Oh, Deer! 🦌
Oh, Deer! 🦌 #Wildlife #Deer #AnimalPopulation
Image Credit: George Hodan The deer population has become a serious concern in many parts of our area. Many residents complain that they are a nuisance and also a danger where serious accidents are occurring from them darting, without warning, in front of vehicles. But recently, complaints have risen, although it is deer hunting season (when people hunt for preparing venison), and residents are…

So my hiking route today took me through a deer park with, I kid you not, a 50+ herd of albino/leucistic fallow and (not very) red deer… what are the changes lol
Now I’m imagining poor Vasco in this Where’s Waldo situation, once he gets a grip on himself and goes back to find Machete.
(The expressions in Hound Mode btw were delightful!)
Ah, that must've been quite a sight! It's always such a staggering feeling coming across a big herd of any large animals, at least if you ask me. The fact they were all white just adds to the effect.
I hope Vasco would've fetched Machete and showed him the deer as well. I don't think he's encountered many other albinistic animals, at least in canon. He might've been impressed.
#also I'm quite jealous#we don't have red deer in Finland and only a small struggling population of fallow deer in the southern end of the country#our deer species are moose/european elk#reindeer (both wild and semi-domesticated) and roe deer#and invasive whitetail deer#which was gifted/introduced here in the 1930's by the Finnish Americans living in Minnesota#answered#hrh-spinach#I don't know much about deer parks but even if those deer were being deliberately bred for albinism/leucism#it's still neat seeing so many at once

It's been a while since i was last on this blog, besides the interesting Plasmoid race that's giving me ideas, what other unique races are there?
Also what is your opinion on potatoes? 🥔🎀✨️
You actually caught me in a moment where I haven't been paying the most attention, just went from near a month of 12 hour workdays to trying to refill the queue decimated in that time XD In general we've been doing the loser's bracket of Mordenkeinen's monsters and all the PC species. So we've had a good amount of the weirder monsters lately, like the star spawns and hags. I got a lot of entertainment out of the war over the demon lords when some main tournament bits posted out of turn (didn't have time to refresh queue with the right monsters).
Things are about the heat up as we launch into the main tournament though, and PF2e monsters in a few weeks! I'm especially excited about the PF2e stuff, and have spent my last 2 days prepping like 50 of them.
Oh, and potatoes are some of the finest things known to our species, the Inca should be celebrated worldwide for thier contribution to humanity! They have gotten me through the toughest times. Did you know they have all the carbs and nutrients needed for our survival except proteins, fatty acids, calcium, selenium, fibre and vitamins A, B12, E, K. Cycle in some beans occasionally to cover half of what remains, some vitamins (or better, some veggies) and milk (or leafy veggies like spinach or turnip greens) for a cheap and tasty way to stay perfectly healthy on little money. That + some occasional cheap meats or bones begged from the local butcher kept me alive for a while! Hell, Potatoes+Zucchini/Squash+cheap cuts of meat+leafy greens+beans are most of what I eat NOW
#I'm not vegetarian or vegan but I respect the hustle and meal plan so long as you're not a dick to me.#I avoid stuff with cruelty which is a bit easier since I live in a rural area. I can get stuff straight from local farmers.#and the deer population is out of control thanks to low predators. leading to hunting ordinances and pretty cheap venison.#but the POTATO. Potatoes. Corn. Rice. Wheat. Our greatest agricultural achievements as far as I'm concerned.#not tournament#answers

was watching springwatch last night and there was a rly cool thing about the capercaillies and trying to help them repopulate via providing carcasses for the pine martens (who were successfully reintroduced) so that they'll eat that and not the capercaillie eggs. and thats very very cool if itll work. also 3 birds 1 stone, because you can use the invasive deer for food, feed the pine martens, and protect capercaillie nests all in one
#i say this knowing pine martens dont eat a huge amount of deers but still. one down. 10000000 to go lol#like and subscribe to kill an overpopulated invasive deer#i hope so bad wolves or lynx get reintroduced because the deer need to be dealt with so bad. aspens are getting eaten !!!#the wolves or lynx (any predators) are good not only for eating the deer but also to keep them moving so they cant just sit in one place#and breed and breed and ravage the native plants#if deer population got under control it'd help restore native scottish habitats .#fuck you england fuck you rich people for destroying the landscape for sport hunting. im going to get you#kiddo say#i saw a pinemarten irl once it was rly cool#watched it for quite a long time

“Ohhh capybaras are so cute, they get along with all kinds of animals! 🥰” WRONG
youtube
They don’t care for pigs.
#In case you’re wondering what a capybara is doing in the middle of a city… they’re kind of everywhere#They’re the South American equivalent of deer (I mean we have deer too but they’re way rarer)#And like I live in the 4th most populous city in the world and I could go find a capybara right now with minimal effort#Anyway I got recommended this short and I’ve been laughing about it for 5 minutes#Animals#Capybaras

Accurate representation of how I feel searching for deer related things on eBay and it's all stuff made from antlers or apparel for people who make hunting deer their whole personality.
#it makes me very very very sad and disturbed—hunters have their role in keeping populations down given humans killed deer's natural predator#but man....... hunting for food is one thing but I can never stand people who kill just for sport & in excess#(... the rest of the results are mostly Christmas decorations ^^; )#animal death *#Unico#Osamu Tezuka

the more I read about current efforts to restore biodiversity the more I believe that north america should be eating primarily bison and elk/deer meat. While conservation herds and wild bison are important, the vast majority of plains bison (420,000 as opposed to 20,500) are in commercial herds.
If we are going to get that number even close to what it used to be (millions!), it is going to be because of an increased demand for bison meat. An increase on our reliance for bison would likely see more effort put into bison genetics, which would serve conservation efforts.
Eat bison.
#and bison are more sustainable than cattle!#they evolved to live here!#the reason why we don't is entirely colonization and part of decolonizing north america has to be going back to traditional food systems#i know i said elk also and i stand by that but bison isn't a gamey meat and there's already an industry around it#so there's more possibility in the immediate future#but i believe commercial hunting of elk/deer/whatever is necessary to get populations to sustainable levels (in addition to predators ofc)#conservation

the whole 'there are not very many Great Causes worth fighting for these days' from Julian scanned as WAY more out of touch than the moon landing thing for me the first time i read tsh
#like to the point of it being actively jarring when i got to him saying that#the secret history#'they landed on the moon??' well okay i guess it's not really their area#and they've been really out of touch with the news since it's also not really their area + they've been#off to the woods/a country house/etc and getting very drunk and killing deer and also people#i don't remember the exact dates re the moonlanding + the events of the book but like.#Sure. that's probably fair or at least kind of understandable#that could Feasably Happen On Accident at least#but julians like 'there isn't much worth fighting for these days' and um.#if you pay attention to literally anything happening in the world at any given moment at all. ever.#....what? literally what do you mean by this?#there have always been So So many Great Causes that people are dying for all the time constantly forever#and even if you've somehow managed to comoletely block out literally every piece of news/political development/etc#that's not really a reason to assume there Aren't. that's a reason to go like. well if there are any Great Causes left today then#I don't know about them. and even if we assume he's defining what makes a cause worth fighting for by classical values#and saying that that means for example that he wouldn't necessarily think of say the civil rights movement or liberatory movements etc#as fitting (which i think is also probably debatable- it comes to mind that the athenians valued (their own) freedom. political engagement#was valued but only the right kind from the right people. etc. what i'm saying is that#no i don't think they actually fit what julian would be thinking of as the classical mind's* idea of a great cause worth dying for#but also you could debate that/frame things differently/etc (*presumably there is a more particular subset of the population he has in mind#than just 'classical' or 'greek' in actuality. like. specifically those from whom we having writing/would have citizenship/etc.))#i'm certain there are plenty of arguments to be made. like plenty of people are fighting for various countries#it's not like wars or empires have stopped existing or other myriad conflicts have stopped existing#also in typing this i've realised he was maybe forshadowing henry's death#and now i need to go look up the exact quote and make another post i guess.#(also disclaimer that i'm aware i've phrased a lot of this clumsily. it is midnight these are the tags of a tumblr post and i am not sober.)#anyway to rephrase my initial point i just think with the moon landing thing that's One major event you missed.#if you're saying that there are No Great Causes Worth Fighting/Dying For (with the understanding that you think those are a thing#that can exist) then i think maybe you managed to skip out on hearing about significantly more#than just the one major event. that's much harder to manage i would think

hello, please may I ask what your view is on cliftondeer. org?
They look good to me from what I can see! They’re focused on humane population control using sterilisation and release methods, and are a non-profit working under a research grant to monitor effectiveness. They are very transparent, even about accidental casualties. Based on what I can see from their website, it is the kind of program we desperately need to see implemented on a larger scale.
