AFI - Fly In The Ointment Got this repress a couple of years back from Wedge Records. It came with a lot of extras which was cool, but probably jacked up the price a bit as well. AFI - Burials Review

Backstory

-----------

With Burials, AFI proved that you can't categorize them under any genre. You can always generalize them and say that they're a rock band, but that doesn't do it justice to analytical music fans. The band covers many different sounds and shows that every member is incredibly capable. Davey takes a more direct approach with his lyrics in this album, which is attributed to his time spent writing novels. Although I prefer his mysterious style shown in previous albums, I think it still gets the job done. He still managed to make Burials the darkest album that AFI has ever released, even surpassing Sing the Sorrow and DecemberUnderground. “This record is of silence, of burials, and the burials that result from that silence. It’s of betrayal, cruelty, weakness, anxiety, panic – deep and slow – despair, injury and loss. And in this it is shamefully honest and resolutely unforgiving.” - says frontman Davey Havok.

Burials ---------

1. Sinking Night (?) The album's intro song. It is a fragment of a complete song that we will probably never get to hear, says Adam Carson. It does a fantastic job of setting a dark mood and leading into the next song.

2. I Hope You Suffer (New Wave) If you want to understand what New Wave should sound like, listen to this song. It's a sound that takes a little from many other rock genres and combines them altogether. The opening synthesizers prepare you for something grand, and the drums (something you'd see from a metal song) kick things off into the heavy noise we were expecting. Hunter's bassline quickly adds to that and is a accompanied with an added melodic guitar measure to set you into the chorus. The song concludes with Davey's cries and a piano piece that highlights the hurt associated with this song.

The thing I like most about this song is that every member gets a turn to take the lead and direct where the song goes, something most notably seen in the hit song "Miss Murder".

3. A Deep Slow Panic (Dark Wave) The following song on the track is the complete opposite genre of what we just listened to. If you like The Cure, you'll probably fall in love with this song as the influence from the legendary band becomes obvious here. Beautiful song in every sense of the word, and most people that I know who have listened to it can agree with me on that-especially those who play drums themselves.

4. No Resurrection (Industrial Rock) AFI members are huge fans of Nine Inch Nails, and it is every bit apparent in this song. The drop in the opening of the song is awesome. Additionally, the moments of silences and the way Havok enunciates specific words makes the song feel that much more powerful.

5. 17 Crimes (Pop Rock) The song's symbolism is strong here, as its about the fine line between blindly chasing perfection/spirituality and finding recklessness. Davey and Jade actually wrote this song in 15-20 minutes and knew immediately that this would be the single off the album. Fun song, but I wouldn't rank it amongst the top AFI singles. For whatever reason, females seem to like this track a lot.

6. The Conductor (Progressive Rock) Very tragic, cinematic, and epic song. The first time I went through the album I declared it as my clear-cut favorite, but now it depends on my mood. There are just too many songs to love on this album. Honestly, I can't properly describe why I like this song so much, but it's great listen since there's a lot of intricate detail with many things going on. It gives the feel that THIS is what AFI is made of.

7. Heart Stops (Alternative) A very basic song as only a couple of instruments are being played simultaneously for most of the song-something that's very different than every other heavily layered one on Burials. The song has saddening lyrics, but for some reason it gives me a lighthearted feeling inside towards the end when every member of the band starts playing together and we hear "I start feeling numb, now I have to leave". The instruments have a strangely uplifting ring to it, and Davey accompanies that with his voice very well.

8. Rewind (Post hardcore) If you like this song, I'd recommend listening to the record Sing the Sorrow. The lyrics are as direct as it gets and is entrancing in its own eerie way. A very wholesome song. I love the way it ends too... "I float now, WE REWIND." 

9. The Embrace (Dark Ambient) The bassline is a great tone setter for this dark track. High pitched synths also add to the mysterious feeling the song gives. Very reminiscent of Joy Division, which is a band that is surprisingly unknown to my friends. I recognize that most people don't listen to the kind of music I do, but so many people not hearing of Joy Division is still shocking to me. Overall a good song.

10. Wild (Alternative Dance) Energetic, and the drums set the tempo with its fast pace. The song has a dark dance-y feel to it which makes it one of my favorite tracks. It's similar to Heart Stops in the sense that the lyrics were written in a negative sense but the build ups make it give off a happy feeling. It reminds me of Depeche Mode (although I can't liken it to any specific song), but I feel like there are minor comparisons between the two bands. AFI does constantly praise the renowned band, so it wouldn't surprise me if there is an influence drawn from there.

11. Greater than 84 (Alternative) Really straightforward song that just sounds good. Nothing fancy done here, but the product is as smooth as it comes.

12. Anxious (Post-punk) Hunter and Jade compliment each other throughout the album, but I thought they did a particularly good job working together on this song. Very melodic and something you'd see out of The Art of Drowning with a much cleaner sound. This song grew on me the more I listened to it.

13. Face Beneath the Waves (Synth Rock) This song isn't my jam, but I have to admit that it's the best song to use to conclude the album. It may actually have one of the best compositions in the album as well.

Last night was AMAZING! My first time seeing @afireinside couldn't have been any better. From being able to chant "Through Our Bleeding We Are One", witnessing @daveyhavok famous crowd walk and finally seeing his jumps in person, trying to survive the mosh pit and drunken fools, seeing some of my favorite songs from older albums being played and singing along, And just being surrounded by people who share the same love for this band. The Despair Faction show was definitely the best way to experience AFI for the first time. Thank you for coming with me @jonahmen, thank you for giving us a ride to the show @swess238, and thanks to everyone who took these pictures. I wish I could relive last night, it truly was one of the best days/ nights of my life. THANK YOU @afireinside @daveyhavok @tranquilmammoth @adamacarson @jadepuget for such an incredible night and for being my safe heaven. Through your music I've been able to completely accept myself for who I am. This band means so much to me. Happy Birthday to my biggest idol, and musical influence. His lyrics and music has been a huge part of my life. His music has changed me for the better, and has helped me through every emotion I've been through since 2006. From hearing his beautiful voice in Prelude 1221, and Killing Lights, to watching every music video, and live video I could find. Hearing him, seeing the emotions and the thought he puts into his music is beyond amazing. I fell out of the AFI fandom for a long time (long story), but at least I had the foresight to keep all of my old CDs. This collection was the result of so much work, scouring record stores, saving my allowance, and ordering from catalogs.
