Guys, I'm literally begging you to not make me the "Um, actually" guy right now.

Atlantis is not and has never been a real actual city.

There is literally no historical or anthropological evidence that it ever existed. It was an entirely made up city that Plato created to illustrate his point about the very real threat of political corruption and how if left unchecked, could lead to the absolute devastation of an entire nation and its people.

It's also a fucking Nazi conspiracy theory. I shouldn't have to explain how "a secret advanced ancient civilization whose people were inherently superior and able to dominate all of the Ionian, Aegean and Mediterranean seas" is an absolute red fucking flag.

Hey since the ads are everywhere right now with that awful flesh hat guy, I thought you guys should be aware that Tubi is owned by Fox. Like, the Rupert Murdoch Fox. The Fox that owns Fox News. The Fox that radicalized everyone's family into hatemongers. Tubi is (or at least was) the only arm of their business that was profitable, largely because they do not advertise that they're owned by Fox and are purposefully going after young adults and teenagers who typically lean left (because those people will not touch their other streaming service or their cable network). Just something to be aware of if you decided to sign up to watch the Super Bowl.

Because I find myself (for perhaps the first time in my adult life) actually paying attention to media appearances during an awards cycle, I've been getting a lot of exposure recently to celebrities and red carpet appearances and interviews and thoughts, from lots of different people, about the clothes that various people are wearing, and who let them out of the house looking like that.

And because of this, I found this recent episode of Decoder Ring really really interesting. The episode was hosted by Audrey Trufelman of the Articles of Interest podcast, another favorite of mine.

In it, Trufelman and regular Decoder Ring host Willa Paskin talk about the creation and rise of the celebrity stylist. It's super interesting.

I'm surprised by how many takes on tlou focus on Joel taking away Ellie's agency. And don't get me wrong, I think in 99% of scenarios people should have agency and be able to make decisions. And I even think Joel's death rampage was a 100% motivated by his feelings for Ellie.

BUT Ellie is recently traumatised by her recent kidnapping and assualt. I don't think she is in the right frame of mind to make a decision of that scale. I'm not saying traumatised people should not be allowed to make decisions for themselves but I do think there should be intervention mechanisms when those decisions would lead to self harm/death.

Pre-David I think Ellie could have made a reasonable (if incredibly hard) decision that should have been respected. But not post assualt.

Decently readable Golden Age mystery marred by the period-typical, latent antisemitism; it's not as egregious as other Golden Age stories I've read but it's definitely present in an almost 'background radiation' way

😍 Monoclonius (Zenaidamacrouras1) - reread for stucky book club, forever fave. Featuring environmental policy lobbyist single dad Steve with a dino-obsessed daughter, paleontologist post-doc Bucky, a fantastic co-parenting arrangement, amazing but chaotic roommates and the star of the fic: a purple trilobite plushie named Izzy
