I'm Chef-ing at Queens Museum TONIGHT!! --Cross-Cultural Culinary Art Event-- FREE w/ RSVP-- Thursday 7-24-14

Very excited to share that tonight, Thursday, July 24th I will be participating as Chef/Artist cooking up some love in 'This Ain't Havana: Paladar in Queens', at Queens Museum, a cross-cultural culinary, art and architectural collaboration by artist Craig Shillitto and the Museum’s Cuban architects-in-residence. It will use the widespread embrace of Queens’ diverse food traditions to consider the cultural impact of immigration. I will be one of six Latin American chefs to prepare small dishes as a symbolic journey throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America. Guests will gather at a ‘migrating’ table that during the course of the installation will be simultaneously added to and deconstructed, it's materials being used to fuel the BBQ that is providing the evening's fare! 

The dishes that I've chosen to prepare for the evening use locally available ingredients to reinvent traditional recipes passed down to me by my Grandmother, a first generation Cuban immigrant.  The dishes also re-appropriate plant based ingredients into the focus as a nod to Cuba's progressive urban permaculture movement and as a means to think about an evolving shift in our cultural narrative around food, meat, health, and accessibility."

I'm also sneaking away from the grill to make some delicious cocktails featuring two of my favorite craft spirits donated by Denizen Rum & Union Mezcal.

We're ecstatic to have guest bartending with us, award winning mixologist Marshall Altier!

Marshall Altier is a writer, bartender, and enthusiast at-large of all things epicurean. His contributions have been featured in print in such publications as New York magazine, The New York Post’s Page Six magazine, and The San Francisco Chronicle, and Gary Regan’s The Bartender’s Gin Compendium.    He is part of a small group of mixologists known for helping to break down the walls between the kitchen, bar, and market, having worked with such luminaries of the culinary world as Marco Canora, Zak Pelaccio, Sam Mason, and Eben Freeman. Marshall has designed drink menus and food pairings in world-class venues such as The James Beard House in New York, Park Hyatt Hotel in Tokyo, and a long list of hotels and restaurants in the United States, Bangkok, Singapore, and Hong Kong.     He has designed flavors for such iconic clients as The Mandarin Oriental and W Hotels. Marshall has been a finalist in a number of global competitions and was awarded first prize in the 2009 Modern Sprirts’ Bar-made Bitters Challenge.
