Not to be like... "I called it."
But...
I called it. 🥳🤡🕵 I knew Tan was New out for revenge and Phee played some kind of role in it. Alas that my hopes for Phee's loyalty were dashed, but oh well. That's what you get etc.

2024 Recap: ✨A Summary✨
Post your most popular and/or favourite edit/gifset/analysis for each month (it’s okay to skip months!)
@troubled-mind and @my-rose-tinted-glasses brought this back, so here is mine! I can't believe some of this stuff happened this year, it feels like it's been 84 years.
January:
most popular - Deep character analysis of Phaya from The Sign
favorites - The birth of Japanese QL Corner, Breakdown of the Last Twilight finale (siiiigh), love for I Became the Main Role in a BL Drama and Gyeongseong Creature, and this list of some of my fav non-BL jdramas
I was a busy little bee in January! Not surprising, as I tend to hermit at home in the deep winter and do nothing but watch dramas and post too much. JQL Corner became my big project of the year, and I can't believe there wasn't a single week that I didn't have Japanese QL to talk about. I Became the Main and Gyeongseong were both surprise delights that ended up among my favs of the year. I’m still holding my LT grudge, in case anyone had any doubt.
February:
most popular - Praise for Dead Friend Forever's mystery arc
favorites - Appreciation for Love for Love's Sake's ending, every single LITBC book club post that I either wrote or read, my final review of Cooking Crush
The original run for the LITBC book club that @bengiyo and I led! What a great time reading a fantastic book, chatting with besties, and making new friends. I also stand by that praise for DFF's mystery arc--that was the strongest part of the show; the things I took issue with were elsewhere in the story. I have just been thinking I need to rewatch LFLS and this post reminds me why (I remember when it first ended me and @wen-kexing-apologist were like, we're going to watch it again immediately! And then realized we were in no way emotionally prepared for that LMAO). Cooking Crush remains a fav and I may or may not be rewatching right now.
March:
most popular and favorite- An actual love letter to TsukuTabe, my beloved
other favorites - Analysis of Unknown ep 6 aka The Turning Point and big love for Cherry Magic Thailand after the finale
Wow, three of my very favorite shows of the year all happening at once. What a blessed month this was. Also, this is not a specific post, but this is the month when I read Da Ge and then spent weeks with people coming into my DMs to get their own copy of the translation, which was a top fandom experience for me because I met a bunch of new people, some of whom stuck around to talk about Unknown, and it made me feel like an illicit dealer which was very fun.
April:
most popular - The boopening
favorites- A breakdown of the pseudo-incest trope and this list of my favorite friends to lovers dramas
The boopening was a once in a lifetime whimsical tumblr event, and I am so glad I was able to participate fully. I also really like these other two because I feel strongly that all tropes have their place and can be enjoyed when executed well and I love talking about that.
May:
most popular - Love for Oyei and Cher from Wandee Goodday
favorites - Trans Allegory in Cupid's Last Wish, co-authored with @wen-kexing-apologist and @so-much-yet-to-learn and this cdrama rec list.
I spent much of May watching and posting about shows I did not end up liking much in the end, but that is also the month I finally watched CLW with my friends and enjoyed it more than expected, in part because WKA had us watch it through the lens of trans allegory, which totally worked.
June:
most popular - Class disparity themes in Love Sea
favorites - 10 Things I Love About Triage, celebrating Thai marriage equality with @my-rose-tinted-glasses, praise for Marahuyo Project
What a fun Pride month with the start of Love Sea, Knock Knock Boys, Marahuyo Project, The Trainee, and me finally watching Triage.
July:
most popular - Teaching the youths about face fucking and power dynamics in Love Sea
favorites - 10 Things I Love About Oppan and The Miracle of Teddy Bear Saved the Gays with @twig-tea
More great shows. I'm so glad me and Twig ignored the rumors and watched Teddy Bear because it's one of my favorite Thai dramas of all time.
August:
most popular - Cheering on the defeat of noble idiocy in Love Sea
favorites - Praise for Knock Knock Boys and this spicy JBL rec list and this other quality JBL rec list and calling out weird fandom attitudes about JBL
Another good month, and the busiest by far for QL Corner. There were so many JQLs airing this summer! What a time to be alive.
September:
most popular - Documenting Wang's behavior in The On1y One
favorites - 10 Things I Love About Mr. Mitsuya's Planned Feeding, clocking Doku Koi as a fav early, this high school bl rec list and this BL romance rec list
I'm filled with so much bitterness reading that Wang/Tian post. I'll be taking this grudge to the grave!
October:
most popular - Moar boops
favorites - Analyzing Dohoe in Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo and celebrating the first two episodes of Love in the Big City and the creation of the LITBC Drama Book Club Round Up
Two moody Korean shows with complicated gay leads dropped in my birthday month, the book club band was back together, and I got to do Halloween themed boops. I WAS THRIVING IN OCTOBER.
November:
most popular - On fandom as a life saving force
favorites - This list of some of my trash favs for @happypotato48 and getting my feelings out on Young and Gyuho and Hirukawa and Minase and final thoughts on the LITBC drama
I was having a lot of feelings in November.
December:
most popular - Democracy in Squid Game 2
favourite - QL superlatives and grievances, this round up of my fav dramas of the year and being so very normal about Hirukawa
This write up really helped me appreciate that I had good stuff to watch and write about every month this year. There were some disappointments, but also a lot of shows I really loved and it was fun to remember some of the things I wrote. Also, i got to make so many fun rec lists! If you were tagged here, or if you just see this and want to join in, consider yourself invited to do your own!
You can go here to find your top 10 posts of each month.

Thank you for making gifs of DFF and especially the explicit ones. I wonder, why did you cut Ta's ass from that gifset? I am just curious, won't tumblr let you post it? Or is there another reason?
Hahahahahaha thanks for the message!
Tumblr apparently has a personal vendetta against Ta's bare ass.
This had me cackling, sorry. But the sad reality is that I tried to upload the full set (ta's ass shot included) and tumblr hid the gifset even on my own dashboard, but then the moment I removed that particular gif it magically reappeared, so sadly, sacrifices had to be made.

For the gifmaker asks: 5, 26, 39 & 44. Thank you! 💜💜
Hi. Thanks so much for asking. Flower for you🌸
5. how long have you been making gifs?
This blog just turned one this month, so one full year of gif making. It's been a learning experience. Learning from people like you of course💜
26. gif/gifset you’re most proud of
Proud might be a stretch but I'd have to say it's probably one of my DFF sets. This one is probably my favourite. I love every individual gif. I'm kinda proud of them because at least once per episode there was a gif that I really wanted to include but it was a challenge to colour.
39. What is your most popular gifset?
It's this one from Kiseki: Dear To Me. I'd like to think it's because it's a great gifset but something tells me that's not really the reason. It's also technically the second most popular but I don't count the first one because of reasons.
44. do you make gifs in order when making a gifset or just whichever you want to work on most first?
I make gifsets in a different way than most apparently. I don't do the colouring for individuals gifs. I do for the whole set all at once. While in video format. Only then do I turn them into gifs. It's a longer process but it's one I'm familiar with because I was an editor in a previous life. And I don't like to use ps for the whole process. I know it's not the most efficient but it's how I like it.
Thanks for stopping by. Before I go, would you consider reblogging this ask game at some point? I have so many questions I'd like to ask you. Just a suggestion of course.
Have a wonderful day💜

screencapping/giffing the bloody scenes from DFF after two weeks spent solely on 23.5 gifsets is a whole new level of experience
#saturated pretty lesbians vs dark murdering gays#the vibes are so opposite it's insane#though i have to admit it's way less heavy on my mind to gif this dramatic mess after so many days on the ladies#lana.txt

hiiiiii have you seen the new dead friend forever trailer and will you gif it?? love your gifsets <3333333333333
Hi anon! Thank you so much!💜💜
I've seen it, and there's a suspicious lack of Ta Nannakun in this new trailer (compared the to teaser). I wonder what's going on there.
I've previously giffed the DFF teaser here and I'm planning on giffing the series as it airs but I'm not sure I'll find the time to make another gifset of the trailer. There's just too many shows on right now and I'm just too busy with work, I'm so sorry. 😭😭
#ask#jane makes stuff#i wonder if ta's absence from the trailer is intentional#like maybe they did some major rewrites#or maybe i'm too faceblind to find him in the trailer idk

February 2024 Movies/Shows Wrap-Up
A little monthly (spoilery!) wrap-up of all the shows, movies, and shorts I’ve watched or am watching in February 2024, general thoughts, and ranking of them all.
Recommendation of the month(s): Honestly, this month involved me watching BLs which brought something new to the table (omegaverse, fantasy & thai legends, isekai-ed into a game, lawyers and crime) but none of them stood out to me as much as I’d hoped (my greatest wish is stronger, more coherent scriptwriting). Recommendation is try whichever concept seems most appealing.
Ranking
Love For Love's Sake = Midnight Runners (2017) = Laws of Attraction (2023) = Pit Babe = The Sign = Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Average Rating: 6/10 [unfortunate that it’s just 6/6.5s considering I was hoping for more from Pit Babe/The Sign/Laws of Attraction]
MDL Updates - Added to Watchlist:
A section because I’m curious about how many shows I decide to add to my Watch List a month and also the ratio of watching them:adding them.
Title MDL (year) - (date added to Considering or To Watch): initial reaction
Love for Love's Sake (2024): Positive reception and Cha Woongki is in it
Marry My Dead Body (2022) - 240202: I was watching Certified Noonas What's Coming Up in Feb 2023 and came across this, Taiwanese movie where dude marries a (male) ghost
Pit Babe (2023) - 240207: omegaverse racing show wouldn't necessarily draw me in but some Tiktoks I saw of eps 1-2 (esp of Charlie woahhh beautiful boy, I even reblogged on here which I very rarely do for shows I haven't watched yet) were interesting + lately, I've been seeing a lot of praise for it (esp that week when apparently Last Twilight Ep 12 disappointed a lot of people but had a really good episode for this show)
A Shop for Killers (2024) - 240210: I saw it on the Certified Noonas coming up in January I think? But I also saw it getting good impressions on the r/kdrama on-air threads + pocha playlist's initial impression + it has Lee Dong Wook, even though it's not like I watch all his shows or anything
A Killer Paradox (2024) - 240210: Been waiting for this since literally 2023 after I watched Strangers From Hell and saw in Certified Noonas' 2023 releases that it was from the same director + is an interesting concept
My Personal Weatherman (2023) - 240215: I don't know, maybe I just wanna see their dubcon bad bdsm dynamic. also, i keep reblogging horny gifsets cuz there are plenty for this show...
The Sign (2024) - 240215: The finale still isn't properly available yet so I don't really know how people will feel about the end but oh well, I'm gonna end up watching it either way because of how much people have been loving it
Chaser Game W (2024): Another Japanese GL and apparently it has toxic-ish workplace romance + post-breakup second chance romance yay. Also, the tweet where one of the characters is like “I’m a lesbian” *thunder* is hilarious
A Little Romance/Let's Wait for the Rain to Stop (2022) - 240219: A 14-minute Chinese bromance short from this tiktok that I saw
Dead Friend Forever - DFF (2024): I’ve been meaning to watch this since like ep 1 came out and I learned it was supposed to be horror-esque/slasher and seems like people have been loving it even more these past few eps. I’m actually so excited to check it out, I hope I love it and it rots my brain.
To Watch List At Start Of Month: 62
To Watch List At End Of Month: 67
Removed from To Watch List:
Title (Year) - (date removed): reason

Completely Watched
Love for Love's Sake (2024)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Jan 24, 2024 - Feb 1, 2024
Watch Via: paid, so :>
Watch Dates: Feb 1 - 2, 2024
Rating: 6/10
Overall Impression: It was cute, the concept was nice, the early 2 eps were Very promising and last ep was touching but the middle (esp 5-6) was quite meh for me. There was also a bunch of confusing stuff, esp in the second half, but I guess I won't try to investigate too much. It has people really talking and discussing and dissecting it though, which is a fun aspect.

Midnight Runners (2017)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Aug 9, 2017
Watch Via: Tubi (free)
Watch Dates: Feb 3, 2024
Rating: 6/10
Overall Impression: I came in with expectations of copaganda and bromance. Got the copaganda (I mean the real cops were useless af but) and bromance, as well at annoyance at these male-led shows with female victims where the story is solely about the men and they just dilly-dally through it all like why are you not upright enough to be like oh, I shouldn't waste time getting my ears cleaned by pretty girl rn, there's a 7-hour critical timeframe we were taught about, chop chop. Anyway, they were still passionate and did it, so good job but this really was just more about a male power fantasy of being the hero and beating up people and being the "saviour" because it was just about them 2 doing anything and we don't even get a moment of the girls after rescue and like 1 minute of them total before that. I can enjoy these sorts of action movies and like a good fight scene but I think I can be really averse to using crimes against women while centering men in the show (Midnight Runners, fuckass Manner of Death). I love Beyond Evil though, even though 2 male main characters were the focus in this story where a serial killer is killing women but I think that story maybe that story 1) properly showed the gravity of the crime against the women and 2) there wasn't a scene like the ear-cleaning parlor in this one and the sex scene in Manner of Death after they got that important laptop where I was supposed to either find it funny or sexy that they were doing this instead of focusing on the fucking investigation.
Agh, so many words and half of them aren't even about this movie
Laws of Attraction (2023)
Country: Thailand
Release Dates: Jul 15, 2023 - Sep 2, 2023
Watch Via: paid, so :>
Watch Dates: Feb 3 - 6, 2024
Rating: 6/10
Overall Impression: I really liked To Sir, With Love which was a lakorn and so was different than every other BL I've watched and was hoping I'd similarly love this one, which is also bringing something unique to the BL table. It started off really well for me, I thought Charn was such a fun (morally corrupt) character and was intrigued about what was going on. I liked the lesbians Maya and Rose as well ofc. However, I think toward ep 7 and 8, it kinda became very meh for me (that warehouse live stream scene not counting) because the mystery was too predictable/boring and thus had no tension, people kept making incredibly stupid decisions, and I wasn't attached to the characters enough to care/be emotional about all the wedding stuff. Nawin was a great addition in ep 7 though, so unexpected and fun. Unfortunate that the meh impression ended up being the last ones since that sticks with me more than liking it in the earlier eps.

Pit Babe
Country: Thailand
Release Dates: Nov 17, 2023 - Feb 9, 2024
Watch Via: iQiyi (paid, so :>)
Watch Dates: Feb 7 - 11, 2024
Rating: 6/10 [May 12, 2024 Update: Decreased by 0.5 stars when rerating shows I've watched in 2024: 6.5 -> 6]
Overall Impression: This show had everything: non-traditional alpha/alpha relationship, racecar competitions, x-men like superpowers, child trafficking, pseudo-incest if you think about it (from Kenta's side at least), and more. And it didn't have a super strong script, there were nonsensical elements and plot holes that didn't get addressed and things that happened to just move the plot along, but it was a fun watch nonetheless, both for the novelty and the entertainment factor. Babe was a very compelling character with his past and how he behaves in the present and his relationships with Tony/Way/people in general. Also helped that Pavel did a really good job with him and acted his ass off, there were quite a few emotional moments in there. I agree with some people's comments that I wish Charlie's actor Pooh as a better actor. And his character wasn't as developed or with depth as the other ones either, like in terms of emotions I guess. Although I really liked Charlie/Babe, my true ship winners might be Pete/Kenta in a Not Me ToddBlack fashion, to be honest, with Kenta as maybe my favourite character (2nd is Babe). They gave us like 2 tiny hints that they might know each other and waited until literally last 10 mins of episode 11 out of 13 to lay out their history. They have an interesting friends (-> brothers/crush) -> enemies -> allies again at the very end dynamic where I think that they could become lovers post-canon. Really had me writing a fic idea in my notes app after my few months of no drive to write.
tags: pit babe, kenta
Also Appears In: Pit Babe Live Blogging, + my fic heh
240215: I'm not starting Only Friends already because I wanna take some time to write my Pete Babe fic and if I start a new show, I'll stop writing it. However, I was in dire need of some BL and ended up rewatching just bits of Ghost Host Ghost House ep 4 after I saw a gifset on here, then watched like 2 mins of Bed Friend cat Uea and then Eps 13 - 15 of Addicted Heroin. Man, once again, 2016 Addicted Heroin cutoff must've actually been so fucking tragic. Like I'm only rewatching parts of it nearly a decade later + watched the Stay With Me remake and still it's devastating the way it just ends, I can't imagine how people who were watching it in real time coped. How has nobody leaked it even asdfghjkl Also ended up reading chapters 96 - 135 because I was like hm maybe I wanna read more but the book is A Lot, so stopped lol
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)
Country: USA
Release Dates: June 7, 2005
Watch Via: TV
Watch Dates: Feb 19, 2024
Rating: 6/10 [May 12, 2024 Update: Decreased by 0.5 stars when rerating shows I've watched in 2024: 6.5 -> 6]
Overall Impression: This is fun and finally I will understand what people mean when they reference this movie (although I knew that it was about hitmen/spies who were married and didn't know the other was a spy as well and that's pretty accurate). Had one of my favourite tropes of having guns/knives pointed at each other and ample chance to kill the other person but they Can't!!! Todd/Black was my original for this but then we got Vegas/Pete, Pete/Kenta and now this movie which came out like 2 decades before these other shows lol Anyway, fun but not something I will think about again + the characters aren't developed enough for me to care.
The Sign (2024)
Country: Thailand
Release Dates: Nov 25, 2023 - Feb 11 (24), 2024
Watch Via: Youtube
Watch Dates: Feb 20 - 24, 2024
Rating: 6/10 [May 12, 2024 Update: Decreased by 0.5 stars when rerating shows I've watched in 2024: 6.5 -> 6]
Overall Impression: I think I liked the first few eps and the potential of the series and the possibilities than I liked the actual series oof. Since everybody freaking loved this, I also had high expectations. I thought there would be more focus on the romance and fantasy and past lives aspect and less on the cop activity. I feel like they didn't choose the correct things to show on screen. I think most of the fight scenes and stuff were confusing and not choreographed very well, and some moments needed to have more time dedicated to them or have more gravitas to them. However, some moments were just shot/directed so beautifully. I enjoyed the parallels between Tharn and Phaya or their current life and past life. It shows the cyclical nature of Phaya and Tharn's lives, and it would've been even more impactful if we saw more of their past lives (their OG life or other reincarnations). Highly doubt I'm gonna think of the characters again, I somehow stopped being attached to them about halfway through - probably related to the fact that I liked the first few eps (half?) of the show better. They tried so many things, but I don't think they satisfyingly merged them or chose the correct things to focus on on-screen.

I’m not watching anything in the last week of February because I seriously need to study for this exam and can’t have a show distracting me but am also in such desperate need of a BL, so I skimmed some stuff.
240226: Skimmed parts of History 3: Trapped’s last few episodes and it continues to hit. agh, it’s just so good. Also skimmed a bit of Semantic Error middle episodes but not as much as Trapped
240228: Skimmed some middle bits of the Our Dating Sim movie, I really need to rewatch the full thing in year cuz I think it’s possible for it to go from 6.5 -> 7
It’s a shame that I only watched 6 things this month (and 2 of those were movies that) because I had a week of break in the middle from university. Still, it’s fine because I used that week to write a fic after a couple months instead, so I’m not too sad. And since the Thai BLs were pretty like plot-involved (esp The Sign and Laws of Attraction), it makes sense that I wasn’t just jumping from show to show.

I try to live in a world where I don't yuck people's yums even if I don't care for a show. Also I find that if I am going to talk about something in the drama space, it usually has to do with singular actors and proven controversies that show their true colours.
For example on dramas: Not the biggest fan of DFF. And it's not because of petty things it has to do with how the show itself went. I liked maybe 2 episodes in the entire show. Ok more like 1.5 episodes in the entire show. But really even if someone doesn't like something, doesn't mean it's not someone else's gold. There are themes I can say that DFF covers that should be covered in media. I know what it feels like to be on MDL (especially via Thai BL) and read negative comments. I was deterred from some dramas I actually thought I'd vibe with until I came to Tumblr and enjoyed the gifsets and went from there to watch them. Shows like: Manner of Death, A Tale of a Thousand Stars, Ai Long Nhai and LITA. I think people should buffer in their tags when something is a critique. But the algorithm would still share them. I like seeing hot takes and critiques though! Like what went wrong, how it could have worked better in such a ways and such but as long as it doesn't take up the main sphere of the fandom. But yeah negative hate comments get hefty. I know some of the Two Worlds negative comments really infuriated me. Like putting down Nat for being young when he's acted longer than some of the older (in actor's age not in duration of partnerships) couples. Also people being blind to MaxNat's natural chemistry. (Who have consistently made me, a married demisexual woman, blush). Or like the comments on 1000 Years Old in general, I found Tumblr was a safer place than Youtube or MDL for that specific drama. (I LOVE 1000 Years Old). I realized the same thing you did, and I loved Love Sea's first episode! A lot in fact. But I know so many people hate on GMMTV and MMY dramas. And it's because people don't care for grey-to-black morals generally or they don't like dramas that are too laid back. I think, personally, it's a case-by-case if I wish to ignore/block/remove someone commenting negatively. If I feel that I can't stand any of their points of views or that their POVs are dramatically consistently more negative than positive. I ignore and don't dedicate interests in their opinions. IDK why people hate-watch things and talk about it outloud? I will let the fans enjoy it and I will be quiet or I just won't watch the thing I don't like. But I know I personally have worded a thing or two about DFF on my tumblr/a public forum. I know most of them had to do with the controversial characters in the drama but.... They were made to be controversial so people could talk. And it wasn't out of malice. Though.. I did.. uhm.. Rip some comments a part that were trying to muddy Barcode's personal reputation for things Non did in the series. Must protect the Sunflower Boy. I think like when it comes to specific comments. If they are commenting and are being very uneducated or just hating out of spite. I will tell someone to check themselves. But otherwise if I think it's just for clout. I weigh the pros and cons. I have blocked some users because of their consistent shit-posting. In a way though, it was comments that were overwhelmingly negative that took me out of the major QL scope. And also because I didn't find many of the happy fans, I wasn't looking in the right spaces, and I felt lonely. I silently watched QL dramas to myself, and quietly liked and gushed over gifsets on Tumblr. It wasn't until Wardog came back to the Asian Drama Realm (I got her into a Chinese Xianxia drama--- Love Between Fairy and Demon) and then she fell into the Thai BL scene with KP, LITA, Not Me and Cutie Pie, that I returned to watch what I missed. (Minus the few BLs I watched on my own like Manner of Death etc).
Trash-watches and what do you do with your negative opinions?
As Love Sea has started airing I've seen a couple of people posting about it from a very negative point of view. It seems like they already dislike MAME so I'm confused as to why they're even watching it and engaging with the content. It's made me think a lot about negative opinions in fandom spaces and I have a lot of questions.
Firstly, people are of course allowed to feel however they want about shows they're watching and post about them however they want. The truth of people in general is that we have very different experiences in life and that colours the way we perceive media. So when MAME writes about trauma and consent I'm not surprised that some people struggle with finding parts they like in her shows.
It has, however, put me in a dilemma, because I like MeMindY and I'm pretty sure I'm going to like Love Sea as well.
As such I'm not very interested in reading posts about the show that are almost entirely negative, especially when the person who's writing the post is clearly watching a completely different show than me.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for critiquing a show and thinking about the content critically and examining why a show is making you feel bad or angry. The point where I struggle with negative posts is when the poster is seeing bad intentions in places where I very much don't or have hangups with things that to me seem harmless in the specific situation. This is not me saying I'm right and they're wrong. We're really just approaching shows from very different perspectives and coming to very different conclusions.
I've been trying to figure out what to do about those posts and blogs and I'd love to hear any and all thoughts you have on this matter or comments on what you usually do when this happens.
Do you just live with seeing the negative posts on your dash and scroll past them without reading? Do you unfollow people? Do you block people?
This has also made me think a lot about posting negative comments and content in fandom spaces. Like why do you watch these shows when you know you aren't going to like the show from the beginning? And then why do you post about it extensively when you have almost entirely negative things to say about it? Do you guys enjoy making/reading hate-/trash-watches? And if you do, why do you enjoy it? I am honestly curious and won't judge.
Where's the line between useful critique and hateful comments? Are there situations where negative comments in fandom should just be kept to yourself? Should you stay out of the official tags if you only have negative things to say about a show? What do you guys do when you dislike a show?
I'm just so very curious about how people feel about this kind of content. Content like hate-/trash-watches or other ways of engaging with media in a negative way.

#i was talking with a friend about how the scene with kan and tew's mother should've been placed earlier in the show#and there should've been both more sweet moments between the mains AND we could see tew develop a brain outside the precinct#whenever tew was sweet with kan i wasn't sure how to take it#because there were times when it was a clear manipulation tactic and times when it wasn't but the times it wasn't felt so random#unnatural almost#AND TEW YOU LIAR YOU SUSPECTED DR KAN THE WHOLE FUCKING TIME#if you bug a guy's car and then never take it off that's not ending the suspicion dude#UGH. i just watched the finale feeling numb expect during kan's impassioned speech#the series needed more time. i reblogged gifsets after finishing the show of scenes from the trailer that we never saw#why didn't they have the discussion about euthanasia by a fire in the woods during what i presumed would've been the middle of the series?#that's what i was expecting!!!#make a show about controvery and stick to your guns writers#loved the cinematography and acting and for a good part of the show the writing was fantastic#but wow it shot itself in the foot#end rant

i genuinely think the same thing that happened in dff and 4 minutes is what happened here. 8 episodes is not enough to resolve a story as complex and intricate as one that sammon writes. mod was 14 eps. say what you want about it (and the pacing was weird i admit) but it was ENOUGH. and honestly? mod is not nearly as complex a story as this is.
either sammon needs to stop trying to write these stories for tv or they need to give her more time in which to resolve the story. because 2 times is a coincidence. 3 TIMES??? that's a fucking pattern and i probably won't be watching the next sammon series. and that's IT.
Talking with @respectthepetty about the finale, and I think I've figured out my biggest sticking point.
We see the incredible care and love that Kan shows his patients, and Tew's mom in particular. We see him ask her for confirmation multiple times. He brushes her hair, asks her if she has any worries, promises to take care of Tew for her.
He calls her Mom. She cradles his cheek. He sits with her while she falls asleep.
We see this scene play out, we feel Kan's compassion for her, we feel his need to help.
And when he and Tew have their confrontation, he says all of this. He talks about how much it hurts to see people struggle with unbearable pain, how the system doesn't care about how well or how poorly people are living, doesn't care about what people want for their life. He gives an impassioned defense of the need for euthanasia to be made legal.
He tells Tew that his mother died the way she wanted to, that she passed peacefully and on her terms. He tells him that she wanted him to be happy.
And we don't see Tew truly understand any of that. We don't get to see him even really process any of it.
I didn't need or expect Tew to become a supporter of euthanasia, or to even fully forgive and understand what Kan did and why he did it. But it seems like what we got instead was Tew accepting his feelings for Kan, and acknowledging that.
So that "I love you" felt... Misplaced.
What good does a confession do when you've got the man you're in love with handcuffed, on your way to turn him into the police.
(The confrontation itself was beautifully done and it hurt all my feelings. But I'm not sure it was in the right place? There was no room to see them struggling with and processing it. Kan's sad nod of acknowledgement and no response was the correct response, but it was also mine, quick I think is not the desired effect.)
Also, Kan volunteerimg to turn himself in, without arguing for his patients who need him -- in his hospital that is desperately short staffed, in which he is the only palliative care doctor; a point that has been made over and over in the series -- also felt off.
I would've been happier with an ambiguous ending, maybe even the exact same one, where we didn't see the cuffs, and weren't sure what was next for them.
(from my understanding, this is basically the opposite of the source material? There's also the comments from the screenwriter that have kind of left an annoyed filter over all my thoughts about the show, but I digress)
Honestly, I may have been okay(er) with the outcome if we had had more of their relationship development on screen, more of them trying to understand each other (that felt very one sided in the end).
Idk.
The show was beautiful, beautifully acted, and had some very important things to say, and it made its arguments well considering the lines they had to tow. But the politics and the moral struggle of the show were embodied in Kan and Tew, and the culmination of that struggle feels like it wasn't given enough space.
