Edge of the World
WHAT WHAT WHAT
King is a Baby Titan??!?! Confirmed??!!? Since Season 1A I’ve speculated about a connection, King as THE Titan or its child… We were right! It wasn’t for anything!
Oh my god… All those people we saw, they’re just regular witches! Dressed like that which they plan to kill… DRESSED AS TITAN BABIES TO LURE THEM IN! And DAMN what kind of monsters are, or WERE these clans, to have KILLED actual Titans?! And why does our Titan look so humanoid, are they just deformed? Does it have to do with having magic, are they the only one without magic?
Likewise, we see that the Titan Trappers are witches, the ‘human’ variety… So I guess witches (human) precede our Titan in terms of evolution??? So where did they come from, did Titans actually EAT things? Or did the Collector, or ‘Grand Huntsman’, if he goes by different titles… Does he hunt and kill and ‘collect’ creatures just for fun??? And he’s tricked people, time and time again, into hunting and killing Titans for his own amusement, or for power??!
Bill said that if King was sacrificed, it’d release the Collector… So he’s probably in the in-between realm, since Bill ALSO had a disk like Belos! But how… Did the last Titan do this to him? Is he trapped IN the Titan and these disks are just conduits for his powers? Did demons evolve from Titans, and witches are their own ancestral lineage? What happened to the other lands, or were they there?
Bill was reading a book by Flora (whose surname spelling has apparently been corrected), is he fact-checking? Did the Collector abandon the Titan-Trappers because he thought them useless? Bill says he’s OLDER than Belos’ reign, how old??? Can the Collector bestow immortality, is the Collector using Belos to free him? Does Belos know? Does he care; If the Collector wants to kill everything, then it’s possible they legit have a mutual alliance!
Did the Collector give magic to the BI Titan and that’s why it had it, if it was the only one? And why it looks more humanoid, does the magic of bile sacs cause demons to change into this more humanoid look? And King…
KING MY BABEY! That dream was so funny but also so painful… He just wanted to have a family, he KNOWS Luz is leaving and he can’t do anything to stop her, which is some nice continuity on his arc from Really Small Problems; So all he can do is prepare for when she leaves! I love how the show gives credit to his actual emotions, King is more than just the funny animal sidekick and more than just the plot device, his feelings and who he is as a person MATTERS first and foremost!
And Eda… GOD, Eda seemed so weirdly calm and straightforward when Luz told her, and I can see why! She was trying so HARD to keep herself together for these kids, and I adore how she acknowledges that they’re KIDS and shouldn’t have to handle this stuff! That’s wrong! And how Lilith comforts her, finally, Lilith comforting Eda as an older sister she can count on, after so LONG…!
I’m surprised King wasn’t mad at Hooty, but maybe he didn’t realize just HOW long ago this letter was; Like he thought it was something Hooty just ate this morning or something. Plus with all of what we have… Oof. It’s a lot to balance. The Collector’s rhyme was also different in Luz’s memory… But YEAH, I love how Luz quickly puts it together that the Collector is the Grand Huntsman! After being duped by Philip/Belos, she’s already gotten more wary and showing a closer eye and awareness to this! And also damn… A lot of past characters really did mess around with a baby Titan and didn’t even know it, huh??? That’s so funny.
Oh… OH GOD, KING MUST REALIZE OUR TITAN IS HIS DAD. But what about the one who killed the BI Titan? Was he manipulated by the Collector, only to reveal the truth? It’s mentioned only the power of a Titan can hatch the egg, and we see moonlight and I guess some form of glyphs involved… So all Titans have magic? Did the Titan Trapper (the one who killed our Titan) have a conscience? Is he like Wittebro? A parallel yet foil to Belos, as someone who was duped by the Collector, but realized it was wrong? Or mostly Wittebro… Yeah.
GOD that reveal that they weren’t actually the same species but just wearing disguises. That’s so creepy and uncanny. I kinda love it but WOW… And Salty! SALTY MY BELOVED! He returns as I hoped and as a pal to Luz and King (and Hooty), even making them breakfast! I love him, Dana said she was so stoked to meet Steve Blum when casting Salty, I can see her bias for him now! Did they tell Salty? Also, like the acknowledgement of how he no longer works for Hunter… Esp since Hunter’s been fired. I’m surprised Luz didn’t mention him, but I can chalk that up to the show having to wrap things up ASAP, Labyrinth Runners might discuss this though.
Kikimora seems in charge now…. AND GOD WE WERE RIGHT; Belos knows that Luz did the time loop now. He no longer has to let her live for that; HE CAN KILL HER. And Lilith too…! THAT CLIFFHANGER AUGH, what a callback to Agony of a Witch! But now Lily is defending… Will she learn Raven mode to fight back? Will our sisters be kidnapped… Hooty isn’t THERE yet! And the Titan Trapper who killed the BI Titan, he has magic like Jean-Luc… So did he also learn from the Collector, as Philip did?
What happened to him? Why didn’t he tell anyone? Did he die before he could? Jean-Luc took care of King, maybe it was just to keep him alive to sacrifice for the Collector… ALSO DAMN COLLECTOR, it seems like you didn’t tell Belos about your previous allies! If you did, he’d have probably identified King and released you ASAP… So is he planning to revive OUR Titan, just so he can kill it as a sacrifice for the Collector?! Damn… getting FMA parallels again, with the Collector going from place to place, tricking nations into repeating the same folly and ritual, for power!
We know the Titan Trappers have access to the isles, do they just not know Belos works for their Grand Huntsman? Did the Collector not bother to tell them, ‘bored’ of them like discarded toys who have served their purpose? Did they recognize Belos’ claims of speaking for the Titan as false? Since Bill has one of Flora’s books and Tarak even has a Penstagram account… I guess it was a good thing Hooty ate the letter; Otherwise Luz wouldn’t have made that connection to the Collector! WHEW!
There’s just so much lore… So much to wrap up. We now know that all the Titans have been hunted down, save one last one… God what does this mean for King??? Is he gonna outlive EVERYONE??? Oh god… No… Like how he said he KNOWS they’re gonna leave him, so all he can do is prepare! Maybe he can have a proper speaker for himself in Luz but… OH GAWD NO!!! You… You can’t DO this to me Dana! You can’t! YOU CAN’T!
Oh fuck… And since they know; What if there’s conflict?!? What if the rebels (Raine, Darius, Eberwolf) ponder using King??! I don’t think Raine would but then again, if push comes to shove… Because if Belos is going to kill everyone to revive a Titan and use it as a sacrifice; Wouldn’t sacrificing King save so many more lives? And preserve the isles? The Collector is freed either way, but offering King to the Collector, to convince him to forsake Belos’ plan… It could save most of everyone!
Oh man. If there would’ve been an arc of the Bad Girl Coven clashing with Raine’s group over what to do with King… Let him be used to take the burden of everyone else’s death and play it safe; Or believe they can stop Belos AND keep King alive! Oh god oh man… Oh TITAN! And in two episodes, King faces the implications of being a Titan…
(Damn Belos you really had all you needed to free the Collector in YBOS. Or did he know, and that’s why he let King go; Because with King, his plan that involves killing all witches is redundant? And the Collector will be pissed when he finds out Belos kept him from that???)
And now the EC is cracking down on everyone… Including Hexside. But we still got Steve… Or will Steve be in O Titan, where are Thou, since he’s at the knee? And King is going to the knee to speak with the Titan, and Steve allies with and helps him? NICE! King as the true speaker for the Titan…!

Here's Eclipse Lake, an episode that has been highly anticipated! Will it top Knock, Knock, Knockin' On Hooty's Door?
I'll skip the pretense: No. It won't.
You'll see under the cut.
Hmm, that list of ingredients for the Grimwalker...I'll let other people theorize about this (like @sepublic ), but it sure looks like a thing
Guess the mysterious green goo won't cut it, huh?
Belos face reveal already?! Huh, didn't expect it so soon.
Oh, no, he's hot! (And I'm mad about it)
Still an ass, though
Now we know why Hunter was wearing a different outfit (because people fixated on that for some reason)
Amity with the clipboard gives me strong Dipper vibes
GHOST! My beloved!
I need a moment because CAT!
(Also, someone pointed out earlier that Ghost was based on Dana's cat, and that's super obvious in hindsight)
Raine?! Oh, wait, you mean rain. Sigh.
Eda gets training tips from DBZ confirmed
(Also Amity's face when reacting to Eda's explanation is priceless)
Oh God Eda's a weeb I need another moment
Damn, Amity just straight up calling Eda old
Oh, loopy Luz
(The abomination holding the tissue box is adorable for many reasons)
Yeah, don't want Luz to eat the McGuffin
I have several questions about those Tamagotchis that I'll refrain from listing here
Amity your Odalia is showing
Girlfriend counter: 1
(Yes I am introducing a counting gag, deal with it)
Was wondering if they were ever gonna reference the dissection incident. We've come a long way, baby!
Oh, so that's what everyone was looking at
Luz honey your enthusiasm is admirable but no
Luz burrito is quite cute, though
Girlfriend counter: 2
(Damn, still wild to think that that's the case)
Just occurred to me that "Boots" is probably shortened from "Bossyboots" from earlier
Guess the Luz hiss compilation needs to be updated again
Those tunnels ain't the only thing around here that's unstable, amirite?
Oops, guess Kiki was justified, after all
Maybe don't talk so loudly about your plans, dude
That is her son, get it right!
Serves you right for having that stupid strand of hair sticking out like that
Is this just the episode where everyone dunks on White Boy? Because I can totally get behind that.
Already mentioned this, but I am loving the parallels between Katara and Amity with that bottle of abomination goo. Insert obligatory "Two Nickels" meme here about Mae Whitman.
We really are just dunking on the white boy and I am living for it
Hooty had to get it from somewhere, I suppose
Nothing says mother-son bonding like shooting things at each other (see also: Separate Tides)
I'm sure the magic bouncing off the veins won't come into play later at all
Oh well, at least the echolocation looked cool
At this point Amity would kill Hunter for a Klondike bar
Wait why does Hooty need a chair
Willow with the galaxy brain ideas
"A bad but sad boy" Luz is a genius at succinctly summing people up
Kikimora continues to be unhinged. Ironically she's not wrong about Hunter.
Motherfucker stop acting like you know what that says
(Also, projecting much?)
Girlfriend counter: 3
Friendly reminder that Hunter is still an antagonist
Uh oh
UH OH
I know someone mentioned Willow having the brain cell, but honestly it seemed like Luz had it this whole time. And that's not good.
WHY IS FOOL'S BLOOD EVEN A THING
Aaaaand cue the getting screwed over
Further reminder that he's still an antagonist (Apparently there's a vocal segment who's Really Mad at him that seem to forget this fact)
You unhand Ghost right now!! And Amity too, I guess.
(I kid, she's literally my second favorite character)
For what she did to Raine it warms my heart to know Kiki has had zero peace of mind
Wait, the Abomatons are Transformers?! Okay, that's kind of awesome, actually. Alador might be a shit dad but he is a brilliant inventor.
Chucking kids off cliffs is a surpisingly common pastime in the Boiling Isles
Owlbert no!
Eda did spend literal decades fighting the Owl Beast within, so I guess she can't be blamed for not thinking to talk to it
Also hurry up guys I'm very concerned about Owlbert
Fuck yeah Harpy Milf!
Yay Ghost returns!
She's glad they're okay (I didn't need to take this, I just thought it was cute. Also this is surprisingly high quality considering I just took a photo of my TV screen)
Oh, so they do have video games in the Demon Realm. That or Luz introduced them.
Trailer shot!
Oh dear, we about to have a fight over the key
Wow, being so high ranking under Belos is really bad for mental health
Jesus Christ Belos what have you been putting in this poor kid's head?
Leave it to King to give radical recontextualizations
Amity, I'm glad you remembered/realized this about Luz, please don't let the sad white boy play you like that again
Also, I appreciate the gesture you're making, and it's a wonderful summary of your character development, but goddamnit he's gonna go for that key because he's STILL AN ANTAGONIST
"Being nice usually works for Luz!" A) Not always, and B) Amity I love you but Luz you are not. A valiant attempt nonetheless.
Ooh, cool fight scene!
Always lovely to see such superb animation
I was privately griping about not seeing Amity use magic for so long, and now I am fed
Don't think I didn't hear the glass breaking
Appreciate your ass from a hole in the ground, Golden Boy!
(jk I don't actually feel that strongly about him still. That kind of threat still isn't cool, though)
Oh so that's why it's the Common Mold!
It's kinda cute, actually. Or maybe it's just because it's Luz.
TIL Hooty is heat resistant
Apparently Owl Beast just wanted a snack
Girlfriend counter: 4
Also love how calling Amity her awesome girlfriend is literally the first thing Luz says to her upon returning.
Yesssss return the hug! You deserve it!
(I know there are higher quality versions of this screenshot, I just didn't feel like looking around)
King demands huggies, too! (And gets 'em)
Reminder that Amity is smart as hell. I knew that glass breaking indicated something!
So once again I've been had. I let the fandom trick me into thinking this episode would be way more intense. Guess that one screenshot was from the next episode.
Overall this was...fine. Some nice Lumity moments, Harpy Eda strutting her stuff, that gorgeously animated fight sequence; those were all lovely.
I do wish Willow and Gus had a bit more to do. And I'm still rather unenthusiastic about Hunter, to be honest. I've seen his type several times before, and the path they have for him is rather obvious. I may never share the fandom's love for him, and I guess I'll have to deal with that.
Anybody who says this was better than KKKOHD is a damn fool.
Mid season finale next week! I think Yesterday's Lie will finally bring the pain!

Owl House s2e4
I keep wanting to post my “““liveblog”““ commentary on this one but it made me Too Emotional to do my usual raving. (My threshold for verbiage when I’m Actually Feeling Emotions is waaay low, okay. At a certain point, I legitimately can’t Make Words Fit the Feelings. So I never figured out what I really want to say about this episode.)
But with my spoon count being critically low lately and the fact that I’m now 3 episodes behind, I just want to post it As Is and get caught up!
So here’s my commentary with Massive Spoilers for “Keeping Up A-Fear-Ances”!
I have a Lot of Questions alongside the feelings, too.
Oooh, stone backstory? Unexpected but welcome.
So uhh. Where did Lilith get her blue stone? Just the "fashionable" thing?
--
"We have never seen a curse quite like this."
I want to know who came up with this crock of horrible. Had they ever experimented with it on someone else? The demon equivalent of animal testing? Is it lesser curses combined like the unholy glyph amalgamation Eda created?
--
Upon rewatch: I'm realizing this is where she probably got the idea to use potions for it! Overhearing the Healing Coven guy recommending it. Eda Actually Implemented the Healer’s Advice, and LO. IT MADE A DIFFERENCE.
--
Oh wow, I'm not very good at gauging visuals, but Eda must have run away quite young.
--
The poster on the bottom right.
The hair. The guyliner.
Eda listened to emo boy bands, apparently.
--
Guh.
I Will Never Look Upon Sharp Iron Railings The Same Way Ever Again.
(it’s a Locked Tomb thing. It’s a Pavlovian reaction. It’s also a Nexus thing and it’s also Big Emotional. HHHHFF)
--
...Oh. Huh. So... the suitcase kinda just. Came out of nowhere?
--
THE ALARM CLOCK HAD A HEART.
First Hooty, now this thing?
--
Eda's morning routine looks so much like me on weekdays.
--
The fridge just says "C O O L".
--
"I had no idea this is what I did to you. I am so, so sorry."
Big :C Feelings. Too big for me to write about, but I'm feeling them.
--
"What? Suddenly curious about my past?"
"Always. ALWAYS curious."
Oh, dang, me too. Definitely me too.
(Give me ALL the worldbuilding! All the character developement! All the lore! All the random little bits of trivia that makes this world so CHARMING. But especially about the Clawthornes.)
--
...What's that thing on Gwendolyn's wrist? Right wrist? It kinda reminds me of flan. Or maybe a banana split.
I feel like it's maybe a coven mark, but I can't tell what it is, let alone which one it's for. She joined the Beast Coven, right?
--
"And who knows what they put in those nasty concoctions."
"Actually, I do."
So why doesn't she make her own, then? Why does she have to buy them from an elixir guy if she knows what's in them?
(Then again, I know what's in my medications and supplements, but that doesn't mean I can grow my own valerian and rhodiola and make my own vitamins and CERTAINLY can't make my own prescription meds, even if I theoretically Know How.)
--
...I am so very glad that my mother doesn't treat me like Gwendolyn treats Lilith. My father's kinda... ehhhh. It's super complicated with him... and don't even get me started on my stepmother.
But my mother WILL go out of her way to spend time with me, wants to talk to me, frequently asks how my week's going, helps me figure things out, or just talk... and it's really nice to have her.
--
Gwen, basically: I'll only help you if you help me.
Does she really need Luz's help that bad? Would she have helped her if Luz couldn't give her anything in return? And really, what DOES Luz offer her?
--
...squints.
Squints real hard.
What use does a healer need with those powerful artifacts?
Big Distrust.
(Post-rewatch reaction: V I N D I C A T I O N . )
--
Snowy Ribcage, Swampy Toes, Palm Stings?
So the Giant (Titan?*) that comprises Boiling Isles isn't just a decoration, it's used for geography. We've seen, if I remember correctly, the ribcage and (leg bones, maybe?), but this tells us the skeletal remains may indeed be complete!
(* I've been following a theory that it's the bones of The Titan they venerate, possibly even where their magic comes from. That does beg questions on how it died, if it's even really dead, and how long it's been there if it's so decayed. How long before there was life on the corpus?)
--
"didn't even stick around to watch you hatch"-- I mean, to be fair, from the sound of it, with King saying "something happened" (but he was too small to do anything), he probably WANTED to stick around and watch him hatch, But Something Happened.
--
"Knife season came early this year."
STKFGHNLDLVJAI. Speaking of charming lore. Knife season?
--
...the... night market... even has ice cream? I mean I'm glad they get to experience ice cream on The Boiling Isles, but now I'm seriously trying to figure out what it tastes like.
Especially "Franken-Fruit".
--
Oh no.
Oh no.
Baby's first transformation. <:c
--
....what happens if the "inner beast" catches inner Eda? Is that her way of fighting the curse even when she's “overtaken”?
--
Is Gwen saying "sweet flea", right, not "sweet glee"?
--
"Still got it!"
So it looks like Mama's where Eda gets at least some of her power from, huh?
And/or cleverness that kept Eda on the run.
How many times has Mama Clawthorne done this, I wonder?
--
.......So Mama Gwen has both beastkeeping magic, and could summon those tiles, which seems like it would be more construction coven magic?
--
Does this count as a kaiju fight? (probably not because they're not big enough. But the thought amused me.)
--
"Dang. That is GOOD elixir."
Miracle in a bottle, love.
(I know the feel because when they finally FINALLY tried the meds that actually WORK with my absolutely miserable stomach condition, the relief just to be able to do things normally SOMETIMES is so immense. When you spend so long desperate to make it stop and it just, doesn't, after trying *so many things*, when you finally find something that works even just MOST of the time, you take it and you keep it as close as you can.)
--
I don't really have the spoons to get into it or even figure out how to Do Vague Emoting right now, but every Gwendolyn is saying in the last quarter of the episode is Making Me Emotional. (Especially when she's calming her daughters. T~T)
--
"Titan's Blood"? Bones I get, but where do they get the blood??? (I want to say it's a plant sap or something, like dragon's blood, but I don't want to commit to it.)
--
Not the only human to have lived in Bonesborough? "Titan's Blood"?
Why am I thinking Emperor Belos? (He seems to need some sort of... ichor... to power him. Like artificial witch bile, maybe.)
Although, Gwen talks about her "great grandmother" telling her about this other human. 50 years (of Belos' rule) could be two or three generations, more like two really, but we don't know how old Belos is, or really where he comes from. He could have been that human her great-grandmother knew about before he became Emperor.
--
Also, the fact that "Titan's blood" can cause leaks BOTH ways... Doppelganger Luz?
Real question is, was she an INTENTIONAL plant, or an accidental leak?
--
The Suitcase Portal can be opened intentionally, so can Titan's Blood be used intentionally, too? (Is the Suitcase Portal powered by Titan's Blood?)
--
"Someday MY hair is gonna be big enough to do that, too."
Girl's got a dream!
(And King's "You actually WANT that?" made me grin.)
--
So they even reincorporated the fire bees from s2e1! But have they addressed what happened with the scrying potion Lilith made up for them? What did they see? Anything worth mentioning? Or was the narrative framing meant to be more about Lilith Making The Gesture than The Discoveries?

What constitutes a ‘Demon’?
There’s been some discussion amongst this fanbase about what exactly a ‘demon’ is. We know they come in a wide variety of shapes and forms, and we know that demons are evidently capable of full sapience (but not all of them are).
From what we know thanks to King, our not very preeminent scholar on the matter, demons are “grim tricksters of the twilight, creatures of sulfur and bone,” that they “live only to create chaos and misery”, and all have a weakness to purified water (and passive-aggressive comments).
What purified water exactly is in the context of this show, I’m not sure and it might not even be elaborated upon, but it’s fun to think about! So perhaps ‘demon’ refers to any creatures with a weakness to purified water. While King’s account should admittedly be taken with a grain of salt, considering how inaccurate he was with the Snaggleback (or not, since according to @anistarrose we may have simply encountered a juvenile and not a full adult), what his words seem to imply is that demons are nocturnal, are said to cause chaos, and are made of sulfur and bone. That last bit intrigues me the most- Humans already have sulfur in our body, so that implies that demons have a particularly high ratio. That, or witches simply have little to no sulfur in their bodies, seeing as how humans aren’t from the Demon Realm and wouldn’t be included in that context.
But what about magic? I’m of the assumption that demons can’t do magic, and perhaps that’s what differentiates them from witches. However, in Covention, two witches from the Bakers Coven try to invite King, which seems useless since we know he doesn’t have a magic bile sac.
And how do we know? In Episode 8, Eda is in King’s body and attempts to cast magic while trapped at the Kitty Cafe. Eda is an incredibly skilled and experienced witch, so she’s never had an issue with the skill of casting magic, and even if King had an incredibly diminutive sac that hasn’t fully developed, it should’ve yielded at least some kind of spell. Eda states that she’s “no longer a witch” indicating she knows King isn’t, and Roselle and Dottie agree.
However, if one considers the theories about King having once been the King of Demons, and even the Boiling Isles Titan, then... he could be a one-of-a-kind person. Meaning, there’s no one like him, so no one actually knows his true capabilities and nature. However, King is certain that he was the King of Demons, so for now, let’s just say he is one.
So why would those two Baker Witches be interested in King joining, if he can’t do magic? Perhaps they don’t realize he’s not a Witch because they’ve never seen anyone else like him. Maybe it’s just a throwaway gag/joke that I’m taking too seriously. Perhaps non-witches have some value to covens as testers and voluntary subjects. Amity says the Covention is only for witches, did those two bakers just assume King was a witch because he was there? We see this guy at the Covention;
And he looks a lot like this demon;
But it’s highly likely he’s just there as a placeholder background character.
Could a demon perform magic if you transplanted a magic bile sac to their heart? If so, would ‘demon’ more specifically refer to beings who are born without magic, but still capable of it later on down the line? Eda seems to be under the impression that Luz can’t ever gain a bile sac, so presumably neither can demons, but maybe there’s a difference between human and demon anatomy to be considered.
The line blurs when we acknowledge Adegast, AKA that one-off minor villain who died in his debut. Eda calls him a puppeteer, specifically a “demon who specializes in scamming and manipulating people.” Adegast is a demon, but he can also conjure powerful illusions. Do these illusions count as magic- Specifically, illusion magic? When we first meet ‘him’ in his wizard illusion, he briefly summons two spell circles, but is that actual magic or just an illusion that looks like magic (versus actual magic that creates an illusion)? Perhaps Adegast’s illusions technically aren’t magic, at least not magic as the Boiling Isles defines it (presumably something to deal with a bile sac). If he were an Illusion Witch, why is he in the Potions business? Is it like Willow, where she was placed into a track she wasn’t good at?
We see Adegast create an illusion by spraying Luz with a cloud of smoke, and when his puppets are destroyed, they dissipate into smoke, so perhaps that’s what they all are; Just smoke and mirrors, minus the mirrors. So because Adegast’s illusions don’t come from bile, it’s not magic, ergo he’s not a witch and this lends further credence to the ‘Demons are those who can’t do magic’ theory. On another note, we see Adegast revert to a smaller ‘true’ form after being wounded by Luz... is this form the result of magic, or just an illusion or the effects of a potion?
(If his illusions don’t come from magic and he can’t perform it, then Adegast probably shouldn’t have entered the Potions business when Potion magic is such a big deal that there’s a designated major coven for it. Even if he got Eda out of the way, he’s competing with literally every other Potion Witch in the Boiling Isles, and they have the advantage of magic! Maybe he uses his illusions to make his potions seem more potent than they are, who knows? This lends to the unpleasant image of him spiking potions with his illusionary gas, but this show has always been pretty horrifying, so.)
Hooty is referred to by the Demon Hunters as a ‘house demon’. There’s the possibility that Hooty was made by Eda, since her owl constructs resemble him so much, and Hooty mentions Eda teaching him everything he knows. However, the Demon Hunters also mention removing Hooty from the house, when he IS the house... Perhaps this is a case of characters not fully understanding who they’re interacting with? We do see living alarm bells at Hexside and the Covention center, and a doorknob that tries to eat Luz in Episode 2. Could the term demon also apply to living fixtures who are made for a purpose?
If demons also refers to living beings who are made, I assume Abominations don’t count as demons because they don’t eat and thus aren’t living, which would explain that distinction.
Is that why Eda calls the Bat Queen a demon, since palismans are living beings who are made? However, we don’t know if Eda is aware of the Bat Queen’s palisman nature or not, so her being a demon could just be an assumption on Eda’s part. Palismans also presumably have magical abilities (and we see the Bat Queen appear to use a spell to bind Willow and Gus). So, CAN Demons perform magic, or is there a misconception here?
There’s also the possibility that ‘demon’ is just a catch-all term. An othering term, meant to describe anything that isn’t a witch. Only... witches come in a wide variety of appearances, some more inhuman than the rest. Are witches all the same species, and thus able to procreate with one another (and thus a demon is a being a witch couldn’t reproduce with)? Do all witches, amongst their bile sacs, share a common DNA or ancestry? Are they all the same species, merely different in appearance because that’s just the way they work, or because of magic causing changes? Or does it just refer to non-humanoids?
Maybe ‘demon’ is just a societal definition, and a loose one at that. Maybe it DOES refer to animals and beasts, but because of social biases, some characters are called demons when they’re not? Beast-keeping is a term, but Demon-keeping isn’t, as far as we know. Getting into further speculation, could ‘demon’ refer to the original inhabitants of the Boiling Isles? Could witches have come from another land beyond the bones of the titan? Are demons the creatures born directly of the titan’s flesh, or perhaps the parasites that inhabited its body? The descendants of its equivalent to gut bacteria and white blood cells? The Boiling Isles is located within the Demon Realm, which could imply they’re progenitors of some sorts. Of course, maybe demon also has multiple definitions as well.
Overall, here are my proposed ideas for what defines a ‘demon’ in the Boiling Isles;
-Not capable of magic due to lacking a bile sac
-The indigenous population of the Boiling Isles
-Wildlife in general, as well as those linked to beasts or like them
-A social term for those perceived as more animalistic, regardless of such an observation has actual scientific accuracy or not. Perhaps the social aspect of the term is also for beings who aren’t immediately identifiable, don’t belong to a specific species, are one-of-a-kind, etc. AKA it’s the Boiling Isles equivalent to the term ‘cryptid’
-Non-humanoids
-Those vulnerable to purified water, with a presumably high concentration of sulfur making up their anatomy
-Anything living that isn’t a ‘witch’, specifically the species (this applies to living constructs as well, presumably, though if it extends to Palismans is unknown)
-An unknown, perhaps yet-to-be introduced factor
-A term with various definitions and meanings depending on the context
-Some combination of the above-mentioned ideas
What do you guys think? It is worth noting that King refers to demons as “creatures like me,” which implies perhaps some shared genealogy/something objective and physical, not just societal, but who knows? Perhaps the most important question to ask is;
Am I overthinking things?
