Things I like about it: fun character design and premise, I like the whole dueling thing, and I really like the main group’s sense of style, as an ensemble and individually. (Karta's personal style goes hard.) I really like the interpretations of the veil between dreams and reality and the scenes that take place in the in-between world as well as Karta’s visions. I also like the colors a lot, the way that light and highlights are done feels really shiny and dreamlike.

I think my biggest issue is that it feels like it was trying to be a boarding school drama, a magical coming of age, and a romance, and I don't think it devoted nearly enough energy to fleshing out every aspect of the plot. There's not that much originality in the magic world (though I do like the maiden mother crone thing) and there's not that much thought given to character development outside of Karta and Bailey; it kind of feels like the creator bit off more than they can chew. Even Karta, though she's fun, I think has a lot to be explored about her self image, identity, and goals, which are kind of brushed off to make her seem relatably aimless, rather than actually showing her path of figuring out who she wants to be. I would also further that to say, thematically, it's not clear what the endgame is. If it's about choosing your own path and disconnecting from your origins and family, then why is there so much effort on the training to be a proper witch; if it's about figuring out who you want to be, then why is there more emphasis placed on romance than personal growth… etc. (In general I would say that the drama centers too much on romance, especially considering the potential to expand on identity or belief systems or politics in a magical setting.) Like I said, I think it just comes down to trying to do too much at once and not getting your plot in order before starting.

The points this one did get, in my book, were 2) evidence of worldbuilding, 4) fun pacing, 5), building themes, 6) character depth and nuance, 8) dialogue nuances, 12) racial diversity, 13) bechdel test, 14) visuals-colors, and 15) visuals-anatomy. I kind of explained my reasoning already. Regardless, I still think it’s worth reading (I’ve been reading it for years and I’m not planning on stopping lol), it’s definitely a fun plot and I like a lot of the smaller details, just by a technical standpoint, it doesn’t hold up as well.

If I had a nickel for every time a main, titular character became a kaiju because mental Chernobyl event (the “rampage” didn’t even have any casualties), I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice

Not complaining. Kaiju are cool and also with kaiju symbolizing everything from atomic hubris to cultural turmoil to climate change, it’s about time the genre started tackling psychological issues in its allegory

I'm not going for it because she feels more like a typical cis person (and she has a lot to unpack as is), but I like the idea of transmasc Serena. I like to think she doesnt even like Ash, just has an extreme case of gender envy soijdoaj

And despite the greatest chance for the amazing pun, I like bisexual Gary a lot. IDK, his anime self just feels like someone who do would be into girls too. While Green/Blue/his game self feels very Gay for me :v

Jessie and James are some flavor of Queer platonic too since I don't like them being fully romantic but I can't ever put them apart from one another. So they're in the same limbo as AshDawn in my mind aosdaosdia

Also they are genderqueer, but I'm also unsure about the specifics. And honestly now I think that having some running gag where they give different answers about their gender whenever that is asked is too good not to be a thing ôwô

Sometimes you want to go back. They can see it too.

They see it in the vague movements they catch you making when they come over. The ones you act out unconsciously when the itch strikes. It’s still muscle memory, even if your strength and flexibility aren’t nearly what they were.

“Do you miss it?” They ask one day.

You’re both in the kitchen making dinner, and you’re mocking out an old practice exercise. You don’t stop what you’re doing when you look up at them, legs still moving about.

“Sometimes… some of it.”

“Why did you stop?”

Whatever the reason you left, be it injury or environment, it’s obvious to them how much you still miss it. They can see how bad it kills you inside, how even though it's been a few years the wounds haven’t healed, but they can also see how you aren’t over it. There’s something about it you miss, that-

“I’ve thought about going back, just on my own terms, but I don't know… something about it feels wrong.”

“You don’t have to go back to any kind of unit,” they offer, “we can just do it together.”

For the first time during your conversation, you pause. A small smile pulls at your lips.
