Caine is a former soldier who lost everything and lives as a shell of the man who had the world, but he didn’t want the world. Weirdly his acceptance of nothing is better than his acceptance of life.

Otto is a doctor but he’s never really cared for patients. A sick kid who lost everything he knew to death, he became a doctor not because he cared for humans but because he wanted to find a way to avoid death. The apocalypse is his safe haven, where all the rules that kept him sane broke apart

Kath is a photographer, but she can’t do that anymore. All of her dreams shattered along with the world. She can’t get her hands on a camera, all she can do is run. She doesn’t odd jobs to survive, but she’s alone. Otto and Caine are like her big brothers but she’s angry and nothing can stop that.

The Deathbound without the apocalypse AU makes me so sad

They meet once at a bar, Caine and Otto fall in love for a night, Kath finds people who weirdly comfort her

and they never see each other again, Caine avoids that street because he can’t lose his resolve again when he sees Otto’s face. Otto waits endlessly for the people who made him feel alive. Kath never sees either of them again because it was a night of desperation and she forgot to get their information.

They suffer alone, but in one night of drinking they become new people. It genuinely depresses me sm
