1970 Chrysler 300 Hurst

One of the great unknowns about the 1970 Chrysler 300 Hurst is exactly how many cars were built. Estimates put the total as low as 485, and as high as 502 cars. Regardless of what the figure actually is, the car itself is a pretty special piece of machinery.

The 300 Hurst is a giant of a car at 19′ in length. All of the Hursts rolled off the production line finished in Spinnaker White. The cars were then shipped to the Hurst factory in Warminster, Pennsylvania, where a substantial transformation was performed. The first change to be made was the removal of the standard Chrysler steel hood skin, which was replaced with a fiberglass unit. This featured a decorative hood scoop and the obligatory set of recessed hood locks. The deck lid was also removed, and once again, a fiberglass replacement, complete with a spoiler integrated with the rear quarter panels, was also installed. The White paintwork was complimented by the addition of Satin Tan highlights and contrasting pinstripes, and the wheels were adorned with the same Satin Tan color in the centers. This Hurst is a clean car, with a small area of rust visible in the lower section of the driver’s side front fender, and surface corrosion present on the car’s underside. The Spinnaker White paint appears to be in good condition, but there has been some deterioration of the Satin Tan paint on both the hood and the deck lid. The exterior trim and chrome all look good, while the tinted glass is close to perfect.

The 300 Hurst was a premium car at a premium price, so naturally, it required a premium interior. In this case, seat upholstery was available in a single type and color. Continuing the exterior theme, the color is Saddle Tan, and the material is leather. The plush front seats are not standard 300 items but have been pilfered from the Imperial parts bin. While the original intention was for a Hurst shifter to be part of the interior features, this is something that never eventuated. The interior of this Hurst is close to perfect, with a single discolored spot on the dash pad being the most obvious fault. The rest of it presents in virtually as-new condition, and as befits a luxury car, it is loaded with luxury touches. These include air conditioning, power windows, six-way power seats, cruise control, a remote trunk release, and I think that there also might be an 8-track player hanging under the dash.

The 300 Hurst was the biggest of the muscle cars, and as such, it needed a big motor to get it moving. In this case, it is the TNT 440 engine, pumping out 375hp. The Hurst also features a 727 TorqueFlite transmission, a 3.23 rear end, power steering, power brakes, heavy-duty rear springs and front torsion bars, and sway bars. The exhaust was a full dual system, ending in quad tips. This Hurst hasn’t seen a lot of recent use, and documentation confirms that between 1986 and 2019, it managed to accumulate a grand total of 20 miles! Since being removed from its climate-controlled storage, it has undergone a meticulous mechanical check and recommissioning, and it is now said to run and drive perfectly. The owner does suggest that while the tires look good, they are pretty olds, and replacing them might be a good idea. He also says that the Hurst may need mufflers fairly soon. The car does come with a fair collection of documentation, including the original Build Sheet and Window Sticker, a pristine Certi-Card, Owner’s Manual, as well as dealer paperwork and other assorted items.

While there has always been some question surrounding the build totals for the 1970 300 Hurst, one thing is certain, and that is that there are less than 300 cars in existence today. Pristine examples can fetch sums in excess of $30,000, and even a rough example in need of restoration can still sell for anywhere around $13,000. This one doesn’t need a major restoration, but it does require some cosmetic work. I’m not sure where bidding is eventually going to go with this one, but I would suspect that it will be somewhere around the low to mid $20,000 mark. Even at that price, it probably wouldn’t be a bad buy.

So, I'm obsessively thinking about Tripoke mechanics again.

I'm trying to figure out how I can do what I was doing before with the dice (which I admit may have been too much) but with something close to a poker mechanic - it is weird west with Dinosaurs instead of horses and cows after all, a card game does make slightly more sense than polyhedral dice progression.

The problem was that I was doing a LOT with those dice. (again, possibly too much). The dice could function as a, ranking, oracle (Extreme Yes, Yes And, Yes, Yes But, Neutral, No But, No, No And, Extreme No), dramatic ammo counter, comparative results, damage given, damage avoided, adrenaline, health, injury, injury conditions, moral temptation, and moral degradation/advancement.

The cost of that was careful tracking of the dice you were rolling. That was the main problem of the dice, you had to switch what you were rolling and how many dice you were rolling often. And there wasn't even a mark off and reset since health, injury, and injury conditions were accomplished by actually losing dice. No health score or health track. You literally just got worse in play because you could permanently lose a die when things went sideways. The compensation for being able to lose a die is that you could also get better dice or even more dice from Adrenaline and/or your Devil. The bad was that the dice would just flux from turn to turn. And I admit that might be too much.

However, there isn't as easy a marker in a poker-like endeavor to match you have "set" XdY and both X and Y change in known ways depending on known factors.

I figure I can do maybe half-ish of the same thing with some kind of betting mechanic instead of a card mechanic. Basically a character's sheet determines their chips and the chips they walk away with determines their sheet. The problem is that that really can't alter things round to round because in a betting pot situation you could get too many or too few chips to keep the conflict dramatically interesting. One bad hand could essentially kill the character while the next could make them a demi-god and it just wouldn't work as well for damage, health, injury conditions, or adrenaline.

What I really need for that is something reflected in the cards that you can play (or how you can play them) that you can gain or lose as the fight goes on, that isn't, please hunt through your cards and dispose of all your 9's and 10's or something like that. That's doable with a small handfull of dice. It's not doable with a deck of cards.

Although... I was going to have each player play with their own deck... I could instead have a communal deck and have something like the Dealer Deck (community's cards that the Dealer deals a certain number of cards out of), Player Library (what the Dealer deals into), a Player Pool (what a player can draw from their library in a turn), and a Hand Size (How many cards a player can use to make any given hand). I could make a gain or loss effect any set in that chain.

If I made the scoring more detailed (not hard) I could even make some fairly detailed results.

Hmmmm.....

The easiest effect to create seems like it would be that Hand Size. You simply couldn't make as powerful a Flush or Straight with less cards available to your hand than you could with more. If the max size of your hand is 3 cards from a pool of 5, while your opponent has 5 cards out of a pool of 7, your opponent is capable of scoring higher than you. ...EXCEPT, you would require less cards to be Flush or Straight, so you would actually be likely to win more often even if you couldn't win by as much.

So :/ that wouldn't work...

Tangential Tracking TTs

I am totally sold on the concept. I had a number of high end TTs with conventional pivoting arms. I chanced upon a Harman Kardon Rabco on Craigslist for $200.00. I knew what it was and was intrigued. I got it and really liked how it worked. It did things better than my Sony 2251, it also did some things worse. Vibration isolation was poor. Then I found a very nice Pioneer built Phase linear 8000 ( Pioneer PL1000) which was much better and did OK in the isolation department. Both of those will mount any standard phono cartridge with the PL1000 family using a standard head shell to boot.

It was pure luck I found and was able to get these. I have seen no more of either type locally for several years. Across North America there may be only a few come up in a year. Today I found none listed on the Audio Mart for the whole continent. A more general Google Search gives you ads for units that sold already.

The simple reasoning behind the linear concept is the records are cut on a lathe that tracks straight across the lacquer. Playback should mimic this. More subtle is I find a better and more stable image in the sound and better tracking in the inner grooves. I also like there is far less fussing getting the setup. There is no anti-skating force to always get wrong.

There are very generally several levels of this type of turntable.

There is the ultra high end where the tonearm is a special piece of engineering built for an ultra high end turntable deck.

This is a Clearaudio from Germany. Currently produced. If you have to ask......

There is a merely high end level which are the old halo products from Japan like the Yamaha PX3s, Pioneers, and Mitsubishi LT-20 & 30 decks with factory arms. Here also you find the B&O Beograms like the 4004 in several iterations. All of these use active lateral drives to move the arm along. All are no longer manufactured, but there are survivors. The Beogram has a single source for cartridges but they are quite good.

Beogram 4004. There is one for sale across town for $2000.00. Very pretty.

A bit below that and maybe not that far below are the popular but I consider deeply flawed air bearing arms you can get for more common decks. My criticism is that the tiny cantilever must provide the force to overcome the inertia of the arm assembly. There is a lot of inertia. Dead level with good perfectly centered disks they perform very well.

Next I place the several Harman Kardon STx Rabco turntables. They have an active lateral drive that is a brilliant mechanical concept, but is executed from OK to poorly. The decks are not great as they are framed with sheet metal, but they respond well to modification and tweaking. Mine is an ST5 which is the mechanically simplest and has a metal drive roller that does not dissolve into goo like the rubber ones. The more complex units are far too mechanically complex so they earned a bad reputation for reliability. They are not bad looking.

There are several strange designs made because they could. Mitsubishi and Sony made vertical playing units. I do not like the idea, but they are collectable.

Aside from being compact on a table top, just why????

Then there is the base level of the type. If you look in ads this is most of them. Technics and Sony and many brands are there with a simple and compact design. All these use P mount cartridges. You are not stuck with a single source but selection is far more limited than standard cartridges. Grado makes some, and so does AT.

It is likely that most on the market are these cheaper ones. I have no personal experience, but I have read comments where users were quite happy with them. Typical price is $200.00.

Overall Tangential tracking TTs are uncommon. Good ones surface from time to time at reasonable prices. Then there are the unreasonable prices. If you have lots of $$ you can have a new one off a dealer's stock. Or just keep an eye out for deals that is fun.
