The demilich! When a lich loses its soul cage but doesn't die, its body eventually crumbles. It falls into involuntary hibernation unless disturbed while its mind wanders the planes, as its magic and items infuse with its form. When disturbed and it snaps back to life! they can make clouds of debris, cast any spells from any item they've absorbed over thier life (get creative), and have innate magic to fly, teleport, and manipulate or launch items. and that spectral hand they can summon can lift 19 pounds, so actually has some force behind it. Note however, they do eat souls. So watch out for that.

A demilich is formed when it loses its soul cage (or phylactery). With the passing of time the lich's body starts to erode leaving nothing but the skull. Even if it stil has necromantic powers that transformed into blight crystals due to their concentration, the demilich cannot cast spells (only innate spells). You can surmise that a demilich is a sorcerer that failed their ritual of undeath and became an almost-lich. They don't know at the beginning, of course, only time will tell if they were successful in their quest for power and immortality or if their bodies will crumble to dust leaving only their heads. Nobody knows for certain if the demilich is permanently gone from this world once you destroy the skull. Some say that the bonds with this world were severed thus it cannot come back to this plane, but others ponder if a demilich would reappear in a distant future, because the body was destroyed, not the lost and forgotten soul.

This was a lil' NaNoWriMo-esque project of mine -- I had an idea for an adventure that I used as a random background reference in one of my other fics, and I wanted to see if I could work it up into a playable D&D module! :D

I haven't had the chance to playtest it yet, but if it catches your interest, do please give it a try and let me know how it goes! Constructive feedback always welcome :)

On the left is the Will o Wisp, a 1 foot (30 cm) ball of spongey stuff, that mostly appears as a hazy ball of light! Comes in any color, and has shocks and invisibility if that's your fancy.

On the right is the demilich, a lich without a body. Deadly, but it can't even cast most spells anymore unless its done a lot of enchanting prep. So it's just a flying skull. Pretty gems, but don't touch them, they'll eat your soul.

Been thinking about the hemi-demi-semi-lich I encountered last holiday season since it’s rolling back around. I technically did watch it regain its strength and then killed with using a bathtub of Coca-Cola, but maybe it’s still around. Hard to say really…
