Tuesday’s Treats is a weekly blog post dedicated to newly released books that I’m most excited for. (Books are in no particular order.)
All books featured this week will be released: JAN 22nd
1. Circle of Shadows (Circle of Shadows: 1): Evelyn Skye (goodreads) (book depository)
Sora and Daemon have spent years studying magic and fighting for the Society of Taigas in order to help protect their kingdom, Kichona. They want to make their mark in the world, which is a bit hard when their kingdom has been violence free since the Blood Rift Rebellion. But when they come across a camp of mysterious soldiers while on a scouting mission, Sora and Daemon decide that, in order to protect their kingdom, they have to infiltrate the group.
I absolutely loved The Crown’s Game when I read it a couple of years ago, so I cannot wait to see what Skye comes up with next.
YA Fantasy; Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins, Hardcover (US)
2. Undying (Unearthed: 2): Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner (goodreads) (book depository)
Unearthed followed Jules and Mia as they searched through an Undying temple in search for technology to help save their home planet. Undying continues that story after the explosive cliff-hanger that only left me wanting more. I’ve been impatiently waiting for this book ever since I finished reading Unearthed early last year, so I’m so so so excited that it’s finally here!
YA Science Fiction; Disney-Hyperion, Hardcover (US)
3. Parkland Speaks: Survivors from Majority Stoneman Douglas Share Their Stories: Sarah Lerner [Editor] (goodreads) (book depository)
Parkland Speaks is a collection of poetry, speeches, journal entries, photos, letters, and other written accounts of the tragedy that occurred on February 14, 2018 at Majority Stoneman Douglas from those who were there. It shines a light on what happened, how it affected the students, and a cry for change and hope for a better tomorrow.
Nonfiction - Current Affairs; Crown/Random House, Paperback (US)
4. The Birds, the Bees, and You and Me: Olivia Hinebaugh (goodreads) (book depository)
Lacey is the last person to be giving advice on sex (she hasn’t even kissed anyone), and she’s totally okay with that. She’s perfectly fine with her grades, her music, and her best friends. But when she sees how her school’s abstinence-only sex-ed class is hurting more than helping, she decides that someone has to give advice, so it may as well be her.
I am here for a sex-positive YA book, so I cannot wait to dive into this one.
YA Contemporary Fiction, Romance; Swoon Reads/Macmillan, Hardcover (US)
5. Who in the World is Carmen Sandiego?: Rebecca Tinker (goodreads) (book depository)
This is a total throwback book for me. I used to love playing the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego video game back when I was a kid, so I have a feeling I will love this mystery story about her just purely for the nostalgic factor alone.
Middle Grade Mystery; HMH Books, Hardcover (US)

Any reccs with Asexual MCs, bonus if they *aren't* also Aromantic but beggars can't be choosy. Thanks so much for all you do.
hmm, asexual MCs, haven't looked for those in a while but I think I know a few
Loveless by Alice Oseman - the MC is aro/ace but there are other characters who are ace/romantic and I just loved the explorations of asexuality and platonic love in this one :3
Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman - another aro/ace MC but the book isn't focused on her relationship status, and Akemi is such an underrated author, I just have to recommend her any chance I get 😅
That's Not What Happened by Kody Keplinger - Lee, the MC, is romantic ace and I think pursues a relationship through the course of the story? it's #OwnVoices rep too but the bulk of the novel is about the aftermath of a school shooting so read with caution
Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand - I loved the ace rep in this one. Zoey was a wonderful character and her boyfriend was so supportive and understanding
Before I Let Go by Marieke Nijkamp - Corey is the ace one here and there are some nice convos about her identity. romance isn't the focus of the book but the commentary on mental illness and creativity is pretty good
and honorable mentions to Tash Hearts Tolstoy by Karthryn Ormsbee, Let's Talk About Love by Claire Kann, The Birds The Bees and You and Me by Olivia Hinebaugh and Vanilla by Billy Merrell ^.^
#replies and answers#lgbt books#asexual characters#book recs#we need more ace boys in YA#the only other one i can think of is aled in radio silence but he's demi

The Birds, The Bees, And You And Me by Olivia Hinebaugh (spoilers!)
Synopsis:
Seventeen-year-old Lacey Burke feels like the last person on the planet who should be doling out sex advice. For starters, she’s never even kissed anyone, and she hates breaking the rules. Up until now, she's been a straight-A music geek that no one even notices. All she cares about is jamming out with her best friends, Theo and Evita. But then everything changes. When Lacey sees first-hand how much damage the abstinence-only sex-ed curriculum of her school can do, she decides to take a stand and starts doling out wisdom and contraception to anyone who seeks her out in the girls' restroom. Meanwhile, things with Theo have become complicated, and soon Lacey is not just keeping everyone else’s secrets, but her own as well.
Review:
Listen, I know that this isn’t necessarily a queer book but one of the main characters is asexual/biromantic so LET ME HAVE THIS!
I’ll start off by saying that this book is absolutely amazing. I love how it’s sex-positive while also retaining a nice ya feel. Also, I love books about sticking it to The Man. We need more books like this.
I found this book incredibly well-written, and I feel like the writing just propelled the story even more. I also love how this book was more than just about the spreading of sex ed, but also about Lacey’s love life and also their band! The characters were also amazing. Evita could be a bit selfish at times, but I still found her quite lovable. And Theo was also the absolute sweetest. I may be a flaming homosexual, but I want a Theo.
Would I recommend this book to people? YES. Everyone should read this book at some point in their lives. because it is just absolutely wonderful and I had no complaints besides it just being too short! This book also happened to be the inspiration for the name of my side blog, @birds-bees-you-me
Rating: 5/5

Lacey Burke and her friends Evita and Theo are completely disgusted by the sexual abstinence policy promoted in their senior seminar class. Abstinence hasn't stop teen pregnancies in their high school. In fact, they recently met Alice, a pregnant teen who chose homeschooling because she felt uncomfortable at going to school.
Lacey has always felt comfortable when discussing sexual topics with her mother. Lacey was the result of her mother's teen pregnancy so Lacey knows the difficulties first hand. Her mother works as a labor and delivery nurse at the local hospital and has encouraged Lacey to train and volunteer as a doula who assists mothers during labor.
When the discussion of healthy sexual habits begins in senior seminar, Lacey and Evita are frustrated that the use of condoms is not part of the lecture. Even though Lacey has never even been kissed, she knows the importance of protection during sex. It becomes obvious from her classmates' responses that most of the students are not only uncomfortable about the discussion of condoms, but also don't understand the proper time to use them or even where to get them. Lacey decides to make it her mission to educate her fellow students.
Lacey, Evita, and Theo work together to create an educational pamphlet explaining the use of condoms and even dental dams for protection during oral sex. With the help of her mother, Lacey gets free condoms and other items for protection against sexually transmitted infections. Their new friend Alice volunteers her currently empty locker as a place to distribute the pamphlets and condoms, etc. Lacey also uses one of the girls' restrooms as an information center where students can freely ask questions about sexual activity.
Helping their fellow students makes sense until the locker distribution system is discovered by school authorities. Accused of providing lewd materials, Lacey and her friends find themselves defending their right to offer alternatives to the school's abstinence policy.
THE BIRDS, THE BEES, AND YOU AND ME is the debut novel of author Olivia Hinebaugh. She combines friendship and music with the difficult questions and feelings about teen sexuality. Some readers may be surprised by her upfront, honest discussion of sexually active teens, but this is a book perfect for 2019 and the attempts to take away personal control over our bodies, especially for women.
NOTE: I just learned about a service called The Pill Box which offers birth control options by subscription through the mail. Check it out!

The Birds, the Bees, and You, and Me [Olivia Hinebaugh]; 2019 YA Releases #bookblog #bookbloggers "...a commentary on the horrors and damage of abstinence-only sex education..."
The Birds, the Bees, and You, and Me by Olivia Hinebaugh has one of the best titles I’ve ever seen and I’m pretty sure I’m adding it to my TBR based on that alone. I don’t even care what the book is about, I just want to read this one. But, also, in all actuality, I do really think this book is one of the ones that should be a requirement for everyone’s TBR this year. It’s a commentary on the…
