This is an appreciation post for Adam Colbeck-Dunn's Grantaire (24/25 West End cast) and his PANIC ATTACK AND BREAKDOWN during the barricades.
His Grantaire is so wide-eyed during Red & Black, he's so smiley and he jumps around the stage like a lamb in spring. He tries desperately to get Enjolras' attention, and he watches him so intently. And then he loses that innocent, child-like smile the moment it's announced that Lamarque has died. He grabs hold of Gavroche and shields him away from the others with so much concern.
And then there's the barricades...
Not only does he breakdown after Drink With Me and push Enjolras' hug away, he openly sobs in Gavroche's arms before sliding down against the wall to calm down.
He, again, scoffs and pushes Enjolras away after Eponine dies, and sits on the bench beside Marius to comfort him (stroking his shoulder and telling him he's sorry).
And when the battle starts again, he situates himself on the bench and watches everything around him with so much disbelief and pain on his face. He sits there still until Gavroche runs across the barricade, and then he jumps up and SCREAMS "no" at the top of his lungs. He's reassured by Marius and he is so relieved when Gavroche is okay ... until he isn't. And then he visibly pales and carries Gavroche's body so gently to his resting place, and delicately lays him down on the floor.
AND THEN HE CURLS UP ON THE FLOOR BESIDE GAVROCHE IN A FETAL POSITION AND JUST SOBS AS THE FIGHT STARTS AGAIN. And stays there until Marius is shot, which is when he gets up and rushes over to him ... where Enjolras is too. When Enjolras hugs him, his posture visibly changes and he holds onto him with so much desperation, like he's refusing to let go. When Enjolras runs to the top of the barricade, Grantaire watches in despair from the side of the stage, pinned against the wall by his anxiety and fear.
As his friends start to die on the barricade, he's struggling to breathe and he's frozen in his spot, trying desperately to go and help his friends but so visibly conflicted. He's shaking and he's hitting himself because he thinks he is being a coward. He's having a full blown panic attack and breakdown as Les Amis fight ... and then he lets off the most painful scream and hits himself in the head because he's so frustrated at himself when Enjolras dies ... and this appears to be the push he needed, so he races up to the top of the barricade screaming "you bastards" really softly to go and die alongside the one person he loves more than anything.
I'm never going to get over it.
Adam Colbeck-Dunn is the most beautifully painful Grantaire I have ever, ever seen and I am never recovering from this portrayal.

Do you ever think about poor Nik, having learned English from textbooks and maybe some American media here and there and all that, suddenly being faced with Brits / specifically John Price, pronouncing things somewhat differeng and having all those British terms that Nik has never heard of. Why the fuck are Brits putting blankets on pigs and why is John asking him whether he's ever had that!!
The man knows eight (8) languages, so it's likely it's not even his second language, but his fourth or fifth. Mad intelligent, but yeah, you're so right.
I work with a few foreign nationals who have told me that, sometimes, speaking to me is like hearing English through a carnival mirror; the words are familiar, but what the hell do they mean in that order? It's usually when my brain has switched to Jack Mode out of professional mode, and I am absolutely not paying any attention.
I can imagine Price does the same. Same way that Johnny tones down his accent, I headcanon that Price toned down his Liverpudlian twang, but sometimes he'll absolutely slip up, and Nik'll hear him use "devoed", "clobber" and other weird phrases that he's pretty sure contain words that aren't in the Bible.
There's only one person who can understand Price when he goes Full Liverpool: Ghost, who goes Full Mancunian in response, and Nik's sitting there while they're...
P: Gonna jib this off, and go fer bevvy and scran on me bill, unless yer down, la?
G: Gaggin' fer a pint, but can't, 'm brassic, got reports to finish and that. Can I cadge a ciggy?
P: Naw, I've only got abar four bifters left, like.
G: Ah, yer dead snide, sir.
Nik, looking at Gaz for help, who is just smiling like the Cheshire Cat because he's packing cockney rhyming slang up his sleeve, so Nik better buckle the fuck up.

reading everyone’s thoughts on the london special and marinette’s actions have given me a serious case of deja vu in relation to the s5 finale, here’s why
a very very VERY common reaction from the fandom i saw to the finale was “why are the writers letting gabriel get away with being a hero why isn’t he being held accountable horrible finale horrible writing i hate this show etc etc etc”
before i share my thoughts on this for like the thousandth time i just wanna mention i DID cry during the finale, partly because i was in shock and also because i HATED it. but now i genuinely believe it was one of if not the smartest thing the ml writers have ever conjured up and i just. fucking love it. (point is: i understand disliking it. that was me at some point, until i began to consider the implications of the “ending”)
similarly, a reaction i’ve seen to the london special (mainly from ml salters) is “why would the writers let marinette lie to the world when it’s so clearly morally wrong she’s such a horrible person she needs to be held accountable blah blah blah”
something both the s5 finale and the london special share is that THE ACTIONS THAT TAKE PLACE IN BOTH. ARE NOT MEANT. TO SIT WELL WITH THE AUDIENCE
NO writer on ml is trying to convince a fan that “gabriel was actually a hero because he made one selfless decision (that wasn’t even that selfless?????)”. NO writer on ml is trying to convince a fan that “marinette is completely right for hiding the truth about gabriel from not only adrien but also the whole world!!!!!! no one should ever find out!!!”
the entire point of the finale and special is to make the viewer uncomfortable, as we watch marinette sit with her questionable choices, watch adrien refer to his father as a hero and watch their class throw a party. none of this is supposed to make us feel at peace with the way this arc has concluded.
what people seem to be missing is that even if the s1-s5 arc has ended, the s6 arc is just beginning, CENTERED AROUND THE CHOICES THAT HAVE MADE US AS THE AUDIENCE FEEL SO UNCOMFORTABLE!! you’re completely ignoring the way the plot is set up if you think the writers are going to neglect gabriel’s storyline, because it is far from over.
i think it’s also important to mention that neither marinette nor adrien are at peace with what’s happened (even if that was implied during the s5 finale—the london special has provided us with this new information on their emotional statuses). marinette is clearly being eaten alive by guilt, seeking confirmation throughout the entire special that protecting adrien from the truth was the morally correct decision. adrien was obviously affected by his father’s death (contrasting the idea that he just “threw a party” without any emotional backlash), and will undoubtedly learn to grapple with his conflicting feelings on gabriel’s character throughout s6 (he sacrificed himself??? but he abused me??? but he saved ladybug and nathalie????? but he apparently assisted monarch?????)
POINT IS
no one is meant to be satisfied with the way things are in the miraculous universe at the moment. you aren’t supposed to want the truth about what really went down during recreation to stay hidden. if you feel uncomfortable with the current situation our main characters are in, GOOD! please stop the discrediting the writers, because your discomfort means they have done their job well.

Ever since I was aware of the two endings of Nemesis, I was always pretty certain that Shaw was going to kill Cups. That’s not because I think the Revival ending is worse, innately, I love the tragedy of it & the potential for healing there - but just because I think it would always be worse for Shaw, specifically.
More than anything else, he’s always been a character that’s motivated by guilt, to me. Shaw blamed himself for his daughter’s death way beyond the point where he could logically justify it, knowing what happened. Any world in which Lenore Shaw returns, I feel like that guilt just keeps going. He needed an ending, clear and defined. The ‘what if’s are going to haunt him for a while, undoubtedly, but… Cups would’ve done this to more people, if it had the chance.
Could Shaw really justify taking his own happiness with the knowledge he could be damning even more people to the same grief he went through? No. Even more so, I don’t think he could bear Lenore not remembering him. I think that would cement the fear he’s always had as fact; that he’s a fundamentally selfish person, and that selfishness has harmed everyone he’s ever loved. That’s the path that leads him down the same, isolating mistakes that got Shaw to where he was when he started: alone in a prison cell.
So… he let Cups die. It still feels like a selfish choice, to Shaw. Choosing his own revenge over his daughter - but really, that’s not true. And I think he’ll realize that one day.
When I first started playing Nemesis, I thought this moment would feel more like a hollow victory than it did. The sort of ending where despite getting what he wanted done, Shaw’s still left as alone as when he started - but that’s not true either. Despite my expectations he’s really made a ton of connections in London, thanks to the community, so this whole thing feels so much more hopeful than I thought… because, well, he’s not alone. He’s got so many people there for him. Be it the seven closest who he wrote to, or anyone else who’s shown him kindness… Shaw has something to go back to in a way that I didn’t really expect him to ever get.
For the next while, I’m gonna be giving Shaw a bit of a break - focusing in on other characters and stuff. He’ll be back to do the railway in a little while, don’t worry, this sad man’s adventures aren’t over. But for now, he has an ending. A clearly defined one, at that. Now he gets to begin again.

tried watching the ml london special but MAN does this show continue to give me such conflicting feelings
because like...if i ever found out my girlfriend lied to me that my dad hadnt been akumatizing people and recklessly played around with peoples lives - including mine - to get my mom back, and severely emotionally neglected me during all that time and had instead been some martyr who defeated the big bad to save the world (instead of BEING the one who needed to be defeated) i would never be able to forgive her no matter her kind intentions
im not even trying to blame marinette here because holy fuck what would you DO if you were in her situation?? but it definitely sours their romance for me
ill wait and see until more episodes air, maybe ill change my mind, who knows? but for now i dont feel...great... about it
