Guide to the Zodiac: The Bard of Rage
"Good people sometimes wish bad things. Good people try bad things, don't you? Good people even do bad things, Once in a while, we do.” - Fred Rogers
Names & Epithets:
The Mirthful One; The Bard of Many Colors; Lord of the Carnival, Our Lord of Detroit, The Ringmaster, He Who Looses the Wolf, The Laughing Messiah, The Old Goat (often but not always derogatory)
Symbolism:
The Symbol of the Bard of Rage, written instead of his name, is ♑, the sign of Capricorn.
The Sigil of Rage is a stylized face with exaggerated eyebrows.
The colors associated with the Bard of Rage are pink and purple, and his sacred color is indigo.
Other symbols associated with the Bard of Rage are circus tents, graffiti, sugary bubbling drinks (which are referred to as “Faygo” in this context regardless of brand), the masks of comedy and tragedy, mind-altering substances of all sorts, and above all, clowns.
Appearance/Portrayal:
The Bard of Rage is an inhumanly tall and lanky man, crowned with a wild mass of long hair and two long, twisting horns. He always paints his face, black outlining his eyes and mouth against a white background. He generally is said to keep a calm and laid-back, even lazy demeanor. In anger, the scleras of his eyes are said to turn orange, which is often depicted in art.
The Bard almost always wears his godhood or a variant thereof in purples, pinks, and blacks. His godhood is unique in that it includes a prominent codpiece, or sacred phallus, a symbol of both procreative power and of the wild Id.
Domain/Associations
The Bard is associated with many concepts, but all lead back to the idea of want . It is common to question how a god whose domain is dubbed Rage came to be more concerned with Desire, but this is because the Bard, like the Prince, sets himself against the Aspect of his domain, rather than aligning with it. In the Zodiac Cosmology, Rage is considered a form of inhibition, emotions repressed and bile bitten back, and the Bard’s role is to unleash it.
The Bard’s influence lies at the base of the spine and the seat of the brainstem, breaking down the higher, outer shell of the self and releasing whatever pains or pleasures lie within. The Bard sings to the dark recesses of the soul, and the soul answers.
The Bard is, naturally, a god of drama and theater, and stylized depictions of his smiling and frowning faces are mounted above stages large and small, worldwide. The earliest dramas of ancient history were said to be plays of catharsis, whereby the deepest desires of the audience were played out in a safe, controlled manner. This is a subtle influence of the Bard.
The Bard is a patron of addicts of all kinds, soothing pain under clouds of impulsive behaviors and mind-altering substances. He is the last resort of the ruined, the final salve of those with nowhere else to turn.
The Bard is also associated with virility. This is self-explanatory and does not require elaboration.
Major Holiday(s):
There are two main holidays associated with the Bard of Rage. Hallowhonk is the more widespread, celebrated throughout the world on the last day of Capricorn. On this holiday, children dress up as what they want to become or as what they wish to defeat (usually symbolically), then accost their adult neighbors for sweet treats. Refusing to give treats or decorate with intricately-carved and lit vegetables is often grounds for mild vandalism. In the upper midwest of North America, and in other Juggalist enclaves, Hallowhonk can even become violent, as children are allowed free rein to steal from and fight each other for treats, masked in anonymity. Rule of law is temporarily paused on these occasions. In some cultures, this same approach is extended to adults on Hallowhonk, though such practices are rare and becoming rarer, especially after the publication of exposé documentaries such as The Purge .
Another holiday is the Festival of Fools, primarily celebrated on the 4th of Capricorn in Ireland and in Irish-American communities. On this day, the “King of Fools” - usually a member of the lowest social class - is elected and crowned with a jester’s cockscomb. The city’s upper echelons (usually a mayor or governor, or the like) act for the day as the King’s servant. The King then makes decrees, and these decrees are, for the duration of the day, as law. This upending of the social order comes alongside much feasting and drinking and games.
Churches and Cults:
The Congregation of the Dark Carnival - often referred to amongst layfolk as the Clown Church, or Clurch - is the central structure for Bard-focused worship throughout the known universe. Little in the Dark Carnival is standardized, except for the central tenet of radical and complete freedom. In many Carnivals, this shakes out in practice into a rule of “might makes right” that repulses some and attracts others. However, this is not universally the case. In particular, Carnivals that the Bard himself visits frequently become less dictatorial and adhere more closely to the ecstatic and hedonistic atmosphere that the Bard reportedly enjoys. Only the most devout usually stay in these Carnivals for more than a day or two.
Devotees of the Dark Carnival, often loosely defined as those who visit more than once, are called “Juggalos.” Proselytizers for the Dark Carnival, and those who spread its Mirthful word, are given the additional title of “Ninja.”
Earth’s permanent installation of the Dark Carnival proper is located in Detroit, and has, over time, metastasized over much of the city, but there are also smaller, traveling Carnivals that visit different cities for a period of days or weeks, then pack up and move on.
In many countries the Dark Carnival has a political tent called the Insane Clown Party. It is a notable third party in the United States, especially in the state of Michigan, where many members of the ICP have been elected to city- and state-level government, including several governors. On the national level, however, the ICP has not come close to major success since 1992, when Murderbitch Pierrot earned nearly 22% of the popular vote and won the state of Michigan.
Prayer and Worship:
When one prays to the Bard, it is traditional to do so in a tent, or at least a pitched blanket. It is commonly reported that one can gain a small favor from Bard with a novel joke, gift, song, or other form of entertainment, but there is little he has not yet seen.
Partaking of mind-altering substances is a sacred act of worshiping the Bard, and protected entheogens exist in most cultures. Faygo-branded drinks, referred to as “wicked elixir” by the Juggalos, are treated as a sacrament with or without psychoactive additions.
Interestingly, cursing the Bard during prayer is not generally considered an insult to him.
Lore:
The Bard is well known as one of the most wildly irregular of the gods, leading to the coining of the term “Capricious,” after his star sign. He can be friendly, even familiar, with his congregants, and generous with blessings and gifts. But he is also known to fly into terrible rages and monstrous fits of violence. It is reportedly very difficult to tell what offenses may provoke the Bard’s temper, and which he may simply shrug off. However, many agree that the worst thing one can be, in his eyes, is unfunny.
In the Zodiac cosmology, the Bard is a destroyer and an upsetter of plans, a wild card who may turn on his allies at the drop of a hat, but who also can turn the tide of a battle with a sweep of his arm.
It has not gone unnoticed that the Bard and the Maid are the only two of the gods to paint their faces in all public appearances, but the reasons behind this are unknown. Some stories portray them as friends, allies, or even lovers, but the nature of their relationship is unclear.
Just as many stories link the Bard and the Knight, positing that many of the Bard’s excesses are in fact attempts to tempt the Knight into releasing his bonds, but whether this is done out of an enmity towards the Knight or out of a genuine wish to see the Knight relax is unknown.
Public Relations:
The Bard is a very public god, and unlike many of the gods, the Bard spends almost all his time on Earth. The reasons why are unknown. He is nearly always to be found at some Dark Carnival event, if not in Detroit itself then in one of the traveling Carnivals. He interacts with his Congregation in regular showings, accepting offerings, giving gifts, and eroding the inhibitions of every soul for miles around.

A new force has arrived on Detroit’s film scene.
One month after moving to the city, independent California filmmaker Tom E. Brown has hit the ground running excited to boost Detroit’s film community, which has suffered the recent loss of three Indie theaters in Metro Detroit. The freshly appointed Detroit Institute of Arts Detroit Film Theater board member said he has his eye on growing the local film community and pushing for a return of the state’s film tax credit.
During a free Sunday screening of his 2016 film “Pushing Dead” at the Senate Theater and Q&A for World AIDS Day, he announced plans to film a sequel in Detroit.
“I’m going to try to see if I can do anything to help bring the film incentives back, because that would be nice for Detroit,” added Brown, who bought a house in East English Village.
The bipartisan Multimedia Jobs Act would create a transferable tax credit of up to 30% for Michigan-based multimedia projects. The bill was co-sponsored in 2023 by John Roth, R-Interlochen, and Jason Hoskins, D-Southfield. Currently, more than 35 states have a multimedia or film incentive. For seven years Michigan had a film credit offering up to 42% rebate of filmmakers’ in-state production costs, but it ended in 2015 amid criticism that taxpayers weren’t benefitting.
Roth’s office did not immediately return a request for comment on the bill.
Opponents of the package, from teacher unions to Republican lawmakers, say the state can’t afford film subsidies amid large public infrastructure needs. In November, the Great Lakes Gun Rights nonprofit told Republican lawmakers in a post to X, formerly Twitter, that the package was “anti-gun” by giving tax dollars “to liberal anti-gun Hollywood elites to produce liberal anti-gun programs in Michigan.” The tax program would entail $2 billion in credits over 10 years.
Others, like the Michigan Film Industry Association, have argued that the money would be well spent by boosting the local economy and tourism by $6-$8 billion in direct spending in the first 10 years, and creating new jobs, while decreasing the population loss of college graduates.
The bills were tentatively scheduled for a vote in the state House last month, but no action was taken amid attendance issues and lingering concerns over the proposal. Time is running short to get the bills passed this session, as lawmakers will break for the year in late December.
Brown’s “Pushing Dead” is a comedy that focuses on an HIV-positive writer who is suddenly dropped from his health plan for earning too much after depositing a $100 check in his bank account. The film stars James Roday, Danny Glover and Robin Weigert.
Brown, 57, has made short films for nearly four decades that have been featured at the American Museum of Natural History, the Walker Art Center and the Guggenheim. “Pushing Dead,” supported by the Sundance Institute and Rockefeller Foundation, screened at more than 50 film festivals winning 10 best-feature and audience and jury awards.
The “Pushing Dead” sequel, which Brown said is 25% written, is one of several films he hopes to shoot in Detroit. The movie will open with a couple pushed out of San Francisco who land in Detroit, and features a scene in the city. Brown said he has already received verbal promises of financial support from locals, which is “rare” for an Indie film.
In San Francisco, films are ranked by factors like local jobs and diversity and entered into a lottery for tax incentives. Depending on whether Brown wins San Francisco’s film lottery and how Michigan’s legislation advances, Brown said he would also like to film the movie “American Dog,” in Detroit. That film, he said, is about “an unhinged lesbian cop in backwater America” who will be played by Margaret Cho.
If the Multimedia Jobs Act were passed Brown said it would make filming American Dog in Detroit “more appealing” because it’s increasingly challenging to raise funds for film. But regardless, Brown said he’ll film in Detroit, and is passionate about doing so.
“It’s a lot of things that come into play when you’re trying to raise money for a movie, but I will absolutely make movies in Michigan,” he said. “I like the idea of setting this little indie with the same characters, with the two main characters from ‘Pushing Dead’ in Detroit, just because it’s such a beautiful city. Everywhere you look it’s just filmic and gorgeous.”
Last year, the city’s Detroit Film Office authorized 83 productions to film, according to a BridgeDetroit FOIA.
The subject matter of Brown’s film is particularly relevant to Detroit, where HIV rates are four times higher than the rest of Michigan.
On Sunday, a post-screening panel featuring Brown, Weigert and LGBT Detroit Executive Director Nzere Kwabena focused on the film production process and AIDS.
In Detroit, approximately 766 people per 100,000 residents have HIV, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services 2023 HIV Prevalence Report.
Brown, who was diagnosed with HIV 40 years ago and initially given three years to live, said World AIDS Day is a happy day for him now because it means he’s alive. World AIDS Day, on Dec. 1, was first recognized in 1988.
“Pushing Dead” is available for free streaming with a public library card on Kanopy or on various paid streaming services. The timeline for the sequel is unknown, but expected after Brown wraps production on “American Dog.”
(via DannyG)
#tom e brown#pushing dead#pushing dead 2#american dog#exciting new about that pushing dead sequel even though it'll probably be another decade before we get to see it#a bit confused that it is apparently about a “couple” but tom also talks about the “two main characters” being the subject of the film#not sure if he misspoke or the interviewer just misquoted what he said since james' and robin's characters are most certainly not a couple#also why am i not surprised that the michigan gun lobby is rallying against film incentives as being “anti-gun”#only in america#anyway#very exciting

Andiamo a scoprire quali titoli ci interesseranno maggiormente fra cinema e TV!
CINEMA
youtube
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (Netflix - 3 luglio)
youtube
Horizon: An American Saga - Parte 1 (Cinema - 4 Luglio)
youtube
Deadpool & Wolverine (Cinema - 24 Luglio)
SERIE TV
youtube
Star Trek: Prodigy stagione 2 (Netflix - 1 Luglio)
youtube
Those About to Die (Prime Video - 19 Luglio)
youtube
Lady in the Lake (Apple TV+ - 19 Luglio)
youtube
Snowpiercer 4 (AMC - 21 Luglio [USA])

One year ago, with Detroit Evolution stars Maximilian Koger, Tiare Solis, and Michael Smallwood, we shot a queer comedy short film called Seven Deadly Synths.
It's been a strange and awkward road since then - we finished the film and sent it to a couple festivals. We had full intention of sharing it with Patrons last fall, and that by now, the public would have it too.
But things happen. Not only was Detroit Evolution all consuming of my time, which prevented me from adding in some desired changes for web release, but we also were put in the unfortunate circumstance of having a film starring another actor we no longer wished to support or platform (and we don't have the money to reshoot it with Christopher Plummer).
Now that I finally have time to fix these issues with elegant and clever solutions, as I said in January, Seven Deadly Synths will finally come to the web this August. Back then, the plan was for it to be a Patreon exclusive at first.
But today I can announce that Synths will actually be coming to the public, on YOUTUBE, in August.
We live in a world where film festivals and public screenings are not guaranteed anymore, and actors - who are out of work and constantly having the releases delayed for projects they poured their hearts into - deserve to have something to share this year.
We hope you look forward to our fun, wild, queer, comedy fantasy short film about synthesizers and revenge coming to everyone in just three months. ✌️🌈

DREAM GIRL
June 23, 1947
On this date in 1947, Lucille Ball opened in DREAM GIRL, produced at McCarter Theatre, Princeton, New Jersey for the Princeton Festival. The comedy had originally opened on Broadway on December 14, 1945, starring Betty Field and written and directed by Elmer Rice (then married to Ms. Field).
In 1937, Lucille Ball had performed on the McCarter Stage in the play HEY DIDDLE DIDDLE opposite Conway Tearle. The play launched a short tour headed to Broadway, but Tearle’s illness forced it to close in Washington DC, postponing Lucille’s Broadway debut. That would have to wait until 1960′s Wildcat.
Lucille Ball was the Queen of Comedy long before television. In this DREAM GIRL program bio, she continues the fib that she was born in Butte, Montana, finding it more exotic than Jamestown, NY.
Ball played the role of Georgina Allerton, a daydreaming bookshop owner. Subsequently, she toured the show, playing Boston, Detroit, Toronto, San Francisco, Oakland, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.
SYNOPSIS ~ Twenty-two year-old debutante Georgina is the owner of a small unsuccessful bookstore. She also writes novels. She has an overactive imagination and regularly escapes reality by means of her romantic daydreams about three men in her life, which are acted out on stage. The play's time span covers a single day of Georgina's life, during which several successive extravagant and often comic daydreams are portrayed.
The play’s fantasy sequences seemed tailor-made for Ball’s style and comic wit. In a way, Georgina was a prelude to the “Lucy” character on TV, who is dreaming her way out of her suburban life - and sometimes succeeding. In the play, Georgina’s imagination takes her to:
A balcony in Mexico...
The maternity ward of a hospital...
A stage where she plays Shakespeare’s Portia
A street where she is a ‘woman of the night’ in a scarlet red dress.
On two notable occasions, Lucy Ricardo’s fantasy or dream life manifested itself on our TV screens. In “Ricky’s Old Girlfriend” (ILL S3;E12) Lucy dreams of what her life would be like if Ricky left her to go on tour with his former partner, sexy Carlotta Romero.
In “Lucy Goes To Scotland” (ILL S5;E17) Lucy dreams of visiting her ancestral home in Scotland while visiting London. Having just come from seeing a West End Musical, she dreams in the musical comedy format!
In “Lucy and the Dummy” (ILL S5;E3), after MGM offers Lucy a contract, she imagines fame and fortune but is fully awake. Lucille Ball pantomimes the joys and sorrows of stardom while a Theremin gives the sequence a dream-like, surreal quality. Lucy Ricardo is most like DREAM GIRL’s Georgina in this short reverie.
In “Lucy and the Monsters” (TLS S3;E18), Lucy Carmichael has a nightmare after watching a scary horror movie. The dream takes her and Viv to a haunted house where they encounter a variety of typical movie monsters and then turn into witches themselves - all before waking up.
DREAM GIRL CAST & CREW
Herbert Kenwith (Producer) later directed 14 episodes of “Here’s Lucy” between 1969 and 1970. Dede Ball warned Kenwith that her daughter was indeed the bitch everyone said she was. Lucille snapped back: “I am not! Only when I’m working.”
Jack Benny (to Herbert Kenwith, about Lucy): "Herbert, you ought to call a psychiatrist for her."
Jus Addiss (Director) was the life partner of DREAM GIRL actor Hayden Rorke. Barbara Eden (who, like Rorke, also guest-starred on “I Love Lucy”) later remembered that Addiss and Rorke were “unabashedly gay” and often invited the “I Dream of Jeannie” cast over for parties.
Jo Mielziner (Settings) had also done the scenery for the Broadway premiere of DREAM GIRL in 1945. From 1949 to 1970 Mielziner won 9 Tony Awards. His designs were adapted by Richard Burns for the tour starring Ball.
The play co-starred Scott McKay as the imaginative writer. McKay played the role of Wilbur in the 1958 pilot for TV’s “Mr. Ed” but was replaced on the series by Alan Young.
Hayden Rorke, best known as Dr. Bellows in “I Dream of Jeannie”, was also in the cast. Lucy later employed him to play the Ricardo’s new neighbor, whom she suspects to be a spy, on “I Love Lucy.” He later returned to play a judge on a 1971 episode of “Here’s Lucy.”
Barbara Morrison was an English-born actress who came to Hollywood in the late 1940s. She did two episodes of “The Lucy Show” and three episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
Lela Bliss went on to play Mrs. Shellhammer in the 1947 film Miracle on 34th Street, which also starred William Frawley.
Andrew Duggan later did an episode of Desilu’s TV series “The Greatest Show on Earth” (1964). He is best remembered as the voice of the Father in Disney’s theme park attraction The Carousel of Progress.
Phil Arthur appeared on Broadway from 1948 to 1952, his last play with Henry Fonda (Lucy’s one-time boyfriend) and Frances Baviar (Aunt Bee on “The Andy Griffith Show”). He began on television in 1949 and his last job on the small screen was as a background player on “Perry Mason” from 1961 to 1966.
Dorothy Elder began doing television in 1950, but her career only lasted until 1955, as a regular on “True Romances”.
Alan Hewitt was a veteran of sixteen Broadway shows, including the original production of Death of a Salesman (1949) and Call Me Madam starring Ethel Merman (1950). From 1964 to 1966 he played Detective Brennan on “My Favorite Martian.” In 1964, he appeared on an episode of “The Lucy Show.”
The Newark Star-Ledger review of DREAM GIRL, June 24, 1947. [Thanks to Eric C. Schwarz, research librarian extraordinaire, for the review.]

*Due to acute laryngitis, Lucille Ball was unable to perform Tuesday, January 13, 1948. June Havoc, having performed the role of Georgina Allerton on Broadway and in the first national tour, was flown in and she performed that evening. However, she became ill as well, and the Wednesday, January 14 and Thursday, January 15 performances were canceled. Haila Stoddard, who also played the role on Broadway, was flown and in and she went on for the Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17 performances. Ball returned to the show Monday, January 19, 1948.
In January 1948, Lucille got the opportunity to recreate the role in Los Angeles, but fell ill with a virus shortly after it opened and the show closed prematurely. Because Ball was known for her film roles, promotion often said that she was appearing “Live In Person” - which seems obvious in a live theatre production!
Handbill for the Los Angeles production that was cut short by Ball’s illness. Lela Bliss took over for Barbara Morrison.
Souvenir program from the Brooklyn engagement at Brandt’s Flatbush Theatre in July 1947. It includes an excerpt from a write-up by Hall Barnell for Actors Cues about the rehearsal he attended at Malin Studios and a sketch of Ball from that day.
Detroit Music Hall - signed program.
Boston Production at the historic Shubert Theatre - signed program.
San Francisco production at the Curran Theatre.
During this San Francisco engagement, Ball’s husband was not far away! Five blocks, to be exact. It is likely that Lucy and Desi stayed at the Palace Hotel while she was performing at the Curran. It is also likely that Desi’s performances were in lieu of a hotel bill for the couple!
"I have seen other productions of this play, but the only actress whose performance really delighted me was Lucille Ball. She lacked… tender wistfulness, but her vivid personality and expert timing kept the play bright and alive." ~ Edgar Rice, Playwright
It is pretty clear that this photo was an early version of photo shop. Although it was created during the time of the play, it is quite obviously a manipulated photo.
In August 1947, the show had finally reached what was known as “the subway circuit” - a group of New York City borough theatres that were not considered Broadway. Meanwhile, in Princeton, the summer season continued with yet another show produced by Kenwith and Kennedy, “Horace”. The Billboard review of August 30 was of the opinion that Lucille Ball was simply playing Lucille Ball, and that audiences were okay with that.
This sterling silver cigarette case was a gift to Lucy from the DREAM GIRL company and is engraved on the front: "With Grateful appreciation TO OUR 'DREAM GIRL' December 1947." The lid has the engraved signatures of the company, 17 in all, including actors Scott McKay, Guy Standing, and Andy Duggan. The item came up for auction after the death of Gary Morton.
While Lucy and the DREAM GIRL company were touring, they knew that a film adaption had been made and was awaiting release. It starred Betty Hutton and MacDonald Carey, but did not open to the public till later in 1948. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz took a chance on Hutton in 1959, giving her a CBS sitcom “The Betty Hutton Show” which ended after 30 episodes.
In 1955, while Lucille Ball was busy with “I Love Lucy,” NBC made DREAM GIRL into a TV film starring Vivian Blaine. It featured “Lucy” character actors Hal March and Ida Moore.
Ten years later, it was turned into a Broadway musical named Skyscraper, with the play adapted by Peter Stone (”1776″) and starred Julie Harris in her first musical. It earned five Tony nominations. Charles Nelson Reilly guest-starred on “Here’s Lucy” in 1970. Peter Marshall played Lucy’s brother-in-law Hughie on “The Lucy Show” in 1963. Choreographer Michael Kidd also did the dances for Wildcat starring Lucille Ball in 1960.
