Tidepools of La Jolla, California – Nursery of The Pacific Ocean Marine Life - Torrey Pines, California – San Diego Pacific Ocean Beach Adventure

To the north and east of the beach Los Peñasquitos Marsh Natural Preserve is one of the last remaining salt marsh areas and waterfowl refuges in southern California. The marsh, coves, and tidepools are rich in sea life: limpets, shore crabs and hermit crabs, mussels, barnacles, sea anemones, and many species of snails and cast-off shells.

This is the perfect place to watch the annual gray whale migration. All year round, you can see Seals, dolphins, porpoises, and sea lions in the ocean. About two hundred species of birds are protected at the reserve, including migratory ones.

Year round Resident shore birds include brown and American white pelicans, black-bellied and snowy plovers, American avocets, western sandpipers, willets, whimbrels, sanderlings, great egrets, and longbilled curlews. Occasionally, visitors may see gray foxes, bobcats, coyotes, and mule deer. Reptile residents include rattlesnakes and various other snakes and species of lizards, including the endangered horned lizard.

The Torrey Pines 2,000-acre reserve contains about 300 endangered and protected species of native plants. These vanishing habitats are home to sand verbena and beach primrose on the beach, as well as California sagebrush, California buckwheat, black sage, and coastal barrel cactus. On the cliffs other high elevations there are many chaparral plants, including chamise, manzanita, ceanothus, California scrub oak, toyon, and mountain mahogany. Many of these scrub plants in particular provide the refreshing herbal fragrance that mixes so incredibly with the ocean breeze.

Before this area was colonized by Spain, the Kumeyaay tribes migrated lived here, and migrated between here, the deserts, and the mountains throughout the seasons. The land was bountiful, and the Kumeyaay would have fished, hunted, collected crustaceans, and gathered seeds, fruit, roots, to create probably a very healthy and tasty diet. The Kumeyaay have left an indelible archaeological and cultural legacy here in San Diego county and they continue to be a strong tribal nation today both here and south of the border in Baja Norte state.

The water is usually so clean and clear here, and because of the lack of shoreline development, and the underwater marine reserve, this constantly ranks as one of the 3 cleanest beaches in SoCal. This is a wonderful rare instance of extremely valuable real estate, both being a wildlife refuge and habitat, and a beautiful escape from civilization for people to enjoy for the most part in harmony.

Moody Skies & La Jolla Sunset - Torrey Pines, California – San Diego Pacific Ocean Beach Adventure – New Video Now Live!

Metallic waves, late afternoon sun on the pacific ocean, this time of day under the towering cliffs of Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California is always a peaceful contemplative time.

In the late afternoon the glints of silver and steel on the ocean turns the gemstone array of sapphires and aquamarines into a metallic glittering display. We’re so lucky today that not only do we get to enjoy the beautiful moody late-afternoon skies here on the beach, but we enjoy dinner on the La Jolla peninsula with an unbelievable panoramic view of the sunset on the Pacific ocean.

This is a great place to sit and watch the sunset and be bathed in the sound of the waves. When the coastal inversion returns after the glorious sunny day, the rays of light and colorful reflections create an incredible living canvas of art. It’s so wonderful to be here when the sea is calm and the waves are just gently lapping at the soft sound, it’s the most soothing sound in the world to me, the second being the desert breeze rustling through the palms.

It’s been an incredible day on the coast here in Torrey Pines and La Jolla, and I’m so glad that we were able to explore my favorite beach together. Swami’s Beach – Encinitas, North County San Diego Pacific Ocean Surf Spot

Swami’s Beach in Encinitas, California is an old-school surf spot in North County San Diego, known for its eclectic, bohemian vibe that feels like something out of the 1960s. It’s even referenced in a Beach Boy song!

While we wait for the coastal inversion to burn off, let’s head up the coast to Encinitas to check out a local North County surf spot called Swami’s Beach. Swami's Beach is named after Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, who was an Indian monk, yogi, and guru who moved to Encinitas in the 1930s. In 1937 he built the Self-Realization Fellowship on the bluffs overlooking Swami's Reef, the name of the surf break off-shore.

What an incredible place to build a spiritual meditation retreat, it certainly inspires a zen mindset. This is different than Black’s Beach in that Palms and vegetation are growing right along the cliff-face, but it is the same in that the cliffs are clearly eroding away. Here at least, we have some maintained, concrete stairs leading down to the beach.

It’s fun to break away from the tourist zone and check out a place that’s under the radar and more frequented by locals. Dozens of surfers are waiting for their lucky wave at Swami’s Reef. It’s a beautiful little sliver of beach down here, very much harking back to the days of old North County’s formerly more eclectic and bohemian surf vibe. There’s still a lot of that up here in North County, but this is a very much luxurious and competitively sought-after place to live these days. Nevertheless it hasn’t lost it’s charm by any means, and if you know where to look, that wonderful, relaxed, creative vibe is certainly still here.

I never stop being amazed at how the wildflowers have evolved to thrive in one of the harshest conditions in North America and be so soft and delicate at the same time.

And I love the way they extend across the desert sand, as far as they can until it’s time for the hot sun to burn them off.

It’s been a very special season of renewal and regeneration in the Anza Borrego Desert, and I feel a sense of healing from the land, something frankly we all need.

The desert plant life is starting to green up after our cold, wet winter.  Three years of intensely destructive drought has scarred the land, but we’re starting to see some regrowth.  This area of the Anza Borrego Desert State Park is called the Mescal Bajada.  If the word mescal sounds familiar to you, that’s because the Kumeyaay word for agave, is mescal with an s, and mezcal with a z is the delicious smoky tequila distilled from roasted hearts of this type of agave plant.  And a bajada is a Spanish word for a huge desert slope area, which creates the perfect conditions for intense wind.

The mythical smoke trees, sagebrush, chuparosa, juniper, and cholla cactus are springing back to life after three intensely destructive years of drought.  Since we are at a higher elevation level here, than when we were in Coyote Canyon in the Borrego Valley, the sages, chia, and sand verbena haven’t quite greened up and flowered yet. As we go further in we’re greeted by ocotillos, arms outstretched, soaring towards the blue sky.

The wind was absolutely whipping down the mountain, and it was impossible to film with the sound.  I might come back here on a calm day and film another video, I really think this site is worth featuring twice. There’s just such an abundance of spiritual energy in this place, and I just find myself continuing to return.

Shelter From The Storm, Palm Desert, CA

Shelter from the Storm helps these women and their children in many different ways including a 24-hour crisis hotline for victims, domestic violence outreach, and providing valuable consultation services to clinical, medical, legal, law enforcement professionals, and local communities about domestic violence.  They operate a community counseling center, and provide basic hygiene, personal care items, and nonperishable food items to clients in the shelter service program and those enrolled in services at the community counseling center.

Martha’s Village & Kitchen is one of the largest providers of homeless and impoverished services in the Coachella Valley and Riverside County with over 8,000 people in need passing through its doors yearly. The organization began in 1990 when the founders served meals to their homeless neighbors, fast forward to 2021 Martha’s now has its main campus located in Indio, CA, and three satellite offices throughout the Coachella Valley. Today, from its campus and satellite offices Martha’s Village offers unique life-changing programs based on the nationally-recognized “continuum of care model” breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty.

Stop Seeking and Start Creating in 2023: New Year Inspirational Message

Happy New Year from Desert Mountain Apothecary!  It’s been a supremely beautiful holiday season here in the California Desert, with wild winter weather, great food, and a siphon’s draw or two of fine spirits. Some years I don’t have any New Year’s resolutions, but this year I’m brimming with them, and most of them are about keeping up with the basics, but some are about new experiences.  For someone who hasn’t been on the healing path for nigh on a decade, it can be overwhelming, and truly counterproductive to make New Year’s resolutions.  They never stick, and in a month or two you’ll be even farther behind than you were because you feel defeated and de-motivated.  

From me, William Z.
