MR. BUNGLE MELVINS ☆ SPOTLIGHTS ★ The Showbox, Seattle
Photo Review by Chris Schanz
One might ask what would bring me out of retirement? Was I retired? What the hell have I been doing for the past three years? All things Doomed and Stoned have been in flux for me. I’ve been focusing on my day job. I’ve been focusing on my family. I’ve been focusing on my garden. All this focusing has left me nearsighted. Blurry. The COVID era left me with a shitty hangover (not long COVID – I’m just trying to forget that shit and move on!). Sure – I’ve shot shows, band portraits, weddings, funerals yadda yadda fucking yadda. I wanted a sign that the universe is ready for my gifts, once again.
Enter Mr. Bungle and The Melvins. The Geek Show Tour, sponsored by Ipecac Records celebrates both the vast accomplishments of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomas, Mr. Bungle) and The Melvins – on their 40th anniversary! The perfect lure to get me off my ass and feel like I actually can contribute something to music, art and photography in general without licking the taint of Instagram and an AI-generated algorithmic overlord soon set to devour us, Titans, Gods and all.
The Showbox at the Market is the perfect set. I feel at home there, usually right by the soundboard. So many shows seen there – Sonic Youth, Nudedragons (Soundgarden), Brothers Of the Sonic Cloth, Sleep, Uncle Acid, Bell Witch, Graveyard, Chelsea Wolfe, The Black Angels – on and on, and on and on. It’s by far Seattle’s best concert hall, IMHO.
SPOTLIGHTS
I admit. I wasn’t prepared for Spotlights. A buddy of mine in Denver by way of San Francisco said they’re sweetly DOOMY. I was in. I got three songs to fall in love. Head over heels! Words escape my brain, only memories of sweet, subsonic joy flowing through my chest and brain. I followed up with Sarah Quintenero after the show at the merch booth, loading up on their vinyl. I’m blasting “Tidals” on vinyl while writing this in my cave, but “Alchemy for the Dead” is a MASTERPIECE! I’ve been binging on their Bandcamp all week now. Bold, deep bass fuzz, ethereal vocals and serrated guitar riffs. My new summer soundtrack.
They’re still on tour – and I highly advise you to see them now!
Alchemy For The Dead by Spotlights
Spotlights Setlist
"The Alchemist" (2023’s Alchemy For The Dead)
"Sunset Burial" (2023’s Alchemy For The Dead)
"Algorithmic" (2023’s Alchemy For The Dead)
"False Gods" (2023’s Alchemy For The Dead)
"Part 4" (2020’s We Are All Atomic)
MELVINS
This brings me back to the Melvins. The force that shaped my twenties in Seattle. My band Fuzzbud had a six-degrees-of-Kevin Bacon thing with a Morton, WA / Monteseno, WA, somebody’s cousin played in a band that opened for…whatevs. We tuned to DUH flat and had a good time. BUT…The Melvins were always a mainstay in any of my playlists.
King Buzzo did NOT disappoint! I was singing along from the photo pit. I was kidding beforehand that there should be some sort of SNL skit – a play by play commentary of the photo pit action. Think Howard Cosell announcing each of the photogs falling over each other for the shots. I thought it was funny, anyways. I’m a dork.
ANYWHOO. Buzzo provides! Dale’s a GOD. I got my HEALTHY fix of Houdini, culminating in a THREE BASS OVERLOAD on Night Goat with Sara Qintenero from Spotlights and Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle joining Steve McDonald to rumble your bunghole. What did I miss by NOT seeing the tour finale in San Francisco? A reunion of Fantomas (Mike, Buzz and Dave Lombardo)! When these guys get together, (black) magic always happens!
The Bride Screamed Murder by Melvins
Melvins Setlist
"I Can’t Shake It" (1998 split with Cosmic Psychos, Some Girls/I Can’t Shake It)
"Zodiac" (1990’s Bullhead)
"Copache" (1993’s Houdini)
"I Want to Hold Your Hand" (2018’s Pinkus Abortion Technician - Beatles Cover)
"Hammering" (2022’s Bad Mood Rising)
"Never Say You’re Sorry" (2022’s Bad Mood Rising)
"Evil New War God" (2010’s The Bride Screamed Murder)
"Let It All Be" (1999’s The Bootlicker)
"Honey Bucket" (1993’s Houdini)
"Revolve" (1994’s Stoner Witch)
"Night Goat" (1993’s Houdini - with Steve McDonald, Spotlights Sarah Quintero and Mr. Bungle bass Trevor Dunn on basses)
MR. BUNGLE
The main event. I knew they led with the Mr. Rogers theme on most nights. ADORABLE! But to my surprise, and delight! They performed the John Sebastian theme to “Welcome Back Kotter”! FUCK YES. I’m a Sweathog and everyone knows it! We would also be treated to the Pepto Bismol jingle not too far into the set.
I was wanting, wishing for a few more songs from 1991’s Mr. Bungle release, primarily some “Squeeze Me Macaroni” and “Stubb-A-Dub” action. Stubb was my go-to track in our house in college. After many a trip, I believed I was the proverbial “family dog” to our tribe…just elated to be along for the ride scrambling from party to party. Luckily for me, I got some “My Ass Is On Fire” and I was satiated. “Speak Spanish Or Die” brought me right back to my thrash and skating days (Days. Rolled my ankle on the half-pipe and drove the crew to all the spots after that). Van Halen’s Loss of Control? A TOTAL surprise and I was elated! Ear to ear grins and giggles!
I came for the Melvins, Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo, but I left with a deep adoration for Spotlights and a 365-day calendar of “The Many O-Faces of Scott Ian” and that’s more than OK. I’m in love. Thank you, Scott, for fulfilling this schoolboy’s adolescent dreams, 30 years later!
The Night They Came Home by Mr. Bungle
Mr. Bungle Setlist
"Welcome Back" (John Sebastian cover)
"Bungle Grind"
"Eracist"
"Spreading the Thighs of Death"
"Loss for Words" (Corrosion of Conformity cover)
"Hypocrites"
"Speak English or Die" (Stormtroopers of Death cover) (changed to "Speak Spanish or Die")
"Glutton for Punishment"
"Anarchy Up Your Anus"
"Methematics"
"Hell Awaits" (Slayer cover) (intro)
"True/Cold War/True"
"Raping Your Mind"
"World Up My Ass" (Circle Jerks cover) (with Michael Crain)
"Sudden Death"
Encore: "Loss of Control" (Van Halen cover)
Encore: "My Ass Is on Fire" (with PEP tag)

don’t the sun look good goin’ down over the sea?
new york
Mid-May. Throngs. I had never seen so many people in Washington Square Park on an uneventful day. Every corner teemed with masked mouths and eager eyes. Everything electric and new.
But storefronts were shuttered on Myrtle Ave. My favorite jukebox out of order. No pinball at Milo’s Yard, just an overcrowded patio and room for me at a booth.
I was on the East Coast for my sister’s wedding. Will and I took the train from Massachusetts and stayed at a garden-level Airbnb in Bushwick for a week. When I got back to Denver, I had the sense that I was descending on a sleepy little cowtown, nowhere to go and nothing to see.
Weeks later, a colleague who was visiting New York emailed me: “Can't believe you left that magical city.” Neither could I.
la
Driving up the Pacific Coast Highway in the backseat of my best friend’s boyfriend’s car, all I could think was: Tinder. Not the dating app, but the grass. It was late July, and the drop of a single match, it seemed, would set the Santa Monica Mountains ablaze.
For a while I convinced myself that moving to LA would solve my every problem. It’s all so glamorous, the sun and surf and celebrities. But something struck me as grotesque about the billionaires tending lush gardens in the Hollywood hills while a megadrought threatens to render the region unlivable.
I do love LA, and I have a great time whenever I’m in town, but my intense desire to move there left me when I started picturing the Valley flooded and the hills in flames. Nowhere is really safe, but a mile above sea level, we can at least pretend.
denver
The light is different in the west. I have the corniest analogy: Imagine strolling through the hall of presidential paintings at the National Portrait Gallery. You’ll walk past centuries of pale old faces gazing forth from musty canvases. At the end of the hall, you’ll find Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of President Obama shrouded in flowers and vines, the green oil incandescent on the canvas. That’s how the light is in the mountains, crystalline and dazzling, so unlike the muted tones in the East Coast woods where I grew up. I can’t capture it on an iPhone or even really describe it. But it’s real, a trick of the atmosphere, a video filmed in high contrast.
I’ve been here just about 13 months, and I don’t know how long I’m going to stay. Last month, we moved to a new apartment on the other side of town. It’s as big as the house I grew up in, with in-unit washer and dryer, and within walking distance of a bunch of shops and restaurants. Most importantly, it allows pets. Will and I adopted a four-month-old kitten and named him Shinji, like Neon Genesis Evangelion, but mostly because we were spitballing names and that’s the one that stuck. I’d had guinea pigs and birds before, but never an actual mammal pet. I don’t know what to do with all the love I feel for this little black cat. He comes to me in the morning with his jingly toy in his mouth, asking to play fetch. As I write this, he is slung across my feet in bed, warming them while he sleeps.
I have a clearer view of the mountains from my new apartment, and every night, the sun sinks down behind them, shrouding them in shadow and painting the western sky with wild streaks of color. Night sets in quickly, cool and dry. I open the windows wide and sleep well.

TW suicide
And I see everyone gettin' all the things I want. And I'm happy for them, but then again, I'm not. Just cool vintage clothes and vacation photos. I can't stand it. Oh God, I sound crazy. —Olivia Rodrigo, “Jealousy, Jealousy.”
I resent you presenting your life like a fucking propaganda brochure. —Fiona Apple, "Relay"
All these social networks and computers got these pussies walkin' 'round like they ain't losers. —Jack Harlow, "Industry Baby"
There’s this woman I follow on Instagram. I don’t know her, but some of my friends do. She’s tatted, artistic, and undeniably cool. For a moment this summer, I almost considered taking an underpaid reporting job in the small city where she lives. I imagined running into her in a coffee shop, and what I could say to introduce myself without coming off as weird. I actually saw her in New York once, believe it or not. I didn’t say anything then. And why would I behave differently a second time?
Anyway. She posted on her story one day recently that it had been a year since her suicide attempt. You never would have known. Her life had seemed not perfect, but worth aspiring to, for sure—full of joy and friends and travel. She, of course, did nothing wrong, sharing what she chose to share. I was wrong to envy her. I’m wrong to envy everyone. That doesn’t stop me.
I can’t believe I fell for it, that Instagram trap. I always thought I was too smart for it. (“My heart was not. I took it like a kid, you see.”) I never cared about the likes. I posted shitty memes I made in Photoshop. I forgot to open the app.
But then, I guess, it was hot vax summer, and my friends in New York were having parties, and telling me about the parties, and staying out all night, and posting photos of the clubs and the bars and the Empire State Building, and New York Magazine was going on about the fear of missing out. Even the friends I’d made in Denver, they didn’t seem to have jobs. They were always in Telluride or Moab or Yellowstone or on the top of some 14er, giddy on thin air. This was before the Wall Street Journal’s report that Facebook knew its services harmed teenage girls. It was before Gabby Petito. It was late summer, and I was convinced that everyone had more friends, more money, and more fulfilling lives than me. I had to delete the app for a while.
I think part of what I went through this summer was the realization that even when COVID becomes analogous to the flu, things will never go back to the way they were. Some of my friends have left New York, and others have moved there. I have tasted a life of mountains and sprawl, and it has changed me. The climate is changing. Things will be worse during my lifetime than they were during my parents’. The only way to stay sane is to be grateful for the things I have—a source of income; a boyfriend who loves me, for whatever reason, unconditionally; a kitten who loves me because I feed him and scoop his shit out of a box—and to look to the future with wariness and hope. Santa Fe. Mexico City. Yellowstone. I have so much more to see. Maybe I’ll even post about it.

Neil’s Photos
So I saw a post about pictures in the Fox Lounge and it got me thinking because Andrew canonically gets Neil a camera when he notices that Neil really likes taking pictures, right? I like to think that Neil absolutely covers the walls of his apartment in pictures because it reminds him that he has family now. So I present to you, pictures that can be found around the Josten-Minyard apartment:
There are so many pictures of the cats
Just the cats sunbathing in the window, playing with their toys, eating
One picture that Andrew really loves of Sir and King in the bath. Sir looks absolutely content and relaxed, but King is NOT having it
Neil managed to catch one of King jumping off the counter and at Nicky when he was visiting
Nicky is in the process of running away and King looks vicious
There’s (obviously) a ton of exy-related pictures, even though it’s hard for Neil to have his camera during practice and after games
One of Matt smiling at Neil behind the camera and pointing to the scoreboard of a game they won
One of Allison carrying an exhausted Renee bridal style off the court. They’re both smiling ever so softly at each other
One of Nicky and Aaron clacking sticks in lieu of high-fiving
There are at least five pictures of Andrew staring menacingly at the camera (Neil) from the goal
There’s one where Kevin is perched atop Matt’s shoulders during practice looking absolutely goofy, something he doesn’t often look during exy practices
One of Allison and Nicky hip-bumping after SLAYING their homophobic opponents
(Neil got that one from the sidelines after getting benched for punching said homophobic opponents)
One of Kevin and Wymack tearfully embracing after Kevin won his last game at PSU
One of all of them (the original nine) at the girls last game
Allison is holding Renee’s hand and holding seths jersey in the other, Kevin is sandwiched in between the twins, Nicky and Neil have their arms around each other, and Dan and Matt are laying on their sides in front of the group
There’s one of Kevin fist-bumping Neil at one of their late night practices, and they both look so happy (Andrew took it from the bleachers but if anyone asks he denies and says it must have been the phantom of the exy stadium)
There are also a bunch of miscellaneous photos from their time at PSU
Kevin passed out in the booth at Eden’s
Andrew eating the last of Neil’s ice cream at Sweetie’s and flipping off the camera
Kevin and Andrew studying together
Aaron and Katelyn holding hands on the sidewalk
Nicky and Allison gossiping while baking cookies
Matt giving Dan a kiss on the cheek on the dorm couch
There’s one picture of everyone laying on the ground sleeping after one of their impromptu movie nights and sleep overs
The girls painting each other’s nails
Renee and Andrew sparring-Neil likes this specific one because Renee looks particularly badass (he warms up to Renee and watches them pretty regularly to try and pick up some moves)
Kevin flipping Aaron the bird while simultaneously laughing at something he said
Everyone smiling at the camera from the dinner table at Abby’s house for Thanksgiving
One of Andrew on the roof, illuminated only by the moon and his cigarette lighter, with his hair rumpled and he’s looking less apathetic than usual
One of Betsy and Andrew drinking iced coffee together at the campus coffee shop
Even after they all graduate Neil is as vigilant as ever
Matt and Dan exchanging vows at their wedding
Nicky holding up his hand and showing off his engagement ring while he and Erik share a kiss in the background
Aaron smiling with Katelyn after he graduates med school
Aaron and Andrew each holding a twin with Katelyn dead asleep in the hospital bed right after the twins were born
Kevin, his wife, Wymack, and Abby on the day of Kevin’s wedding-he had called them Mom and Dad in his speech and everyone looks suspiciously misty-eyed
Dan and Matt surrounded by their kids in their kitchen while they cook dinner for Andrew and Neil who are visiting
Nicky, on the ground of the animal shelter, surrounded by dogs as he tries to choose which one to adopt-Erik is looking adoringly at him from off to the side
Abby and Wymack on their couch, yelling at the TV while watching one of Kevin’s games
Allison and Renee sitting on a blanket in the park with their kids during a picnic with Andrew and Neil. They’re all wearing matching sun hats and they all look ethereal
There are a couple of pictures of friends Neil meets after he and Andrew settle down in Denver, sitting together at restaurants and bars
A BUNCH of Andrew sleeping around the apartment
On the couch, on the floor, sitting up in a chair, sprawled out on the balcony, in bed
There are also many pictures of Andrew and Neil together during their travels, but Neil’s favorite is them under the Eiffel Tower because Andrew turned his head at the last second to give Neil a kiss on the cheek
There’s only one picture of just Neil, and Andrew took it. Neil is holding a cigarette and leaving over the rail of their balcony, and he looks beautiful against the city skyline. Andrew unabashedly frames it and puts it on his bedside table because, “I like having pictures of people who mean the most to me, too, junkie.”
Well I know that was just me rambling and this list is littered with my own personal headcanons with absolutely no background or context given, but I love this concept and had to write it. I hope you enjoyed!

Deanna + Nick | Grant Humphreys Mansion Wedding Photos
“We are individuals, but we accomplish more together” – Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher
I feel like this speaks so well to the spirit of Nick and Deanna’s relationship. It was said WAY better by Deanna during her vows where she said that she would choose Nick as her teammate for the rest of their lives. This derives from their clear love of sports (and the rivalries they create) but more so it speaks true to the state of their hearts, commitments, and actions towards that commitment. Together they are building a life. They are committed to working hard at it every day and know that it is not always sunshine and rainbows. But when you have a love like Deanna and Nick, you know they will succeed at whatever they put their mind to.
Their wedding was a wonderful reflection of their relationship. It had all the aspects above in subtle details and undertones throughout the day. But it also really showed off their pure joy for life and each other in that. I guess, what I am trying to say, is it was so fun! Everyone was constantly laughing and playing games. The dance party was epic, the photo booth was always packed and there were so many fun touches that you could smile at every turn. I mean who else has giant heads of themselves to play around with?! You can tell they have a great sense of humor and joy for life.
It was a fantastic day and reminded me what it looks like to love with pure joy and determination! Congratulations Nick and Deanna!
–Katie
