Solid color master paintings are a feat of impressive knowledge that takes YEARS if not DECADES to learn. You need to know the right canvas to choose, and all the properties of said canvas. How to mix enough of the same color of paint so there are no inconsistencies in hue and pigment. Knowing what color/colors to choose based on color theory and how humans react instinctively to certain colors. How to paint complete layers without creating brush marks and having complete control over layers of paint. Knowing how long it will take for each layer to dry so that you don’t accidentally pull anything up when you paint the next layer. Again, after waiting long enough for a layer to dry, having your paint be the exact same color after it’s settled. And doing this on a large canvas, where you can’t do everything from the same angle or all in one brush stroke. Where you have to take into account the amount of drying time one side of the canvas took versus the other. They may not “mean” anything, or be representations of a tangible thing, but they are masterpieces of craftsmanship.
Even ones by people like Rothko or the textured monocolor paintings by Klein utilize this knowledge. They are playing with color, and emotions attached to those colors. You might not see anything other than the color, but your brain has a different emotional response when seeing solid yellow versus blue, for example. The point of these pieces is to stand back and admire them from afar, taking in everything. But you don’t have to, either. If you don’t like it, you don’t like it. But you absolutely can’t drop fucking paint from a store and get this, or do it yourself.
actuaally fuuckingggg hate people who dont like art in any meaningful way unless its a drawing of batman mixed with superman or some shit. All those videos where people "destroy modern art" by putting a random object in a museum and insulting people when they take pictures of it are so irritating. Like yeah im sure some of the people taking pics are kind of annoying but most people are just trying to find greater meaning and beauty in things especially when theyre in a museum specifically to do that. You arent badass for not liking art youre just boring and refuse to find something interesting or beautiful in things you have already decided you hate
