Radio Free Monday
Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!
Ways to Give:
Edminister Engler is a recent widower who has now been diagnosed with cancer; he doesn't have health coverage and is too sick to work, so is raising funds to help find an oncologist and seek treatment. You can read more and support the fundraiser here.
secondalto was in a car accident in February that totaled her car, and she missed work through the end of the school year; insurance was slow to pay out and she didn't get another car (necessary for her job) until last month. Due to the staggered nature of her work, she is facing car and insurance payments, plus gas and other bills, that she won't be able to pay before they are due. She is raising funds for bills and is also offering fic beta services and handicrafts in return for donations; you can read more, reblog, and find giving information here.
songspinner9 linked to a fundraiser for Wren, a young, chronically ill person trying to stay active in their community and studying for a Library Science degree. Insurance will not cover the new wheelchair they need to achieve their goals, so they are fundraising for the wheelchair and power assist; you can read more and support the fundraiser here.
Anon linked to a fundraiser for meowdistract/hauntedrph, a friend with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which leaves her with limited mobility and weakness. She's offering commissions and raising funds via donation to help pay off debt and treat herself a little for her 30th birthday tomorrow. You can read more, reblog, and find giving/commission information here and there are also links to wishlists and donation options here.
maryellencarter is homeless and has recently moved cross-country to be closer to friends, and has finally been placed in a shelter; they are fundraising to keep their car insurance so they can travel to aid appointments and try to find a more permanent housing solution. You can read more, reblog, and find giving information here.
Beth linked to First Draft Detroit, a Detroit metro region nonprofit intended to replace NaNoWriMo; they're holding their first fundraiser on October 5th. If you are local to Detroit you can buy a ticket to play one of several TTRPGs, plus a silent auction and a bake sale; if you are not local you can still donate to support the org. You can read more, buy a ticket, and support the fundraiser here.
Recurring Needs:
loversdoom has recently been diagnosed with PCOS and needs help to afford the prescribed birth control pills on top of living expenses and dental bills; you can read more, reblog, and find giving information here or give via paypal here.
onedollopofsourcream is fundraising to help support a large family including young children during a difficult time; they particularly need funds for needed medication (including insulin), and hopefully eventually to get out of an abusive living situation. You can read more, reblog, and find giving information here.
chingaderita is raising funds to help their family get back on their feet after a house fire that left them in an unsafe living situation with black mold; their partner has also recently had oral surgery and many family members are unemployed, and they need funds for clean water, food, and cleaning until the mold can be taken care of. You can read more, reblog, and find giving information here.
memprime linked to a fundraiser for a friend, virtualalternative, who needs help with cat vet bills after their cat had several blockages; you can read more, reblog, and find giving information here.
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can post items for my attention at the Radio Free Monday submissions form. If you're new to fundraising, you may want to check out my guide to fundraising here.

Day two: Contemporary
Ao3
Kurt wasn’t supposed to be baking today. Sure, it was Black Friday and he could’ve been up at 3 am and gone with Rachel and her new boyfriend to line up outside of some store. But frankly the deals being dished out aren’t the same as his childhood. Where is his 75% off televisions, America? Long gone are the days of waking his dad up to go to the mall on Black Friday. The sales just aren’t worth it when you can get a much better price thrifting or learning to sew your own clothes, which is exactly what Kurt has been doing since he got his sewing machine. Ironically, one of his last Black Friday purchases when he turned 16.
Plus, cooking Thanksgiving dinner is exhausting. Rachel is little to no hope in the kitchen. Kurt even cooked tofurkey for her and a small real turkey for himself. All Rachel added to the meal was a store brought pie; “Kurt the little grocery up the block is so cute!”
So, he wasn’t supposed to be baking but the apartment was empty and he was putting off writing an article for his internship at Trend-Z, a fashion magazine trying to appeal to the younger generations. This week’s topic “Fashions of Old Yore in the Contemporary World” was supposed to be a transitional piece from everyday wear to holiday. But Kurt doesn’t believe simply using the word “yore” makes it holiday themed.
Anyway, he’s baking and avoiding. The oven is well heated and his first batch of Christmas shaped sugar cookies actually look like trees and reindeer; a huge improvement over last year’s dicks and blobs.
It’s nearing 3pm when Rachel and Charlie (the new boyfriend) emerge from her bedroom. They came back from shopping around noon and gone straight back to bed but not without stealing a fresh sugar cookie.
“Good you’re up!” Kurt says, “try this.”
He hands her a spoonful of batter.
“New recipe?” Charlie asks.
“Experiment more like it,” Rachel replies, “needs less flour and I think you should add honey.”
“We don’t have any honey.”
She shrugs unhelpfully.
“I can run to the store,” Charlie offers.
Kurt shakes his head but is grateful for the offer. He kinda hopes Charlie sticks around because he’s the nicest of his roommate’s boyfriends thus far.
“I’ll go, just do me a favor and take the cookies out of the oven when the timer goes off in seven minutes.”
Charlie salutes him.
That’s how Kurt ends up doing a little shopping on Black Friday. Hopefully the grocery stores aren’t full of crazies.
Speaking of crazies, Rachel texts him the minute he steps into the store.
Rach: can you please get me heat protective spray I just ran out
Rach: oh and dental floss!
Rach: and apples! I think the ones in the fridge are bad
Kurt tells her “sure thing” and puts his phone in his back pocket. It vibrates again while he grabs a basket. This time it’s her boyfriend.
Charlie: Rachel is also requesting semi-sweet chocolate chips for the experimental cookies. But didn’t want to bug you again
He rolls his eyes but replies back that chocolate chips were already on his mental list.
Lining his items up makes Kurt realize just how bizarre they are: semi-sweet chocolate chips, flour, heavy cream, honey, apple sauce, apples, dental floss, heat protective spray, orange juice, and lemons.
He barely looks at the cashier, slightly worried to see his reaction to such items but the cashier, name tag says Blaine, starts up a casual conversation with him. Having worked in retail himself, Kurt knows how rough the job can be especially after a holiday so he’s polite and keeps up the conversation.
It’s nice to talk to someone new. It’s easy and over a little too quickly. Plus, Blaine is unarguably adorable.
Kurt wishes he wasn’t worried about cookies burning in his oven or maybe he could’ve asked Blaine when his shift ended and if he liked coffee.

This is art for my New All Caste au. Basically, Jason wants to rebuild the all caste in order to keep the culture alive and also to have more people who can fight the untitled. Since Essence is busy sharing a body with Isabel, Jason decides he’ll do it on his own. He was the only human to be able to learn how to wield the all blades and the all blades are connected to his soul so he uses some random magic item to find people with souls like his. The two people he finds first are Tara and Grant. So now he has to redeem them according to all caste standards so murder is fine but other than that Jason’s got his work cut out for him.
In this au, they did all die at some point but stayed dead long enough for all of them to have ended up roughly the same age. Originally when Jason was 13, Tara was 15 and Grant was 20 but now they’re all roughly twenty. I keep saying ‘roughly’ because Jason was in a coma and unresponsive for a bit so if you ignored that year then he’d probably be more like nineteen.
Also, since I don’t think I’d be able to handle the whole cannon Tara and Slade situation with the gravity it requires and since I just prefer them to have a slightly messed up mentor mentor dynamic, Slade never groomed Tara. Or at least not that kind of grooming. He still probably wasn’t the best to her but nothing romantic or sexual ever happened. He treated her and saw her just like the rest of his kids so whilst she’d still have issues because of him, it won’t be those kind of issues.
Once Grant came back to life he decided not to reconnect with his family because whilst he did miss Joey, this was his chance to have a life completely separate from his parents and he wasn’t going to pass that up. Mostly he just hung out with his old pall Jade and did jobs with her until Jason showed up.
Jason met Tara first and when he gave her his sales pitch she was living with Slade, Tanya, Rose and Poppy. She’d just gotten into a fight with Slade and took up Jason’s offer because he promised health insurance, dental, free food, living in the Chamber of All where no one but Jason and S’ara could get to, and getting magic swords by the end of it which she could brag about to Rose sounded like a pretty good deal. However, after her many bad experiences she isn’t exactly the most trusting person so gave him a fake name - Rocky. (I know it’s silly but if she used Terra as an alias, Rocky isn’t completely out of the question.)
When he gave the pitch to Grant, Grant said he’d go if he got payed and after being Red Hood for a while Jason had gotten a lot of money he mostly just spent on reinvesting in Gotham but still had more than he knew what to do with. He figured rebuilding the all caste was a good enough goal to spend money on so agreed and Grant joined the team.
From there they take a while to get along with each other. They take even longer to figure out who everyone is. Grant never heard of Tara and Jason only heard bits and pieces from Dick when he’d visit but Dick never talked a lot about her because either she’d already betrayed them or was just a plain headache to deal with. Grant died before Jason became Robin so would only know him as the Red hood guy whose friends with Jade’s ex and Tara would have probably only heard about Jason through Rose. Granted she wasn’t paying that much attention. Whilst they all vaguely know the others are capes too, no one actually bothered to mention their identities so it takes Tara inviting them to a family dinner for them to all figure out who the others are.
Also random things:
Terra loves to wind Grant up because he reacts more than Jason. Jason and Grant are the first to start getting along and bond over their shared interests like swords, hating Dick Grayson and some niche metal band no one else has ever heard of. Whilst Jason teaches them to meditate, Tara likes to move rocks until someone else notices. One time she made the ground she was sitting on hover up to ten feet in the air until Grant noticed (if you ask him, he’ll say he realised she was gone because it was too peaceful).

You know almost nothing about him. That guy. The guy who buys a box of those abhorrent jelly drink pouches weekly.
Well, you know some things. You know that the store sets aside a box of those for him. (There are no other unsealed boxes available for sale.)
You also know his apartment. You didn't stalk him! He just happens to live in your building and you just happened to have seen him entering his room. Yeah.
You take the stairs to raise the chances of running into him but that's a different thing, right?
Anyway! You know he's probably lived here for years. Whenever any neighbor sees him, they always greet him by name and make small talk. (In comparison, when you greet anyone they always nod and move on).
He's probably important is what you think before trying to know more about him. If he's famous, he wouldn't mind being looked up. Right?
You aren't sure what his name is. You hear people call him Aizawa. But that's a pretty common last name. How are you going to spell it? Are you going to look up 'famous Aizawa'? Something about that makes you look a bit too desperate so you decide, I won't do it.
But a thing happens. On your way up to your apartment, you see a confused delivery person standing before the elevator. When you offer assistance they ask, “you wouldn't happen to know where this man lives, would you? The special instructions said not to call him. You would assume they would do me a favor and put the exact address on it.”
That's where you see it. His name. Aizawa Shouta. And you do know of him. So you chat with the delivery person and accompany them to Aizawa's apartment.
Is this a normal thing to do? Maybe not. Why'd you do that? Hard to say. It's not like you'd run into him, not like you hoped to run into him. No.
But you do! Aizawa, opens the door and you find out he has at least one friend, named Yamada. (The deliverer complains about the inaccurate address and special instruction. Aizawa then apologizes and explains that he has problematic friends).
He glances at you for a second. You see him wonder why you're here. So you nod at him and walk away before he can ask you.
And you look him up. You would like to say that 2 hours of surfing on the net helped you fill the Aizawa shaped hole in your mind. But, you would be lying.
Here's what you find:
• He has two jobs.
• He's a teacher.
• He's a local dentist! (You would've never guessed)
• He's scary as a teacher. (One of his students left a comment under his dental clinic's address: he made me promise to study harder while he had his tools in my mouth. Almost pissed my pants but my toothache is gone.)
You shouldn't do it but you do. You note down his opening hours and clear out your schedule to visit his clinic. I'm just going to go see it is what you tell yourself.
But.
“Got a toothache?”, he finds you standing outside his clinic (like a creep, some might add).
“Uh, no.”
“When did you last get your teeth looked at?”
You wince. You can't think of a good answer. (1. It was a long time ago. 2. You don't know what a proper answer is.)
He fishes out a hairband from his pant pocket and ties his hair, “first visit is free. Do yourself a favor and come in.”
So, you do. You go in.
From the outside, there's nothing extraordinary about the clinic. It has a normal logo with a huge tooth. It is painted white. It even has the clinical smell.
The inside is a little different. Upon entering the clinic, a waiting room is seen. The benches are yellow. Bright yellow. The walls have scenes from children's tales painted on them. There's a shelf with many dental health pamphlets.
A receptionist's desk sits at the end of the room; behind it, is the dental room.
“You, wait here.” He points to an empty seat and walks away.
“Before you sit down, please make an appointment at the desk,” a tired voice calls out to you . The receptionist, you assume. He's got bright purple hair and a tired look that matches Aizawa's.
“Tell me your name, age, and problem.” He types into a computer without looking up at you.
“I'm here for a checkup.”
He pauses when he hears that and sighs.
“Is that a problem?”
“No. More patients mean more money. So, no. I have no problem. If you're here to see him, I have no problem. You're his problem,” he grumbles.
“Uh, I'm sorry.” Maybe you did go too far. Looking up where he works and showing up there, you couldn't be worse.
He looks up at you for the first time.
“He's here as a doctor and you're a patient. He's going to fix your teeth. You're going to go home with better teeth. If you know it and remember it, there's nothing to be sorry about.” He speaks to you in a soft but firm tone. A warning.
“Yeah, okay.” You sit down on an empty bench dejectedly. If Aizawa hadn't asked you to come in, you wouldn't have come in. Maybe not today but who's to say I wouldn't have come tomorrow?
You sigh and tuck your hands under your armpits.
"Are ya scared? Don't be. I know the kids give 'im a reputation but he's soft", an older man sitting across you says. He wears a kind smile in his eyes.
"I... uh. I'm not a patient. I mean, I am one now. But I was just going to... I stalked him." The words come out of your mouth before you can stop them.
"I see. Why?", he shifts his leg to prevent them from going numb but the smile never leaves his eyes.
"Uh, I just wanted to know more about him."
"Hm. Did ya learn anything good?"
You think about the six facts you know about him and weigh in their worth. They are good but they don't ... you shake your head
"Maybe try to talk to the man. Reckon, you'll learn more that way."
"Mr. Sasaki, you're up next." The old man gets up and you bid him goodbye.
His words make you think about your actions. For the entirety of your wait time, you think about what to do as to make up for your actions.
"Ehem! If you want to daydream about him, do it at home," the receptionist stands in front of you with his hands crossed, "called your name thrice already".
You jolt out of your seat and bow apologetically at him before heading over to the the dental room.
Aizawa is seated on a swivel stool with doctor garb on. He beckons you over to the chair, "lay down."
You do as instructed. He moves his stool behind your headrest. He brings a dental mirror up to your mouth, "open".
This angle makes your skin flush. He's so close to you. He has his hands in my mouth! Well, not really. But it does feel that way.
"Hmm, you haven't seen a dentist since you turned sixteen." his sudden remark makes your face heat up. There's absolutely nothing you can say to refute that.
"Your upper teeth are okay but your lower teeth are all in each other's way. Are you a slow eater? You must have some problem eating. Your upper jaw and lower jaw don't sit well at all. Your upper molar-" he lists your seemingly unending list of dental problems for ten minutes straight. You feel a hot flash going through your body. I should've gone to a dentist yearly every year after birth. How will I ever move on from this?
He moves his stool over to your side and lifts your chair so you're sitting up, "we can fix it. I'll write you some x-rays first. I can recommend a few solutions after seeing them. Feel free to get a second or third opinion. We can start your procedure when you're comfortable or you can see someone else. Up to you. I think you need braces to help align your jaw and a filling. I'm hoping a filling will do. No one likes root canals and you won't either."
You nod your head. It's too much information at once but you nod anyway. He looks at you, hard, before walking over to his desk, "come sit here."
"Okay. Let me explain slowly. You have many tooth problems. Some x-rays will help understand how bad they are. So, I am writing you an x-ray. You can get it done here when you have time. After looking at the x-rays, I will tell you what the next step should be," he speaks every word slowly and holds your gaze through each word. He then writes a note and hands it to you.
You nod while reading it and remember what you decided to do before you dozed off on the bench, "I have something to say!"
He takes off his mask and leans back in his chair, "go on."
"I looked you up on the internet and found your clinic and came over without a thought on how creepy it is and-"
His chuckle stops you from completing your apology.
"It's fine. At least you didn't break a tooth intentionally or fake a toothache," he winces as he recalls those incidents.
"Ah, oh." You realize that Aizawa probably faced these stalker situations before. That makes you feel worse so you apologize again.
"It's okay. At least it made you get your teeth checked. Most people don't see a dentist until it's too late," he pulls open a drawer in his desk and takes out an apple jelly juice pack, "here, as a thanks for that day."
You catch it miserably when he throws it to earning another chuckle from him.
"If the clinic is to uncomfortable, you can come to my apartment. I can fix at least one other problem you may have."

Re: 2024 Dental Fundraiser (closed on 02/10/24)
Update below the break!
First and foremost... thank you all so very, very much for your generosity ;^; <3 Between ko.fi, commissions, and selling collectibles I managed to get pretty close to my overall funding goal!! There are simply not enough words in the world to describe how deeply grateful I am for your kindness and support.  It helped so much.  It stung to hand over so much money at once but it would have stung even more if more of it was borrowed.
So the big appointment was yesterday. I really don't remember much, lol, which is what was promised. Around 8 AM they gave me three pills, put a blanket on and told me to relax, let me know a few minutes later they were going to start the work, and then... it was 1 PM, five hours later.  There was still about another hour's worth of work after that for a different procedure, for which I was awake and aware. I guess the sedation meds were starting to wear off, but they were still pretty potent; as I write this I still feel a bit off and will probably spend the rest of the day coming down from them.
I have a follow-up appointment scheduled for tomorrow. It shouldn't cost me anything.  And even if it did, you really couldn't make me worry about it; I'm sore today, but only on account of the cuts on the corners of my mouth and my jaws having been open for upwards of six hours - this morning I had pancakes for breakfast and they went down painlessly!!  It feels like forever since I've been able to eat anything (let alone something sweet) without having to worry about pain!!!  I'm so glad...
I suppose my only hope is that I don't get ambushed by surprise bad news at the follow-up.  If there's anything to tell me, they probably wouldn't have told me yesterday while I was still in a drug-induced stupor, right?  I am admittedly still a little worried I will be told I need additional work, but at least from a financial perspective, I will know what to do.  (It won't be another fundraiser-- that's not fair to you and we all--including myself--only have so much to offer)
Speaking of the fundraiser, a small update there:
My shops (Etsy/Mercari/eBay) are temporarily closed, but will re-open sometime next week. I will not be retracting anything that wasn't sold before the end of the fundraiser, any funds received goin forward will go towards rebuilding my emergency health fund
My ko.fi is generally used as a tip jar year-round and so will remain open - any donations received going forward will also go towards rebuilding my emergency health fund (the goal has been updated to reflect this)
Commissions received before the end of the fundraiser will be posted as they are completed. Even if I get a little slow I will always try to communicate progress (no matter how minimal) and the delay, if I get quiet please feel free to reach out to me!!
??? I didn't actually receive any print orders during the fundraising period so uhhh I'm thinking about how to approach this lol. I did say extras would be posted for sale after the fact, but I can't have extras if I don't have regular stock?
Anyway thanks so much again for your kindness <3 I really am so lucky to be supported by so many compassionate people.  I still have to be careful with what I eat but being able to do something as simple as drink water without having to microwave it first is such a weight off my mind.
Take care of yourself and be well!!

Thank you for responding back to me about being a dental hygienist. And for offering the chance to learn more. I was wondering if you had a good work life balance with your schedule and do you think you’re fairly compensated. I’ve been trying to figure out what to be and I’ve been looking into rdh or x-ray tech.
Also I hear that rdh causes a lot of neck pain, and you can’t do it for long. Do you feel like this field causes a lot of body harm? And do you think you can do this career without having to quit and find something else? (Sorry I know this is a lot, you don’t have to answer if anything makes you uncomfortable)
As an RDH you have good control of your schedule! A lot of positions are part-time as well. As a newer grad, I work three days a week & i’m thinking about going up to four.
I’m based in California where pay is on the high end, i’m paid $60/hr as a new grad! Washington pays about the same as CA. Personally, I do feel fairly compensated.
Call your dentist’s office and see if a hygienist is available for you to shadow! It really solidified my decision to become a hygienist. Also looks good on an application & is even a pre-req requirement for some schools!
Hygiene is definitely hard on your body because of small, repetitive motions. As long as you are practicing proper ergonomics (seating positions, indirect vision, etc.) and getting consistent exercise and movement, you can stay in hygiene for a full career.
Being a clinician isn’t the only path a hygienist can take! If you get a Bachelor’s degree you can work in managerial roles, education, research. You could become a sales rep for companies like Crest. There’s also a Masters degree available for DH.
You can 100% pursue this career without having to quit with or without stepping out of the clinic!
I love answering questions! Feel free to ask away!
