"A 25-year-old woman in China is the first person worldwide to have type 1 diabetes reversed through stem cell therapy.
The therapy used the patients own cells to create personalized stem cells, which were then used to grow fresh insulin-producing islets.
This breakthrough offers hope for millions with diabetes, potentially eliminating the need for daily insulin injections and reducing complications.
In a groundbreaking medical achievement, a 25-year-old woman in Tianjin, China, has had her type 1 diabetes reversed through a novel stem cell therapy. This marks the first time such a feat has been accomplished globally, offering new hope for millions living with the chronic condition.
The patient, who had been struggling with type 1 diabetes, underwent a pioneering treatment that involved converting her own cells into personalized stem cells. These stem cells were then used to grow fresh clusters of ‘islets,’ the hormone-producing cells in the pancreas responsible for regulating blood sugar levels.
As Nature reports, this therapy’s unique approach of transplanting the newly created islets into the patient’s upper abdomen near her pancreas sets it apart from previous islet transplant methods. This strategic placement allows for easier monitoring via MRI, a significant advantage over traditional liver transplants.
“I can eat sugar now,” the woman said on a call with Nature. After over a year since the transplant, she says, “I enjoy eating everything — especially hotpot.” The woman asked to remain anonymous for privacy reasons.
Experts are astonished at the results, according to Timesnownews. “They’ve completely reversed diabetes in the patient, who was requiring substantial amounts of insulin beforehand,” said Dr. James Shapiro, a transplant surgeon and researcher at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.
The implications of this breakthrough are far-reaching, as it could potentially revolutionize the way we treat diabetes. By using a patient’s own cells to create personalized stem cells, this therapy bypasses the limitations of donor islet shortages and the need for immunosuppressive drugs, which have hindered the success of conventional transplant methods.
‘If this is applicable to other patients, it’s going to be wonderful,’ diabetes researcher Daisuke Yabe of Japan’s Kyoto University told reporters via Daily Mail.
As the world watches closely, the success of this case sparks hope for the millions of individuals living with type 1 diabetes. It represents a significant step forward in regenerative medicine and paves the way for further research and development in the field."

Take Control: Managing Elevated Blood Sugar Levels with Diabetes
Living with diabetes can feel like riding a roller coaster. Sometimes you're up, and other times, you're just trying to hold on. Elevated blood sugar levels can lead to complications, but managing them doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Let’s break it down into simple steps that make sense.
Understanding Elevated Blood Sugar Levels
When you eat, your body breaks down food into glucose, which is the fuel your cells need. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps move that glucose into your cells. In diabetes, this system doesn’t work quite like it should. This can leave too much sugar lingering in your bloodstream. Think of it like a traffic jam; instead of flowing smoothly, everything's backed up and causing problems.
Recognizing the Signs
Ever felt unusually thirsty or tired? Maybe you've noticed frequent trips to the bathroom? Those can all be signs your blood sugar is too high. Other signals might include blurred vision or headaches. Paying attention to your body is key. It's like having a built-in alarm system; you just need to know how to listen.
Smart Eating Habits
Your diet plays a significant role in managing your blood sugar. Focus on whole foods that nourish your body. Think fruits, veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains. Picture your plate as a colorful palette. The more colors you have, the more nutrients you’re getting! Try to balance your meals with carbs, proteins, and fats to keep your blood sugar steady.
Regular Exercise: Your Secret Weapon
Let’s talk about exercise – it’s not just for fitness buffs or sports enthusiasts. Moving your body helps your cells use insulin more effectively. Just 30 minutes of walking, biking, or dancing can be a game changer. Think of exercise like a key; it opens the door for glucose to enter your cells. Plus, it lifts your mood and boosts your energy levels.
Monitoring Your Blood Sugar
Keeping an eye on your blood sugar numbers is crucial. Regular testing gives you a clear picture of how your food choices and activities impact your levels. Over time, you’ll start to notice patterns. Maybe you find out a certain snack pushes your numbers up. This knowledge is empowering, like having a roadmap in your back pocket.
Managing Stress: The Silent Saboteur
Stress can sneak in and cause your blood sugar to spike. It’s like an unexpected guest that makes everything chaotic. Stress triggers your body to release hormones that can raise blood sugar. Finding outlets like deep breathing, yoga, or even enjoying a hobby can help keep your stress in check. Think of these activities as a calm oasis amid a busy desert.
The Importance of Medication
Sometimes, lifestyle changes aren’t enough on their own. If your doctor has prescribed medication, it’s essential to take it as directed. Medications can help bridge the gap between what your body needs and what it can produce. Think of medication as a protective shield, safeguarding you from potential complications.
Building a Support System
You're not alone on this journey. Building a support system is vital. This can include friends, family, or join local support groups. Talking about your experience helps lighten the load. It’s like having a team behind you at a big game, cheering you on every step of the way.
Conclusion: Your Path Forward
Managing elevated blood sugar levels with diabetes doesn’t have to feel daunting. By learning about your body, making smart food choices, staying active, and seeking support, you can take significant steps towards better health. Remember, each small change adds up, and you have the power to shape your journey. Embrace this path and take control of your health today!

Expert Fungal Infection Treatment in Surat: Your Path to Healthy Skin and Feet
Fungal infections, though common, can disrupt daily life, causing discomfort and sometimes leading to more severe complications. If left untreated, these infections can worsen and affect various areas of the body, including the skin and feet. For those particularly at risk, such as individuals with diabetes, timely and effective fungal infection treatment is crucial. At Surat Diabetic Foot & Ulcer Clinic, we specialise in treating fungus infections, offering comprehensive care tailored to your needs.
Tumblr media
What Are Fungal Infections and How Do They Affect the Skin and Feet?
Fungal infections are caused by various types of fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments. These infections are highly contagious and can spread rapidly if not treated properly. Common types of fungal infections affecting the skin and feet include:
Athlete's Foot: Affects the toes and soles, leading to itching, redness, and peeling.
Ringworm: Causes circular, scaly patches on the skin.
Yeast Infections: Often found in skin folds or damp areas of the body.
Nail Fungal Infections: Leading to thickened, discoloured nails.
These infections can cause significant discomfort, especially in individuals with diabetic foot problems, as high blood sugar levels can weaken the immune system, making it easier for fungi to invade.
Fungal infection symptoms include redness, itching, and skin peeling. In severe cases, the infection may cause a foul odour, blisters, or thickened nails. Early diagnosis and prompt fungal infection treatment can help prevent these symptoms from becoming more severe.
Why You Should Seek Prompt Fungal Infection Treatment
Fungal infections might seem harmless, but if left untreated, they can lead to serious complications, especially in people with existing health issues like diabetes.
Complications from Untreated Fungal Infections
When not addressed early, fungal infections can spread to larger areas of the body, leading to severe skin damage, painful rashes, or even deeper infections. In severe cases, fungi can invade the bloodstream, leading to life-threatening conditions. Moreover, in diabetic patients, diabetic foot care is essential, as untreated fungal infections can result in ulcers, gangrene, or even amputation.
Advanced Fungal Infection Treatment at Surat Diabetic Foot & Ulcer Clinic
At Surat Diabetic Foot & Ulcer Clinic, we specialise in providing expert fungal infection treatment for individuals of all ages. Our approach combines state-of-the-art treatments and personalised care to effectively manage and treat infections.
Dr. Ashutosh Shah Surat’s Expert Care
Led by Dr. Ashutosh Shah Surat, our clinic offers specialised treatment for a wide range of fungus infections. Dr. Shah has years of experience in treating diabetic foot problems, providing expert solutions to prevent complications and improve overall foot health. He uses a combination of topical and oral medications to treat fungal infections, ensuring comprehensive care for every patient.
Treatment Methods We Use
Topical Antifungal Treatments: Creams, powders, and ointments to directly target and eliminate fungal growth on the skin.
Oral Medications: For more severe or widespread fungal infections, oral antifungal treatments are prescribed to address the infection internally.
Specialised Foot Care for Diabetic Patients: We provide tailored care to manage diabetic feet problems, preventing complications such as ulcers or fungal infections from spreading.
Follow-up care is essential to monitor progress and ensure the infection does not recur. Regular check-ups help keep your feet and skin healthy, free from infections.
Preventing Fungal Infections: Tips for Healthy Skin and Feet
Prevention is always better than treatment. Simple lifestyle changes and good hygiene practices can significantly reduce the risk of fungal infections.
Hygiene Tips for Healthy Skin
Keep skin dry and clean: Fungi thrive in damp environments, so make sure to dry areas such as your feet and underarms thoroughly after bathing or sweating.
Avoid sharing personal items: Items like socks, shoes, and towels can easily spread fungal infections.
Use antifungal powders or sprays: These can help protect your skin, especially if you are prone to foot fungus or other skin infections.
Lifestyle Tips for Foot Health
Wear breathable shoes and socks: Opt for footwear that allows air circulation to keep feet dry and free from moisture.
Change socks regularly: This helps prevent sweat buildup, which can lead to fungal growth.
Eat a balanced diet: A diet rich in vitamins and minerals can improve skin health and support your immune system.
Stay hydrated: Proper hydration keeps skin healthy and more resistant to infections.
Why Choose Surat Diabetic Foot & Ulcer Clinic for Fungal Infection Treatment?

It pisses me off how some people treat people with diabetes. “They should’ve eaten healthier and exercised more”, actually not all forms of diabetes are caused by that, and even so you can’t change the past choices you’ve made and everyone still deserves respect regardless.

How Regular Exercise Reduces the Risk of Diabetes
Diabetes is a significant health concern affecting millions globally, but the good news is that regular exercise can play a pivotal role in reducing the risk of developing this chronic condition. Regular physical activity is beneficial not only for weight management and cardiovascular health but also for blood sugar regulation and insulin sensitivity. In this article, we will explore how regular exercise helps reduce the risk of diabetes and provide tips for incorporating exercise into your daily routine.
Tumblr media
Understanding Diabetes and Its Risk Factors
Diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin. This leads to elevated blood sugar levels, which can cause serious health complications over time. Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, and a family history of diabetes.
The Role of Exercise in Diabetes Prevention
Tumblr media
Improves Insulin Sensitivity: Regular exercise helps improve the body’s sensitivity to insulin. When you exercise, your muscles use more glucose, reducing blood sugar levels. Over time, this increased glucose uptake by muscles makes your body more responsive to insulin, thereby reducing the risk of insulin resistance.
Helps with Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial in preventing diabetes. Exercise helps burn calories, build muscle, and reduce body fat. Even modest weight loss can have a significant impact on reducing diabetes risk. For individuals who are overweight or obese, losing 5-10% of body weight can greatly improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels.
Regulates Blood Sugar Levels: Physical activity helps regulate blood sugar levels by promoting the uptake of glucose into muscle cells. Both aerobic exercises, such as walking, running, and swimming, and resistance training, such as weightlifting, are effective in managing blood sugar levels. Regular exercise also helps to stabilize blood sugar levels throughout the day, reducing the risk of spikes and crashes.
Reduces Visceral Fat: Visceral fat, the fat stored around internal organs, is strongly linked to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Regular exercise helps reduce visceral fat, improving overall metabolic health and lowering diabetes risk.
Enhances Cardiovascular Health: People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Regular exercise strengthens the heart and improves circulation, reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular complications.
Types of Exercise for Diabetes Prevention
Tumblr media
Aerobic Exercise: Activities like brisk walking, running, cycling, swimming, and dancing increase your heart rate and help burn calories. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week.
Resistance Training: Strength training exercises, such as weightlifting, bodyweight exercises (e.g., push-ups, squats), and resistance band workouts, help build muscle mass and improve insulin sensitivity. Incorporate resistance training at least two days a week.
Flexibility and Balance Exercises: Activities like yoga and tai chi enhance flexibility and balance, reducing the risk of injuries and improving overall physical fitness. These exercises also promote relaxation and stress management, which are important for diabetes prevention.
Tips for Incorporating Exercise into Your Routine
Start Slow: If you’re new to exercise, start with small, manageable goals. Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts as your fitness level improves.
Find Activities You Enjoy: Choose exercises that you enjoy to make it easier to stick with your routine. Whether it’s dancing, hiking, or playing a sport, enjoyment will keep you motivated.
Make It a Habit: Consistency is key. Schedule regular workout sessions and treat them as non-negotiable appointments.
Stay Active Throughout the Day: Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine by taking the stairs, walking during breaks, or cycling to work.
Monitor Progress: Keep track of your workouts and progress. Celebrate milestones to stay motivated.
Conclusion
Regular exercise is a powerful tool in reducing the risk of diabetes. By improving insulin sensitivity, aiding in weight management, regulating blood sugar levels, reducing visceral fat, and enhancing cardiovascular health, physical activity provides a comprehensive approach to diabetes prevention. Start incorporating regular exercise into your daily routine today to enjoy its numerous health benefits and significantly reduce your risk of developing diabetes.

Today is the world diabetes day!
Thank you to Luna, my baby chaos gremlin aka cat, for the backdrop.
There are many forms of diabetes. I have type 1 and the technology, like this pump, makes a huge difference! Most people know about type 2 diabetes and for a good reason. About 90% people who have diabetes have type 2. Hallmarks for it include insulin resistance and other problems with produced insulin. There are others like MODY Maturity-onset diabetes of the young. It acts like type 2 diabetes except in young people. The other is LADA aka Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults. This is often called type 1.5. It’s usually not as aggressive as type 1 diabetes.
I was a young kid when I got diagnosed. I immediately started injections. I’ve been injecting until this spring when I was put on hybrid closed loop technology which means my insulin pump get my blood sugar from a sensor and makes decisions how much insulin to give. After about 25 years, it’s been a welcome change. It’s as close to a holiday from diabetes as I am going to get. I started with long needles and a machine that took a minute to give a blood sugar to wearing a sensor that gives me a reading every five minutes.
