Hayden with fan Jessica Shea, who first met him in 2006 and has since met him three times, each time wearing a shirt with a photo of their last encounter. From her facebook post describing their most recent photo op in Denver:
ā€œWhen Hayden turned to me and saw me at the photo booth after our autograph session he got the biggest grin on his face. Like I could visually see the exhaustion, and then when he saw me his entire face just lit up. He said ā€˜THERE YOU ARE! COME HERE YOU!ā€™ gave me the BIGGEST hug, looked down at me and said ā€˜Alright, letā€™s do this thing! What pose do you want to do!?ā€™ I was a little flustered because I didnā€™t expect him to ask and he was so enthusiastic, so I said ā€˜Oh I donā€™t know! What do you think? Keep doing what weā€™ve been doing?ā€™ and he goes ā€˜Itā€™s up to you! Do you want to do something different or keep it the same?!ā€™ So I said ā€˜Letā€™s do the same pointing at the shirt pose for this one.ā€™ And he said ā€˜Alright, letā€™s do the same pose this time around.ā€™ Once we finished our photo he gave me the biggest hug goodbye and he whispered in my ear ā€˜Iā€™m so thankful for you, thank you for being here.ā€™ šŸ„¹ā€

RoboScrub (1991) by Denning Mobile Robotics for Windsor Industries, Denver Colorado. During the late 1980s, Denning explored a wide range of potential markets including industrial floor cleaning robots. RoboScrub is an autonomous laser-guided industrial floor cleaning robot, manufactured under license by Windsor Industries. It has two drive wheels at the front, each one driven by a variable speed DC motor, and two rear swivel castors. The cleaning mechanism is driven by a third motor, and the whole thing can run for up to five hours on a single charge. The RoboScrub is pictured above in the Denning family photo. "Floor cleaning may not seem the sexiest industry in town, but a year earlier I had seen this company in Amsterdam with an amazing exhibit at Interclean, the industry's largest trade show. Taking pride of place in the trades hall was their RoboScrub, a beautiful blue and white robotic floor scrubber, cleaning a section of demonstration floor, by itself, all day long. Now that was sexy. ... Obviously I was excited about seeing RoboScrub, but a little apprehensive. That was until I saw it. This machine was priced at several tens of thousands of dollars, almost $70K, and could only work between prepared sets of bar-coded reflectors installed by a surveyor at measured coordinates around the space to be cleaned. On examination of the machine, I was greeted with the technical complexity of dozens of computer boards, numerous sensor systems, masses of electronics and thousands of yards of cabling, all of which seemed to impress the staff around the booth, but which disappointed me. My thought was that this was the hard way to do it." ā€“ Allan Branch, Save the Day: How to Fix Any Failed or Failing Company Without Downsizing.

MR. BUNGLE MELVINS Ā ā˜† SPOTLIGHTS ā˜… The Showbox, Seattle
Ā  Photo Review by Chris Schanz
One might ask what would bring me out of retirement? Was I retired? What the hell have I been doing for the past three years? All things Doomed and Stoned have been in flux for me. Iā€™ve been focusing on my day job. Iā€™ve been focusing on my family. Iā€™ve been focusing on my garden. All this focusing has left me nearsighted. Blurry. The COVID era left me with a shitty hangover (not long COVID ā€“ Iā€™m just trying to forget that shit and move on!). Sure ā€“ Iā€™ve shot shows, band portraits, weddings, funerals yadda yadda fucking yadda. I wanted a sign that the universe is ready for my gifts, once again.
Enter Mr. Bungle and The Melvins. The Geek Show Tour, sponsored by Ipecac Records celebrates both the vast accomplishments of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomas, Mr. Bungle) and The Melvins ā€“ on their 40th anniversary! The perfect lure to get me off my ass and feel like I actually can contribute something to music, art and photography in general without licking the taint of Instagram and an AI-generated algorithmic overlord soon set to devour us, Titans, Gods and all.
The Showbox at the Market is the perfect set. I feel at home there, usually right by the soundboard. So many shows seen there ā€“ Sonic Youth, Nudedragons (Soundgarden), Brothers Of the Sonic Cloth, Sleep, Uncle Acid, Bell Witch, Graveyard, Chelsea Wolfe, The Black Angels ā€“ on and on, and on and on. Itā€™s by far Seattleā€™s best concert hall, IMHO.
SPOTLIGHTS
I admit. I wasnā€™t prepared for Spotlights. A buddy of mine in Denver by way of San Francisco said theyā€™re sweetly DOOMY. I was in. I got three songs to fall in love. Head over heels! Words escape my brain, only memories of sweet, subsonic joy flowing through my chest and brain. I followed up with Sarah Quintenero after the show at the merch booth, loading up on their vinyl. Iā€™m blasting ā€œTidalsā€ on vinyl while writing this in my cave, but ā€œAlchemy for the Deadā€ is a MASTERPIECE! Iā€™ve been binging on their Bandcamp all week now. Bold, deep bass fuzz, ethereal vocals and serrated guitar riffs. My new summer soundtrack.
Theyā€™re still on tour ā€“ and I highly advise you to see them now!
Alchemy For The Dead by Spotlights
Spotlights Setlist
"The Alchemist" (2023ā€™s Alchemy For The Dead)
"Sunset Burial" (2023ā€™s Alchemy For The Dead)
"Algorithmic" (2023ā€™s Alchemy For The Dead)
"False Gods" (2023ā€™s Alchemy For The Dead)
"Part 4" (2020ā€™s We Are All Atomic)

MELVINS
This brings me back to the Melvins. The force that shaped my twenties in Seattle. My band Fuzzbud had a six-degrees-of-Kevin Bacon thing with a Morton, WA / Monteseno, WA, somebodyā€™s cousin played in a band that opened forā€¦whatevs. We tuned to DUH flat and had a good time. BUTā€¦The Melvins were always a mainstay in any of my playlists.
King Buzzo did NOT disappoint! I was singing along from the photo pit. I was kidding beforehand that there should be some sort of SNL skit ā€“ a play by play commentary of the photo pit action. Think Howard Cosell announcing each of the photogs falling over each other for the shots. I thought it was funny, anyways. Iā€™m a dork.
ANYWHOO. Buzzo provides! Daleā€™s a GOD. I got my HEALTHY fix of Houdini, culminating in a THREE BASS OVERLOAD on Night Goat with Sara Qintenero from Spotlights and Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle joining Steve McDonald to rumble your bunghole. What did I miss by NOT seeing the tour finale in San Francisco? A reunion of Fantomas (Mike, Buzz and Dave Lombardo)! When these guys get together, (black) magic always happens!
The Bride Screamed Murder by Melvins
Melvins Setlist
"I Canā€™t Shake It" (1998 split with Cosmic Psychos, Some Girls/I Canā€™t Shake It)
"Zodiac" (1990ā€™s Bullhead)
"Copache" (1993ā€™s Houdini)
"I Want to Hold Your Hand" (2018ā€™s Pinkus Abortion Technician - Beatles Cover)
"Hammering" (2022ā€™s Bad Mood Rising)
"Never Say Youā€™re Sorry" (2022ā€™s Bad Mood Rising)
"Evil New War God" (2010ā€™s The Bride Screamed Murder)
"Let It All Be" (1999ā€™s The Bootlicker)
"Honey Bucket" (1993ā€™s Houdini)
"Revolve" (1994ā€™s Stoner Witch)
"Night Goat" (1993ā€™s Houdini - with Steve McDonald, Spotlights Sarah Quintero and Mr. Bungle bass Trevor Dunn on basses)

MR. BUNGLE
The main event. I knew they led with the Mr. Rogers theme on most nights. ADORABLE! But to my surprise, and delight! They performed the John Sebastian theme to ā€œWelcome Back Kotterā€! FUCK YES. Iā€™m a Sweathog and everyone knows it! We would also be treated to the Pepto Bismol jingle not too far into the set.
I was wanting, wishing for a few more songs from 1991ā€™s Mr. Bungle release, primarily some ā€œSqueeze Me Macaroniā€ and ā€œStubb-A-Dubā€ action. Stubb was my go-to track in our house in college. After many a trip, I believed I was the proverbial ā€œfamily dogā€ to our tribeā€¦just elated to be along for the ride scrambling from party to party. Luckily for me, I got some ā€œMy Ass Is On Fireā€ and I was satiated. ā€œSpeak Spanish Or Dieā€ brought me right back to my thrash and skating days (Days. Rolled my ankle on the half-pipe and drove the crew to all the spots after that). Van Halenā€™s Loss of Control? A TOTAL surprise and I was elated! Ear to ear grins and giggles!
I came for the Melvins, Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo, but I left with a deep adoration for Spotlights and a 365-day calendar of ā€œThe Many O-Faces of Scott Ianā€ and thatā€™s more than OK. Iā€™m in love. Thank you, Scott, for fulfilling this schoolboyā€™s adolescent dreams, 30 years later!
The Night They Came Home by Mr. Bungle
Mr. Bungle Setlist
"Welcome Back" (John Sebastian cover)
"Bungle Grind"
"Eracist"
"Spreading the Thighs of Death"
"Loss for Words" (Corrosion of Conformity cover)
"Hypocrites"
"Speak English or Die" (Stormtroopers of Death cover) (changed to "Speak Spanish or Die")
"Glutton for Punishment"
"Anarchy Up Your Anus"
"Methematics"
"Hell Awaits" (Slayer cover) (intro)
"True/Cold War/True"
"Raping Your Mind"
"World Up My Ass" (Circle Jerks cover) (with Michael Crain)
"Sudden Death"
Encore: "Loss of Control" (Van Halen cover)
Encore: "My Ass Is on Fire" (with PEP tag)

September 1st - October 10th
Tumblr media
We stopped by our friends, Marg and Kens place on September 3rd,to say hello and drop off some excess smoked salmon. Their spectacular view delivered a nice rainbow over the first US Coast Guard station on Ediz spit.
Tumblr media
We attended Gae's summer church picnic on the 4th, where shade and cool temps had her bundling up.
Tumblr media
We took a walk to the docks at the Lake Crescent Lodge where the frigid and clear water looks way better than I'm sure it would feel.
Tumblr media
The kids waited patiently and quickly assumed the closest spot to Mom on our return home.
Tumblr media
Our friend Terry came over to teach Gae how to use Google Sheets to track our expenses... surrounded by dogs, of course:-)
Tumblr media
And when I say surrounded, I mean used like furniture!
Tumblr media
The sun popped out on the 7th, so Gae tried out one of the new (used) chairs with the built in shade cover... nice!
Tumblr media
We got out to the Spruce Railroad trail that followed the northern coast of Lake Crescent on the 10th... super nice, new, paved trail:-)
Tumblr media
I tried out the kayak I purchased to replace the too-heavy canoe on the 14th... much better and easier to transport. This is the view from the Ediz hook side of Port Angeles bay, looking back at PA and Hurricane Ridge further south.
Tumblr media
Gae and I took the dogs for a walk on the Discovery Trail west of Crescent Lake, where Scrappy and Raina ran a good 3 miles for the 2 that we walked.
Tumblr media
I was thrilled to find some Sparassis (Cauliflower Mushroom) along the trail... yummy!
Tumblr media
My niece, Allie, stopped by on the 18th and 19th for visits on her way to meet her Sister and friends for an Alaska cruise. We enjoyed her immensely and were so happy we got to see her!
Tumblr media
We drove to Seattle for a Dr's appointment and to send Gae off on a trip to Denver after a week's stay. Raina settled in pretty well.
Tumblr media
I took our son-in-law Ben (and Rob) up to my favorite mushroom patch off Stampede Pass, where we were slightly early to find the usual mother-load of chanterelles.
Tumblr media
Rob enjoyed the trip as well.
Tumblr media
We checked out the mushroom booth at the West Seattle Sunday Market, which always amazes me with the variety of cultivated mushrooms.
Tumblr media
Andy and I followed through with our plans to golf on the 25th, in the rain even!
Tumblr media
Gae had a straightforward trip to Denver, where she lucked out in her timing to see her brother Zane, visiting from Minnesota!
Tumblr media
She got to see Kipp the first night as well, and for the first time maybe ever, Gae played the straight photo role:-)
Tumblr media
Gae spent a week at her best friend's home, soaking up all the Jil love she could.
Tumblr media
Gae got a few pictures of our nephew, Noel, who is enjoying a road trip through Utah... lucky dog!
Tumblr media
I joined my college buddies, Mike, Andy and Dave for Octoberfest in Leavenworth on October 6th... PARTAY!
Tumblr media
Ben sends some great pictures of he and Rob on occasion, which we love seeing:-)
