You can't help but feel a pang of jealousy, even thought you know it's wrong. After all, you are just his friend, his loyal confidant. You're merely the person he'd turn to for advice on wooing yet another Tinder date, and the one he'd dial up in the middle of the night whenever heartbreak soon follows.

And still, that persistent feeling lingers deep within you.

You're perched at a table inside Angel's Share, sipping a cocktail tasting of harsh alcohol and unresolved bitterness. Jean rests her head on your shoulder, letting out a tired yawn as she absentmindedly plays with her empty glass.

Lisa's voice, sultry and slightly tipsy, breaks the silence. "Another round on me," she purrs, swaying as she rises from her seat. She makes her way towards the bar, where Charles meticulously polishes glasses, weariness evident on his face. "And perhaps some shots," she adds playfully, her giggles trailing behind her as she approaches the counter.

"She sure has a penchant for drinking," Rosaria comments, her raised eyebrow conveying her amusement. She's siting beside Kaeya, directly across from you. She runs a hand through her choppy wine-colored hair, ruffling it. Despite having consumed twice as much alcohol as you, she remains composed, her sharp magenta eyes retaining their intimidating gaze.

You remain silent, an uncomfortable know forming in your stomach as you watch Kaeya and Rosaria lean in closer to each other. Their conversation is hushes, effortless. It upsets you, how natural they seem together.

Your feelings for Kaeya have been brewing ever since that rainy and windy evening four years ago. He had spotted you struggling with your broken umbrella as you exited the Favonius University library after a late-night study session. He offered to walk you to your metro stop, insisting it was his duty as a gentleman.

Of course, you were initially hesitant accepting help from a completely stranger, but you soon discovered you shared a web of mutual friends. Like Lisa, from your classical literature class, and Albedo, your shy roommate's biochemistry lab advisor.

From that point, your friendship blossomed — you'd go on barhopping adventures and various parties across the city, indulge in movie marathons (sometimes just the two of you, other times with his friend group, who quickly became your friends too).

Back in those university days, he would always share his lunch with you, despite his campus being quite a distance away from yours. It was a simple gesture, but to you, it spoke volumes about his thoughtfulness, and perhaps even, the bond you two shared.

And there would be moments when you couldn't help but believe your feelings were reciprocated. Like those nights when he'd snuggle in closer to you after a tiring day at work, claiming your place is conveniently closer to his job, and he didn't want to bother with the inconsistent late-night public transport. Or those times when, amidst the pulsing music and the swirling crowd inside the club, his gaze would always find yours, a playful smirk gracing his lips.

You often found yourself soaring in your imagination, your hopes like wings made of paper and dreams soon to be crushed. You'd believe you could almost reach out and touch the deepest part of his soul, but just like Icarus, you'd inevitably get burned by the reality.

A sudden snort and the clattering of glasses shatter your little daydream, snapping your attention back to the scene around you. Lisa playfully nudges a shot and a cocktail in your direction as she settles back besides Jean.

Kaeya and Rosaria each take a shot glass, clinking them, waiting for the rest of the table to join in.

You bite down the inside of your cheek, but silently grasp the glass and raise it. The little glasses clink in unison and the table cheers, but you remain quiet, unable to shake off the unspoked emotions that linger deep within you.

You down the shot, barely suppressing a grimace at the the strong juniper-flavored liquor.

"I'm going out for a quick smoke," you announce, rising from the table. Kaeya shoots you a concerned glance, but you respond with a polite smile.

Outside the dimly lit bar, you fumble with trembling hands to light up a cigarette. You inhale deeply, and savor the light head rush that accompanies the exhale. The wisps of smoke dance under the glow of the soft yellow lamps.

"Smoking is bad for your health," a gruff voice interrupts your solitude. You glance up, met with deep red eyes and fiery red hair tired in a high ponytal.

"Diluc," you greet the man. "I thought you weren't working tonight."

"I'm merely checking up on my establishment."

You nod, and the two of you fall into silence as you finish your cigarette.

"Is Kaeya inside?" Diluc asks as you extinguish the glowing end of your cigarette on the nearby trashcan.

You nod. "Yeah, he's in there, having drinks with Rosaria, Jean, and Lisa." Your voice quivers slightly when you mention Rosaria's name, and you hope Diluc doesn't catch your subtle slip. If he does, he doesn't acknowledge it.

"And you're not joining in on their antics tonight?"

"I am," you reply, "but I just felt like I needed to clear my head for a bit."

A silent understanding flickers in Diluc's eyes.

"Listen," he begins, "I know you have deep feelings for my brother. You must realize that he can be quite oblivious at times, and he might need a little nudge in the right direction."

You let out a dry laugh. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Diluc doesn't press further. Instead, he heads toward the bar's entrance, waiting patiently for you to follow. With a grateful nod, you join him.

Your friends have finished their drinks during the time you spent outside smoking, and Kaeya and Rosaria are nursing another round of alcoholic beverages. Rosaria seems unfazed as she downs her Death After Noon, while Kaeya squints at his remaning drink.

Lisa and Jean wave you over, and you notice they've already packed their belongings. It's clear they're ready to call it a night.

You have yet to finish your cocktail, so you insist that your two friends head home, promising them you'll text the moment you arrive home safely.

However, the drink refuses to go down, and becomes an uncomfortable lump in your throat, as you watch the friendly banter between Kaeya and Rosaria.

A surge of bitterness and jealousy rises within you as you watch Kaeya tenderly move a strand of hair from Rosaria's face. To mask the feeling, you down the remainder of your drink, trying to ignore the unpleasant taste of the beverage. You slam the empty glass on the table and stand you, swaying slightly.

"I think I'll head out. Goodnight. Enjoy the rest of your night," you mumble, voice strained.

Barely a few steps away from the bar, you feel the tears stream down your face. In an attempt to stifle your sobs, you retrieve another cigarette and light it up.

Walking down the cobbled street, a lone raindrop lands on your nose, and the wind begins to pick up. You hadn't brought an umbrella with you.

That night, you allow the heavy rainfall to drench you, letting it numb your other senses, providing a temporary solace from the turmoil in your heart.

Storm Boris devastates Central Europe, death toll rises

Storm Boris caused widespread destruction in Central and Eastern Europe, killing at least 15 people. The storm swept across Romania, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, southern Germany and parts of Austria, causing heavy rain, flooding and strong wind gusts.

Romania

In Galati county in eastern Romania, the hardest-hit region of the country, heavy rains caused widespread damage, affecting about 5,000 homes and leaving at least 25,000 people without electricity.

Romania’s emergency department confirmed the discovery of six bodies, including three elderly women and one man over the past two days.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis deplored the situation, saying:

“We are again facing the effects of climate change, which are increasingly present on the European continent, with dramatic consequences.”

Rescue teams rescued hundreds of people in 19 areas of the country.

Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, heavy rains fell for three consecutive days and flooding affected mainly northern parts of the country, leaving more than 50,000 homes without power.

Authorities reported one death, but said seven people in the country were missing, The Guardian reported.

The risk of flooding remains critical for rivers such as the Odra, Opava, Branna and Novohradka, especially in Jeseníky and Pardubice, Radio Prague International reported.

Although water levels in the upper reaches of the rivers are decreasing, the flood wave continues to travel downstream, threatening lower areas such as Uhretice and Chroustovice, the station added.

Austria

Austria has also been hit hard, with 24 villages in Lower Austria declared “disaster zones” and the death toll rising to three, the country’s vice-chancellor Werner Kogler told TV X.

“We have just received the terrible news of two more fatalities in Lower Austria,” he stated, expressing his “thoughts and deepest sympathy” for the relatives, families and friends of the deceased. He also added:

“The situation in the areas affected by the #Hochwasser (flood) remains very critical,” he warned, calling on the whole country to “follow the instructions of the emergency services on site.”

On Sunday, he said a firefighter had died battling flooding in Lower Austria after authorities declared the province surrounding the capital Vienna a disaster zone.

Chancellor Karl Nehammer noted on X:

“The Austrian Armed Forces are deployed in the storm-hit regions wherever help is needed.”

Rail services in the eastern part of the country were suspended and several metro lines in Vienna were closed due to the threat of the overflowing river Wien, APA news agency reported.

Poland

One person has drowned in Poland’s Kłodzko region, bringing the country’s death toll to five, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said.

He said on X:

“I have ordered the Minister of Finance to prepare funds for emergency aid and flood damage removal. The Minister for European Affairs will apply for European aid.”

He said he had asked the defence minister to “deploy additional forces to the threatened areas.” The Polish prime minister also added:

“After consultations with the relevant ministers and services, I have instructed to prepare a Council of Ministers resolution on the introduction of a state of natural disaster.”

According to The Guardian, around 1,600 people have been evacuated in Klodzko.

Because of all this, Warsaw is expected to declare a state of natural disaster, although it has not done so during previous difficulties such as the COVID-19 pandemic or major floods in 1997 and 2010, Polish Radio reported.

Hungary

In Budapest, officials have raised the forecast for water levels in the Danube River to rise to 8.5 metres (27.9 feet) in the second half of this week, nearing the record high of 8.91 metres recorded in 2013, The Guardian reported.

Zoltan Kovacs, the spokesperson for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, said on X:

“Amphibious tracked vehicles are en route from Szentes to Pilismarot to support flood defense efforts. The Hungarian Defence Forces are playing a key role in the flood protection efforts, deploying various equipment. Nothing is more important than the safety of the Hungarian people.”

Slovakia

Concern has been mounting in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava, where authorities have been taking protective measures to contain the surging waters of the Danube. Police have extensively “warned the public about the danger” of walking along the river, a Bratislava Police spokesperson told CNN on Monday.

Extreme rainfall events are likely to become more frequent and intense as the planet warms, science shows.

An analysis of a 2021 heavy rainfall event in Europe, in which more than 200 people were killed, found human-caused climate change had increased the likelihood and intensity of these events in the region. The World Weather Attribution initiative — a group of scientists who study extreme weather and published the analysis — concluded “these changes will continue in a rapidly warming climate.”

Genuine question and no judgement. How do you feel about she/they transfem f1sh? I wouldn’t say they’re my non-binary awakening but my ideal transition goals for a while has been a fag ass dedf1sh (to the point an irl who I became tumblr mutuals called me out on how similar i am to deepest of metros dedf1sh [which I had very much been doing on purpose]) and I feel like there’s a lot of interesting ideas around depersonalization and loss of a sense of self that you can do in a unique and very interesting way with a transfem version of the character. But then again octarian culture does not have the same norms and social pressures as ours.

Do you also get uncomfortable with any pronouns f1shes when she is used for them? I’m very interested in your connection and idea of the character, you’re very cool and I love seeing all your dedf1sh postings.

Heyo! I know I said I don't personally like she/her dedf1sh but I wouldn't say I'm uncomfortable with it. I think my issue stems more from the newer fans erasing their transness all together (usually the cishet guys but I've seen some others too </3). A good chunk of the time when I see people use she/her for them, it's people being like "that is a CISGENDER WOMAN!!!!!" and not usually in a trans way. There's nothing wrong with f1sh being a she/they transfem, in fact I'm always open to new headcanons, same goes for all pronouns. Even if my f1sh is very masc, they still give me transfem vibes if that makes sense.

When it comes to being specific about f1sh pronouns, it's usually for canon f1sh or my own personal f1sh. In reality I can't stop anyone else from making their own personal hcs for them and what pronouns they use. If someone wants them to be she/they or any pronouns, there's really not much I can do about it besides move on. And if I'm talking to someone about a f1sh with any pronouns besides they, I'll use the pronouns they headcanon f1sh to have.

This one’s a bit hard considering how most of the leads are female, but probably Iso Padre. He has a nice design and the fact that he washed out of the Deepsea Metro’s testing system but has been riding the train for so long he’s forgotten his own name is a really quick and effective way to make the player weary of the place. I like that he gets to make to the surface eventually as well. Hope he’s enjoying his coffee :)

2. Favorite female character

Who else but Agent Four? Maybe I’m a bit biased because I played Hero Mode a ton when I first got Splatoon 2 due to the lack of online (seriously scummy Nintendo) and really got into the deepest recesses of Octo Canyon and therefore her character, but there’s a ton of cool stuff about her that no one else aside from the other Fourheads seem to care about. Parallel Canon leaves me with so many questions I wish the game would answer. Just you wait, she’ll come back in Splatoon 4 and they’ll throw her a grand parade! You’ll see! You’ll all see!

3. Least favorite character

This one’s also hard, but I think I’d have to go with Smolusk. All of the other villains have something that makes them interesting, from Octavio’s mix of both a leader put in a hard position to protect their people and DJ jargon to Mr Grizz’s corporate persona eventually morphing into the giant bear trying to cling onto the past. Smolusk has that too, being a literal manifestation of Marina’s fears of chaos and what it does blown out of control. They’re fine, I guess. I just don’t really find baby characters that entertaining.

4. Favorite ship

I don’t really have one of these for Splatoon, but Pearlina is one of the main ships for a reason. An ex-weapons engineer escaping to the surface and meeting a headstrong, freshly kicked out of her band inkling who wants to form her own band with her practically writes itself, and Side Order is filled with stuff with them to the point where their final song is called SPECTRUM Obligato and they bring back the greyscaled world with rainbows. Octo Expansion is my personal favorite with them as well.

5. Favorite friendship

Four and Eight. I saw the official art of them being roommates and something just clicked in me. I could talk more, but I wrote an in-progress fic about them as well.

6. Favorite quote

Salmon Run is my favorite game mode hands down, so almost all of Mr Grizz’s voicelines are carved into my mind.

7. Worst character death

Splatoon’s lore has many deaths, but I’ll only count the ones we see on screen. Captain Cuttlefish’s fake out death was just kind of unnecessary. I knew he wasn’t really going to die, so it just felt awkward as the giant rocket literally right in front of us started to take off.

8. “This made me so happy you have no idea” moment

Parallel Canon’s reveal. It was a short lived happiness, but a happiness nonetheless. I was literally that one wojack pointing image, and was so ready to see what would happen next with Four. (So much for that)

9. Saddest moment

Going through Kamabo Co and realizing what happened to all of the other test subjects that succeeded. Going through hellish trials all in hopes that you’ll one day make it to the surface only to have it ripped out from under you as you get sliced to death and your remains will be used to essentially zombifiy people.

10. Favorite location

The Ruins of Arc Polaris. It’s a cobbled together station welded together with human signs spread around the place with GRIND RAILS and a GIANT ROCKET IN THE BACKGROUND. I was pretty saddened when it didn’t return in Splatoon 3.

Right now they are mentoring Mike an Octoling courier who found himself tied up with the Squidbeak after a delivery gone wrong.
