here's some facts for you:

• i've been shipping those fucking idiots since 2012 - they're my ride or die.

• i used to write fanfiction for them on fanfiction.net

• my URL was once babyangelcastiel

• i used to go to supernatural conventions. i have a picture with misha collins and jim beaver which will come with me to the grave.

• they're canon - CANON. i mean the angel confessed he loved him and died but still. CANON.

• they're the OG - no one else compares. they're used as a meme to give bad news, who else can do that? no one, not ever.

i'll ship those two insufferable dorks forever and ever and ever bc it's been 12 years and i'll be damned if i give up on my first ever OTP.

so my sister is visiting this week and ofc with all four of us here there are a lot of Feelings in the air, and apparently the way i cope with that is to dive deep into my #1 comfort fandom & pairing of all time, which is, of course, dark angel and max/alec, who i will be shipping on my deathbed. the show isn't streaming anywhere and it's never going to be, it's buried in the disney vaults (it was on fox originally) and they're never ever ever going to let it out, but it was SO good and if there were any justice in the world i'd be allowed to see 2024 fandom's take on the greatest and most important OTP of all time ever.

if you have not watched the show and are wondering how a 2 season science fiction/action show from 2000 can possibly have given us the greatest pairing of All Time, you need to think about all the ~energy that jensen ackles brought to supernatural that made destiel the force that it became, and then picture him (8 years younger than s4 of spn) pouring all that energy into depicting how his secondary character was deeply, deeply in love with the heroine of the show, and TPTB had a clear mandate to keep her with her assigned love interest but several of the writers just as clearly shipped her with alec, who was demonstrably more interesting and better to and for her. and then in the middle of all that throw an early cancellation RIGHT after setting up max and alec as the leader & lieutenant of a mutant resistance movement, in a location where the assigned love interest literally couldn't go without dying (also he and max can't touch for sci-fi macguffin reasons and have just spent a miserable season pining after never even getting to fuck once). and alec is just doing that ackles-style Quiet Self-Abnegating Devotion the entire time. it's fucking LETHAL. i never stood a chance.

(also young jessica alba was not half bad as an actor herself! but she's definitely not the driving force behind the Energy between them in every single scene, although her and jensen do have fantastic chemistry)

anyway this is i think the saddest thing in my life, that there's never going to be a second dark angel renaissance (the first was after spn got big, ofc). and since it originally aired in 2000-2001, and then had a second burst of fandom popularity from like 2007-2010, there's not a lot on ao3 either. it's basically just my one fic, a whole blessed bunch of good stuff from victoria_p, and 4-5 other stories that are decent to good. and that's it. for the most beautiful important meaningful in love pairing of all time ever forever. life is not fair. anyway it is available on various illegal streaming sites and also secondhand DVDs and you should REALLY check it out, bc there are many other things to recommend it besides the world's best ship that i did not get into here. season one is objectively better but alec shows up in season two, so i recommend watching both. and then PLEASE come talk to me, i have ONE (1) friend who's into it and i'm dying.

“What happened to us?” Hellers asked, and for the first time he was being genuine with himself. “SPN, what happened?”

“We… grew up...” SPN sighed, shrugging weakly. It was an excusal for both of them. “We were…very young, Hellers…the past few years, then 2020...the world…asked a lot of us."

Hellers chewed the inside of his cheek.

“It was really hard when Confession Scene happened,” he tried. “I knew I was changing Destiel Posting vibes. It was – it was so hard to be Functioning Member of Society, and I guess, I guess I just decided you were better off without my crazed reblogs once the show ended. My mania was too much for you. If I had known…”

“You didn’t,” SPN interjected. “…Neither of us did.”

"What…are you doing…now?”

Hellers tried to put a smile on, scooting closer to SPN's bed. He stroked his hair, watching his eyes flutter with the motion.

“I’ve been indulging in other fandoms. I post for them too."

SPN laughed a little, the sound breathy and faint.

“Do you… ever rewatch me?”

Hellers scratched SPN's head a little and SPN pressed into the touch.

“All the time.”

SPN made a small sound of satisfaction, pleased by this.

“I know, when your Confession aired, I know you tried to be good for us, especially after the shitty year we had, but it wasn’t your fault. You know it wasn’t your fault, right? It was the writers and the network.”

“I understand…there wasn’t…much I could do after the Finale."

“It was never your fault, SPN,” Hellers repeated, and SPN stared at him, eyes foggy with Cancelled Spinoff.

i do think talking about the destiel mania is sooo crazy because it just. you had to be there. events so big they’d take over the dash within minutes and eventually break containment only for us to get tired of it and start making castiel posts that would get 80 notes in 3 minutes. you could post “holding a weathered old book just like i hold castiel” and 6 people would immediately say “same” . crazy

What genres do you like to read? I like to read like a combination of tropes, like grumpy x sunshine + slow burn + angst + fluff.

What genres do you like to read? I'm a big fan of angst and darkfic. I like canon-compliant, canon-divergent, and canon a little to the left fics. I enjoy character study and drama. I also like humor, especially in straightforward shipping fics. I really love a good casefic also, and I have a particular passion for fics about Sam and Dean being chased by law enforcement.

Do you have a favorite Fanfic writer? If I'm being honest probably apokteino, though obviously they're now deleted. OH! Actually, let me give a couple of candidates: eden22, withbloodstainedclothingon, VagueSurprise, and hal_incandenza, all on AO3.

What kinds of fics do you like to write? I tend to write drama and angst, and my stuff is usually either canon-compliant or slightly canon-divergent. I usually write one-shots in the 2-5k range. I do a lot of stuff with late seasons. Most of my work is Destiel but I have also some gen, some Megstiel, and some other pairings. I also tend to do a lot with season six.

What genres do you like to read? I love angst and fluff, smut isn't something I always look for in a story, but it's a great bonus. I usually only look for one-shot smut if I'm in the mood. I love me some enemies to lovers, and also a slow burn because both people can't catch a hint is one of my favorites. I like fanfic that stays close with the canon plot, and I also love a story that changes the whole setting. I think with a show like this, I really enjoy seeing works that focus on some of the downtime or in-between cases. And sometimes I just a really sad story.

Do you have a favorite Fanfic writer? Yes, currently I'm following a fanfic of Naruto x Gaara. It's called Sonder by PrinceSkylar. It touches on dark themes of childhood abuse but it's super sweet. And a little smutty by the latest chapter.

What kinds of fics do you like to write? I like to write my OTP's, I keep most of my stories to myself but I have posted some chapters of my first OTP. I've tended to keep close to canon so far but I want to branch out to an AU for college or sm. I mainly write for myself, a little indulgence.

Is there something you have not written but would like to try? I haven't explored too much in writing so I'm not sure yet what direction to go in yet. I'm mainly focused on getting my ideas out and finished before I want to start another one, really difficult though.

The world keeps spinning (but not for me)

1 Month since Cas’s Death

He’s gone.

He’s actually gone this time.

Dean cant feel him anymore.

He’s gone and it’s all Dean’s fault.

He goes searching for the answers at the bottom of whiskey bottles and in the messes of his vomit that cover the bunker floor.

Sam keeps asking what happened, and the thing is Dean wants to tell him. He wants to break down in his baby brother’s arms and wail until his lungs cant function anymore, he hopes he screams so loud it rips his throat raw and he drowns in his own blood. But every time he looks at Sam, or Jack all he hears is

“Because you cared I cared… I cared about Sam, about Jack..”

Because of you, I’m dead.

Every night Dean sits in the pitch black emptiness of the library, drowning his sorrows in whatever alcohol he can find and he talks. He talks to Cas, prays to him rather. He knows wherever Cas is, he cant hear him. Somehow that makes it easier for him, easier to whisper “I love you” into the darkness and know he’ll never hear it back. It’s not like he deserves it anyway.

2 Months since Cas’s Death

Dean wakes up every morning drenched in sweat and screaming Cas’s name. Sam holds him until he starts breathing normally again and then Dean tells him to fuck off, doesn’t Sam get it? He killed Cas. Dean murdered Cas. It’s all his fault. Why the fuck should he feel any ounce of comfort or remorse when Cas never even got to feel loved?

No one should hold Dean. Or touch him. Or speak to him.

He has to preserve who he was when he was last with Cas.

He tells the library so every night.

3 Months since Cas’s Death

“Fuck you.”

“Dean we needed to know what happened, you-“

“You had no right!”

Sam watched the tapes from the dungeon. The ones where-

“Dean you wont talk to us and you’re killing yourself! You- I cant even recognise you half the time anymore Dean. When you’re not sleeping and screaming his name you’re angry, drunk and you’re looking for something to hurt and it always seems to be you that you land on Dean- I see the bruises on your fists, please Dean, you’re scaring Jack.”

That cut deeper than Dean can ever say ‘you’re scaring Jack.’ thats exactly what Dean used to say to John when he got like this. He used to hold Sam and promise him he would never let anything bad happen to him, that he’d never let their dad lay a hand on him.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

“Fuck. You.” Dean bites out. He takes a step towards Sam and a part of him dies when Sam flinches back.

He doesn’t stop.

“You think you know what fuckin’ happened Sammy? You think you could ever understand how it fucking feels?” Deans pointer finger slammed against Sam’s chest. “I killed him. Me.” Sam cupped deans hand gently “You know that’s not true.” always so soft, despite everything.

A bitter, rotten laugh claws its way up from Deans throat “Isn’t it? You heard the man!” Dean yanks his hand away “Or did you watch him die in silence. Did you watch it take him in the quiet?” He stalks closer to Sam now, in his face, daring Sam to reply. He doesn’t.

“Well lucky fucking you.” he whispered as he heard the words die a twisted death on his tongue. Dean shoved Sam back and began pacing slowly.

“I sure wish I could’ve lived it in silence- because all I fucking hear anymore is him! He’s not even here and all I see is him, except for when I look in the mirror cause then I’m just dad.”

Dean is spiralling and he doesn’t know what he’s saying. He doesn’t know where he is, or what’s happening, he wants to hurt everything and everyone around him, but he has to protect Sam. Always his brothers protector.

“What he said-“

‘I love you.’

Dean nearly chokes on his words, they come out quiet and afraid and fill all the space in the room once inhabited by Dean’s whiskey flavoured torment. “It- It wasn’t for you.” He’s crying, he can feel it. Searing tear tracks flow down his face and Sam takes a step closer with his arms spread, ready to hold Dean together.

Dean spins on his heels and slams the door on his way out without a word.

He cries in the Library that night and imagines the black tar swallowing him too.

“I love you Cas… how could you do this? Why? Why, sweetheart? I could have gone with you.”

There was a deafening silence.

“Why didn’t you take me with you?”

4 Months since Cas’s Death

Dean doesn’t speak all month, too busy guzzling spirits.

They’re on to something big, they’re going to defeat Chuck.

Dean cant bring himself to care.

Until his phone rings.

“Cas?” he rasps into the phone.

It’s his voice.

In a heartbeat he’s up, and before he knows it he’s at the door and opening it. Not even thinking for a second that this could be a trick. All he could think was Cas.

It’s him.

It’s Cas.

It’s Cas.

5 Months since Cas’s Death

Jack’s gone too.

They beat Chuck, the world is back.

But Dean lost another person.

Because he’s selfish, Dean prays for Jack to come back to them. He was clinging to Jack, the closest thing to Cas he had left.

But because Jack was so similar to Cas, he did the right thing and left Dean’s prayers unanswered.

Eileen tries to talk to Dean, he ignores her. Seeing her there with Sam’s hand on her shoulder, and pity in her eyes is too much, it’s just another reminder of what Dean will never, ever have.

That night in the library Dean doesn’t drink, he just talks to the empty space until he falls asleep.

“I used to hate that you stood so friggin close to me all the time man. I mean really hate it.” He laughed quietly to himself, “But it’s so cold without you now.”

“Thought I saw you today.”

“God, I miss your eyes.”

“Sammy mentioned you yesterday, we were out at some fair thing and there was all these farm animals in a pen- he said ‘Cas would’ve loved all these little guys’” He took a deep breath in “and you know what? I almost let myself imagine it and smile, before i said ‘We have to bring him sometime.’” The crying started then, and it didn’t stop until Deans head hit the table.

6 Months since Cas’s Death

“He loved me.”

He’s not sure why he says it, but Sam looks up from his breakfast and looks at Dean like his heart just shattered. Dean keeps cutting up his food.

“You wanna know the worst part? Think I loved him too.”

The knife and fork clatter and Dean sinks to the floor.

He cries for hours and Sam holds him as their food goes cold.

12 Months since Cas’s Death.

Dean is 4 months sober.

When Sam moved in with Eileen, Dean got his own apartment. It’s pretty shitty but it does its job.

They turned the bunker into a halfway home for any hunters who needed it.

He’s a firefighter now.

He still talks to Cas every night.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 163,682 (and about ~200k more unpublished in my WIP folder)

3. What fandoms do you write for? Right now the big one is Stranger Things but my forever fandom is Power Rangers/Sentai/Kamen Rider. I've also written for Psych, Doctor Who, and Supernatural. (Most of my SPN and DW stuff is sequestered to my FF account.)

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I really try to, but sometimes it gets away from me and I worry it's been too long since they left the comment, and it turns into a whole thing (in my head ofc).

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Descent, easily. The post kiss freakout being resolved in another fic? When the fic was originally going to end very differently? Yeaaaaaaah.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Toss up between TFaK (fully resolving's Descent's angsty ending) or California (literally a mini-fic about the OTP getting married).

8. Do you get hate on fics? Not so far?

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I have, mainly some pretty straightforward m/m stuff. A few funkier attempts swim around my WIP folder, almost certainly never to see the light of day.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I've written a lot of subtle crossovers, but only two overt ones, and I think the craziest would be the Doctor Who/Office one I wrote back in high school. Dwight is a Dalek!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? If anyone has, they didn't ask or tell me (or it's been long enough that I forgot).

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? I have not!

14. What’s your all time favorite ship? At this point, feels safe to say Maddie/Nick, even if that's at least 75% my own interpretations and projections. Destiel, Shassie, and Steddie are pretty darn close, especially Destiel, even if I haven't been involved in that fandom in over a decade.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? A few of my orphaned fics on FF.net will probably never see the light of day, as well as some of the half-formed works in my current WIP folder. Technically have the finished final chapter of Magical Mysteries but no motivation to edit, so still holding hope for that one.

16. What are your writing strengths? Dialogue, I think. I spend a lot of time trying to imagine the scenes I write and hear the dialogue how I think the actors would deliver it.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Conciseness, clearly. Takes a lot of self-editing to wrangle a story to a manageable, clear narrative.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I've done bits and pieces of it here and there, mainly with the like five languages that I can double-check against my own thin linguistic knowledge.

19. First fandom you wrote for? if you dig back far enough, pretty sure it was Pokemon on the Bulbagarden forums

20. Favorite fic you’ve written? Descent, easily. Despite the angsty ending, it was fun to write a slice of life centered on two characters I love, going to an event I love even more.

Wentworth: another current obsession. Came for Tammy, stayed for all the amazing characters (and Tammy. Supernatural: do I recommend anyone watch this show? Absolutely not. Did it have a profound impact on who I am that I am forever grateful for? 1000% 🥰 The show that got me through the worst of my depression, the show that got me writing more fanfic than I'd ever written before, and of course, Destiel, aka the other pairing that's meant the most to me 🥰

Schitt's Creek: god I fucking love this show 🥹 It's absolutely amazing, hilarious, inclusive, lovely, beautiful, everything I adore. David/Patrick are my OTP and dear god do I have a crush on Alexis. Definitely one of my comfort shows 🥰🥰🥰

Parks and Rec: one of my oldest obsessions. Yes I am young, don't judge 😅 Ben/Leslie was... if not my first OTP, it was very close to it, and I'm pretty sure this is the show that introduced me to fanfic 😈 I have seen s3 so many times that there are multiple episodes I know by heart (long story) and there are so many episodes that make me cry and/or super emotional. This is another comfort show and I'm so glad that ppl (finally!) started giving it the recognition and love it deserved once it was almost over 😒

M*A*S*H: I have watched many classic tv shows, and this is by far my favorite. It's honestly one of the best shows ever made, and it's funny and poignant and emotional and I love it so much 🥹 Hawkeye and BJ are friendship goals and I will never stop referencing the spam lamb 😁

Elementary: best Sherlock Holmes adaptation imo and it's absolutely amazing 😍 The cases are wild and some in particular are actually genius, Jonny Lee Miller is incredible, Lucy Liu is incredible, everyone is incredible, and agh I love it so much! Not to spoil anything, but the Moriarty arc was ✨PERFECTION✨ Some of the best tv writing. And this is also a comfort show for me. (Is that weird? Probably 😂)

The Society: I will be forever sad that COVID got this canceled 😭😭😭 I need to know what happened! I need Sam and Grizz to be together! I need Elle to escape Campbell! I need Allie and Will to be freed! I wanna know who Eden's dad is! And who the fuck is Pfeiffer and why is their world in a different place in the universe and WHY CAN THE DOG CROSS BETWEEN WORLDS??????????? I NEED ANSWERS DAMMIT!

My notes: The way homophobia was present was interesting. No wrestlers or managers cared what Clark and Bruce were actually up to behind closed doors, but heaven forbid the public find out. Also this was just an enjoyable story overall. I like how Lex Luthor felt guilty over the deaths but hated Clark forever more after he said the words aloud. I also like how Lex chose to go full ham when he was publicly lost to Clark and Bruce for the sake of the art of drama.

My notes: Real life classes about project management and agile should include this fic. Lots of good advice for real life. " He had told Vader that they needed more men and been denied, but more men wouldn't necessarily have helped. Nine women couldn't make a baby in a single month." Lots of hilarity too. "So Jerjerrod had taken a page from the playbook of his subordinates and begun weaving lies, both implicit and explicit. His reports on the progress of the second Death Star stopped mentioning delays and began mentioning recent successes instead, no matter how small. Target dates disappeared from his reports entirely. In this way his superiors saw nothing but a sunny, smiling outlook that was at odds with his frantic efforts to cut enough corners to meet his deadlines."
