A stylized soul effigy decorates the grave of Ensign Ebenezer Wells, 67 when he died in 1758. This carver did beautiful work. The pinwheels on each side of the soul effigy suggest that the entrance to eternity is close at hand.

320 years ago, the raid in Deerfield was at the center of the fight for control of North America

The Deerfield Massacre was a leap year, February 29, 1704, attack on a remote Franklin County colonial settlement by French and Native American raiders. Forty-seven colonists were killed and houses were burned down, and more than 100 colonists were captured. And those that weren't killed by their captors, trudged about 300 miles to Canada.

In the 320 years since the Raid on Deerfield, plenty of books have been written about the massacre. Author James Swanson has just released "The Deerfield Massacre: A Surprise Attack, a Forced March, and the Fight for Survival in Early America."

The night that changed Deerfield forever: New book gives a comprehensive look at the infamous Deerfield Massacre of 1704

When it was all said and done, more than 40 colonists, including children, were killed in town and more than 100 were taken captive with the intention of marching them back up to French and Native territory in Canada, where those who survived the 300-mile trek either tried to make their way back to Deerfield or they chose to remain in Quebec or join Native tribes.

So this album came out in 1976. It still stands up after all this time. I'm sitting in Powder Hollow Brewery in South Deerfield, MA enjoying a beer, and "boys are back in town" came on. I just love how music can hold on and sustain over time.

I call these types of 18th century graves “tablets of the dead.” But as seen here they don’t hold up well. New structures were put in place to hold what fragments are left. Some pieces of the original tablets were placed on top of these new structures. And to the right there’s a pile of the old legs and fragments that remain from these historic graves. A small hill seen is the distance is actually a mass grave for the 47 men, women and children who were killed in the pre dawn raid by the French and Indians on March 1st, 1704.
