Clearly, I’m in a melancholy mood.

The desaturation of “Pylon“ is one of my favorite things about the cinematography of S6. Visually, it may be my favorite episode of all nine seasons.

It’s an entirely new cinematic vocabulary. It’s deeply emotive, with the absence of vibrancy, the cool tones, the greys, the flinty skies- it’s striking.

Without getting into a deep analysis, we have this very bucolic environment, with the color reduced, and we have Morse sticking out to a degree that is unusual, even for him. He’s not only isolated in terms of location and community, but even more so by being relegated to a dark, graphic uniform; masking his emotions even further with a colossal mustache. Physically, visually, he could not be less integrated into his environment. 

We’ve already discussed the shot of him in the wheat field with the Connemara in the background today, which is in fact, my all-time favorite shot. However, the third runner-up (2nd is the last shot of “Confection”, which really deserves its own post and will get one) is this, below.

There aren’t enough superlatives to talk about what’s happening here. The dinky police vehicle in that odd shade of turquoise, the massive dead tree, the distant car traversing the screen from right to left, his head down, his hands-usually so animated - limply at rest…if you went out of your way to find an illustration of despairing loneliness, absence and isolation, I don’t know that you could do any better than this.

I realize there are probably artistic reasons for doing this but I'm annoyed by color de-saturation in shows and movies. Let's give some examples.

12 Monkeys: lots of gray and brown here.

The Exorcist, 2 hot priests stare at each other in de-saturation land.

Let's compare to gorgeous show Foundation, which has color saturation and good lighting.

I don't use/make character reference sheets, but I'm sure I might know a few who do and this might be useful to others.

Just to make a point, every time I finished a panel of this I would export it as a PNG on the perceptual setting and use it as a color reference for the next panel

PLEASE CHECK YOUR COLOR SETTINGS

EDIT: If you're still having problems, it might help to switch from "Save/Save as" to "Export (as a) Single Layer". Just. Make SURE the box labeled "Expression Color" is set to RGB. I've been messing with this all day, and it looks like this combination of settings will allow exported PNGs to maintain their colors perfectly. To you. So far both Discord and Toyhouse still only display desaturated images and I cannot for the life of me figure out why

still ruminating over Lost In the Book With Spooky Skeletons Part 1, so here's a selection of some of my favorite little bits! (...some more loosely paraphrased than others) (I just feel like Idia has no room to criticize in general, okay)

Oh. OH. I think I've found the problem myself.

The images exported from Procreate Pocket say they're RGB in the metadata and that is apparently the default setting so why question it... but then I looked at the choice of canvases and I've often been choosing Untitled Canvas 2048 x 2048. And next to that?

It says P3.

And "DCI-P3 provides a more extensive color range, especially for professional and cinematic purposes."

And that may be why my colourful art washes out and dulls on being uploaded to Tumblr. My poor choice of canvas means professional grade colours being put onto a consumer quality monitor. I think?

So while I will need a minute to test this theory out... FRIENDS! When choosing a canvas size in Procreate Pocket, check next to the title and choose one that says RGB!

I will also need to work out which canvas size is best for working with Tumblr compression because that can become an issue too. It can apparently cause blurriness on uploading.

There are canvases of a similar size that are RGB so perhaps if that change works this is solved. But it doesn't make me a wizard. Just a dumbass. In my defense I had only seen this desaturation issue discussed showing completely different settings for different programs, and learned about this particular one today. Never touched digital before - I bought PP in August!

I wonder if I can change the canvas format on the art I've already done... probably not unless I copypasta to newly created canvases one by one, or import the lineart only and recolour. FUCK.

But then again it's best I at least found all this out now.

I still have quite a way to go on my art skills and will hopefully have got on top of all this before they improve and there's a piece I really don't want ruined.

Women Talking, directed by Sarah Polley. Source: Library DVD.

A group of women from an isolated religious order gather to discuss what actions to take after their colony has experienced brutal violence and gas-lighting from their own men. They are trying to determine whether all the women should stay and fight, or leave the colony. There are women and girls of all ages taking part in the discussion.

This is a great film, I was into it. Unfortunately I had a really hard time seeing the people's faces and expressions and…anything at all. Below is a still demonstrating the de-saturated quality of this film. It all just runs together; each object or body blends in with everything around it, it's all just gray, brown and black. The object that stands out most is a bucket in the corner of the frame.

My TV is an older one and I'm playing the disc on the older X-box; maybe this looked better on a big screen in a theater. Maybe the settings on my TV are off; but looking at stills online, it's still hard to see anything.

Maybe the Barbie movie will bring back color in films. One can hope.
