Obsessed with Weyoun having an incredibly stereotypical gay accent in the German dub of DS9. Dubbing production team clocked him immediately
#star trek#ds9#deep space nine#weyoun#recommend that if you have access to the German dub you listen to his voice#it’s insane#side note I still can’t find a way to get my hands on the German dub outside of Netflix#deep space 9#German#deutsch

funfact about the german dub of venom 2 & 3:
cletus from let there be carnage & martin from the last dance have the same voice actor, which is just so funny to me bc wdym in the german canon of that universe there were two guys with EXACTLY the same voice for some time lmao??
(that was the fun fact if you don’t want me yapping about german voice action feel free to scroll)
one thing you need to know the about german dubbing market is that while it’s amazing and while we actually have a lot of incredible voice actors, it still feels like everyone is voiced by the same 10 guys all of the time bc there are just some voice actors who seem to have been in almost every. single. big. franchise. and one of them is thomas nero wolff (great guy, love his voice), who is the usual voice actor for characters played by both woody harrelson (cletus) & rhys ifans (martin). so it makes sense that he would voice them both (after all, they’re not in the same movie) but i still find it incredibly funny that they wouldn’t use a different voice actor for rhys ifans this time lol.
anyhow, here‘s a super super small selection of characters thomas nero wolff has voiced in the german dubs bc i think it’s fun:
gargamel from the 2011/2013 smurf movies
logan/wolverine in basically everything except for x1
p.t. barnum
det. mark hoffman
grand admiral thrawn
mycroft holmes (bbc)
spike (notting hill)
mr gold from once upon a time
haymitch abernathy
james norrington
dr facilier (only the dialogue, not the songs)
gobber (httyd)
chief tui (moana)
luke danes
grandmaster in what if…?
stanford pines
this is maybe a fifth of the roles he has done, but most of these are the ones that have had a huge impact on me growing up (especially haymitch, gobber, dr facilier, mycroft, mr gold, & logan). as a kid, it was definitely equally fun & confusing to always recognize the voice of a character from somewhere else!!!
anyways, that’s thomas nero wollf for y’all, he‘s definitely one of my favorite german voice actors, his voice is just so recognizable!! i kinda love that he voices both haymitch & logan bc idk, they’re both annoyed alcoholics who go all soft around the edges for a random teenage girl. he does them both so well that i watch hunger games in german for comfort sometimes lmao.
ok that’s it for now hmu if you want more german dub yapping

Currently thinking about the Arcane German dub’s incredible use of the phrase “Im Stich lassen” and going feral. You don’t understand!! That phrase can mean both to abandon someone and to betray someone and the dub uses that one phrase where the English dub used different words!!! And so when Silco says “ich werde dich nie im Stich lassen“ he’s both saying he’ll never betray Jinx and that he’ll never abandon her!!! AAAAAAHHH

Ok, so I just watched Across the Spiderverse for the first time, and I'm absolutly blown away, but I have to rent about a thing here that only really makes sense to Germans.
We dub everything. Movies, Tv, if it's released in Germany, it's dubbed. (Anime not neccessarily, and games often not)
So we grow up watching mostly American media, where everyone speaks German and we are used to that. The dubs are of high quality, so there's no echo, the lipsync is mostly ok, everything is mixed well, the translations are accurate, actors are dubbed by mostly the same voice actor each time. We're good at this.
When a child grows up with dubs they at one point sooner or later understand that those people on the screen are not speaking German (usually around the time when they realize flashbacks are not filmed when the actors were younger) and they will quickly move past it. It's fridge logic. Don't think about it, it's fine, it's convenient. Immersion is the word for it I think.
Sometimes it get's pretty weird tho, especially when there's characters speaking different languages. Famously the TV show heroes dubbed both english and japanese, so it wasn't clear why there were communication difficulties. But mostly it's fine. For an example of an American film doing the same thing in English, think of how in Hunt For Red October the Russian characters speak English. They obviously don't, it's a film trick for the sake of the audience. But you're immersed, so it doesn't matter.
Sometimes funny things happen when you think about it like how in Ratatouille both in the English and German dub many characters have a French accent. So what language do they speak in-universe? French with a French accent?
Anyway, that's not what I wanted to talk about.
Sometimes the translators do a bad job and try to localize things that don't need localizing. In Across The Spiderverse when the teacher reads Miles' grades, she says he has an "1 in Deutsch". Translating the American grading system into the German one is mostly ok, it's standard, but obviously in the English original Miles is not learning German. He has English class, like every student. And the dub should have trusted the viewers to know that American characters in New York City have English class. But no, the word "Deutsch" appeared and broke the immersion. Later Miles mentiones "Speutsch" which is suppost to be a version of Spanglish, but it's German and Spanish instead. The moment is over before I really noticed, but nonetheless.
The Spanish is left Spanish, funnily enough.
It's 2023, people know that Americans speak English mostly.
I didn't spend 3 years at university studying translation to not have strong opinions on this.

the German dub is so silly 😭 I'm watching it to brush up on my German and it is such a treat.
If you are having a bad day you should know that in the German dub of Good Omens, instead of saying "tickety-boo," Aziraphale says "supey-dupey," hope that helps

I am so tired of subtitles not matching the audio! I have APD and I need subtitles to hear properly. Especially when watching a movie that was originally in English, in literally anything else. Deutsch is my comfort language and the subtitles NEVER match. Once I was having a bad sensory day so I put on the German dub of Encanto, and the subtitles were so different from the audio that I cried. Why must they cut corners like this?
