January TBR
It’s been awhile since I’ve done a TBR and I’m trying to ease myself a little into it so I haven’t added too many books. I also tried to make sure I have a variety of genres so that I’ll hopefully find something that piques my interest. I’ve more or less chosen one book per week, although there are two books that release later this month and a comic.
I don’t think I’ll necessarily join any…

National Library Lover’s Month with Dee Garretson
To celebrate National Library Lover’s Month, we’re talking to our authors about libraries, and author Dee Garretson is speaking with us today about her love for libraries. REYET TRAP releases April 3, 2018. Add it to Goodreads.
Welcome, Dee Garretson!
When I do school visits, I almost always have a student tell me they can never find a good idea when they are asked to write a story. I like seeing the student’s expression when I tell them there is one place they can go that is always full of ideas-the nonfiction sections of the library, particularly the children’s nonfiction books. Browsing through the nonfiction sections, especially the books about different countries, different kinds of animals and how to do crafts, sports, games and art can spark dozens of ideas. That’s not to say fully formed storylines pop into my head, but even one picture can become a mental thread that may eventually lead to a tapestry of ideas which will make up a good story.
Tumblr media
Even when writing science fiction, where I’m making up worlds, I use existing places to come up with a place that will feel real to a reader. Part of REYET TRAP is set on a desert world. I’ve been to deserts but I’ve never lived in one so I went to the library and browsed through books about cities and towns surrounded by the deserts of Earth. I wanted ideas not only for architecture but also how cultures adapted to dry places, including the clothing they chose and what kinds of plants and animals would be around them. Just looking at all the possibilities and the human ingenuity in adapting sparked enough ideas that I was able to come up with a unique desert culture that would be believable to a reader.
I couldn’t write fiction without a library. I am lucky to live in Cincinnati, a city with a fantastic library system, but even if I were in a smaller place with a smaller library, I’m sure I would haunt the place as much as I do my current library. Growing up, I practically lived at the library in my small town. All these years later, I still remember exactly where some of my favorite books were shelved. I didn’t know then that I would become a writer, but all those books I read or even just looked through for their pictures, taught me there were infinite possibilities to explore and the next idea is there waiting for me.
REYET TRAP releases April 3, 2018. Add it to Goodreads.

No planet. No home. No hope.
Quinn Neen and his friends have survived the uprising and the ruthless Fosaanian leader’s attempt to kill them, but the galaxy is still hurtling toward war. With just a few days before Quinn starts his mandatory military training, he plans to spend the time with Mira, the Fosaanian girl he’s in love with. When a mysterious message forces them on a journey to an isolated planet named Reyet, Quinn’s plans quickly change.
A coup on Reyet throws everything into chaos, leaving Quinn and Mira evading enemies they know, and some they don’t, including the planet itself. Now, time is running out for Earth, Fosaan, and Reyet, and there may be no place left in the galaxy that’s safe.

Meet the third of four amazingly talented authors joining the Swoon Reads family, Dee Garretson! We were transported and transfixed by her compelling historical novel about spy intrigue, a clever young woman and a (super-hot) American cowboy set against the backdrop of World War I. Don't miss The Finding of Secrets!

2019 is at an end, the Roaring Twenties is right around the corner, and here is my round up of my reading for the year!  Favorite books read, goals achieved (and unachieved), and thoughts for the year to come!
First book read this year: All is Fair, by Dee Garretson Final book read this year: Of Fate and Phantoms (The Ministry of Curiosities #7), by C. J. Hunter
Favorite Reads of the Year
The Golem and the Jinni, by Helene Wecker The Priory of the Orange Tree, by Samantha Shannon Geekerella, by Ashely Poston There Will Come a Darkness (The Age of Darkness #1), by Katy Rose Pool Bloodwitch (The Witchlands #3), by Susan Dennard Soul of Stars (Heart of Iron #2), by Ashley Poston The Archived duology, by Victoria Schwab Red White, & Royal Blue, by Casey McQuiston Lockwood & Co series, by Jonathan Stroud Tarnished are the Stars, by Rosiee Thor The Ministry of Curiosities series, by C. J. Archer The Mortician’s Daughter trilogy, by C. C. Hunter
Challenges/Goals from 2019
Finishing the Series 2019 (To finish/catch up on series that were previously started prior to the start of 2019.)
Personal Goal of Series to Finish: 1-4 Series of Books Actually Finished: 5 Challenge: Completed!
  Goodreads Challenge
Personal Challenge: 80 Books Total Books Read: 82 Challenge: Complete
Goal for Next Year: 85 books
Goals I Set Myself for 2019
BLOG MORE – yeah sorry this just didn’t happen.  In fact, my reviews kind of slagged by the end too, both in content and in posting them in a timely manner
LESS E-GALLEYS – I did do better on this one, I think.  I still downloaded some that I was highly anticipating, and some I read but not all which was kind of bad, but I definitely cut back!  Which certainly made me feel better stress-wise
Reading more middle grade books – Eh, this one didn’t happen so much.  I read the Lockwood & Co series, which I absolutely adored, but those books aren’t even regularly stocked on our shelves so it’s a little hard to promote them.
Bring the number of own-but-not-yet-read books down and my read books up – closer, but no, didn’t happen.
Most Anticipated of 2019
The Raven and the Dove, by Kaitlyn Davis Among the Beasts & Briars, by Ashley Poston The Queen’s Assassin (Queen’s Secret #1), by Melissa de la Cruz Where Dreams Descend (Kingdom of Cards #1), by Janella Angeles Rebelwing, by Andrea Tang Scavenge the Stars, by Tara Sim The Serpent’s Curse (The Last Magician #3), by Lisa Maxwell The Princess Will Save You, by Sarah Henning House of Dragons, by Jessica Cluess Sunshield, by Emily B. Martin Sisters of Sword and Song, by Rebecca Ross As the Shadow Rises (The Age of Darkness #2), by Katy Rose Pool The King of Crows (The Diviners #4), by Libba Bray
I have decided to not make any goals for next year aside from the Goodreads challenge.  I just need to not force myself to try to do anything and then feel bad for not achieving it.
Looking forward to reading for me.  What I want, when I want, without feeling any kind of obligations to fulfill any sort of goal.
2019 Reading Round Up 2019 is at an end, the Roaring Twenties is right around the corner, and here is my round up of my reading for the year!
