I did this with my character, Devi!
Shes curious and eager to learn to a fault. If there is the promise of lost or hidden knowledge, she will be determined or drawn to investigate and learn, even if its dangerous/not in her best interests to do so. Makes for a good reason she ends up in interesting situations, but causes her lots of issues.
If you're not sure how to give your characters faults and flaws, the best way in my opinion is to add "to a fault" to their strongest defining feature, because that's usually how people are: in the worst situations, their best trait is their worst trait. It adds depth to your character, makes them more prone to mistakes and miscalculations, while still being credible and without making them unlikeable. It makes them more human, doing their best and having their virtues, but not at all perfect or unrealistically flawless.
Your character is loyal? How about loyal to a fault, willing to stick to agreements and commit to people even when they're starting to see that doing so is not the right thing to do.
Your character is kind-hearted? How about kind-hearted to a fault, willing to believe in the kindness of others and have good faith in them and their intentions even when their kindness is taken advantage of.
Your character is brave? How about brave to a fault, willing to take terrible risks for the chance of improving a situation, sometimes with terrible results.
Throws in a lot of realism and depth when the character's arc of growing and improving as a person isn't about just quitting an exclusively bad toxic thing they do, but learning to recognise when their best virtue no longer serves them and the common good. Or use it as a character's descent to darkness, when they don't learn to make that recognition, and continue to commit to their defining trait with disasterous results. Nothing quite as tragic as someone's best virtue becomes their fatal flaw.

The pebble
.... so you've somehow, someway have done the equivalent of a marriage proposal without realizing it. To Balam of all demons. Who accepted it.
One part of your brain was still in the wait, what just happened phase. But another part was running around hands in the air and screaming. "YES, YES, YES!" And course your greedy side was singing. "Mine, mine, mine, he's all mine!"
Overall, no regrets. You could live with this. In fact, he accepted, so no take backs, no returns. To think is all started with a shiny rock you found.
*earlier that day*
You had just been wandering the gardens, nothing really on your mind. That's when you spotted something glittery from the corner of your eye. There, by the edge of one of the ponds, was a pebble. You knelt down and carefully picked it up. How pretty!
It was maybe half the size of your palm and somewhat smooth except for the rough edging on its left side. The color was deep blue. With specks of purple, and was that silver along the jard edge? It reminded you of something.
You stood up and lifted it to the light, getting an even better view of the reflective surface. It was so colorful and so soothing to fiddle with in your hand. Releasing a pleased hum, you pocketed your find and walked back inside.
Zipping down the hall, you made your way to the den where the children were currently doing their homework. You laughed when Clara and Lied tackled you whining about the piles of work they still had. You cooed and petted both their heads before nudging them off you.
"Okay. Tell me what you don't understand and we'll go from there." Soon, all the kids were huddled tail and limbs around you as you helped with homework and talked about upcoming projects. How comfy this place felt now that it was full of life just about every day.
"Is Balam-sensei coming over later?" Iruma asked egarly as he tenderly held one of the books his teacher had gifted to him. You beamed and reached out to pinch his cheek. "Course he is how can he not want to spend time with such cute students!" Making several of the kids laugh.
"You two have been getting along well, haven't you?" Giggled Elizabetta, her tail swinging playfully back and forth. You narrowed your eyes at her for a moment before flicking her forehead. "Ow." You watched her pout for a minute before smiling.
"You're getting cheeky, aren't you. That's what you get for taking after your mentor." Playfully wagging a finger at her. "But it's no surprise that Balam-sensei is head over heels for you. He practically has hearts in his eyes whenever he sees you." Lied piped up, and you ruffled his hair as you tried to hide your embarrassment.
Of course, more of your kids chimed in, ganging up on you. "Yeah, yeah, super lovey dovey." Pops up an excited, Clara. "You two do make a lovely couple." Alice nodding happily. "I wouldn't mind another parent. Balam-sensei is cool and very nice to us." Jazz says casually, leaning against your shoulders, preventing any escape.
You spotted opera and Sullivan peering into the room mischief in their eyes. You knew exactly where the kids got the idea now. You mouthed 'traitors', and they quickly disappeared.
So this is how you would die. Out of pure embarrassment. There was a knock on the door. Oh, thank devi. You scrambled up and out of the pile. "I've got it! I've got it! Nobody else gets up!" Dashing to the front door. Yanking the door open, you saw the Demon in question.
He reached out and cupped your face gently so that he didn't hurt you. "Are you alright? Your face is red? You didn't have to run. I could have waited." Carefully turning your face before lifting you up for a closer look.
"No, no, I'm fine, just embarrassed is all," you laugh nervously as you attempt to wave off his concern. Looking at him face to face, you couldn't help but recall the conversation from before, causing a darker blush to spread.
"The kids will be happy to see you." You quickly changed the subject. "Their in the den." He cradled you to his chest, and you relaxed. It was your favorite spot, after all. Making his way inside, you avoided the kids' gazes and just listened to them interact with Balam-San.
You couldn't help but stare at him as your thoughts roamed freely. He was so sweet. A calming presence in the wild hellish world you now lived in. He had helped you and all your kids more than once. He was strong, an unyielding shield that protected all he stood before.
Honestly, you doubted you could have survived long without his assistance. Thankfully, Opera had the foresight to introduce the two of you. You smiled at the memory.
*flashback to adoration your pov*
You hadn't known much, well actually you knew nothing about the world you found yourself now living in. But that moment when you turned around and saw him staring at you kneeling in the entryway. Well, the way he looked at you made you feel special. You felt like you were some kind of artwork in his eyes, a long-lost mater piece brought to light.
His size alone should have intimidated you. Kneeling, he was still a little taller than you. But maybe it was the fact that he was so lost in thought that made you approach carefully. One step then two. Till you stood before him in the light waiting for him to realize your flaws.
That moment never seemed to come. In fact, it was harder to tell with his wild hair and the mask that covered half his face, but you could have sworn he was crying. He was crying! What a silly demon. You couldn't help but laugh.
You remember what Opera had briefly mentioned to you before meeting him. "He's been wanting to meet a human his entire life. He'll probably overwhelm you with questions and constant touches, but it's doubtful He'll ever harm you." The words brining comfort to you in that moment.
"I hear you've been waiting a long time for me. Is that true?" You prompted, watching as his head bobbed rapidly. 'So pretty.' You remember thinking in that moment seeing the bright colored eyes reflecting your image. "You know something?" You teased out, watching him as he subconsciously leaned forward.
You brought yourself closer, too, and it felt safe. Surprisingly safe and warm as you made sure he was making eye contact. "I think you and I are going to get along just fine. Please take good care of me." You giggled. Reminded of him stuttering out his reply. "O-of course."
*end flashback*
The happiness in those eyes radiant like starlight. You shake yourself out of the memory to realize you had been left alone with Balam. How he was still holding you as he read a book. Seeming content. His heartbeat is slow and calm.
"Mmmh, so they all left us, huh?" You teased. He chuckled. "It seems so." You shifted only to feel the weight in your pocket. Oh! The pebble. That gave you an idea.
"Hold out your hand." You instructed as you sat up straighter and pulled out your shiny treasure. That's what it reminded you of, Balam himself. He held out his hand curiosity in his eyes.
Carefully, you placed it in his palm and smiled. "It reminded me of you. It's so pretty. I'm sure you'll like it!" The gargoyle could only stare at it with wide eyes as you smiled confidently. "A-are you sure?" He seemed to stumble.
"Of course, I'm sure! It's almost the exact same shade as your eyes! I'll show you wait there while I get a mirror!" You jumped off of him and rushed to the bathroom where you recalled setting down a hand mirror this morning.
**Balams pov**
... his brain was not functioning correctly. In his palm, he held a saints tear. One of the rarest minerals in the netherworld. And to top it all off, you just handed it to him. Saying that, he resembled it! A bright red blush covered his face, thankfully contained by his mask.
How did you know this was how gargoyles courted?!?! Presenting a simple pebble was usually how it went, but you were giving him a priceless gift! The darker the color, the more expensive they were. Hesitantly, he rubbed the near smooth surface. A courting gift.
What was his human thinking??? They needed to make a nest with plenty of room for the kids and to ask Sullivan for his blessing. Wait! Did humans even build nests? He'd have to ask iruma! He sped up the stairs and opened the door to said boys' room. "Iruma!"
Big blue eyes stared up at him innocently, unaware of the large demons' internal crisis. "Yes, Balam-sensei?" He asked. "H-how do hu-humans court? Do you build nests? What should be given in return?" The teenagers' eyes bulged in shock at the overwhelming amount of questions.
"Well, I mean, I thought you were already courting Balam-sensei. That is well. You two are always cuddling and playing with each other's hair. You always eat together. And you help them with all of us even though you don't have to, and they never once asked you. Umm, humans don't really build nests, but we like comfort, and they always seem to be comfortable with you or in your vines, so I don't think it's a problem. As for gifts, um, most do jewelry, but Grandpa gives them lost of jewelry, so o don't think that will work. Maybe something handmade?"
He found himself listening with rapid attention nodding egarly for more information, but before he could ask anything else he heard. "Balam? Shichirou? Where did you go?" Panic entered his mind he hadn't said yes yet! What if they thought he ran off!??!
Zooming back down the stairs, he barely stopped behind you. "Oh, there you are! Look at you. You have your poor feathers all ruffled up. Such a shame they're so lovely, too." As they reached out and attempted to settle zome of his neck fluff, an idea came to mind.
**you currently**
You were momentarily startled when balam lifted you up and set you down on the couch. He knelt down so that both of you were of closer height. He seemed nervous, and you weren't sure why. Taking a deep breath, he took hold of both your hands.
"I-I never thought that there wo-would be an-anyone that wanted me. I'm not ex-exactly a catch by demon standards." You reared up about to fight anyone who had ever said anything, but he squeezed your hands, getting you to focus again.
"But I am so glad. Extatic that you would gift me something so precious." You blinked... was he talking about the rock? "I promise I will always cherish it, and I accept your offer in courting." Oh my devi, he was talking about the rock. How did he think this was a courting gift???
"I ca-can't offer you much in return, but I -I hope these will do for now." He pulled out a few of his own feathers and slowly weaved them into your hair. Tears began to swell in your eyes. Oh! "Perfect." You whispered in awe.
Throwing your arms around him tightly. "It's perfect! Don't get me anything else! I'll be so mad if you even try." You croaked out on the verge of sobbing. A pleasant rumble escaped the demons large chest as he held you against him.
You snickered for a moment. "What is it?" He asked you. "Ah, I just thought that this means Kalego-San will have to come over more if he wants to see you." More laughter spilled out, and the gargoyle also tried to muffle his own laughs at the looks of horror and distain his colleague was sure to have when given the news.
He watched as you pleasantly played with the feathers now decorating your hair. ☆one perfect pebble, just one humble stone. But oh, what a stone can do~ it means that I have one love forever and one love alone. A now and forever with you~☆ You kissed his temple as he stared at you in amazement.
"Does this mean we get to call Balam-sensei dad now?" Both of you jumped startled by Soi's question. Sneaky child. You could see the others on the stairs looking hopeful. You returned your gaze to shichirou, who appeared to be swelling with pride and embarrassment.
"Were kinda a package deal. You want one of us, you gotta take all of us." The playful smile on your lips as you nudge him to answer. "I'd be honored." The words coming out with reverence and joy. Leading to a large 'family' cuddle pile.

washing machine heart
Tw: mentions of domestic abuse, bad use of english.
You blinked when you saw another message from Devi. You smiled and didn't hesitate to answer her, she replied instantly and you continued with the topic of this year's goals because Devi didn't want to say a word, the most you managed to get was that it's a surprise. You mumbled defeated and looked at your beloved pet who returned your discouragement. "I'm coming, Dido." You sneaked up and walked over to your turtle's little makeshift pond. You'd had her since you were nine years old when you and your younger sisters asked for a puppy, but after your father's scream, the most you could get was Dido. You adored Dido and you were sure she adored you. Or at least she had to because you was the only one who cared for her. "Good morning, sweetheart."
You almost jumped with surprise when you heard your father. It was very rare to saw him in the early morning, you usually only met him for about five minutes at breakfast before you left for school. "Good morning, dad. " You headed to the small yard where you threw the garbage. Your father smiled at you like he did when he wasn't angry and went to the refrigerator, he was wearing sweatpants and his classic white bividi. "Would you like a salad?" he pointed to the apples they had gotten from a contest at the grocery market. "Sure, let me get dressed." Apparently you wouldn't eat at school today. Much better, breakfast food wasn't very delicious and ended up leaving you hungrier. You pulled out your backpack and put away your cell phone. For a moment, you thought about Ben. Your nemesis. You'd see him in most of the classes today, but that's the good thing, they would be exciting classes, and besides, you'd prepared in advance for the courses. "So early? "your father asked with a distracted air, as if you didn't usually leave at this hour. You were about to answer, but your sister Liana appeared, a curious thing because she was the sleepiest. "Will you two please stop making noise?" she growled. "You won't let me sleep."
"Okay, my life." She left just as she came. Your progenitor passed the plate and silverware, apparently, he had taken the matter of keeping quiet lightly. "How's school going?" "Pretty good, although today is the first day. " You pinned your gaze on his hair, he was balding and gray hair was starting to appear. You moved your legs anxiously, he'll soon be too old…. You shook your head at your dark thoughts. "Much better, let's not lose focus on the studio." You agreed. "Do you know what we're going to have for dinner?" "No idea, that's your mother's business." You mentally cursed, they were still fighting. "Well, whatever," you said hurriedly, "I'll be leaving in a few minutes. "Don't you want me to come with you?" "Uh…, no, thanks. I'm a big girl now." "It's dangerous to go out at this hour, we don't live in the safest place in the world…" "I wouldn't worry about that "you insisted. "I've been out several times and, besides, I know self-defense." You walke quickly to the door, preventing from saying anything else to antagonize you. "Goodbye!"
You were thankful it was still dawn and jogged out of the building. You could hear barking from the street and some sounds of cars, the usual. You relaxed for a moment. You hated being late, the thought alone made you nauseous. Often as a child you would start crying when you were late somewhere and your face would turn so red they would call you tomato. You raised your arm towards a bus and decided to distract yourself for a moment by the window, you didn't want to invade your first morning with unpleasant memories. The sky was blue when you ran into Eleanor. "Hi!" you kissed her cheek. You expected some new theatrical greeting and so it was because she brought her hand up to her chest. "How's that?" "It's hello! in Malaysia, I'm practicing for a role at the club." "You don't even need to practice, you're the president." "Aww, stop it." "It's just the truth, you're the best. What's with the earring?" "You like it? I picked it out at a Cherokee store." "In a Cherokee store? "you asked with interest. You were of native Latino ancestry and were glad to know that you always hear from other Native Americans. "Yes it is! It's near my house, if you come by on Friday I can show it to you. I brought you some sweet min paos, my stepmother loved how you complimented her baked goods." "She's an excellent cook…and wow, thank you" happily, you stowed the small cardboard container in your backpack. "Wait a minute, isn't that Fabiola?" "Let's both say hello to her at the same time! " Both of you headed for the entrance to the technology room. However, you collided with the undesirable. "What's with that zombie face, (Y/n)?" he smirked presumptuously, he was right, you rarely slept well." Nervous because you'll come in second place?" "Oh, please "you teased. "I could take you down single-handedly." "Oh, really? Just like I did with you in Karate class?"
"Just so you know, I got brown belt. I'm going to take your place this year." "Yeah, right," he replied as if what you said was a silly joke. "Remember I beat you by two extracurriculars." "Don't claim victory! " you exclaimed. "I negotiated with Devi and now I'll be in the same number of classes as you. Who knows, maybe I'll overshadow you in some. "You wouldn't dare!" he looked at you with indignation. "Well yes I do" you pointed at his chest. "(Y/N)" Eleanor called out to you. "This isn't over!" "No doubt about it! " you gave him a mean look and went to Eleanor. You ran to catch up with Fabiola, who was unusually distracted, her afro hair was quite shiny, apparently she had slathered on some lotion. Dramatically, Eleanor put her hand to her chest and you mimicked her, though not with as much expression. "Did I miss something?" "It's a greeting in Malaysia "you casually commented. "I greet them too " she imitated you. "Have you seen Devi?" "Not a sign of her." For some reason, you had a feeling she would sweep them off their feet to some madness. That was what you liked about her, she could do things you wouldn't dare me to do. "Girls!"you heard Devi's excited voice. "Devi!" "Everything okay?" you raised an eyebrow. In the distance, you could see the silhouette of annoying Ben. "Yes! I have a plan that will change our lives." Her bright gaze told you that you would unite in madness, as you were used to since elementary school.

Locking Eyes at Thirunallam
@harinishivaa 's Enadhuyire part 1 enabled me to reimagine AMV & Vanathi's first meeting at Thirunallam…hope you'll like it
Arulmozhi closed his eyes and enjoyed the light breeze that ruffled his hair. Maybe coming to Thirunallam was a good idea after all. He was riding his elephant after a refreshing bath at Ponni. This was the only breather he could take before his family and the royal council bombarded him with marriage proposals. Why couldn't they understand that he didn't wanted to marry a girl right of the bat but needed time to understand that person before making such a critical decision. It was not only about the future of the Chozha Nadu but also about his future. And the future of the girl he was marrying. But apparently the council only cared about securing their positions as inlaws and strengthening their own status. He let out a deep sigh. No use getting a headache thinking about all this now. He came here to distract himself from the royal politics and to be with nature. Be with his Ponni.
"Oh Yaanai Paaga!" Hearing a female shout he turned his head around and saw a woman standing near a big tree, waving her hands at him. "Come here, quick!" She called him over urgently.
A million thoughts passed through his mind. Who was this woman? She did seem familiar, judging from her clothes and jewelleries, he assumed she must be one of his Akka's companions perhaps. She didn't visibly seemed to be in any sort of danger but her face held an expression of fear and anxiety which made him hurry his elephant over to her. "Yes, what is the matter Devi?" He asked, giving her a reassuring smile. The woman blushed and seemed to be tongue tied, merely pointed her finger towards the upper branch of the tree. Arulmozhi followed the direction of her finger and saw a nest consisting of what looked like woodpecker fledglings, crying out as the nest was lopsided on the branch. "A wild cat attacked the nest" He heard her again, and couldn't help but note how sweet her voice was "I shooed away the cat but the nest got lopsided. Could you help fix it?" She looked at him with pleaded eyes.
He nodded and touched the elephant's forehead and pointed towards the nest. The elephant, his constant companion in expeditions, understood his intention and using its trunk, slightly nudged the nest upright, the fledglings ceasing their cries immediately. The task accomplished, he looked around for the girl, only to find her missing. Has she gone already? He didn't even had a chance to talk to her properly, he was surprised to find himself so disappointed.
"Penne, where have you gone?" He called out for good measure and was surprised when he heard a reply "I am here" He found her standing near the lotus pond, flashing him a friendly smile. "You have my infinite gratitude Yaanai Paaga" Ah, so she truly believed he was a mahout! No blame to her, since he was wearing ordinary clothes, ditching his princely attires so no one can report his wanderings to his Akka. He decided to see how much he could keep his act. "Don't I get a reward Devi?" He meant to lightly tease her, for what he didn't knew. The woman regarded him "Of course. I'll ask my uncle to appoint you to the highest position in the mahout regiment of the Kodumbalur army" She said genuinely and he felt his smile fade. Kodumbalur? And she mentioned her uncle. So Is this Vanathi Devi, the niece of Periya Velar and the Kodumbalur Kula Vilakk? Not to mention the first candidate in his Akka's list of potential brides for him. He allowed himself to look at her properly this time. Her purple saree complimented her complexion well. She was beautiful, no doubt, with an even more beautiful smile and big, doe eyes. She spoke with confidence although her cheeks were tinged red from nervous or shyness. Arulmozhi felt his heart beating out of his chest, afraid the Kodumbalur Ilavarasi might hear it. Nevertheless, he managed to keep his composure.
"I'm truly glad to serve Arulmozhi Ilavarase, Devi. But thank you for the offer" He said and prepared to leave.
"What's your opinion of your Ponniyin Selvan?" He was pleasantly surprised by her question.
"Why do ask, Devi?" She looked embarrassed. "I heard he has arrived at Thirunallam and I just wanted to know. Beyond the usual description of him as the Surya Kula Manikkam and Ponniyin Selvan. About his likes and dislikes and his pasttime activities and his favourite thevarams."
"Why don't you ask him yourself?" Yes, now he was eager to talk with her and imagine her shock when he reveals his identity.
"Maybe I will" She said, saying more to herself than to him, gaze fixed on the lotus pond."I cannot marry someone unless I understand them as a person"
"I was thinking the same" He realised he said that thought aloud when he saw her face him " Why? You're marriage is also fixed?" She asked genuinely.
"Ummm….yes Devi. Now, excuse me. I have to leave" He guided his elephant to turn around and walk, not before hearing her call out "Oh Yaanai Paaga, don't tell Ponniyin Selvan I asked about him"
He suppressed a laugh and turned around to see her "Why would I tell him when he himself knows?"
She gave him a puzzled look "What do you mean?"
"You'll know" He shouted back "Now let me go back to my Akka. She is very persistent, being the Ilaiya Piratti"
He enjoyed seeing her confused look turn into utter shock and embarrassment and flashed her a grin.

She sat silently, and only quiet sobs from time to time and slight shaking of her shoulders reminded that she's been crying relentlessly for hours now. Riam has been holding her close, his cheek pressed against the top of her head. It did soothe her, but tears still refused to stop.
"I thought you were over your past," she was quietly asked, but she only shook her head.
"To be over my past, I had to accept a simple fact: time does not, in fact, heal. So I had to learn to accept that pain as the part of me, a crucial part, in fact, and learn to live with it, but facing it head-on, being thrown into the pond of those memories, having them wash over me, it hurts just as much as it hurt all the way back when it happened."
She looked at Riam and he pulled away slightly. Devi got up.
"He was right. Seeing him suffer did not bring me happiness. Not at all."
"Maybe that's for the best," Riam said. Devi turned her head slightly towards him. He continued. "It means you're still you. Don't you think it takes a special kind of fucked up and twisted soul to truly take enjoyment in others' sufferings?"
Devi paused for a bit then shrugged as she turned to leave. "Maybe you're right."
As the door closed behind her, it was quiet for a bit. Then Riam sighed and got up. He didn't say it, but his heart was bleeding too. Not only seeing his love hurt and be unable to help in any meaningful way was killing him, but knowing that he himself was the source of her pain... And no matter how many times she says that it wasn't his fault and he couldn't do anything, she said it right - it will never go away. But he couldn't say anything. It would be insensitive and would only hurt her more. Her pain was worse. She was what mattered. Him? He can take it. He is a man. The Man. As he opened the door to follow her, he understood that she would be most unhappy with the way his thoughts flew. But thankfully she was busy enough to read them, thus he could safely continue ignoring the voice of reason in his head.
She was standing by the window. Riam couldn't quite see her face clearly, but he did see the way her tears glistened under the starlight. He came up to her quietly.
"I'm okay," she said, trying to suppress the quivering in her voice.
"Liar." Riam put his arm over her shoulder.
A tear rolled down Devi's chin and splattered over her chest. "Damn right I am." She sniffed and held herself in her arms. "They just won't stop," she said. "No matter what, they keep streaming down, but..."
"But..?" Riam pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her.
"I don't feel... You know how when you cry, your eyes are burning, and you don't feel relieved at all, you just feel empty, and you end up feeling even worse... You know? Well, I don't feel that. I feel... good? Even though I can't stop crying, I feel... So light, actually." She looked up at him. "Maybe it's 'cause you're with me." She smiled, making more tears stream down her face.
Riam hugged her tightly and put his chin on top of her head. They stood quietly like that, gazing at distant stars. Riam tried to remember the last time he let himself cry.

Rand/Mat/Tuon, judicious
[Send me a character or pairing, and a one word prompt, and I'll write you a drabble!]
Fortuona Athaem Devi Paendrag stood at the edge of her chambers, luxuriating in the feel of silk curtains brushing against her bare skin. The faint salt twanged breeze that came up off the River Eldar had mostly dried her of the left over water from her bath, and she could at any time, retreat back into her chambers to be dressed and begin hearing the day’s reports. But for the moment she was content to simply stand, hidden by the fluttering of the curtains and observe the garden below.
Inarian laid sprawled out beside one of the ponds there, where she had left him the night before, a sheer silken blanket covering his naked form. His hat, coat, scarf and other effects she had ordered returned to his sleeping chambers, but his ashandarei and his medallion she had ordered to remain untouched. If he wanted to depart, he would do so inconvenienced but not seriously hindered. A fine line to walk, but a necessary one, now more then ever.
She had acknowledged him officially as Emperor Consort, which made him Lord of the Tower and, in theory, her most important councilor and ally, as it was supposed to be with every Empress and her consort, though it had rarely been so in truth. Even Lothair Paendrag had kept a Favorite to shower with his affection and love, while marrying for the good of his budding Empire, as was practical and necessary for a ruler.
Yet the common folk required some illusions and romantic notions to take away the sting of harsh truths. A nation existed as much because people believed in it, as for anything done with a soldier’s blade or an official's pen, and to believe required the sorts of stories that made children starry eyed. That the Seekers never erred in their quest for the truth. That the army was truly always victorious in the end. That the Empress loved the Emperor.
She had never expected to find truth in the illusion, anymore then she had expected to be stolen away by a dashing hero.
And yet…
A silvery slash of light appeared in the garden and lengthened till it was tall an archway. From where she was standing that slash seemed to widen and part, becoming a silvery haze in the shape of a solid rectangle, before snapping back into a slash again and winking out.
The man who had stepped out of the gateway walked with all the confidence of a member of the Deathwatch Guard, as if he where not an intruder in the heart of Seanchan power and violating so many laws by his mere presence that he could, at the least, expect to be condemned to the Tower of Ravens for the rest of his life.
If he where anyone else that was.
Fortuona watched the man cross the garden, the blades of grass seeming to visibly grow greener, the trees more full in branch and flower, by his mere presence alone, and stoop down to where Inarian was laying beneath his blanket. She knew he was pressing his mouth close to Inarian’s ear to whisper to him. Fortuona watched her husband stir, coaxed by his lover’s voice to wakefulness, and she did not need to be near enough to hear to know that there would be soft laughter in both their words, anymore then she needed to see them to know that smiles would be painting both their faces.
The name Inarian would not be muttered, nor would whatever name that man was using these days. To each other, like this, they would simply be Rand and Mat, nothing more or less, no titles or burdens or barriers between them.
Inarian insisted that Fortuona call him Mat as well- in private at least- and she no longer minded doing so, no matter how much her skin itched from the bad luck of it. (In her friskier moods she even went so far as to call him Toy again, which he seemed to not mind at all.) She saw it now as a symbol of their trust, their connection.
Yet it still rankled something in her, that he rejected the honors and accolades she so freely bestowed on him. He was not ungrateful, not really, and he had understood the import, once she explained it. Yet he still did not regard the name she had gifted him with anywhere near the reverence as the one he had as a mud footed farm boy. And a part of her, the part that was still the petulant angry girl who had needed more switchings then any Imperial Princess in memory, couldn’t help but wonder if it was because that was the name Rand al’Thor had known him by.
For a moment Fortuona considered retrieving one of the hidden crossbows she kept secreted about her room- the one inside the tea table would be closest, loaded already with a single short bolt and tipped in powdered peach core already for a fatal blow even if it missed any essential organ- and firing down at the man who presumed to make her husband laugh. With the curtains fluttering around her still she was the next thing to invisible, and it would be easy enough to explain away: Inarian and his lover had not been as discreet as they should. A Deathwatch guard had assumed the Emperor Consort was being threatened, and acted in zealous protectiveness. She could even offer the life of one of her Guards to Inarian’s satisfaction, knowing full well her soft hearted husband would never claim such, would be horrified the very idea. It would be clean, brutal, and final.
Fortuona let the thought roll about in her mind for a bit, as she always did, and then as she always did, she set it aside firmly. It would be a misstep in the long run she knew, cracking something between her and Inarian that would not be easily mended. Cracking him maybe, in his heart. And for what? Silly childish notions like affection and love? She was a woman grown, and arguably the most powerful woman on the planet at that. She could not afford the silly indulgences of children. Her world was bitter reality. It always would be.
She would do her part in the dance instead. Inarian would listen to the sweet whispers to the man who had once been the Dragon and vanish for a few days, and she would hold back his hat and his coat, his scarf and his bag of oddities and keepsakes, to keep a tie to him that he would neither feel nor be able to break. She might burn something, perhaps the coat, to punish him in the meantime (she liked the hat and the scarf on him to much to destroy them) but when he returned she would act as if he never been away. She would not acknowledge his dalliance with his lover in any way, and instead let his guilt and anxiety prick him for her.
Inarian was suspended she knew, between her and the man who had once been the Dragon, each of them holding him by equal force, and with equal gentleness. He was like a fox between two dens. He would run this way, then that, as he willed, answering her call and then his lover’s, divided always between two masters, each playing the game to keep him enticed and entranced, each tempting the attention of dark glittering eyes. Fortuona knew not how the game would end, only that the surest way to loose would be to try and trap him, bind him in some way where he could feel the cord. He would bolt against which ever hand, hers or anyone else’s that tried to do that, and be lost forever.
The only thing worse would be letting him know how much of a claim on her heart he had. He would never take advantage of such- that was not her Inarian, in character or nature. Yet it would frighten him she was sure, if he guessed even half of the depths of her affection for him. The love that burned in her breast for her clever trickster of a husband.
An Empress was not supposed to love anything but her people. Love for an individual was a dangerous madness, a sickness of hot passion that had broken a thousand kingdoms. It made people value one life above the lives of the masses, one person’s opinion over the well being of an Empire. She had not believed it to be real for most of her life. What could one person’s opinions matter more then the fate of nations? The blood of thousands? It was a thing for stories, not bitter realities. Not her reality.
And then she had been stolen away by a fox that made the ravens fly.
So now she walked her fine line, of gentle push and pull and twist and turn. Never showing her hand, never letting the mask break. Never letting her fingers quite leave Inarian’s neck, while never pressing down so hard as to make him bolt.
She kept the secrets of Rand al’Thor, once the Dragon, and she said nothing when Inarian vanished from her life for days or weeks or months, smothered the ache in her rib cage as surely as she smothered the pain from knife wounds and cross bow bolts. The alternative was to loose him forever, or else reveal her weakness, her childishness, the defect within her that should disqualify her from sitting on the Crystal Throne. Neither outcome could ever born.
Better, more prudent, more judicious, to keep her cards to chest, and to play the game for as long as she could manage.
The Empress of Seanchan loved her husband, and their was maybe no greater danger to the Empire in all the world then that.

A Matter of Chance -15
Nandini beheld the imposing stairs leading into the humongous fort gates, accentuated by the plethora of courtiers, palace ladies and priests lining them.
The greatest threat however, was the beautifully coiffed woman standing at the top with a aarthi plate. Aditha’s arm went to her back, fearing she may run.
“Never let them see your fear” she mentally chanted. She loathed their smug self assurance. But she was no longer a nobody-the man escorting her was evidence- and all others seemed to fade.
The ones who derisively called her “princess of the temple pond” through childhood now looked at her with something akin to wonderment.
That woman herself looked at her with amusement. The gall of her!
If that woman was his sister, then she was his future wife. She was in no way her inferior. Nandini made show of needing help, causing her beloved to hold her extra tightly as she walked up the steep staircase, ensuring she leaned into him as much as proper. Her koparakesari Aditha could no longer be overruled by Kundhavai or Sembiyan Madevi now.
She relished seeing the noblewomen who dreamt of marrying her Aditha, greeting her with placid reverence.
The two siblings greeted each other with warmth, relief flooding the younger sister’s face upon seeing Aditha’s confident eyes after years. She then turned to her.
Suppressing her anger and anxiety, Nandini began to greet ilaya piratti Kundhavai devi with a vanakkam . She still has the gall to look at her afterall she’d done to destroy her life!
“A pleasant surprise to see you again, devi” said the imperial princess
“the Lord has sent me where he sees fit” was Nandini’s cryptic reply. Not that you cared when you ousted me was left unsaid.
“You’ve spent years in the temple. I hope you take to court life just as well” said kundhavai as her eyes twinkled. Nandini, not wanting to see her any longer than needed, gently squeezed her darling’s arm and he led her in.
The Emperor and Empress, vague figures for someone who’d never lived in Thanjai, seemed miraculously polite. Surely they must’ve approved what their prodigal daughter and aunt had done?
Perhaps their relief at their son’s return surpasses their distaste for the orphan she mused.
They announced that they’ve decided on a wedding muhurtham falling on the last Friday next month at the palace temple, as the couple nodded their assent.
Aditha’s smile radiated true to his name, lighting up the throne room. The nearby ministers all seemed shocked by the sight. Nandini was privy to many such smiles, but the hearts of his parents rejoiced.
It was the emperor’s sympathetic glances that became the curveball she hadn’t anticipated. With every word, the old couple’s eyes seemed to soften and she didn’t know how to react.
The day was turning out to be far odder than expected.
As she and Aditha walked away, she swore she heard the empress whisper “is that truly..did she resemble her?” to her husband.
She was far too exhausted to think about odd aristocrats for the day. Must make use of my good fortune she decided.
Nandini was growing used to the palace environs and regalia, now that they were no longer tools to oppress her. She saw them as additional benefits to marrying the man she loved. Though still in disbelief deep down, she decided to accept the status quo.
It was the least she and karikalan deserved for the misery they underwent!
She had just made herself comfortable in the chaise lounge, surrounded by maids sorting flowers when a lady-in-waiting hurried in and announced
“Princess kundhavai, accompanied by a courtier, is here!” making Nandini’s eyes pop open.
_------------------_
It was truly an odd day for Nandini, she had entered the palace whose owners had exiled her, as the fiancée of the man who crushed her heart brutally only to revive it later.
He tolerated her coldness and insults, sneaking back into her heart....... and his parents didn’t seem to want to kill her anytime soon.
The woman she never wished to see again was seated in front of her, with her usual self important air.
But most shocking of all was the person accompanying the princess- her Anna thirumalai!
This was not what she had in mind when he described his job as ‘important.
Krishna’s leelas know no end, she mused.
Her discerning fiancé apparently caught wind of his sister’s presence near her chambers, and barged in – ever ready to shield her. He marched over to behind her seat, hands beside her shoulders and glaring daggers at his sister.
Deivame! Everytime she thought to escape kundhavai’s presence, Aditha would arrive giving her a reason to stay.
“Your piety has finally borne fruit, Archagar veetu penne (priest's daughter), you’ve reached your aim”
kundhavai had sworn to make amends for her bullying but old habits die hard.
Her eyes reddened, she dared to mock her thus after causing her downfall. “Indeed ilaya piratti, it is futile to resist His plans no matter how powerful a mortal may be” She shot a sugary smile.
Kundhavai understood that the other woman’s presence is integral to ensure her brother stays in Thanjai and bound to duty, especially now that the subjects have warmed up to her. The princess elicited such resentment that Nandini forgot the presence of her brother till he spoke.
“My dear, I always wished for you to be the second Andal but the stars seem to have something else in store for you. Being married to a man so great is still a good way to work for humanity” thirumalai a.k.a Nambi affectionately said.
She felt betrayed that he worked for the ones she hated. Was his piety a mere façade? Knowing she needed contacts to survive court politics, she donned a pursed smile. “It is a blessing to see you here, Anna”
Aditha, till now a mute bystander, egged his sister and their spy to get to the matter. He didn’t wish for her to feel overwhelmed and flee.
Her Anna took a deep breath and began
“Kanne, in my years here I’ve been privy to many secrets. There are some whom I know better than they do themselves. You have just become one of them”
Here eyes wildly shifted around. What did he mean? Why would she matter- she knew her life’s trajectory well enough!
Aditha sensed her unease and sat beside her, drawing a bangle laden hand onto his lap. He too looked on gravely as his sister.
“What I mean is- I know the circumstances of your birth – your real parents “ her Anna continued.
Nandini let out a mirthless laugh. “What? Is my ancestry worthy of noting now that I’m to marry a prince? They felt no regret abandoning an infant- what does it matter now?”
Even as a child she’d felt a restlessness- a gnawing need to find out her birth parents and question them. After her exile, she desired to find her birth mother and cry in her lap out of misery. But alas!
“My dear sister, karikalan’s soldiers found some shady people eyeing your hut few months back. They lured them away for interrogation. It was this that prompted him to visit the forest.
The people refused to speak up despite threat, bribery and torture. My associates did some digging to reveal that they were pandyan abathudavigal, staking out locations to hide their king before the Cholas attacked”
This unnerved Nandini, but she knew a lone woman living in the woods was prime target. “I thank you for chasing them away but …”
“They wished for you to join them. Your mother was the wife of our emperor by gandharva rites long ago. When he left for Thanjai, she was bereft and tried to end her life unsuccessfully- resulting in loss of memory. She was seduced by Veera Pandyan- her husband’s nemesis- before she regained her memories. Unable to raise her children alone, she gave you away”
Nandini felt her world crash- her father was the exiled pandyan king?
Before she could deny, weep or rage her brain caught onto one word- “children”
“Why the plural” was the only response, despite the storm of emotions.
“A woman who was in dire straits to produce a living child assumed her son to be stillborn. Your mother gave your twin brother to be raised by her”
Silence reigned but the question was obvious.
“Sembiyan Madevi regrets the tumult caused” kundhavai said, looking abashed for the first time.

Forever | Kundavai x Vanthyathevan
Vanthyathevan nervously knocked on the door of the Chakravarthy's chamber. He had wished to meet the emperor and the empress since the whole week. They were staying at the golden palace which Ilavarasare Karikalan had built in Kanchi.
He still remembered what he had said to his Ilaya piratti almost a year ago, just before Manimekali's death. That he will first accomplish and earn something before asking for her hand in marriage. He later found out this made her love him even more.
They have been flirting and talking a lot whenever they used to meet in this past year. He had accomplished a few things with Ponniyin Selvan by his side, and now was crowned the king of the Vanar clan. He had came to know that a Swayamvar was going to be held for Kundavai, and when he had heard this news, he came to a conclusion that he can't wait any longer. They both were of marriageable age and the people of Chola Desam were getting restless to see her marriage.
He had talked about this matter with Ponniyin or rather he had talked about it with him. Arulmozhi really wanted his best friend to marry his Akka too........
He entered the room, the Chakravarthy was sitting on the couch. As he entered the grand chamber, their eyes fell on Vanthyathevan.
"Ah! Vanthyathevan! Arulmozhi said that you wanted to say something to me..."
"He did, didn't he..." He muttered under his breath.
Sundar Chola laughed at this, he was quite fond of this Vallam king. And he hadn't missed the flirting glances and words which him and his daughter had shared whenever they met. The standing with each other during the coronation or different prossetions. He might be an old person now, but his senses or observation skills hadn't detoriated even a bit.
SC pointed at the couch which was in front of him to VV, while still chuckling. Vanthyathevan sat on the couch rather hesitantly, doubting if the man in front of him will kill him for what he was to say.
"Arase........"
"Yes Vallavarayan?".
"Arase.....AreyougoingtoholdKundava'sswayamvaram?
"Excuse me?"
"Vanthyadar, speak slowly dear" Vanama Devi intruded
"I- I was asking -that- um- Are you going to hold Ilavarsi's swayamvar?"
"Yes... I mean it's yet not decided.... We are still thinking..... The people are getting restless... But this Kundavai isn't getting ready to do so, she says she already has decided whome she would marry..." As SC said this, he gave Vanthyathevan a side glace. Vanama Devi too looked at him.
Vanthyathevan could feel his cheeks flushing a little and it would be a big lie if he said that he wasn't scared.
"May I tell you something Arase?" VV said, sweating his head off.
"Yes of course"
"PleasedontkillmebutIthinkthatboykundavaiistalkingaboutisme"
"Vanthyar please speak clearly"
"Yeah... Sir .. please don't kill me but- I think that the person Kundavai is talking about is me...." VV had closed him eyes after the first 3-4 words.
There was a pin drop silence in the room. No one was speaking anything. Vanthyathevan slowly opened his eyes. Sundar Chola was looking at him with an expression he didn't quite understand. It was a mix of happiness, shock, knowingness.. Vanamadevi who didn't had the same expression (except she seemed a little more happier) went near her husband and rested her palm on his shoulders.
"I am asking for your daughter's hand Arase." Vanthyathevan said more confidently than before. A smile appeared on SC's face after that.
_After some time_
Vanthyathevan had ran out of Kanchi the second Chakravarthy had made his decision. He had many thoughts roaming his mind. All he wanted to do, was to reach Pazlayarai as fast as he can to ask her hand. Yep, he had asked her parents for her hand but not her...... It was actually because he was far more scared of her than her parents.
_At Pazlayarai_
Kundavai was looking at the lotuses. There was a long lotus pond (rectangle) by the wall, behind of the balconies in her chamber. It was more of a railing type of passage.
She was thinking about what her father had said about a swayamvar...... A swayamvar.... Where Kings and Princes of different kingdom will come to ask for her hand. She kept thinking about it since her appa had mentioned it. And her thambi had also been teasing her about it, though she had made it clear that she won't ever leave this kingdom. Then the thought of the brave vanar kul warrior or spy who had stolen her heart came into her mind.
Just then Vanathi (who was carrying her nephew) came behind her.
"Akka?" Vanathi called out.
"Yes Kanne? And how are you?"
"Akka... I am fine and you have just asked me this question a few minutes ago! I came here to tell you, that there is a surprise for you..."
"I just worry about you Kanne.... And what surprise?"
A smirk slowly formed on Vanathi's face "I think a special someone.." At this point Kundavai had gotten a clue on who was it.
"Special someone"
"Oh! Common akka! You know who it is! The special someone who stole my Akka's heart!!" As she said this Vanathi sat beside her akka.
"Wha- hea- is it..... Vanthyar?"
"Oooo so you have a nickname for him too now? Oh my" Vanathi
"Oh Parameshwara! Vanathi! It's what your husband also calls him! U never seem to say anything to him!"
"Oh my dear akka.. He learns it from you... And is this what u call him when... You know.... You are alone with him?" With a big teasing smirk on her face.
"VANu! Oh my! I am damn sure this is your harmons speaking! And when is he coming?"
"Oh I was just teasing you akka.... And he has entered the fort already. You look out for him, I am going, I have to see the raj Vaidya.." Vanathi said getting up.
"What? He is here? And be Careful Kanne..."
"Yes Akka..." Kundavai helped Vanathi to get up. Though a blush was still there on Kundavai's face
_After a few seconds_
Kundavai was looking out, with her hands on the railing. Some of her Sakhis were sitting below her balcony. Just then she saw her Vanthyar come in her garden where her Sakhis were talking with each other. She looked at him but he didn't seem to notice her and he ( being Vanthyathevan) started to flirt with the women. It would be a lie if we say that she wasn't jealous.... Or angry.
She was happy that he was here, but that didn't stop her from getting angry. She patiently waited in her balcony for him to arrive.
Kundavai felt some close her eyes from behind, but she didn't react. She felt someone getting close to her, followed by feeling some hot breaths on her neck. This sent shivers down her back. His lips were almost touching her ears when he asked
"Angry with me?" Kundavai wanted to stay strong and angry before him, but all of this was bringing her guard down.
"What else do you expect me to be?" She answered in a steady tone.
"What have I done now? Other than to make you feel butterflies in your stomach?" He said the last part in hushed tone. 'Him and his words!' Kundavai thought to herself.
"Oh! I think you know what you have done."
"What?"
"Tell me one thing "
"Ask me anything priye"
"Sir, so, do you always flirt with other women or today was some special day?" She felt him getting closer to her
"Oh! So you saw me flirting.... That is just a part of my personality."
"So... You flirt with me because of this right?" Kundavai asked shoving him aside and starting to walk off without looking at him. But Vanthyathevan grabbed her wrist stopping her.
"Well offcourse I flirt with you because I can't help it, but you are different Priye-" he pulled her towards him and grabbed her with his other hand on her waist. "- No other women has managed to make me truly love them... And to make me this loyal to them.... And to rob me of my sleep.... And -." He said as they stared at each other.
"Really? How loyal are you Ilavarasare?" She asked cutting him off.
"Tell me what can I do my Ilaya piratti... How can I prove my loyalty to you priye?"
"Jump in the pond"
"What ?" It looked like all the colour had drained out of him
"Can't the brave Vanar kul prince even jump in the water for his.... Love?" Kundavai said all this by getting too much near him, their faces were mere centimetres apart as they looked into each other's eyes. After saying this, she let herself go and started to move away again.
When she was about to reach the end of the passageway, she heard a big splash of water. She quickly turned around, only to see her Vanthyathevan, the brave warrior who battled thousands, failing to keep himself afloat. She had the nerve to laugh at this, it was quite funny ok! She laughed and laughed going her the edge of the pond which was near VV, getting on her knees and offering her hand to him. A smile appeared on his face when he saw her offering her hand to him. He quickly grabbed it and was successful in shutting her laughter as he pulled her down into the water with him.
Fear took over Kundavai as she fell into the water body, only to realise that the water was merely 1-2 foot deep. The princess was quick to realise that Vanthyathevan had tricked her into his trap to get her soaked.
She quickly stood in the water, and so did Vanthyathevan who donned a big fat smile of triumph on his mischievous face. In all this chaos he had been able to grab her other hand too. The look on his face made her smile too. They stared at each other. Again.
"Ilavarasi"
"Yes?"
"I had went to Kanchi" this statement made Kundavai's smile disappear a little.
"Why?"
"I-i had went there to- ehm- I -" He started to get nervous as he started to get to the Main proposal.
"What Vanthyar?" Curiosity was taking a big toll on her
"Um- to ask for your hand in marriage" There. He had said it. There was a pin- forget pin but hair drop silence in the passageway.
"And what did he say?" She asked slowly, looking down, fearing on what he might say.
Vanthyathevan bent down a little to come face to face with her in terms of height.
"He asked me when am I going to take Chola desam's fierce tigress away from them." They were mere centimetres apart. Her eyes quickly went up to meet his. Emotions like joy and happiness were flowing from their eyes. She lunged herself at him and gave him a big hug. Because of her force, They both fell into the water again with a huge splash.
She looked at him with a big smile on her face, they were millimetres apart. Hands still around each other, bodies closely stuck because of the water.
"I love you!" They both said simultaneously making both of them break with laughter. Both of them mad in love. Never to separate. Together. Forever.

NandhininKarikalan~ Chapter 12
•A Call from Motherland•
At the Chola Camp,
Nandhini was taken to the camp by the Chola soldiers. When she reached the camp she was greeted by Malayaman who was waiting for her.
" What is the reason for calling me here Ayya? " Asked Nandhini. " Nandhini I know that what I say will definitely break your heart but please kindly listen," told Malayaman.
" Sure but please tell me what it is first " asked Nandhini.
" As you know that Aditya Karikalan is the crown prince of the Chola empire he has to go back to thanjai" started Malayaman.
" So," asked Nandhini confused. " He can't stay with you here," told Malayaman.
" If he can't stay with me then I would give my life to be with him," told Nandhini proudly. Malayaman shook his head and said, "That's what I don't want "told Malayaman.
"what? Why? " asked Nandhini in confusion. "Yes Devi, I want you to stay away from Karikalan" told Malayaman shocking Nandhini. " But why ? "asked Nandhini in a broken voice
"Nandhini, Karikalan is the crown prince but you are just a poor orphan girl who lives in the house at the Temple's pond. we can't let an orphan girl ascend the throne," told Malayaman. The word "orphan" broke Nandhin's heart. even though her father was alive.
She was told by her father that her mother had died due to illness when she was five years old.
" But I truly love him," Nandhini said in a near whisper. " please Nandhini understand " pleaded Malayaman holding Nandhini's hands. Malayaman left Nandhini's hands and saw her face.
Her face didn't look convinced, Malayaman thought that this had to end in a tough way. " If you don't follow my orders, your friend Urvashi won't be alive the next moment you talk to Karikalan. My soldiers will always be watching you. Careful my child" warned Malayaman.
Nandhini didn't know how to react, one side of her felt sad and another angry. She can't let Urvashi's life fall in danger because of her and Karikalan.
Nandhini thought of telling him her true identity to Malayaman, she thought that this was not the right time to say that to him, all her words would be deaf to his ears.
She remained silent. Malayaman asked the soldiers to leave Nandhini back to her house.
Nandhini was left there by the soldiers. Nandhini was deep in her thoughts that she didn't even notice that the sun had risen.
Nandhini was sleepless the whole night and kept staring at the wall. In the morning, Urvashi came chirping into the Hut.
She called Nandhini's name but Nandhini didn't notice her. So finally, Urvashi shook Nandhini awake.
Nandhini just looked at Urvashi and then stared blankly at the wall. " Akka, what happened?" Asked Urvashi. Nandhini didn't reply. Urvashi repeated " Akka, what happened?", Nandhini stayed motionless.
Urvashi started to shake Nandhini. Nandhini became annoyed and shouted " LEAVE ME ALONE" at Urvashi. Urvashi was startled by Nandhini's words. Tears filled Urvashi's eyes. Seeing that made Nandhini's heartache.
" Urvashi I-I didn't mean that." Nandini tried to convince Urvashi but Urvashi left from there crying. " Urvashi don't go, I am sorry " pleaded Nandhini. But Urvashi didn't listen.
Nandini smacked her forehead and sat down cursing at her foolishness.
By this time Karikalan who was sleeping in the tent also woke up. He went out to see some soldiers outside acting suspiciously. They didn't greet him as usual, and didn't look into his eyes even when some greeted him, Karikalan frowned at them.
"What happened? why are you looking at me like that?" asked Karikalan.
" Nothing ilavarase," told the soldier as they bowed and left from there.
Karikalan walked towards his grandfather who was talking with some soldiers. " Thatha why are some soldiers acting weird?" Asked Karikalan.
His grandfather turned towards him and said " I don't think they are, you are just imagining things karikala".
Karikalan shrugged it off and went to take a bath. He had a long and relaxing bath. His thoughts were only of Nandhini ' What would she be doing?', ' Will she also be thinking about me '.
Only if he knew.....
" Greetings to the prince." Greeted a soldier, Karikalan nodded. " Ilavarase Your thatha wants to discuss something important with you, so he asks for your presence in the camp." Informed the soldiers.
Karikalan sighed in annoyance and got up, he followed the soldier to the tent. Malayaman was pouring a glass of water for Karikalan.
"Did you summon me Thatha?" asked Karikalan as he entered the tent.
Malayaman gestured for the soldiers there to go out. They bowed at him and went out.
"Yes my son, you have to go to Thanjavur tomorrow." Informed Malayaman. Adhita Karikalan froze in shock.
" What are you saying Thatha, I can't leave just like that tomorrow." Told Karikalan who was slowly getting angry.
" I know the reason why you are not agreeing, but it was an order from your father," told Malayaman.
" But we still haven't found who the killer is " told Karikalan in protest. " I will take care of it, my son, you go back to thanjai," told Malayaman.
" I can't leave her alone," Karikalan told to Malayaman. Malayaman very well understood and said, " Take her with you if she agrees to come".
This reply made Karikalan happy he smiled at Malayaman and went towards the horse stable. He took his horse and rode towards the temple.
Nandhini washed her face and went inside the temple to pray. Right at that time Karikalan enters the temple. He saw Nandhini standing in front of the deity and praying.
Nandhini sensed a presence behind her, she very well knew Who it was.
" Someone will see us," told Nandhini.
" Let them see" told Karikalan.
" We shouldn't meet it seems" told Nandhini.
" Why "questioned Karikalan." I am an orphan, I don't even know who my mother is "said Nandhini forcing every word out.
" Who told this? " Asked Karikalan in anger. " Your thatha," told Nandhini as she started walking towards the house.
Karikalan followed Nandhini, she stopped outside the house. " Why are you following me? "Asked Nandhini.
" Nandini please don't ignore me, I understand your situation but-" Karikalan was stopped by Nandhini's interruption.
" No buts karikalare, please don't come to see me here from now on," Nandini said as she entered the house. Karikalan was stopped by Nandhini closing the door shut in Karikalan's face.
Karikalan didn't know how to react he started banging on the door " Nandhini open the door ". Nandini who was on the other side muffled her cries with her hand. Nandini slid down and sat against the door, crying.
Karikalan got tired of banging he felt hopeless. He finally informed the news to Nandhini " I don't know if you are listening or not. But it is my duty to inform you, I will be going back to Thanjai tomorrow, I will be waiting for you till the sun rises tomorrow. I expect you to be there, goodbye Nandhini". Nandhini froze. Karikalan didn't wait for Nandhini's reply he went out of the temple.
Nandhini processed everything after a minute. She immediately opened the door and looked out. " Karikalare!" Screamed Nandhini. She saw Karikalan riding far away from the temple.
Nandhini wanted to run to Karikalan but she knew that it was impossible to do so. Nandini slowly sat down against a pillar of the temple mumbling his name. Tears spilt down her eyes as she watched him leave from there.
It was nearly evening all the people who came to the temple looked at Nandhini weirdly she was sitting there like a statue but the only difference between her and a statue was the tears spilling from her eyes.
___________________________
Urvashi came to apologise for the thing that happened in the morning. She didn't find Nandini in the house. She searched for her everywhere near the pond but didn't find her.
Urvashi finally came inside the temple. She saw Nandhini's State and ran towards her, she hugged Nandhini hugged her back and started weeping out loud as she cried into Urvashi's shoulders. Urvashi herself started tearing up herself.
" He left. He left me Urvashi" Nandhini started wailing like a child. Urvashi took her inside the house. Nandini kept mumbling this as she cried herself to sleep.
That's when a Pandiyan messenger came with a message. Urvashi received the letter and dismissed the messenger. Urvashi opened the letter to read it...
Greetings to the Crown Princess,
Your father's health has been declining day by day, he wishes you to be by his side. Hence he has summoned you back to Madurai. We will expect you in Madurai the day after.
Yours Faithfully,
Periya Pazluvetrayar.
A tear slid down Urvashi's face Knowing that she had to return to Madurai and there was no way she could meet Karikalan tomorrow.
_______________________________
Nandhini woke up the next morning, hearing the news made her devastated, she had to be with her father.
_________________________________
On the next morning, Karikalan waited for her as promised. He had no other option than to leave. His grandfather has been forcing him to start the journey before the sun rose, yet he stayed for his Nandhini, but she never came. Karikalan accepted his faith and started his journey...

More thoughts on the size shifting trooper AU
More than a few of the Mandalorian trainers thought the troopers with the ability to size shift were freaks and made sure they knew that. It lead to some internalized self hate and later issues when having to reveal the ability to their Jedi
Others in the batches were told they were freaks but also remember the look of terror on that same trainers’ face when they first saw them at their full size… they look on their abilities much more kindly
The CC batch of Cody, Bly, Fox, Wolffe, and Ponds are growers. CC batch of Monnk, Baccara, Neyo, Devis, and Fil are growers.
Commander Blackout’s black ops batch are shrinkers
The CTs that got the mutation can’t reach as big of sizes as CCs created with it, more like 28 feet
Whenever a batch is affected by the mutation only a few of them actually end up with the ability
The Kaminoans did experiment with adding the mutation on after the clones were decanted but they found it was only really successful in batches that certain members already were affected by it
They may unintentionally size shift in their sleep, usually not more than a few feet. Aalya has more than once woken up being almost pushed off her bed by Bly because he’s now taking up the whole cot
Thinking about writing a few smaller fics on here just to expand on this because its rotting my brain :P

10 - Padma
When Nandini arrived with lotus flowers, she saw Aditha Karikalan sitting alone on the granite steps of the old abandoned temple pond. His horse or soldiers were nowhere to be seen. Did he walk here? Royal family rarely visited these temples as they are staunch Shaivaites. Sembiyan Madevi paid them regularly and Kundavai conducted poojas on special occasions like Janmashtami.
He hadn't seen her till now. If she sneaks away, he might go away after sometime. But she didn't want to sneak away. She felt like a tree rooted to the ground. She wanted to talk to him. She will . . . she will ask about his scars and war. Don't subjects have the right to talk that much to their rulers?
"Devi, if you worry this much you will grow old in teenage itself"
When did he see her?
"We all have become too old worrying about the war, komagane. What are you doing here? Royal men never come to this temple. Don't you all go to the Siva temple?"
"Yes, but after one have been to war they will start praying to all gods".
Nandini looked around to see if they are alone. She sat on another distant step. Her mind screamed that this is inappropriate and she should run away.
"Why do you always avoid me, Nandini?"
"Who am I to avoid you, ilavarase? You are the son of the Tirupuvana Chakravarty. The earth. . . "
Karikalan interjected, ". . . 'I stand upon is yours'. Isn't it? I don't want to talk about politics now. Tell me about yourself. I have been away for such a long time. You looked so sad when I went away. I thought it was because you'd miss me. But you look sad even after my return. Why?"
"There is nothing like that. Seriously. Nothing at all."
Karikalan didn't look convinced.
"What can I say about myself? We are a priests' family. We do the same things everyday. Stringing garlands, singing songs, lighting lamps, doing poojas, eating food, sometimes we fight each other. . .".
"You and fighting? Impossible". Both laughed.
"I see that you and my sister have become close when I was away. You were like mongoose and cobra when we were children."
"Did you just call me a snake?", Nandini faked annoyance.
"No, I was just . . ."
"It is alright ilavarase. We were immature children then. Ilaya Piratti has become a matured and responsible young lady. She is very generous to us. We will always be grateful".
"You know, I used to taunt her that you are more beautiful than her".
Nandini was shocked. Why would he say such things to his sister? Won't she feel sad if Thirumalai annan taunted her and akka saying that some other girl is more beautiful? No wonder Kundavai hated her.
"I am sorry, devi. Remember, I too was an immature boy then. I thought it was fun. I didn't think of the consequences but I am glad that you both have forgotten all that now".
"You should apologise to Ilaya Piratti". What has taken over her? Will he punish her for this insolence?
"I will"
Nandini smiled. "I have heard poets singing about your valour and ferocity. You have made quite a name for yourself".
The prince looked pleased but it was obvious that something was gnawing at his heart.
"Still the war isn't won. That coward Veera Pandyan escaped again. He is an expert in running off the battle field and hiding. Do you know, Nandini? This war didn't start today or yesterday. My father too fought him when they were young. Everyone thought my father died. He never talks about that period".
"Where is Veera Pandyan? Do you know?"
"Where else? Ezham. We have already sent a force under Kodumbalur Vellar. For some reason, they are too fond of that Veera Pandyan. This time we will teach them a lesson. Anyway, let us talk about something else. You all have grown up. Arulmozhi and sithappa were so little when I went. Now they are little men. Kundavai was a little jealous girl. You all look like new people."
"That's because you were busy with thoughts about war. You must have forgotten our old faces. But all I could think about was you. I prayed so intensely that your face started to appear before me whenever I prayed about something else too".
Ouch, she said too much. She was too overwhelmed that she didn't think before speaking. Inappropriate. Karikalan was smiling so radiantly that he looked like his namesake sun god.
"Ilaya Piratti and Periya Piratti too. All other girls too prayed. Then . . ."
She couldn't finish her sentence. She averted her gaze. She crossed all limits of properiety. Karikalar looked so ecstatic that it seemed as if he was drunk. He took one lotus bud from her lap. She felt like she reached Vaikuntam as his fingers brushed against her arms.
"Komagane, that's a bud. Here, take this big flower".
"No, I like the bud. Do you know why? Your folded hands remind me me of lotus buds. Aha! You are blushing. Now you look pink like a fully bloomed lotus".
He took a flower from her lap.
"Are you taking them for the pooja? For whom?"
"Who else? For the Padmanabhan who sleeps on Palazhi".
"Then, consider this an archana for this thevar. Next time you should bring lamps too."
"You are teasing me."
"No, I am being serious. At least Perumal has Lakshmi Devi for company. I am all alone."
"Where can we find a Lakshmi Devi in this kali yugam, thevare? You will have to adjust with the flowers. If you really want some company, we can search for an Ananthan in the forests."
"Ada kadavule, you are so mischievous."
"I am", Nandini took the lotus flowers and ran away. She could hear his laughter. She turned back after some time to see if he was looking at her. He wasn't. She felt a tiny hinge of disappointment. This was a mistake. She should never meet him alone.
Then he held the lotus bud so tenderly, so close to his heart and kissed the flower. Nandini shivered as if she fell into the pond at midnight.

Who is Goddess Saraswati?
-Agrima Mohan
The etymology of the word, “Saraswati'' comes from the fusion of two Sanskrit words, “Saras” meaning pooling water or sometimes loosely translated to "speech" and "Vati" meaning she who possesses. Originally associated with the river or rivers she is also known as "she who has ponds, lakes, and pooling water" or occasionally "she who possesses speech". In some interpretations, "sara" is translated as "Essence", and "sva" is translated to "Self". Thus, the name Saraswati would translate to "She who helps realise the essence of self" or "She who reconciles the essence (of Parabrahman) with one's self".
Understanding the birth of Saraswati gives us an insight into who she was and what was her purpose in this universe. It also helps us to understand her relationship with Lord Brahma as well.
In the beginning there was chaos. Everything existed in a formless, fluid state. Brahmna, the creator of this universe asked, "How do I bring order to this disorder?"
"With Knowledge", said Devi.
Heralded by a peacock, sacred books in one hand and a veena in the other dressed in white Devi emerged from Brahma's mouth riding a swan as the goddess Saraswati. The goddess uttered, “Knowledge helps man find possibilities where once he saw problems."
Under her tutelage Brahma acquired the ability to sense, think, comprehend and communicate. He began to look at the chaos through the wisdom he had acquired and saw the beautiful potential that lay therein. He discovered the melody of mantras in the cacophony of chaos. In his joy, he named Saraswati as Vagdevi, goddess of speech and sound.
The sound of mantras filled the universe with vital energy, or prana. The cosmos began to acquire shape and structure. The sky was dotted with stars and rose from the heavens, the sea sank into the abyss below and the earth materialised and stood still. Gods became lords of the celestial abodes; demons ruled the nether worlds, humans walked the earth. The sun rose and set, the moon waxed and waned, the tide flowed and ebbed. Seasons changed, seeds germinated, plants bloomed and withered, animals migrated and reproduced as randomness gave way to the rhythm of life.
Brahma thus became the creator of the world with Saraswati as his wisdom.
Saraswati was the first being to come into Brahma's world. It wasn’t long before Brahma began to see her with desire and lust.
Saraswati turned away saying, "All I offer must be used to elevate the spirit, not indulge the senses."
Brahma couldn’t control his amorous thoughts and his infatuation grew. He gave himself four heads facing every direction so that he would always be able to feast his eyes on Saraswati's beauty. Saraswati tried to escape Brahma's gaze, taking the form of a cow. Brahma then followed her as a bull. Saraswati then changed into a mare; Brahma gave chase as a horse. Every time Saraswati turned, Brahma followed her as the corresponding male equivalent. No matter how hard Brahma tried he could not catch Saraswati in any of her forms. The goddess with multiple forms came to be known as Shatarupa. She personified material reality, alluring yet fleeting.
Angered by his display of unbridled lust, Saraswati cursed Brahma, "You have filled the world with longing that is the seed of unhappiness. You have fettered the soul in the flesh. You are not worthy of reverence. May there be hardly any temple or festival in your name."
Undaunted by the curse, Brahma continued to cast his lustful looks upon Saraswati. He gave himself a fifth head to enhance his gaze. Brahma's action motivated by desire confined consciousness and excited the ego. It disturbed the serenity of the cosmos and roused Shiva, the supreme ascetic from his meditation. Shiva opened his eyes, sensed Saraswati's discomfort and in a fit of rage turned into Bhairava, Lord of Terror. His eyes were red, his growl menacing.
He lunged towards Brahma and cut off Brahma's fifth head. The violence subdued Brahma's passion. Brahma's decapitated head seared through Bhairava's flesh and clung to his hand removing all his strength and driving him mad. Saraswati, pleased with Bhairava's timely action, rushed to his rescue. With her gentle touch she nursed him like a child, restoring his sanity. Brahma, sobered by the encounter, sought an escape from the maze of his own desire. Saraswati revealed to him that he would have to conduct a yagna to cleanse himself and start anew. In order to conduct a yagna successfully, the assistance of a wife was needed. Brahma chose Saraswati to be his wife and thus they were reconciled. Thus, we understand the birth of Saraswati, though necessary, was a complex and complicated process, showcasing the much darker aspects of Hindu mythology.

Who has the biggest Slay™? Poll number 3
The Grand Finale! These are the single costumes!
For the final time, grand jury of good taste, judge these costume ideas based on accuracy, the funnies emotional damage, and style points:
Day Thirty: I Can Be Anybody I Wanna Be
If your oc could be anybody, who would they wanna be? Well, for one night only, they can be! It’s time for your oc to dress up!
(Okay, I may have been a little more liberal with this than the official™ challenge guidelines suggest - see Varsha and Kassandra - but still)
80s!KIT KELLEY
Both Kit and Tasha are tired of your gender bullshit and will be as feminine-masculine-androgynous as they damn well please while kicking ass and protecting their friends
ANDROMEDA
LISTEN, just listen. That's canonically his idol pre-transition and the person that makes him feel comfortable in his afab body. She does a flying trapeze number without a safety net, she's described as androgynous and beautiful while being androgynous (the book is from the 50s, mind you, and takes place way earlier, around the turn of the century), she wears a silver corset with wings... the whole scene is GLORIOUS, go read it!
NIGHTCRAWLER
Circus artist, a little bit demonic, definitely a bastard by what I can tell... perfect
CHARLIE DRAKE
He would have such a field day annoying everyone
VARSHA DEVI
The Little Mermaid not as in Disney's Ariel but as in the fairytale version. Will she find her happy ending?
CHARLOTTE INARI
Look, she's dressing up as her big sister, the (probably) mass murderer <3
AKAITO CORALINE
I just think it would be neat :)
K'RALA
It's Vulcan-ception! T'Pol is one of K'Rala's idols and someone they would have loved to meet.
KASSANDRA HARGREEVES
Now, listen, she's literally named after her. Both of them know things others don't but can't share that information with anyone - Kass Hargreeves because she physically can't and Princess Kassandra because nobody believes her. It's about the powerlessness in possessing a supernatural power, about the betrayal of trust, about the despair.

Promise | Kundavai x Vanthiyathevan OS
Anonymous prompt "I can do anything for you" "Then jump in the water"
"Devi, wait for me" Vanthiyathevan called out but his words fell into deaf ears as Kundavai doubled her speed in walking through the corridor. True, she was an intelligent woman and had a better sense that beauty is not immortal . Still, she couldn't help but fume in anger when she was left to wait near the temple while he was flirting with Nandini - Nandini of all people!
She often prided herself in not falling for the evil trap of jealousy all through her life. Even when her Anna accused her of driving Nandini and her family out because she was jealous of Nandini's beauty and intelligence, she was able to deny it outright because as she said, she had better reasons. At that time, she was not thinking as his sister but as the Ilaiya Piratti - about how chaotic the citizens would get if the crown prince married an orphan girl, how the people would accuse the royal family of tarnishing the rules instead of upholding them and most of all, if people blame her for not following her Patti's order and acting on her own had she supported her Anna.
But now? Now there was no throne to protect or royal values to uphold. Just her and her heart.
"Devi" the call came from behind again and she whirled around to see Vanthiyathevan grinned at her. "I'm sorry Ilaiya Piratti but you look even beautiful when you are angry. "
"Yes I am angry. What can you do about it?" She asked in return
"I can do anything for you Devi" Vanthiyathevan said sincerely
"Anything? " Kundavai pressed "Think very carefully Vanthiyar. Empty promises do not suit your attitude"
"Anything Devi" She knew he wasn't one to back down. So she lead him to the garden pond and pointing to the water she said "Then jump"
Vanthiyathevan's smile vanished. Was she teasing him? Doesn't she know his fear of water? Looking at his bewildered expression. Kundavai continued to chide him " This is why I told you not to make empty promises" Saying this she turned around and was half-way out of the garden when she heard a large splash. She tried to tell herself she imagined it and what she feared for didn't happen just now but when one of her companions immediately started screaming "Ayyo, Vanthiyathevan jumped into the pond" she made her way back to the site at double speed.
Mercifully the pond wasn't deep and Vanthiyathevan was already able to climb onto the edge of the pond and was coughing when she sat near him on the ground.
"You idiot! Why did you do that? What if something had happened to you? Do you think I'll be able to live without you?" She said with tears gathering in the corner of her eyes. Vanthiyathevan looked at her with surprise for a minute before smiling wholeheartedly.
"Now I know what was the reason behind your anger Devi"
She was only able to whisper a "What?" before she felt his arm around her waist pulling her into a hug much to her surprise and that of her companions who giggled and left the couple to their privacy.
"Kundavai" She got goosebumps when she heard him address her in her given name "No one can ever take me away from you. I am yours"
Million thoughts were flying in Kundavai's mind. What will they do if someone else found them in this comprising situation? How will she explain his drenched form and her wet clothes? How was he able to read her like an open book after one look at her face? But amongst all those thoughts one stood out in prominent. ' Live for yourself too once in a while. Enjoy this moment instead of ruining it with irrelevant musings'. She closed her eyes and put her arms around his neck, snuggling further into the hug and whispering in his ear "I am yours too".
