this side of the fandom avoids all the creepy violent fantasy stuff around dennis’s character like the plague i guess either to woobify him or make up for all the “dennis is a serial killer” character reduction happening on the other side. but i think there’s an untapped goldmine in there with exploring his psyche and i think it could be a fun layer especially in the macden dynamic?
obviously i don’t think he’s capable of being that violent irl or would ever want to. but there’s a undeniable amount of depravity swimming around in his head. a combination of a trauma induced power trip, a curiosity about the fragility of bodies and minds, and a general self hatred that places himself as the monster of his own fantasy. he thinks about decapitation. he dreams about pulling the heart out of someone’s chest and eating it. when it’s busy at the bar and he needs to tune the world out he probably traps himself in his head thinking about stuff like how much pressure a human windpipe can withstand. or what a person would look like with their skin peeled off. what mac would look like. would his muscles and bone structure still hold up? would he still look that good? maybe even better.. without that stupid tattoo. just flesh and blood and bone, naked and as pure as he could be, a purity he’s been chasing his whole life. would mac let him do it? they’re passing thoughts but sometimes he whispers them in bed when he’s talking dirty and he gets that calm, lifeless look in his eyes. it’s terrifying and unsettling but the sex is tender and gentle. sometimes in the aftermath mac gets worried and asks if he means all that stuff he says about wanting to slice into him and watch him bleed out while they’re making love. dennis gets so offended that mac would even ask. he doesn’t talk to him the whole next day and sulks in the fact that no one understands him. mac ends up having to be the one to apologize.

Opinions on Charlie woobification? Also, do you think the fandom woobifies Dennis (too much)?
A few people have sent me asks about my thoughts on Dennis being woobified in the fandom and I’ve failed to answer them (sorry). Not for lack of interest on the subject, it’s just hard to answer. I think, though, answering this Charlie question in the same ask might make it easier to explain my thoughts on this.
When we talk about the fandom we’re generally talking about the people here, a couple hundred people on Twitter, maybe some Instagram stans(?) and tend to ignore the million (1,000,000)+ people on the subReddit and the huge chunk of people on Facebook and casual Twitter who are constantly, continually pushing a narrative that these characters have no depth, and thus their characterisation is what we see on the surface and nothing more. I think the one time it’s probably important not to ignore those people as fans of the show is when it comes to woobification.
Because at a surface level, the people who are consuming this show as a comedy and making posts that exhibit their takes/opinions on these characters to the majority of people portray the characters very simply: Charlie is an idiot and the best member of the Gang, in every sense of the word, and Dennis is a mere representation of toxic masculinity to a psychopathic degree. And those opinions are the loud majority.
So any discussion in our minority section of the fandom that woobifies Charlie or Dennis operates within and on top of the general narrative of the public perception (“face value”) of the characters. Woobification of Charlie, then, almost always further infantilises the majority of his traits to contribute to the idea that he’s not a bad guy and doesn’t deserve the position he’s in in life, while woobification of Dennis mostly works to counteract the idea that he’s a cold-blooded psychopath.
In a way, I think you have to woobify Dennis to a degree in order to properly understand his character (and Glenn makes that clear). Do some people take it too far? When it gets into the realm of genuinely somehow believing he’s not a bad person, absolutely, but in over a decade of Sunnyblr posts, I think I’ve seen that conclusion once, maybe twice. I really don’t think any post that’s diving into how Dennis' actions reflect his insecurities and trauma is ever speaking ignorant of the rest of his character, and that normally seems clear to the majority of people because rarely, if ever, does a dive into Dennis woobification cause fans to understand the character worse than they understood him at face value.
Whereas, with Charlie, you constantly do see this. Posts and threads and fights between fans arguing up and down that Charlie is better than the rest of them: he’s the smartest, actually, he means to do good, he shouldn’t be lumped in with the rest of them as sexual predators... People in this fandom genuinely argue that you are a *better person* if you’re a Charlie stan, that Charlie ships are softer, more moral, than toxic Dennis ships. The result of Charlie woobification seems to often make people less media literate about the character (and the show as a whole if we’re being real) than they would be if they just watched at face value.
Tumblr media
They’re all morally despicable characters.
TL;DR: Due to the face value perceptions of the characters, woobification is an almost necessary tool for better exploring and understanding Dennis under his surface, while it really only exacerbates an annoying surface-level understanding of Charlie

Putting this as an aside to my last post, but I think this also explains why, out of everyone he interacts with, Yuuri's conversation with Dennis is much different than it is with everyone else.
Everyone else starts the conversation with antagonism, and Yuuri replies gleefully - because yes! This is how the game starts! You are mad at me or scared of me, and I provoke you back until you're so mad you have to fight me, and then I fight you and I show how much stronger I am than you and I win! :)
Dennis, though, is the only character to immediately be happy to see him. To meet him with genuine care and compassion and a desire to see him as a friend. Yuuri doesn't tease Dennis the way he did the others, because I think it throws him off guard. Like hang on. That's not how the game goes. You're doing it wrong and I don't know what to do with this.
It also seems like probably in the past, Dennis had never talked back to Yuuri either. "Are you sure you want to take that tone with me?" A warning that implies to me that up until now, Dennis has always been accommodating. Things are going off script. Yuuri is warning him to get back on track. And this time, Dennis ignores him.
Because it seems like out of the entire cast, Dennis was the only one to get just close enough to Yuuri to realize that there might actually be a person underneath that dirty laundry pile of neglect, abuse, conditioning, and poor coping mechanisms, enough to even now think that whatever relationship they had in the past was enough to call him a friend.
And to mention Dennis too, from both the show and what we got from his event in Duel Links, Dennis thinks that he himself is the worst person ever who didn't deserve to be forgiven at all. But then everyone did. Every single person he hurt forgave him nearly unconditionally. So in Dennis's logic, if even he can be forgiven.... surely Yuuri's not beyond saving either, right?
And Yuuri....doesn't know what to do with this. So he gets touchy. He gets more irritable with Dennis than he does with anyone else. He loses his lighthearted "oh i'm such a stinker hehe" energy because Dennis throws him off balance. this isn't right this isn't how people are supposed to talk to him what do you mean actual human connection that's not real, this is a game, it's just a game, it's always been a game, what are you doing
I think deep down Dennis coming to Yuuri with genuine compassion scares Yuuri. Because no one's ever reached out to him like that before. That's not how he's supposed to be treated. But if he can be treated kindly...if people can care about him...
then does he even know who he is anymore?
