Not A Book Friday
Apparently this movie was actually based on two books by Diane Mott Davidson, Catering for Nobody and Dying for Chocolate. Both books in the Goldy Bear Culinary Mystery series.
In the movie (and the book) Goldy Berry is a caterer, who, when one of her friends dies, finds herself on the case at first because she sees something that the lead detective, Tom Schultz, doesn’t see it (it’s food related, so, it does make sense). And then, she gets bitten by the amateur detective bug, and has to see the case through.
One big difference between this movie and the book is that while it’s based on the books, they have taken the husband character down to a much nicer level. He and Goldy aren’t always best friends in the movie, but, he's not in any way the same sort of character as in the book. Not surprising since while this is a mystery movie, it’s still a Hallmark mystery movie.

Got a free trial to Hallmark to watch The Curious Caterer which is based upon Diane Mott Davidson’s Goldy Shultz novels and boy was it bad, Goldy’s espresso habit and the Rocky Mountain setting were both taken out and also Goldy was played by an ex model, she should be sort and fat since she’s a chef for goodness sake.

Special Guest - Jackie Layton - Author of The Con: An Organized Crime Cozy Mystery - #AuthorInterview / #Giveaway Great Escapes Book Tour - @jackielaytonauthor
The Con: An Organized Crime Cozy Mystery by Jackie Layton I am happy to welcome Jackie Layton to Escape With Dollycas today! Hi Jackie, Please tell us a little bit about yourself. I’m a wife, a mother, and a Gigi. I live on the coast of South Carolina, and we love living here. I’ve been a reader as long as I can remember, and I feel so blessed to be published. What is the first book you remember reading? The Best Loved Doll is the book I read over and over. I checked it out of the library so many times that my mother finally bought the book for me. What are you reading now? I’m reading The Confidence Game by Maria Konnikova. What books have most inspired you? When I discovered Catering to Nobody by Diane Mott Davidson I became a huge fan. I was so excited to discover her mysteries, and I was hooked. What made you decide you wanted to write mysteries? I like the pace, the friendships, the settings, and solving the mystery. It makes you think, and it’s fun. Do you have a special place where you like to write? I have an office in my house, and I love to go in there and get lost in the writing process. Where do the ideas for your books come from? Ideas come from everywhere. I watch the news, Dateline, and American Greed. I pay attention to what’s happening in the world around me, and I use my imagination. Is there anything about writing you find most challenging? I want to write good stories, but I especially want the first chapter to pull readers into the story. What do you think makes a good story? Good characters, plot twists, and a satisfying resolution to the mystery. Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you? I’m going to say Kate Sloan. We’re both empty nesters, we both have sons, and we both love our families. What makes your books different from others out there in this genre? My stories feature spunky southern heroines who are amateur sleuths and risk a lot to fight for justice for the victims. What’s next on the horizon for you? I have two more cozy mysteries that will be published in 2025. One is Bleeding Heart Librarian, and it’s the third book in A Texas Flower Farmer Cozy Mystery Series. Also, Leave It to Bess, the third book in An Organized Crime Cozy Mystery Series will be released. I also plan to attend Malice Domestic. It’s a great way to meet readers and spend time with other authors. Thank you for interviewing me, Lori! Thank you Jackie for visiting today! ____ Please keep reading for more info about Jackie and her new book, The Con. More About Jackie Layton Jackie Layton is the author of cozy mysteries with Spunky Southern Sleuths. Her stories are set in Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina. She lives on the coast of South Carolina, where she enjoys walks on the beach and golf cart rides around the marsh. Reading, gardening, and traveling are some of her favorite hobbies. Jackie always keeps a notebook handy to write down ideas for future stories. Dateline and American Greed are two ways she gets ideas. Curious Caterer Mysteries - Foiled Plans
Hallmark Mystery - 2024
Here's the short blurb for the episode: "Goldy Berry's Medieval feast at Hyde Castle gets interrupted by a murder. She teams up with Detective Shultz to solve the mystery before the murderer strikes again."
I'm a fan of the book series by Diane Mott Davidson. Goldy Bear was a caterer in Colorado with a business called Goldilocks Catering, Where Everything is Just Right. The books were well written and fun. I lived about an hour out of town and listened to the audio books on the way to and from work. I finished the entire series, 17 books I think. It was a bummer when the author retired. The character stumbled on murders like other culinary mystery characters, she was smart, nice, talented, curious, and helpful. Very likable lady. The books also gave recipes from her jobs. I still have one for a breakfast casserole that's sooo good. The author worked with a chef so the food was real.
This last episode has me steaming. I know things change when a book is made into a movie or series but sheese, this has turned out bad. The plot was ok, not too far off from Sticks and Scones (book 10). My issue is how Goldy has turned into an unlikeable person. As the show went on she became more snarky and downright self-righteous. Unlike the book character this Goldy didn't help so much as ratchet things up to a 10 and then act surprised when people were hurt. Tom, the detective, was more like a dufus that took his que from her. He never once told her to stay out of it, the cop always says that. He was better than this in the first 3 movies. What or who changed? I can't recommend this one to anyone who liked the books or even the first 3 movies. Hallmark plans more Curious Caterer movies and I hope the writers remember who Goldy really is, Tom too.

Excerpt:
It wasn’t life that flashed before my eyes as Betty Fae thwacked me between the shoulder blades. It was death and disaster—replays of all the faces of shock and sadness worn by acquaintances of my past. Death of one sort or the other followed that stupid Raven.
I remembered them all. Vividly. The writer, the homeschool mom, the surfer, the politician. They were among the near-strangers I’d encountered and endangered.
Following their faces came the really painful pictures. The friendly child advocate, the sweet boy next door, and losing my aunt and uncle. After them, but always above them, followed the loss of my sister and father.
All because of the same intolerable bird. Gracious enough to give me a glimpse of their perils before nudging them to the brink. Impending doom sat, staring at me, from the cup of the only friend I had in town- Janice Rockland. It lingered there amid the froth bubbles, telling me Janice Rockland had twenty-four hours, at most, left to live.
My eyes watered. My throat closed all the tighter. Even after it dislodged my Belgian waffle. Air battled past my suffocating emotions. I gulped it down, despising myself and fearing for my boss.
Janice and Betty Fae offered me a glass of water and napkins, thinking they’d saved the day. Little did they know. Trouble had just landed in their small town.
Janice watched me through the rest of the meal. If I told her she was about to die, would she be able to eat? I sipped my coffee and avoided conversation.
Long ago, I’d explained my weird glimpses to one of the Raven’s victims. Instead of believing me, my friend grew increasingly sarcastic about my confession. He mocked me. I didn’t blame him. I’m not sure I would’ve believed me, either. In the end, his sarcasm killed him. Laughing and gesturing like a mad bird to make fun of my premonitions, he’d lost control of his bicycle and collided with a garbage truck just as it was lowering its load.
No, I wasn’t about to tell Janice about her Raven. I’d keep watch. Stay sharp. Once the bird made an appearance, he wouldn’t leave until his prey was dead. Accidentally or with malice aforethought.
The next song, movie quote, television commercial, or anything ominous could clue me in on how to save her. At least I could give it a shot. If I didn’t keep a constant eye on Janice, her death would be on my head.
About the Author:
Sarah lives in California, in a home that brings her happiness and hay fever. She loves God, loves her family, and loves freshly brewed coffee. She has a husband who cooks, a son who stop animates, a daughter who loves animals, a dog that follows her everywhere, and a turtle who scowls at her condescendingly.
Her mother raised her on Mary Higgins Clark, Diane Mott Davidson, and Remington Steele. Her grandmother shared True Crime stories with her as they plotted how to get away with the perfect murder. It's no surprise that Sarah became an award-winning spinner of suspenseful tales brimming with quirky characters. Mysteries are in her blood. Not that she could survive one of her own stories. She confesses, "I'd be snuffed out by chapter two."

OH MAN you guys I just realized, I’m going camping tomorrow, that means
NEW DIANE MOTT DAVIDSON BOOK.
She writes super corny, fun, ridiculous murder mysteries themed on food (the protagonist is a caterer) and I only ever allow myself to read them when I go camping, since that’s where I discovered them.
There are seventeen of them and I started with book two; I’m now on book four, THE LAST SUPPERS, and all I know about it is that she’s supposedly getting married in it. (I’m saving book one for last.)
I’m gonna make a fire with doritos and go hiking and read a murder mystery and cook freeze-dried spaghetti on my new camp stove!

Day 24 of 31: Seasonal Books
Day 24 of 31: Seasonal Books
Source There is something comforting about being able to pick up a book or series and know you can be transported to a season or holiday that suits your current reading mood. Too hot and sweaty in mid-August? Pick up a winter story and transport yourself to snow and eggnog. Freezing in January, sick of celebrations and need to be transported to the beach, pick up a July Fourth book about picnics…

Mystery/Thriller Monday
Doesn’t catering a wake for your son’s teacher get everyone into being a private detective? No? Huh… wait, does that mean that hanging around tar pits won’t make you a forensic anthropologist either. Darn, tar is hard to get out of clothes. (Also, I know, Archeology, shhhh… 🤫)
Her foray into detective work may also have something to do with the fact that Tom Schulz, who’s on the case thinks that she did the murder at the wake because it was her ex father-in-law and there’s rat poison found in her food.
So, to make sure that she gets to keep her business, she’s on the case. And, it goes in all the twisty and turny ways that an ameature sleuth novel usually goes, just, with many more delicious foods in it. Yumm….
I have to admit, while the mystery was interesting, the food was my main draw (see: Sarah Graves’ newest series). So much yumm… mmm…

Kinda funny how Diane Mott Davidson is held up as the blueprint for fluffy pointless cosy mysteries when her books touch on some real truths and deep issues. And by funny, I mean pretty typical of media made by and enjoyed by women.

16 Lighthearted, Cozy Mystery Books to Settle Down With This Fall
[via Popsugar]
Unlike horror, thrillers, or true-crime novels, cozy mysteries don't get into the bloody gore of murder or the violent actions of hardened criminals or sociopaths. They are as delightful as they sound: lighthearted, comical mysteries that will draw you in without raising your heart rate. Instead, it's usually based in a small town, where an amateur detective personally knows all the suspects, keeping you guessing as you wade through the charm.

Books- You've been asked already about books you love, but what's the worst book you've ever read? Did you finish it?
There was this book from a series about this chef that also solved mysteries on the side. I’ve liked some of the books we’ve had in the past, but this one wouldn’t. stop. describing. the castle they were visiting in this book every. time. My mother kept telling me it had a reason and it would pay off but I never did finish it. PLEASE stop going into every detail about that room. We’ve done that like five times already and I now hate that room. I no longer care about your client and just want the book to be about that one kid that works for you or just more time with you and your husband that may or may not have been attacked it has been too long since I read it but I know that man spent too long on moving that castle over from England and I hope it turns to ash.
Looks like it was Sticks & Scones by Diane Mott Davidson. I just wanted the story to move on. They were fun little stories and whatever she was making in the book had real recipes inside. Had to drop this one
