Behind Smiles: A Patient's Nightmare with MetLife Dental Insurance
Part 1: My Battle with MetLife Dental. The Toothache that Morphed into a Financial Migraine. My fateful journey through the MetLife Dental Insurance labyrinth began in February 2023 when an everyday occurrence turned into an exasperating ordeal. I needed a routine replacement crown on Tooth 18 and anticipated no issues, given my dental insurance with MetLife Dental. As I would soon discover,…

The California insurance thing is adding on to my established belief that insurance is inherently a bad mitigation for any risk that affects large swaths of the population who will very likely need it at some point.
The point of insurance is for the collective to pay an affordable regular fee, and the few who are affected by a given risk are compensated. Ideally, the EV of insurance would be 0, but in practice the EV is negative, but since we are broadly risk averse* we want it anyway.
But that only works if the fee is affordable and the risk is low. Fire insurance in California was a bad idea because everyone was at a major risk, the full cost of premiums would have been immense. California made it worse by making it illegal to charge for the real cost, but even if they hadn't, the premiums would have simply ballooned and many people would have been priced out of insuring their homes, and would still be in this situation.
Similar thing happens with healthcare. Everyone wants their insurance to cover everything, including very common, every day medications for long term medical problems. Needing my ADHD medication isn't a risk, it's not at the tail end of the probability distribution. My insurance shouldn't cover it, because covering it means that the company has to raise everyone's premiums, and raising the premiums prices people (myself included) out of being able to afford insurance for actual tail risks that could ruin their lives.
"But I need my ADHD medication to live a good life, it would ruin me to not get it" yeah, I hear you, same here, but insurance is just a bad system for dealing with that. It just isn't a risk, it doesn't fit well with the "small affordable fee to avoid unlikely disaster" model. If insurance pays for everyone's lifetime medications, then it has to raise premiums by the average of the cost of everyone's lifetime medications, and everyone breaks even, except now insurance is just more expensive and some people are priced out.
I think anytime insurance starts to sail out of the price range of the target demographic, it's a sign that something is deeply wrong and some intervention, likely government intervention, is needed. If people can't afford the fire insurance, it's because the fire risk is way too high and your forest management strategy should be overhauled. If people are struggling to pay their health care insurance, their insurance probably covers way too much because too much of every day health care is also out of reach of people.
Insurance companies aren't the good guys, you have an adversarial relationship with them. They will try to screw you over and lie to you and scam you and all the rest. But you can't get blood from stone, and you can't get a policy of "pay me money if my home built on top of kindling burns down" without paying for it somewhere, and instead of getting mad at the insurance company you should probably start asking why your home is built on kindling.
*Or, well, more complicatedly the full cost of some disasters is much worse than than strict accounting cost. Losing your home is far more destructive than losing the market price of the home's value, because it means spending weeks to months homeless and opening you up to other risks.

It's such a huge scam that medical and dental are separate insurances. Assuming my insurance doesn't pull a last minute 'fuck you', I'll be at deductible after my surgery, so my physical therapy should be covered, but if I need any fillings or gum grafts or other dental repairs from all the damage the braces and surgery have done? Nope those are on a different insurance and dental doesn't have a maximum out of pocket

Luca is in for a dental today. He needs to get at least one tooth pulled and the rest cleaned.
He is very overweight, I need to get him on a diet. It's so hard when my other two dogs are such fussy eaters and he is there ready to pick up anything they discard faster than I am. 😫

Pet insurance exists and is very helpful. Vets are some of the lowest paid doctors in the U.S. and clinics are struggling to afford equipment and pay a livable wage to the few employees they have. They're not trying to extort you; imagine if you went to the dentist without insurance and got a full cleaning plus teeth removal plus meds for less than $1000? It'd be a miracle. Vets don't want to charge so much, they and the rest of us in the industry are drowning :(
i wasn't talking about individuals. I was talking about companies, the whole building, the entire practice and industry. not the individual vets that work inside, i have no doubt that the individual veterinarians DO care an incredible amount and I'm sure that they do wish that they could be paid fair wages and do their job for free at the same time, because they went into it for the love of animals not the money. just because individual veterinarians aren't intentionally extorting sad or desperate people doesn't mean that the industry/business they work for isn't

Y'all. If you need basic medical care or dental care see if there is a rural health program in your driving range. Especially if they offer a sliding scale fee system.
I have been having dental issues, slowly getting things done over the last 6 months or so. Because my state changes some insurance stuff I didn't realize in time that my health +dental insurance had dropped the dental coverage. I had to go in today as uninsured and the initial estimate was $174. With a sliding scale fee I only paid $84 out of pocket. For reference with insurance the same procedure was $46. It was still more than I hoped to pay but saved me half of the estimate price.
Long story is I have a strong aversion to anything dental thanks to mental trauma from a parent. Not afraid of the dentist more the disappointed looks. I completely changed dental locations to not have to see people I basically grew up with and that has meant that I was able to have a couple abscessed teeth extracted and I am scheduled for a normal cleaning and some fillings.
I still need to find a specialist for a root canal and an implant and I will eventually get both the implant and partial dentures but at least my chronic pain from very badly broken down teeth is mostly going away.

GOOD NEWS EVERYBODY IM BACK I HAVE ANSWERS so we looked at my teeth etc and I’m not gonna die of sepsis bc despite all the shit my toothache caused me there’s no infection. so what was it, Bronwyn? good question!
wisdom teeth
#LMFAO#my wisdom teeth are……… so poorly angled. 100% impact on all four#and the left one is tryna make moves so it’s swelling my gums which is raising my molar#and jacking up my bite while the tooth is sensitive in sensitive gums#¯\_(ツ)_/¯#so he suggested just. get rid of them. take the wisdom teeth out. all 4 bc of the possible impact from them#and if I didn’t I’d just periodically have this crazy ass pain come and go and come and go and fuck THAT so. removal it is#👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻#I have no idea what that’s gonna cost lmfao so we’ll…. we’ll see#and today basically the pain hasn’t been nearly as severe. the swelling has gone down significantly. so I think the pain/problem is#subsiding for a bit. I hope. lol. so they’re referring me to the dental hospital teehee#and then we did a clean of my teeth bc I have crazy plaque buildup and thus bacteria and thus making the issue worse. apparently. so#which isn’t a surprise. depression and adhd means I don’t brush my teeth as often as I should. and floss is scary#while doing that he seemed to have no problems with any of my fillings so I assume they’re fine atm too#all those side effects bc my wisdom tooth wants to play up…….. attention seeker#also between that molar and the gums where the wisdom tooth is. there’s a pocket. apparently. and stuff is getting stuck in there apparently#a pocket……. head in hands. and obviously that’s difficult to clean so that’s also bothering my gums and thus my tooth. GOD#ooc#anyways that’s the dentist update. tldr; I’m fucking fine it’s just wisdom teeth fucking it all up
