Dali and Schiaparelli Designs

Salvador Dali (1904-1989) and Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1973) often collaborated with each other, crossing their disciplines: fashion and art. Perhaps their most iconic creations to come from their collaboration are ‘The Lobster Dress’ (1937), seen on the left here, and ‘The Tears Dress’ (1938), both part of her ‘Circus Collection.’

The Dali and Schiaparelli collaboration is considered a historically important one, as their designs were, at the time, considered very shocking. The fame of the designs was further helped as Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, wore the Lobster Dress. Playing not just with symbolism, they also explored shocking illusions that drew the eye. It also draws attention to the changing views on design. Dali and Schiaparelli wanted to create something with an impact.

These designs are good examples of how well the pair worked together. They both appreciated shock-value, however found the need to pacify some ideas - such as Dali wishing to add a side of mayonnaise to the Lobster Dress. They are a pair that are the icons of cross-discipline collaboration, with creations that span across fashion, painting, and object design.
