I was originally going to turn this into a Youtube video, but it ended up being more work than I was really ready to tackle, and it was not ‘sparking joy’, so I decided to abandon the project. The rhyme scheme of this song was a bitch to try and get right. Technically, it changes for the last verse, but I had already more or less written it, and I didn’t feel like messing with it, so I just said ‘fuck it’ and went with what the rhyme scheme for the rest of the song was. 

Not everything that happened this year was bad, but, man, it was a year. I’m American, so what happened was very America centric, but I tried to branch out and be international with what was going on. Even with the extra verse and extra lines, I still didn’t manage to get everything. The Spn canon approved Dean Cas soundtrack (top five)

Youtube recommended a Destiel fan video to me yesterday, and I ended up losing about 2 hours while repeatedly saying ‘’just one more!’’. It got me to thinking about how the canon scenes didn’t need to be manipulated at all to fit the lyrics or show how romantic they were. Of course they don’t. The show itself has used music and montages to underline Cas and Dean’s relationship since season 7. 

They have done this using songs that fit them so well, that you can track the evolution of their relationship pretty accurately, using just the songs the show has used for them.

1. 7x17 : Turn into Earth, The Yardbirds 

Otherwise known as that time the show created it’s own Destiel fanvideo. Cas returns to Dean, after presumably dying in a Leviathan explosion, only to return with a never again mentioned wife and without his memories, believing himself to be a healer named Emmanuelle. The scene where Cas smites the demons, and in the process recovers his memories, is one of my favourite scenes of the entire series, and part of that is down to the song choice. We don’t hear any of the lyrics, but the melody itself is pitch perfect. The Yardbirds were known for utilising mock Gregorian chant styles in their music and I think that is reflected here. Cas recovering his memories is given an almost religious like quality. And what are almost all Cas’ memories of? A certain broken hearted hunter who carried his trenchcoat around with him for months, hoping against hope that the angel would return to him. The lyrics do somewhat thematically fit, but since we don’t hear them, I see this one as significant mostly for highlighting the importance Dean has in Cas’ life and that they used music to do it effectively, added this as an important tool that could be used in the future in telling Dean and Cas’ story.

2. 8x17 : Goodbye stranger - Supertramp

Here we come to Robbie Thompson, the king of the end of episode montage. The glorious 8x17, in which on his knees, Dean told Cas ‘’I need you’’, and broke his link with Naomi and heaven. Only for Cas to leave anyway, with the angel tablet.. The song that plays over the final moments, focusing first on Dean and then Cas alone on the bus.

‘’Goodbye stranger it's been nice, Hope you find your paradise.

Tried to see your point of view. Hope your dreams will all come true’’

Since purgatory, Dean has been trying so hard to keep Cas with him, yet at every turn Cas keeps leaving. He leaves at the portal, after their one hunter adventure in 8x08, after killing Samandriel and now again after Dean has laid himself, and his feelings, bare to Cas. I think it finally hits Dean that Cas is an angel. He doesn’t understand these human feelings, or at least doesn’t process them, in the same way that Dean does. It’s why he’s so resigned in the finale to Cas closing the gates and returning to heaven and doesn’t try to stop him. He has to say goodbye and ‘’let him find his paradise’’. He can’t be what Dean needs and wants him to be, or respond the right way to Dean’s feelings and declarations. Those are human things Cas would need to be human to understand and well...it’s almost like there’s a narrative playing out or something.

3. 9x18:  The sun ain’t gonna shine anymore - Frankie Valli

Ah fancy meeting you again here Robbie. I felt personally victimized by this episode. From Metatron looking into the camera and telling us to listen to the subtext, to Dean and Cas smiling like idiots in love down the phone at each other over minibar jokes that were not amusing to anybody but them (Sam is here too), to the final montage at the end. 

‘’Loneliness is the coat you wear

A deep shade of blue is always there

The sun ain't gonna shine anymore

The moon ain't gonna rise in the sky

Tears are always clouding your eyes

When you're without love’’

Nope no subtext to be found there. Cas taking off his coat of loneliness, tied to his angelic identity, only to once again put it back on before meeting the angels. Cas’ decision to take in the other angels stolen grace, to give up his human life that he had found a quiet dignity in, was because duty always comes first. Getting the angels home, and fixing heaven is his responsibility. He still feels the responsibility to heaven that he did last season but things are different now. He’s been human, he knows how it feels to be sorry, to enjoy things and to love. He knows how it feels to want these things. And now, after finding the mark of Cain on Dean’s arm, he knows how it feels to be ‘’without love’’.

4. 10x05 - I’ll just wait here then 

Oh boy this song. It so perfectly encapsulates Cas’ emotional arc in regards to Dean in season 10, it almost winds me. It’s so thematically on point.

‘’now you need some rest/ so I will do what’s best I’ll just wait here then/ That’s all I’ll do/ I’ll just wait here then/ I’ll wait for you’’.

It’s not like a couple of episodes ago Cas and Dean had an emotionally mature conversation, making it clear that there are no personal grievances between them, after which Cas told Dean to relax and take some time off. And it’s not like they stay relatively drama free for the rest of the season, only to settle into easy domestic patterns when they do meet. The Mark of Cain stalled any significant emotional progress from occurring in their relationship, and all Cas could really do is wait. I could drone on about how significant this song is for Cas for hours so I’m going to make myself stop and just say, fucking hell Robbie kill me now and have it over and done with already!

5. 13x05: It’s never too late - Steppenwolf

Never mind Robbie, Yockey took up your mantle and finished me off.

This was the culmination of years of subtext. After the emptiness and the pain of their separation, there was no dialogue that could have done their reunion justice, not even ‘’Hello Dean’’. Instead the scene was presented in the classic Destiel language: wordless emotionally charged stares, with a rousing soundtrack saying everything these fuckers can’t/wont. At least not yet. But what does the song tell us:

and to hammer it in further:

‘’Tell me who's to say after all is done

Come on! Seriously this song is straight up telling these two to stop dancing around each other. The way they’ve handled their relationship in the past isn’t going to work anymore. It’s not what either of them want. Their reunion is ‘’understated’’ as Jensen called it at the time, because both of them know what the stakes are now, especially Dean. They know what happens when they lose each other, how much this relationship means to them and they want to get it right. Since this was not the end of the story and they’re not going to get to live happy ever after, at least while the show is still running, Dean didn’t quite learn the lesson as well as he should have. There was growth for sure after Cas returned, but they still have a ways to go in regards to communication and just USING THEIR WORDS. Come on boys! I’m rooting for you.

From Cas showing the central role Dean plays in his priorities, to Dean recognising angel Cas couldn’t understand or perhaps reciprocate his feelings the way he needed him too. To a Cas that’s experienced being human realising that angelic life, and a life without love is not something he can be happy with. To Cas’ role being to wait for Dean while he figured his shit out and finally to them both starting to acknowledge that it’s not too late to change the way they’ve been doing things. The highs, the lows, you can get the cliffnotes version of their relationship by charting the music Spn chose to accompany these moments. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that these music choices started appearing in 7x17, the episode from which, at least in my opinion, the show started treating their relationship differently, before veering pretty heavily into the romantic tropes in season 8. Music has a language and power, that sometimes words can’t convey, and remind me - what was that gift that Dean once gave Cas?

Folding the last of the laundry you were finally on top of everything the house was clean, dinner was on for the boys when they got home. Running upstairs you hopped in the shower, changing into the closest pair of jeans and a grey v neck you grabbed everything you needed for work holding on until the last possible second to see the boys after school.

“Hi, Mom.” Oscar smiled as he dumped his backpack by the door.

“Hi, darling where’s your brother?”

“Sayin’ bye to Charlotte.”

“Oh really?” You asked with a raised brow.

“Yeah.”

“He still thinks I don’t know about her right?” At 17 he was more than happy to tell you about his younger brother’s love life.

He flopped down onto the couch with a smirk. “Yep, no idea.”

Leaning down you kissed his cheek. “Dinner is on low, your Dad will be home at six, call me if you need anything or-”

“Extension two zero seven, I’ve got it, see ya tomorrow Mom!”

“Bye Mom!” Jake waved from the curb as you drove away.”

Tonight was already the shift from hell, everything that could’ve gone wrong did, computers broke, traumas were none stop and patients were especially nauseous this evening. After maybe your fifth change of scrubs you reached for your phone only to find your pocket empty, circling back you headed towards the lockers to check in with the boys.

Hitting redial your nails tapped against the countertop as you waited to hear your son’s voice.

“Mom its Dad he’s not home and he won’t answer his phone, Uncle Sam won’t either.”

“Okay calm down, he’s probably gone out for a drink with Uncle Sam, let me know if he’s not home in the next hour okay?”

“Okay.”

“See you later baby.”

“Bye Mom.”

Dialling Dean’s number it went straight to voicemail, Sam’s too, they were probably having a drink.

“Y/N, we need you huge trauma coming in.” Ellie patted your back. “Gas explosion it’s a whole lotta nasty.” Throwing the stethoscope around her neck she ran towards the ER.

Stuffing your phone in your pocket you followed her, running into complete chaos the ER was full of men and women nearly all of them with burns and shrapnel embedded in them.  

“Winchester! A little help over here.” Dr Novak called you over towards a trauma room.

“What do we have?” Walking into the room your heart stopped, Sam lay on the bed blood covering his chest and face.

“Winchester! Y/N! Doctor Winchester!” Cas shouted at you as he worked on Sam.

“Sam, what the hell happened?” Walking towards him he looked at you with wide eyes, his hand reaching out for you, taking his hand he squeezed it hard. “I’m here Sam, I’m here.”

“Sam your brother in law Sam?” Cas asked, answering him with a nod he focused back on Sam. “I’ve got this, you can stay with him.

Sam grunted squeezing your hand. “Just try to stay still okay?” He grunted again reaching a hand up to drag away the oxygen mask. Settling it back over his nose and mouth you moved his hand away. “Stop it and let Dr Novak help you.”

Coughing he squeezed your hand. “Dean.” He wheezed out. “Dean.”

“What where is he?”

Sav waved his hand towards trauma 3. “Go.” He coughed.

Castiel looked up at you. “He’ll be fine, go find your husband.”

Pulling your hand away from Sam’s you leaned down kissing his cheek. Wiping the tears from your cheeks you left Sam in Cas’ capable hands, walking towards trauma 3 you took a deep breath steadying yourself before you walked in, opening the door Ellie looked up at you.

“You got here quick I only paged cardio seconds ago.”

“I, I’m not.” Walking towards them your hand took Dean’s blood covered hand, he was in a much worse state than Sam, he had multiple lacerations, metal embedded in his chest, and an obviously broken arm with an exposed bone which Ellie was working on stopping the bleeding.

“Y/N, I need a cardio consult.” She looked up to see your palm cupping his cheek.

“Baby it’s going to be okay, Ellie has you, you’re gonna be okay.” Smiling down at him is hand covered yours on his cheek.

Ellie stood up straighter looking at you. “Y/N, is this Dean?”

Nodding you didn’t look away from your husband. “What the hell happened?”

Pulling at his oxygen mask your hand stopped him. “Don’t.”

“Explosion.” He croaked.

“Why are you so much worse than Sammy?”

Squeezing his eyes shut he took a shaky breath, looking at you with those green eyes you fell in love with he tried to smile. “Had to get the crew out.”

Letting his hand go your hands moved to his chest. “Y/N, you can’t work on your husband.” Ellie kept her voice low as she walked towards you.

“You paged cardio, cardio’s here.”

“Y/N…”

“Either you get another surgeon in here or I’m not stopping, Dean what happened?”

“We were workin’ on the new housing estate… I got everyone out… then there was a second one.” He wheezed.

“Jones go page for an emergency cardio consult for Dr Winchester’s husband, go now and don’t return without a surgeon with you,” Ellie ordered the intern in the room.

Dean’s hand stopped your movement across his chest. “Sweetheart, the boys.”

“I’ll call them, they’re at home, they’ll be okay.”

Squeezing your hand he looked up at you.” How am I lookin’?” He tried to look down at your other hand on his chest.

“I need you to stay still and keep breathing for me okay?”

“Y/N.” Ellie pulled you away from Dean.

“Get Curtis down here now, I’m not leaving him.” Taking Dean’s hand your palm cupped his cheek. “Why do you always need to be the hero, why couldn’t you just get yourself out?”

He smiled at you. “They have kids.”

“So do you.”

Dr Curtis walked into the room. “And what do we have in here.”

“Y/N’s husband.”

Dean’s smile faltered slightly, his blinks slowing.

“Dean, Dean look at me.” Patting his cheek his eyes found yours.

“Tell the boys I love them and you, I love you.” Smiling at you his eyes rolled back in his head as Dr Curtis ripped you away from your husband, Ellie’s arms wrapped around you keeping you from running towards the man you loved as you watched Dr Curtis shock him in between CPR.

After twenty minutes with no heartbeat, he called it, called it on your husband's life, sinking to the floor Ellie went with you, cradling your head against her chest as you cried.

Dean was gone, the love of your life was gone, the father of your children was gone, the man you were supposed to spoil your grandbabies with was gone.

It wasn't until months later when the true scale of the explosions was realised, 4 people lost their lives including Dean, all due to a non disclosed fault six months before they broke ground. Dean saved twenty six people’s lives, pulled two out of the rubble and carried them towards the ambulances, a job he shouldn’t have done, a job for the firefighters attending the scene, a job he felt he needed to do. A job that would sign his death certificate and a job that would see his daughter never meet her father.

you ever think about how they hired twins to play the triplets that dean and crowley have sex with. I feel like that right there is proof that they're not queerbaiting, because no one could possibly be baited by that because 99 percent of everyone didn't even notice it. They just put it in there cause dean's bi and they write him as bi.

It’s funny, for whatever reason I was thinking last night about how my own personal definition of the way the show may or may not queerbait has changed over the seasons, and it’s not just to do with personal growth but the way the show is written and the way they are handling things. 

My impression of how it all felt in the start of season 10 was utter disbelief that they were so on the nose about Dean and Crowley, and I know not everyone wants to/does think that they hooked up, but there’s some stuff the show pushed there that in some ways it would have no other excuse to do and I went cold on Drowley several times after feeling like the handling was sweeping it under the rug, writing it off as villainous queerness or other ways to distance Dean from it like suggesting he wasn’t in control or roofied by being a demon, that thankfully at least was not how Crowley died on the show, with 12x15 giving us the last example of how that dynamic had matured, and it WAS matured, and at least in terms of respecting that Dean n Crowley had once eloped, was about as good as it could get. And I think owning that the dynamic wasn’t a sense of that time being abusive was important given how much Dean and Crowley interacted and behaved towards each other AFTER, as well as exactly how we were supposed to read whether Dean should feel violated or smug or nostalgic about it all (and he did flash between them depending on the season or episode in the time after). But at the start of season 10 this whole journey was really only just beginning. 

Obviously people had written about the queercoding and Crowley’s seduction before then, but in very careful metaphorical terms, and as much as it was suggestive in season 9, the fact is that without season 10 it could easily remain a metaphorical ~seduction to evil~ where this was written in terms of romantic seduction - except for where it was fatherly or brotherly - but 10x01 smashed that and made it really really clear that you could read that Dean and Crowley had been hooking up, even independent of the twins/triplets subtext. Specifically when Crowley is annoyed Dean and Ann-Marie hooked up in his bed, and Ann-Marie tells him and Dean to get a room, and he’s like, we had one. Of course you can pretend that not everything Crowley says is innuendo (and room = specifically the bed), but that exchange had a lot of jealousy and a lot about his and Dean’s *personal* relationship, as much as the other stuff was about the more wild stuff they shared with others while howling at the moon. Which was part of the longer term emotional game Crowley was playing about their business relationship and Dean being his scary consort and them sort of going exclusive >.> 

And in that context, Crowley mentions they’d done some memorable stuff to triplets together, and on rewatching you catch they’re hanging out with twins in the bar before that, but the wider context was this absolute explosion of queer subtext and borderline text and a dynamic that needed concentrated work to not come to the conclusion they’d been fucking all summer, with and without buddies of whatever gender with them. Focusing on the male twins in the background as a hint that Dean had had sex with men is ignoring where Crowley directly implies they’d been hooking up and now he wanted to go exclusive with Dean as the hugest neon sign that, yes, Dean has been having sex with at least one man, regardless of the gender of the triplets. Like, I know people were like hurr blurr the triplets could have been women, #no homo, sometimes men sleep with triplets together like bros. Which traps us into hyperfocusing on what the triplets were and using them as the definitive proof, when in fact the reason triplets were being banged in the first place was because Dean and Crowley were banging all the time everywhere up and down seedy bars in America, and Dean didn’t want the good times to end, while Crowley wanted the d all for himself now pls. 

And considering that’s the thing under the paper thin surface that you can remotely pretend that Dean only slept with women and he and Crowley were just hanging out the entire time, regardless of no matter how much more subtext the show piled on later, less close to the surface but with more confidence that everyone knew Dean had banged Crowley and the only way any of this worked any more was that that had happened, even just when we only had 10x01 to work with, the whole Dean n Crowley thing was so enormous that you can’t just speculate on what the twins were to approach to what degree was this queerbaiting or not. The twins are a detail that you can pick up on and speculate on if you look deeper, as they know we sometimes do. I’m not saying they’re NOT an aspect of this, but they’re a relatively buried easter egg of subtext compared to, say, Crowley sobbing over his flickr albums in the next episode :P

To what degree Drowley was queerbaiting is the real question, and since Crowley is now consigned to the show’s history books, we have the full story in a way. In the context of what we have now, I don’t think overall, all comments included, the show ever pretended, even when distancing Dean from it, even when painting it as abusive or Dean having diminished responsibility, that Dean and Crowley did *not* bang. I think there are multiple comments which as long as you are permissive that Dean would have could have probably did, that in seasons 11 and 12 pretty clearly indicate a memory of having slept together one point or another, especially 11x23 and 12x15 with overt references to sexual things from Crowley to Dean, or 11x07 and the implication that over a year later Dean still has Crowley’s answerphone messages from howling at the moon, and knows and remembers details of his personal life fondly. (I don’t think that’s the only time Bobo wrote them like that but that’s the one that springs to mind :P)

Buuut they never showed them on screen in such a way that could be seen from the moon as them together, like actually showing them IN a sexual relationship while Dean was a demon, or having Dean confirm Crowley’s innuendo with more than the usual reactions where he gets plausible deniability to any gay stuff going on. And SOME of that I think MAY be to do with the problems with the villainous queerness slant, and the way it was at times framed as abusive/Dean lacking control. Because they would not commit to exploring the aftermath of that relationship SERIOUSLY, i.e. making it clear they had slept together when Dean was a demon, and him on-screen dealing with how that made him feel and how he felt about Crowley, and even, god forbid, his own sexuality, the best they could do to resolve it was to establish eventually a sort of civil exes dynamic, both aware of their history, but not harping on it, even if Crowley remained somewhat to entirely besotted by Dean for the rest of his time on the show. The lack of handling it seriously means it stays as a somewhat jokey subtext later on, and they can play it off as no harm no foul by the end of season 11 and through season 12. 

I think in that vein it also eventually contributed to Crowley being sidelined and eventual downfall, because he was trapped in the subtext of being Dean’s ex and all the enormous complications that made between them and for his personal life, again without being able to explore it or leave a lasting, openly discussed impact on him. He no longer directly antagonised them, but he couldn’t cross any lines which made him human or part of the team for more than passing moments because the longer he was around Dean the more awkward it got and the more it would beg them to explore what, exactly, were Dean and Crowley now, and the obvious issues that would have/could have arisen if we discussed this like adults and we were allowed to just textually state in a frank and open way that Dean had been seduced by Crowley that one time. 

And I think in terms of where that puts us, it means that Drowley was very much a stifled relationship, officially over and no chance of getting it back, which in some ways is as large as or larger then Destiel in the weight it puts on the show when it comes to answering queerbaiting charges, because it could never be addressed openly while Crowley was alive, still ISN’T acknowledged, and Dean is as closeted as he was before, despite in his actual living human memory, knowing what it’s like to bang Crowley on the side for 3 months of his life with no direct personal growth (that is: now banging Cas, happily, or even banging other random guys, no angst, just for fun hook ups, equivalent to the textual times he picks up women) to show for this wild college experimentation metaphor phase of his life. 

At this point you really can only change the final judgement on it by making Dean canonically bi and then giving him the character growth, acknowledging the role Crowley had played in it, and allowing him to live what had just been subtext as a textual part of his character. In all other respects, I think the fact that Dean subtextually has hooked up with Crowley, and presumably other men probably other than the male implied triplets we saw on screen as well, but it’s relegated to this one particular part of his story and locked up in the subtext box, is going to look absolutely like one of the show’s worst sins of queerbaiting if we get to the end and that box is never opened again. And not to say it all looks rosy while we wait until the hypothetical what if of textualising Dean’s bisexuality and trying to live a positive life of hoping that will happen. As it stands, the handling in the text is depressing, and speaks of how far the show will currently allow any queer relationship for Dean to go. Meaning a worst case scenario is that his borderline subtextual marriage to Cas may never move beyond a similar point if this remains the high water mark of the show’s willingness to show Dean in a genuine, sexual relationship with a man. And that’s something you have to at least think about, in terms of how it looks now, and how it might look one day, no matter how positive you are about the endgame of the show, when it comes to being realistic about the show’s queerbaiting, or at least perceived queerbaiting if you don’t believe they are. That’s what other people are seeing, both with Drowley and Destiel. 

I mean, that deleted scene in 10x14 says it best: Cas and Crowley trapped together, frustrated and living in angry despair in their competition over Dean, where he is busy not picking either of them, while they vie for his attention and consider each other his boyfriend in all but name, and yet he will not commit to either of them in the way they desire. And this is the same frustrated wall that Cas is still stuck bouncing up against, even when his romantic rival is *utterly* vanquished and removed from the narrative, and hadn’t even really been competing for Dean for like 2 seasons before that.

Everything slips right through his hands in the blink of an eye. Clint Barton can fix anything. World Ending? Save it. Bad Guys? Take ‘em out. The love of his life, his soul mate, forgetting their whole relationship? Fight even harder. She might not remember what they have. She might be confused, lost, scared, but it’ll be a cold day in hell if she thinks he’ll give up that easy. He’ll do anything he has too. Help her remember, or make her fall in love with him, all over again. But what if it’s not him that she’s getting close to this time? What if it’s a losing fight? Is he supposed to watch the woman he loves, fall for someone else? Like hell, is he letting that happen.

“In coming!” Someone yells as the elevator opens. Cho and her medical team rush off with the gurney. Covered in ash, small cuts and a gash in her head, Y/N hasn’t woken still. Buck stumbles off after them, mumbling to Cho.

“Buck!?” He calls, catching his attention when the medic team cuts him off.

“Barton!” Bucky looks back, rushing towards them. Nat’s wrapped around him quickly.

“What happened, Buck?” Steve asks.

“They fucking blew the building. Whatever they were doing, they didn’t want us to know about.” He runs his hand through his hair. It’s a tangled, knotted, unkempt mess. “I took the blunt of it. I tried to keep her from getting to hurt.” Buck swallows, looking down at Nat.

“Just walk us through it.” She nods.

“It’s so stupid, Nat.” Buck shakes his head. “I had her. I swore it was the right thing to do. We were sliding across the ground. I put my fucking hand out.” He holds up his metal hand. “Her head bounced off it.” He swallows.

“She hit her head on your arm?” Sam lifts a brow.

“It made a nasty noise.” Buck shakes his head.

“You were trying to protect her.” Nat assures her husband.

“I tried, and I broke her.” Bucky’s voice shakes.

“Bucky.” Clint sniffs, lifting his head. “It could be so much worse if you didn’t do what you did. She’s still breathing. There’s a chance. If you hadn’t, I can’t imagine what it would be like. She’d be dead.” He grips Buck’s shoulder. Sucking in a deep breathe.

“I’m so sorry Clint.” Buck breaks first, dropping his head to Clint’s shoulder. He does the one thing he can, hugs Bucky. He nods, feeling the welling in his own eyes.

“Stark.” Cho stands in the opening.

“What do you need?” Tony steps forward.

“Neuro specialist.” Cho swallows. “She’s got swelling. It’s not my specialty.” She admit.

“Strange.” Peter blurts out.

“What?” They look over at him.

“He, he’s a neuro specialist. His ah that other girl, Palmer. She’s his prodigy.” Peter nods.

“FRIDAY, call Strange. Tell him it’s a medical emergency. Open a fucking portal into the damn Med Bay if he has too.” Tony demands.

“Yes Sir.” She complies.

It’s minutes when they sit down, waiting. Sparks and gold lights cut into a wide opening off to the far side of the waiting room. Strange steps through with a woman. She looks a little confused, he was going to assume that was over the portal.

“Tony what happened?” Strange looks around.

“Y/N.” Clint swallows.

“Christina.” Strange nods, she moves away. Heading down the hall, meeting Cho. “How bad?”

“She hit her head on Bucky’s arm.” Peter explains.

“Trip and fall?” Strange lifts a brow.

“Explosion.” Nat swallows hard.

“I’ll go help Christina.” He nods, jogging after the doctor.

“I’ve read they’re the best. She is, Strange, doesn’t practice anymore. But she’s world renowned. When Strange stepped down, she took his place. She does miracle work.” Peter nods, trying to bring them some form of comfort.

“Thanks Peter.” Clint nods, dragging his hands down his face.

“I just mean, she’s in the best hands.” Peter shrugs.

“We know kid.” Tony assures his child.

“What if the damage is too bad?” Buck squeezes his eyes shut, pain ripping through his expression.

“She’s a good person. Good solider.” Steve spoke softly. Suddenly sitting up quickly. Buck’s head comes up, with wide eyes.

“Steve, Bucky. To my lab.” Tony jumps up. Clint watches them go, unable to even ask for an explanation.

“There is someone, I need to, make a call.” Peter slips from his chair, leaving as well.

“Should someone call Coulson?” Banner asks.

“I will.” Nat nods. She too stands and leaves the room.

“We need to do some testing and want to give her something for the pain. Is she allergic to anything?” Strange is standing in the opening.

“No, not medication.” Clint shakes his head.

“Any medical information we need?” Strange asks.

“Ahh. Yeah, she can’t be on heavy pain meds without making her sick. She’s got low iron, she takes a pill for it.” He rattles it off quickly.

“Good, I can make sure she gets the iron supplement, we’ll give her a nausea med to balance the pain meds.” Strange explains. Sam pats him on the shoulder, reminding him he wasn’t alone. Wanda laces her fingers with his. 

“Thank you.” She speaks up, when he can’t get his mouth to open again.

“I’ll keep you updated.” Strange nods, leaving once more.

“I jinxed it.” Clint whispers to himself. Nat is stepping back into the room.

“How?” Sam looks confused.

“I bought a ring, planned to ask her to spend her life with me.” He shakes his head, tears wetting his cheeks. “I jinxed it. Now she’s slipping through my fingers.” He sniffs.

“I did it. I pushed you. If anyone jinxed things, it was me. I’m at fault.” Nat speaks up.

“Nat. No.” He swallows.

“If Buck was here, he’d say it was his fault.” Sam adds.

“We’re all at fault.” Wanda’s voice the strongest. Her head held up. “We all fucked up. It should have been more than the two of them. I could have gone.” She looks between them. “You should have asked her a long time ago. Nat shouldn’t have tricked her. We all suck.” She shrugs. “But that’s family. We fuck up, but we stick together.”

“Coulson is flying out.” Nat explains, coming to take a seat.

“Guess calling him was premature.” Clint nods. Remembering the phone call with Coulson only hours before.

“He thought I was calling with her answer.” Nat admits.

“Damn.” Sam whispers.

“I’m going to see if there is anything I can do to help.” Banner stands, leaving but he doesn’t head for the Med room, he heads for the elevator like the others.

“I feel like,” Clint shifts in his seat, panic rising in his chest “like I, I can’t breathe.” He pulls at the collar of his T-shirt.

“Want to climb up into the rafters?” Sam offers. Wanda and Nat give him a dirty look. “It was a serious offer.” Sam huffs.

“Come on.” Nat grabs his hand, pulling him up.

“We can’t leave.” He tries to tug back.

“We’ll stay. FRIDAY will page you the second Strange is coming towards us.” Wanda nods.

“Come on.” Nat leads him towards the elevator.

“Nat I don’t think, I can’t breathe.” He swallows, taking short breathes. Feeling like he can’t get a good deep breathe.

“Shhh Barton. Focus on taking slow breathes.” She mummers softly. The elevator moves up, he tries to focus on breathing, but it just feels like he’s being slowly suffocated. The doors slide open and they’re on the landing pad. The breeze hits them, Nat pulls him from the elevator. “Deep breathes.” Her voice soft. “Marc, you see best from a distance. You breathe just the same.” She nods.

He sucks in a shaky, uneven breathe. He crumples, slumping back against the side wall. Deep breathes, the clarity he needed, was his undoing. Nat wraps around him, dropping down beside him. Allowing him to sob into her shoulder.

In coming alert warns them, someone was landing soon. His head comes up, Nat looks over. A quin jet hovers as it slows it’s landing on the pad. The jet slowly being pulled in under the cover of the tower. 

They exchange a look as the jet turns on the pad. The ramp beeps loudly, before slowly lowering. Standing in the opening, waiting for the ramp to come down. Phil Coulson.

“Sorry I took so long.” He steps down the ramp.

You sat up in bed, three doctors stood in your room. You remember Cho, she smiles at you with sympathy at the corners of her eyes. You look yourself over, confused. How did you end up here?

“I’m Dr. Strange. This is Dr. Palmer.” A tall man introduces himself and the other doctor.

“May I asked what happened?” You had a bad taste in your mouth. “And for some water, please?” Palmer moves, grabbing a cup off the tray. She hands it over to you.

“What do you remember Agent?” Dr. Strange asks.

“Ah.” You sip the water slowly trying to recall. Things are fuzzy, like someone erased your tapes. “I can’t tell you honestly.” You admit.

“Do you know your name? The woman next to you?” He lifts a brow.

“Agent Y/N Coulson. She’s Dr. Cho.” You nod, sipping more water.

“Correct. Anything else you remember?” He looks hopeful.

“I’m sorry Sir. I don’t speak freely in foreign company.” You lift your chin. “Without Captain Rogers or Director Fury, I can’t assume you have the same clearance.” You sip your water.

“I’ll retrieve Captain Rogers.” Cho nods, hurrying from the room.

“Do we know each other?” You look at Dr. Strange. You had the strangest feeling you couldn’t place.

“No ma’am we don’t.” He smiles softly at you.

Why did that feel like he was lying to you? You sip your water trying to understand. Steve walks into the room, there’s something different about him. He’s still ageless and perfected by science, but there’s an edge to him now.

“Agent Coulson.” He nods, taking a seat.

“Captain Rogers.” You set your water down.

“What do you remember last?” His brow is pulled tight. As if he was trying to keep his features flat and expressionless.

“I remember, the Russian Rogue Dictator. Coming home.” You pause, falling silent.

“What is it?” Steve wonders.

“I don’t remember anything after that.” You swallow. “Did something happen? The jet go down?” You look over at him, brow pulling in.

“That was your first mission. You took the dictator out with your bandanna.” Steve smiles.

“Why do I have a feeling of nostalgia?” You swallow.

“Y/N?” Nat stands in the open slider of your room.

“Nat?” Your brow pulls in.

“We need to talk.” She comes over, sitting on the edge of your bed.

“Don’t tell me my dad died.” You smile at her. Her and Steve exchange a look, it makes your chest tighten. “What’s wrong? Why do I feel like this? Like I’m missing things, like that man is lying to me and you two aren’t being honest?” You look between them.

“Y/N.” Nat sighs. “There was an accident.” She takes your hand.

“Who died?” You breathe. For some unknown reason Clint flashes in your mind.

“Y/N?” Cho moves towards you. The beeping has sped up rapidly. “What did you just think about?” She asks.

“Clint.” Your brow meets in the middle.

“He’s fine.” Steve blurts out. Slowly your heart rate calms.

“That was odd.” Confusion washing over you.

“You were in an accident. An explosion.” Nat explains. “You hit your head.” She nods.

“How long was I out?” You look between them.

“Four days.” Steve nods.

“But I’m fine, right?” You smile softly.

“Oh sweetie.” Nat swallows. “You’re missing the last four years.” She rushes out.

“What?” Your head spun, your stomach lurches.

“You have a mild case of amnesia.” Palmer explains.

“Mild?” You blanch.

“You could get your memories back. It’s just going to take some time.” She nods, trying to sound hopeful.

“Why four years? What am I missing?” You could feel the tears filling your eyes, panic spreading through your chest.

“That’s a lot. We’ll take it slow. Um, so you remember your first mission, that’s good.” Nat nods. “Well ah, Tony has a prodigy child. Peter Parker. He’s Spider-Man.” She watches you.

“Huh.” Your head tips. The name, the person, nothing came to mind. The feeling that washed over you though was one you didn’t understand.

“We have another member, you helped her. Wanda. She’s our best friend.” Nat squeezes your hand.

“Nothing is coming to mind.” You shake your head.

“It’s okay. It’ll take time.” Strange nods.

“What else? New members. Anything else big I need to know?” You look between Nat and Steve.

“You’ve been dating Clint Barton for four years.” Nat presses her lips together.

“No. No.” You laugh. “No.” Your laugh, gets a little panicked. “I’ve had two dates with him. Right?” You croak, looking between them.

“Sorry.” She smiles softly at you.

“Oh.” You breathe. Confusion raced through you, so why did you feel a flutter in you at the mention of Clint? Did it turn into more with him?

“The other thing.” Nat sucks in a breathe.

“What?” You blink at her.

“Do you remember the rumors, whispers of a Winter Solider?” She asks.

“Yeah, ghost stories of a Hydra soldier.” You nod.

“His name is Bucky Barnes, Y/N. He’s my childhood best friend. We saved him. He’s apart of the Avengers.” Steve nods.

“I’m, I’m going to need a lot more on that.” You nod.

“There’s more.” Nat admits.

“Okay?”

“He’s my husband, and it’s his arm you hit your head on in the explosion.” Nat looks so torn.

“His arm?” Your brow lifts.

“It’s made of Vibranium.” Steve explains.

“I hit my head on it?” Your brow pulls in once more.

“He was trying to save you.” Nat squeezes your hand.

“Are you okay?” Steve wonders, concern on his face.

“I’m horribly confused. Pretty panicked. But I have these strange feelings in my chest.” You admit.

“Like what?” Strange asks.

“Comfort? Understanding? Forgiveness?” You shrug.

“The team would like to see you. If you’re up for it.” Steve pats your knee.

“I could do that.” You nod. “Could it help?” You look at your doctors.

“It might, it might be the start to the path of getting your memory back.” Palmer nods.

“Okay. Do they know?” You wonder.

“They know you don’t remember. We’ll be patient and understanding.” Steve nods.

“I trust you.” You agree.
