Happy Theogamia! 🦚💍⚡️
To those who celebrate, I hope you all have a wonderful day filled with love! Just as all of Olympus did with King Zeus and Queen Hera’s 300 year wedding!
I couldn’t do much this year, but I did manage to make this quick drawing for the blessed rulers of Olympus and write a little hymn for this divine anniversary <3
Tumblr media
Hymn for Theogamia
Rejoice in love of Hera! Rejoice in the love of Zeus! Rejoice in the love that their union created!
Blessed Hera Gamêlia, ruler of marriage, seek joy in your own domain on this day. From Hera Pais, the girl and the maiden; to Hera Nympheuomene, a betrothed bride!
Blessed Zeus Teleios, of marriage rites, know how joyous this celebration is! Blessed Zeus Xenios, of strangers and hospitality, may we all join hands and sing of this wonderful day together, feasting, laughing, and dancing with friends and strangers alike!
Oh, gracious rulers of Olympus, King Zeus who delights in thunder, and ox-eyed Queen Hera; join us mortals in celebrating your eternal union - giving love and plenty to us all!

I salute that mother Rukmini, the most beloved consort of Lord Krishna, who has hanging forelocks & lotus- like feet that shine with the tinkling anklets. Her face is lit up with a gentle smile. Her eyes are lotus like & her lustrous waist is rather thin (or timid) due to the heaviness of the breasts. Her bangles tinkle in her arms. She is devoutly worshipped by all the gods with Brahma at their head. She is dressed in beautiful (auspicious) clothes & decorated with gold ornaments.

SHUBH RUKMINI ASHTAMI!!!!
Don't forget to wish her today! You could also offer her her favorite Rasgullas. Our beloved queen is said to have a sweet tooth (˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶).ᐟ.ᐟ

I have something to say about Athena that might be a little weird to hear.
Okay. Here we go:
Athena is a WONDERFUL goddess for mental health.
Now BEFORE YOU COME AT ME, hear me out. So many people say, "she's a logical, strategical goddess" and leave it at that. I have a bone to pick with this statement, because while y'all are technically right, she is SO. MUCH. MORE. THAN. THIS. She's a goddess of war, of protecting what you have, of boundaries, of self care and caring for others, of finding healthy ways to cope, of helpful advice. How can I say these things? What do these have to do with her? IM SO GLAD YOU ASKED.
Here are some of her epithets to help you understand:
Omvrimóthymos: strong of spirit (boundaries, healthy ways to cope)
Ormásteira: she who urges you forward (protecting what you have, self care/caring for others, boundaries again)
Polýllistos: sought with many prayers (healthy ways to cope again, helpful advice)
Polývoulos: of many wise counselings (helpful advice, self care/caring for others, boundaries)
Ima go more in depth about my point.
So in terms of protecting what you have and boundaries, these both have SO MUCH to do with war and strategy. You have to have a strategy when you set boundaries. You can't just be like "this is what I need and if you cant so that screw you." NOPE. Setting boundaries means "I would like you to do y for me, and if you don't, I'll do x". An example of this that I have done is, "I need you to leave me out of the family arguments. If you don't stop talking about it, I'm going to leave the room." I have done this MANY times with Athena's help, and IT WORKS. Boundaries help you protect yourself and what you love. BAM.
When it comes to healthy coping, self care, and caring for others: during war, you HAVE to be caring to yourself and your comrades. You have to be a team, otherwise things go to shit. You have to communicate. You're already going to be traumatized; caring for yourself helps so much. While most of us aren't fighting in literal war, mental health is a war in itself. Athena can and will help you care about yourself during your battles!!!!! Along with this, you need to use coping skills, especially when needing to ground. What do you need when you're grounding? LOGIC. You can't be in la la land and be grounded. What do you also need? Coping skills! Coping skills ARE your ways of being logical!!!!!
Now, the advice thing. She is literally OF MANY WISE COUNSELINGS. People went to her when they needed help. Advice. SO SHE WILL GIVE YOU ADVICE OVER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WHEN YOU NEED IT.
Okay I think that's all I have to say. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

The Water Bearer, watercolor ink and gouache. Royally screwed up the hand and pitcher the first time, so I taped some spare paper over the mistake and redid it. Not the most elegant solution but I wanted a piece I was happy with.
Indigo veiled Dame
Snakes, around your moon-pale arms entwine
Starlight, gleams in your eyes
Exalted, you stand above the well
In deepest darkness and highest heavens to dwell

I think what needs to happen for female characters and f/f ships is the female characters need to be more emotionally constipated. They MUST have some hard edge in there of resistance to produce the vitamin of Compelling.
It's fun if they're more unhinged, sure, but it's not just unhinged characters that are interesting and loveable. Kind characters, weird quiet characters, dignified characters, cold characters, gruff ones, it's good to have variety.
But what makes a character compelling a lot of the time? When they take a weird stance on something. A place of stubborn. An integrity of attitude. A mask they're wearing, an emotion they're sublimating. They're holding something back, they have a measure of composure, they are, in a word, emotionally constipated. Not necessarily too much! Just enough so that they have some depth! That the hidden part of two characters can collide and spark some damn chemistry!
It's the same rule as for eroticism, it is created by the juxtaposition of the hidden and the revealed.
Why do we love villains and toxic ships? They're not bland. They have that rule of erotic thing going on, emotionally. Now it's possible to not be bland at all without villainery or toxicity, but for some reason when it comes to female characters, it trips back into blandness a lot of the time. Gruffness or coldness becomes plain harshness. Vulnerability becomes boring weakness. Put two such women together and the bland collides into the bland and only brave souls with very active imaginations manage to salvage some Compelling from this. I'm afraid it's often entirely absent from the source material, though.

Persephone Reclines
Tumblr media
On a fallen tree trunk you recline,
hair unbound and sun shining on your face.
A smile graces your lips,
which are covered in pomegranate juice.
You hold the fruit in your right hand,
your left cradling the back of your head
all casual and calm.
The nectar of the pomegranate drips
from your mouth as you munch,
having bitten through the skin in a savage way.
With a red blotched face and damp hands,
the manner that you indulge would be considered
reckless and unkempt in the eyes of mortals.
You rip through the flesh of the fruit greedily,
spitting out what can’t be eaten.
Greedy behavior to some,
but you have just returned from a land
barren of natures gifts-
you have the right to be as greedy as you please,
smiling through crimson stained teeth.

Welcome back, Mother Persephone. We’ve missed You :)

"[Elizabeth Woodville's] piety as queen seems to have been broadly conventional for a fifteenth-century royal, encompassing pilgrimages, membership of various fraternities, a particular devotion to her name saint, notable generosity to the Carthusians, and the foundation of a chantry at Westminster after her son was born there. ['On other occasions she supported planned religious foundations in London, […] made generous gifts to Eton College, and petitioned the pope to extend the circumstances in which indulgences could be acquired by observing the feast of the Visitation']. One possible indicator of a more personal, and more sophisticated, thread in her piety is a book of Hours of the Guardian Angel which Sutton and Visser-Fuchs have argued was commissioned for her, very possibly at her request."
— J.L. Laynesmith, "Elizabeth Woodville: The Knight's Widow", Later Plantagenet and Wars of the Roses Consorts: Power, Influence, Dynasty
#historicwomendaily#elizabeth woodville#my post#friendly reminder that there's nothing indicating that Elizabeth was exceptionally pious or that her piety was 'beyond purely conventional'#(something first claimed by Anne Crawford who simultaneously claimed that Elizabeth was 'grasping and totally lacking in scruple' so...)#EW's piety as queen may have stood out compared to former 15th century predecessors and definitely stood out compared to her husband#but her actions in themselves were not especially novel or 'beyond normal' and by themselves don't indicate unusual piety on her part#As Laynesmith's more recent research observes they seem to have been 'broadly conventional'#A conclusion arrived at Derek Neal as well who also points out that in general queens and elite noblewomen simply had wider means#of 'visible material expression of [their] personal devotion' - and also emphasizes how we should look at their wider circumstances#to understand their actions (eg: the death of Elizabeth's son George in 1479 as a motivating factor)#It's nice that we know a bit about Elizabeth's more personal piety - for eg she seems to have developed an attachment to Westminster Abbey#It's possible her (outward) piety increased across her queenship - she undertook most of her religious projects in later years#But again - none of them indicate the *level* of her piety (ie: they don't indicate that she was beyond conventionally pious)#By 1475 it seems that contemporaries identified Cecily Neville as the most personally devout from the Yorkist family#(though Elizabeth and even Cecily's sons were far greater patrons)#I think people also assume this because of her retirement to Westminster post 1485#which doesn't work because 1) we don't actually know when she retired? as Laynesmith says there is no actual evidence for the traditional#date of 12 February 1487#2) she had very secular reasons for retiring (grief over the death of her children? her lack of dower lands or estates which most other#widows had? her options were very limited; choosing to reside in the abbey is not particularly surprising. it's a massive and unneeded jump#to claim that it was motivated solely by piety (especially because it wasn't a complete 'retirement' in the way people assume it was)#I think historians have a habit of using her piety as a GOTCHA!' point against her vilification - which is a flawed and stupid argument#Elizabeth could be the most pious individual in the world and still be the pantomime villain Ricardians/Yorkists claim she was#They're not mutually exclusive; this line of thinking is useless#I think this also stems from the fact that we simply know very little about Elizabeth as an individual (ie: her hobbies/interests)#certainly far less than we do for other prominent women Margaret of Anjou; Elizabeth of York;; Cecily Neville or Margaret Beaufort#and I think rather than emphasizing that gap of knowledge her historians merely try to fill it up with 'she was pious!'#which is ... an incredibly lackluster take. I think it's better to just acknowledge that we don't know much about this historical figure#ie: I do wish that her piety and patronage was emphasized more yes. but it shouldn't flip too far to the other side either.

actually Minthara and the durge I just made could potentially have the weirdest dynamic ever because it’s like
Minthara: served Lolth -> converted to the absolute -> became an atheist trying to get me to serve Bhaal
My durge: served Bhaal -> created the absolute -> became a Lolth worshipper
Honestly it almost makes me wish I was gonna romance her with this character
