work with or Jhonen hating his fans and resenting his creation.

A lot of things said in jest are also passed around as fact. In fact, I believe if you go to TVTropes right now you can find an entry on one of the pages claiming that Jhonen intended to kill off Dib in Bad, Bad Rubber Piggy and replace him with a character named Louie. I didn’t learn until my mid twenties that the source for this was the DVD commentary. If Jhonen’s tone alone wasn’t enough to make it apparent that this was said in jest, Richard Horvitz telling Andy Berman to his face that the reason Jhonen wanted to do it was because he hated him and wanted to fire him should’ve made it obvious to anyone with half a brain cell that they were making the whole thing up on the spot.

TVTropes also claims Andy Berman was going to voice Zim if Richard hadn’t become available after Angry Beavers was cancelled since they couldn’t find anybody Jhonen liked after rejecting Billy West and Mark Hamill. Once again, the source is Richard Horvitz on the DVD commentary playfully dunking on Andy. Jhonen chose Andy and Melissa for their roles because he wanted actors who naturally sounded like a little boy and girl respectively rather than having someone like Tara Strong doing a voice. Likewise, he said he wanted someone with a naturally strange voice for Zim, prompting Richard’s quip about having Andy do it. 

It’s less obvious how much of this is true and how much is sarcasm, but Jhonen claims he promised his friend Rikki Simons he could voice a character on the show and Rikki claimed GIR immediately upon seeing the character design, but Jhonen wanted someone who wasn’t a professional actor who could give an authentically rough performance anyway, so it worked out perfectly.

_A_R/F stands for “X and Y romance/relationship/friendship. I’ve heard the reason we did this was because most of the main character’s names were too short to combine and names like Zib or Dim or Zig could easily be fan character names, but I wasn’t the one who started it so IDK. It wasn’t a perfect system since there were two major characters whose names both started with ‘G’ but damned if we weren’t committed to it.

The VR sequence in Door to Door had to be changed at the last minute because it showed the Statue of Liberty in a dystopian future shortly after 9/11. They got the new sequence completed in time for air, but someone at the network screwed up and aired the original version the first time the episode debuted anyway. I caught that broadcast.
