Tumblr media Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 Cat Person (The_She_Devil) - 72K, shrunkyclunks - Bucky's the SHIELD agt tasked with bringing newly defrosted Steve up to speed on the 21st century - there's really hot sex in a secluded cabin PLUS feelings. All around deliciousness.
😊 Dark Carnivals: Modern Horrors and the Origins of American Empire (W. Scott Poole, author; Enrique McGavin, narrator) - interesting, edifying, depressing. Not as much discusssion of the films as I expected/would have liked - like 70% rundown of USian imperial activities of the last two centuries, 30% horror/scifi film discussion. [In hindsight, should have read this in text, as there were passages I really wanted to highlight/quote and the narration was…weird. Voice sound & tone was OK but there were lots of bizarre pauses. Sometimes when reading a quotes from a notable figure, the narrator did do some very credible imitations of Clinton & Reagan.]
😍 Waking Up Slow (odetteandodile) - 44K, shrunkyclunks - single dad Bucky, living in a isolated lighthouse in Canada, finds an amesiac, just-thawed Steve Rogers washed up on his beach… (reread for stucky bookclub, forever fave!)
😊 for a good time, call… (EvanesDust) - 46K, sterek, omegaverse fake-dating - solidly enjoyable
😊 Maurice (E.M. Forester, author; Peter Firth, narrator) - read this for a discord book club, can't believe I hadn't read it before & it's been 30 years since I watched the movie. Forester's language & turn of phrase is amazing.
🥰 And My Love Life Waits for Me (Bittersweet_in_Boston (author); Alaskan_Outsider (artist)) - 62K, shrunkyclunks soulmate fic - satisfyingly enjoyable, not nearly as dark as the tags might make you think
💖💖 +190K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Own Me series (nrnyx) - TW: Jordan/Derek /Stiles, 62K (series) - Stiles gets picked up by husbands Jordan & Derek at the club and what starts as a very hot one night stand becomes so much more. Very werewolfy omegaverse stuff. Hot quality smut but also action-y plot!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Goncharov (berlincorpography) - Goncharov (1973): OFC / OFC, 6K - very clever & funny fic featuring disaster lesbians, film criticism & academia
Once Upon a Time (softestpunk) - The Sandman: Dreamling, 14K - just so soft & warm, pure delight! They're both single dads! Falling in love! Dream is a children's librarian!

DAVEY SUICIDE @DAVEYSUICIDE — Made From Fire Review
DAVEY SUICIDE has tamed the underground by combining arena sized gutter-goth-rock, sleaze and theatrics into a “nu” brand of industrial rock.
The band features Davey Suicide along with Drayven Davidson, Needlz, Niko Gemini, and Derek Obscura.
Together they purify heavy metal, whilst interpreting industrial and punk, to create hymns that are as erosive as they are attractive

The Who, Cream, Beatles eram preferência.
E em 1972 ele lança "Buck & The Snake Stretchers".
Seu terceiro disco de 1973 intitulado “That´s what I´m Here For”, obteve baixas vendagens e críticas negativas.
“Dancing on the Edge”(86) e “Hot Wires” (87).

The search for Alaska's warm-blooded wild bumblebees
The search for Alaska's warm-blooded wild bumblebees
https://theministerofcapitalism.com/blog/the-search-for-alaskas-warm-blooded-wild-bumblebees/
Tumblr media
This story originally appeared the Atlas Obscura and is part of the Climate desk collaboration.
“People don’t come to Denali and other Alaskan parks to look at bumblebees, but they should,” says Jessica Rykken, an entomologist at Denali National Park and Preserve. The state of the “Last Frontier” may be known for its large wildlife. to go to the moose, but on a smaller scale, the diversity of bumblebees (or bees, depending on who you ask for it) is unusually high and powers entire ecosystems.
“Incorporating the next generation of plants to provide habitat for caribou or moose or any large herbivore, and then the carnivores that depend on them, is all tied to pollinators,” says Casey Burns, a wildlife biologist, with the Alaska Office of Land Management. . “Without a doubt, I think they’re the most important wildlife group for ecological function.”
Bumblebees are not the only native pollinators in the US state. There are dozens of other species of native bees, and native flies also play an important role (as do several species of butterflies). But Alaskan bumblebees stand out so much in numbers: “We generally have a fairly low diversity of bees, but we have a very high proportion of bumblebees,” Rykken says, and in the reasons for their success. And while many species of bumblebees in the lower 48 are declining, Alaska members of the genus Bombus they seem to thrive. Now, researchers and conservationists are embarking on an unprecedented effort to find out how many bees, including bumblebees, are boiling around their huge and largely unrequited state. The first project of the Alaska Bee Atlas is underway and bumblebees will play a leading role.
Of the nearly 50 species of bumblebees documented in the United States, nearly half can be found in Alaska, including four species that are not found anywhere else in the country. With a thick body and covered in thick, insulating hair (in a so-called Zoom, Rykken holds a board of fat, hairy, nailed specimens, some the size of a thumb), bumbles have other survival skills in cold weather, including, well, twerking. While bees can generally vibrate flight muscles quickly, regardless of flight, to generate heat, bumblebees are especially good.
“They use these flight muscles to raise body temperature 30 degrees in five minutes,” Rykken says. This rapid rise in heat allows them to fly on cold, even snowy days, when there are other insects on the ground. And while other social bees, including bees, will group together to keep their queen, brood and mutuals warm, bumblebees can survive alone. A Bombus the queen can transfer the heat generated with the flight muscles to the abdomen to keep the eggs warm.
“They thermoregulate incredibly,” says enterologist Derek Sikes, curator of the University of Alaska Museum’s insect collection. Sikes says bumblebees are “actually warm-blooded: they generate heat, it’s just not constant, like mammals do. But it’s internal, not just for sunbathing.”
The natural life cycle of Bombus the species adapts to Alaska’s long winters and short summers. In August, when the first frosts usually arrive, the queen begins a long hibernation underground, alone. It emerges in the spring, finds a nesting place, and produces worker bees and eventually possible new queens and males to mate with. As August approaches, successfully mated, the new queens will find a place to rest during the winter. “Everyone (the old queen, the workers, the males) dies,” Rykken says. Although many other social bee species overwinter in groups of thousands, the bumblebee’s solo strategy requires fewer resources and is more efficient for its environment.

TDP 757: #DoctorWho Gallifrey Time War- Volume 1 from @BigFinish
Four new chapters in the Gallifrey saga.
The Time Lords and the Daleks have opposed one another across millennia. But now, their conflict tips into an all-out Time War, and nowhere across the universe of spacetime is safe.
Battle plans will be drawn, allies recruited, and innocents caught in the crossfire.
Gallifrey is going to war, and the cosmos will never be the same again.
1. Celestial Intervention by David Llewellyn
The Temporal Powers are under threat. It is only a matter of time before the Daleks attack.
Now CIA Coordinator, Romana must protect the interests of Gallifrey, while dealing with demands from President Livia and an increasingly powerful War Council.
As allies are whittled away, the Time Lords are drawn into a conflict they can no longer avoid…
2. Soldier Obscura by Tim Foley
Braxiatel has always planned for contingencies. As hostilities escalate, he takes Ace into a deadly region of spacetime – The Obscura – to locate an ancient research station.
But Ace is about to learn more about Irving Braxiatel than anyone should know.
Some soldiers are ready for this fight, but some will not make it through the first round.
3. The Devil You Know by Scott Handcock
The Time War has begun in earnest, and Romana must think the unthinkable. For a most dangerous mission, she selects the most dangerous warrior – the Master.
But he will not be alone. Leela accompanies her old enemy as they begin an unusual interrogation.
What does Finnian Valentine know? And can Leela and the Master ever truly be on the same side?
4. Desperate Measures by Matt Fitton
The Dalek Emperor attacks a vital Time Lord outpost. Victory would be a devastating blow to Gallifrey.
Romana is caught in the machinations of a President who sees control slipping away. Is it time to bargain with the War Council, or perhaps to parlay with even more dangerous parties?
The Time War has barely begun, and for Gallifrey, desperate times are already here...

Gallifrey: Time War (Big Finish)
Latest Review: Writer: Matt Fitton, Scott Handcock, Tim Foley, David Llewellyn Director: Scott Handcock Featuring Louise Jameson, Lalla Ward, Sophie Aldred, Seán Carlsen, Miles Richardson, Sir Derek Jacobi CBE, Nicholas Briggs Big Finish  Released on: Wednesday 28th February 2018 Running Time: 5 hours Just how did the Time Lords get into such a major conflict with the Daleks?  Big Finish's latest entry into their Time War saga attempts to answer just that via their long-running series Gallifrey, which has long focused on the adventures of Romana and Leela on the Time Lord homeworld, often in Political and Spy thrillers. It will be difficult to write this review without Spoilers, so reader beware, while I will try my best to limit them, but this review may feature an element of SPOILERS AHEAD! (Skip to Final Paragraph for my recommendation) Celesital Intervention, the opening episode revolves around Romana (now heading up the Celestial Intervention Agency) and her increasing worry about the War Council and it's Secret Operations.  She and her CIA cohort Narvin recruit Leela to at first spy on the War Council, and then desperately recruit her again to travel into the Death Zone to see what the War Council may be cooking up there.  Meanwhile, a fellow time traveling race, and Time Lord ally, have had their planet destroyed by the Daleks, and the remaining 500 refugees from the Planet come to Gallifrey seeking asylum.  While the War Council initially opposes letting Refugees onto their homeworld, and thus open them up to more risk, political games are played and the poor souls are allowed in...but at a price that Romana fears may be too high, as it gives the War Council even more power and free reign.  In the end, the President Livia (the new TIme Lord President), declares War upon the Daleks...the Time War officially begins, and we find out that some of the creepy stuff the War Council is up to will have some long-lasting repercussions.  This opening episode begins the set off with a bang, and Lalla Ward's increasingly desperate and frantic performance sells it.  You can just feel the stress and worry of what is happening to her and her world pushing down on her, and making her worry were they will end up when it is all said and done (and as we all know, it is nowhere pleasant).  While the whole cast is great, Ward's frustrated Romana makes this political thriller all the more entertaining.  The box set continues with Soldier Obscura, and sees Ace and Braxiatel on a mission into The Obscura, a strange deadly region in Time and Space, which may hold a secret weapon within it. Ace is working for the CIA, having been left on Gallifrey by the Doctor at some point (at what exact point in Ace's mildly confusing spin-off material life this takes place, I've no real idea, but it doesn't really matter to the story), and she and Braxiatel head off into this dangerous area of space and meet Danna, a Time Lord mentor of Braxiatel who was once one of the best marksmen ever known, but has been living for years alone posted in the Obscura.  The Daleks have been trying to break into this region of space for a while, occasionally transforming themselves by adding wings and other mutations hoping to get in and get a weapon that could win the Time War.  But can Ace trust Braxiatel?  While I found the second entry to contain good performances and some interesting Time War ideas, I think it just didn't work for me in the same way the opening episode did. That's not to say it is bad (fr from it), but it wasn't as great as I felt the opening was.  The reveals of what the Weapon was or might have been felt underwhelming, and the fake-out death of Ace is too predictable...you kind of know they won't kill her off (though really, why not?), and then after the theme music is played it is revealed that Braxiatel has wiped her memory and abandoned her on some random planet. I think this episode had some interesting concepts and good performances, but I wasn't as engaged with Ace or Braxiatel in the way I was with Ward or the supporting cast in the opener.  With the Braxiatel/Ace plan not panning out and knowing that the Doctor has sworn off helping the Time Lords in this War, Romana decides to enlist the help of the other major Time Lord Renegade: the Master.  In The Devil You Know, they recall the Master to Gallifrey (the call he received in the middle of the War Master boxset), and he is tasked with retrieving a man called Finnian Valentine, who supposedly has knowledge of a weapon that is so powerful it could deter the Daleks and maybe even end the war.  Of course, things are never so simple, particularly in a war waging havoc upon Time and Space.  To keep the Master in check, Leela is assigned to go with him, and when they arrive on Valentine's alleged whereabouts, they find not one, but two versions of him.  One whose race was wiped out by the Time Lords, and another whose race only survived through the help of the Time Lords keeping the Daleks at bay.  Both are a little uneasy about helping The Master and Leela however.  And when the interrogations begin to go nowhere, The Master's more ruthless techniques must take hold, at a cost higher than anyone would like.  Major Spoilers here - learning that what they are after is not a weapon but a planet with a major power source, the Master disposes of Leela and sends her out into the Vortex in the midst of the Time War, hoping to leave her fate forever ambiguous to the Doctor...of course her fate was explored in the final War Doctor set, in which we had seen her in a far more fragile and lost state.  The Master then heads off to Arcking where the alleged power source is held, that story picks back up in The Good Master, the third story in the War Master boxset.  The Devil You Know is excellent.  Derek Jacobi once again gets the chance to relish in the role he only os briefly got to play on television, and this episode is not another great showcase of just how great he is, it also fills in the gap of his own War Master set.  Louise Jameson is also quite good in this, as is Bryan Dick as the two Valentines, playing two slightly different versions of the same person quite well.  Just great performances, a great story, and another exciting audio performance from the great Derek Jacobi.  The set concludes with Desperate Measures, which focuses on a new election for the President of the High Council. This section of the review has definite SPOILERS.  Livia no longers wishes to be a War President and looks for a way to get out with her dignity intact.  When her appointed successor is a General that is clearly being propped up by the War Council, Romana decides that she will challenge him and run to retake the office (offering to give her life for the seat, because she can only be elected President for another term if she has regenerated into a new body.  But when her secret attempts at trying to negotiate with the Daleks become public, it pretty much ends her chances.  Meanwhile, Narvin heads into the Death Zone to try and destroy the Resurrection machine which plans to bring dead Time Lords back from death in order to fight in the War...but the agent that is meant to be helping him betrays him.  And so during the new President's installation as Leader of the High Council, Livia, and the War Council's real plan comes to light. The General's familial ties to Rassilon are used for one purpose...to utilize the MAtrix and the Resurrection machine, along with a living descendant of Rassilon, to resurrect the famed former leader of the Time Lords. This finale is excellent.  Ward is great, and the entire plot to bring Rassilon back from the dead is a lovely way to give us a cliffhanger for more.  When it comes to political games, espionage, and deep cuts into canon, this set really can't be beaten. This was an excellent set, and I am genuinely looking forward to the next entry in this saga. Big Finish has really outdone themselves with their Time War entries...from the War Doctor sets starring John Hurt, to the War Master boxset, and now with the ongoing Eighth Doctor and Gallifrey: Time War sets...they are really exploring this untapped era of Who-lore with nothing but top-notch storytelling, almost as if for years when they didn't have the New Series license, they were just thinking it over and over for a decade.  They've been waiting for this, and they aren't wasting their chance. If I have a real criticism, it is that despite their best attempts to make this set easier to dive into for new fans, it really is better listened to with some background into other stories. You don't really need to listen to all of the Gallifrey audio series (I've only heard the first series from over a decade ago, which has little to do with this beyond introducing some key characters)...but listening to some War Doctor stories or the War Master set will definitely help in getting the big picture here.  I would say if you wanted to jump into some of Big Finish's Time War stuff, don't start here, but definitely GET HERE.  It's all well worth a listen, and they are killing it on the Time War stuff.  http://reviews.doctorwhonews.net/2018/02/gallifrey_time_war_big_finish.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

A long weekend in Edinburgh
My sister and I went to Edinburgh, Scotland for a long weekend in April. It was a lovely city to visit and it was really easy to get around on foot. We also went on a tour outside of the city.
Tumblr media
Where I stayed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We stayed at a place called Edin B&B. It has a brilliant location as it’s situated in the old town. The room was cosy and the bed was very comfortable. There were two bathrooms, shared between the rooms, and a kitchen for everyone to use. The facilities were good, and our host Derek was ever so welcoming and eager to help or answer any questions we might have. It’s close to a lot of the main tourist attractions and there’s also a Tesco Express just up the hill, if you want to cook for yourself. I would recommend staying here. Rating: 5/5
Things to do in Edinburgh:
Calton Hill
Tumblr media
Calton Hill is an easy walk up from the new town area in Edinburgh. It doesn’t take long to walk up to the top and you get a lovely view of the city and of Arthur’s seat, the old volcano behind Calton Hill.
Edinburgh Castle
Tumblr media
It’s also quite an easy walk up to Edinburgh Castle. You can take the steps up from the Grassmarket area, or walk up the Royal Mile. We didn’t pay to go inside the castle, but we did enjoy the view of the city.
Royal Mile
Tumblr media
The Royal Mile is the main street that runs from Edinburgh Castle all the way down to Holyrood Palace, which is where the Queen stays when she visits Edinburgh. It’s full of souvenir shops, interesting closes that take you from street to street and plenty of old buildings that are worth taking a look at.
Camera Obscura
Tumblr media
Camera Obscura is on the Royal Mile, quite close to the castle. It’s packed with interactive illusions and fun for all ages. I would recommend going early to avoid large crowds. We also went on a weekday for this reason. There’s also a quick camera obscura show of Edinburgh on the roof and the view from up there is pretty decent too. We had a lot of fun, but if you’re sensitive to lights and illusions, it might not be your cup of tea.
Victoria Street
Tumblr media
This windy street is colourful and packed with cute little shops. The shop that inspired J.K. Rowling to create the Weasley brothers’ shop, in Harry Potter, is also on this street, and there’s plenty of cool Harry Potter memorabilia in that shop if your interested. There’s also a Harry Potter merchandise shop right across the street.
Scott Monument
Tumblr media
This gothic tower was built in memory of Scottish author Sir Walter Scott and is 60 metres high. I heard that you could go up it, but we never did. It’s difficult to miss in Edinburgh due to it’s height! haha.
Prince Street and Prince’s Street Park
Tumblr media
Prince Street is the place to go if you plan to do a lot of shopping. You’ll also find more shops in the streets behind it. When you’ve had enough of shopping you can head down to the fountain in the Prince Street park and enjoy the view of Edinburgh castle.
National Museum of Scotland
Tumblr media
This museum has free entry for everyone and it spans over several floors and rooms filled with interesting things to look at.
Arthur’s Seat
Tumblr media
If you want some fresh air then I suggest a walk up Arthur’s seat. It’s part of an extinct volcano and there are plenty of well-marked paths. You can either hike up to the very top, or you can take a shorter walk along the lower cliff edge. The walk along the cliff edge is quite easy and this is also another great place to come for a good view of the city.
Outlander tour:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also went on the Outlander filming locations day tour with Highland Explorer Tours. Our guide was called Kirsty and she was great. She told us loads of interesting information about Scotland’s history and Outlander. We felt like we had just the right amount of time at each stop and it was a very relaxing experience. The tour costs around 50 pounds and it stops at Doune Castle, Culross, Falkland, Midhope Castle and Linlithgow Palace. You had to pay an additional 6 pounds to get into Doune Castle, but it was worth it and the audio guides they gave you had sections read by Sam Heughan who plays Jamie Fraser in the Outlander series.
Food and drink:
Pumpkin Brown
Tumblr media
This little café serves only vegan food and we had two of their smoothie bowls. We had the Acai and the Dragonfruit ones. They came with plenty of topping and cost around 7 pounds. The cakes they had looked really good too.
Hula
Tumblr media
This café was on Victoria Street and it was quite popular. We had the Chicken Harissa sandwhich which came with a little side salad and it was very good. I also bought their chocolate haze smoothie twice, as it was so good. I would say that the prices are normal for a healthfood café.
Graze at Grassmarket
If you fancy a salad or a sandwich/wrap then this is the place to come. It’s perfect if you’re going on a picnic. You choose what you want from the salad bar and the staff pick it out for you. We bought salads and took them with us up to Arthur’s seat for lunch with a view.
The Three Sisters
If you’re looking for a lively pub, this is the place to go. It was packed on a Saturday night with live music, followed by a DJ. The pub itself is large, but there’s also a large outside area underneath a roof and there are several little food and drink stands.
General tips and info:
-It was quite cold, so bring warm clothes. Even though the sun was shining, the wind could be freezing.
-I recommend getting a return ticket for the Airlink busses from the airport and into the city. They run every 10 minutes, apart from certain times late at night. They made the trip to and from the airport very easy and there’s a little kiosk where you can buy tickets right by their stop at the airport.
-Emma

Wrld Snatchers: Relax, There's a Chance It'll All End Up With a Blast
Tumblr media
Relax, There’s a Chance It Will All End Up With a Blast The danger of normalizing something so terminally outrageous is that it makes us all numb, complacent, vulnerable. Suddenly, yesterday’s inconceivable is today’s inevitable, and what we’ve been resisting against for millennia finally breaks through and flips us all into ashes. Take meteorites, for instance – what? you thought we were talking…

My media this week (25 Feb - 2 Mar 2024)
Tumblr media
nancy is the superstar of this show. she's in it for 5 seconds, drops the best line, steals the scene
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 What I Used To Be (thepinupchemist) - 117K, stucky, omegaverse trauma recovery fic - a relatively light tone, mostly escapist fic focusing on the recovery, not dwelling overly much on trauma details, kidfic but I really dug it
😍 The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (Amina al-Sirafi #1) (Shannon Chakraborty, author; Lameece Issaq & Amin El Gamal, narrator) - just gonna KJ Charle's review bc she's better with words than I'll ever be: "Good god, this was incredible fun. Absolutely cracking. A sort of take on Sinbad but with more historical accuracy (apart from the demons, marids, etc), with a middle-aged retired lady pirate getting the crew back together to take on a Frankish coloniser/sorceror/baddie. It's just fabulous exuberant fun." I cannot wait for more!
😊 The Werewolf Companion (MargaretKire) - traumatized derek hale, intriguing larger worldbuilding, hot, wet, messy sex that really leaned into the 'definitely not human' aspect of werewolf fucking without going full xeno. super enjoyable
🥰 My Man Jeeves (Jeeves #1) (PG Wodehouse) - our intro to Bertie & Jeeves 💖 [via Serial Reader app]
💖💖 +50K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
A Fine Cure from Fennel Seed (Lucius Parhelion (Parhelion)) - original work, 10K - absolutely delightful amuse-bouche of an original fic; short, hot, slapsticky hilarious, set in the '30s
