Through Design Eyes

One would believe that a designer’s eyes are their most valuable asset. To see a colour in all dimension and depth is an innate and honed ability. To see composition in the simple and the complex is to understand the essence of the natural world; the artist’s greatest muse. To see texture, variance, and nuance in every element is to grasp harmony and balance. 

But the visual experience is as flat as printed image on paper without the layers of touch, smell, sound, and every sweet flavour. All is amplified, tuned and clarified through the senses. The smallest details become most significant.

I’ve always been drawn to the tactile, to light and form, and a lovely tune or a hint of fragrance can bring emotion to the scene. These are the connections that allow us to see through design eyes. 

The beauty of the image above hovers between simplicity and intricacy. Lacy shadows of floral wisps and pinwheel crystal dance on crisp linen.  On this tabletop, I see a refined charm that which Le Coucou, a well-known French cuisine restaurant in New York City, is all about.

Provence plaster walls adorned with demure landscapes of the old world make an intimate connection with loose, dense sprays of fresh flowers. All are brought to life through rich patina, fantasy, and one intoxicating crystal luminaire. The arched copper niche holding colourful spirits in vintage bottles acts as an alluring portal to the past. To me, every tray, crystal goblet, and utensil seem to pose in still-life form.

I see so much more than a grouping of lovely candle holders here. A subtle play between repetition and variance, contrast, and a perfect imperfection in slender leaning candles create the magic for me.

This is a raw and moody composition that layers light and art. Modern-industrial pendants appear as large tassels adorning an unframed masterpiece that hangs like a vintage drapery panel. It’s wonderfully tactile and full of nostalgic character.

Mosaic medallions and what appears as vestiges of Delft pottery bring soul to this floor. To discover history in design detail has always intrigued me and these small notions of the craft open my imagination to the once-glorious forms that graced old tables.

The smallest and the simplest become significant when emotion and connection play a role. Mourning doves in a niched-out old plaster wall bring a feeling of calm and reflection for me. I imagine them sitting on my window ledge and I hear their lamenting coos. 

These caught me designer’s eye.

Today’s Planning + lunch break.
