A racist accusation, a botched investigation. Then, decades later, an apology in Boston.

The mayor of Boston formally apologized to two Black men who were wrongfully accused of murdering a pregnant white woman and her unborn child in 1989 – a notorious murder case that sowed decades of distrust between the Boston Police Department and the city's Black community.

"I am so sorry for what you endured," Michelle Wu said in an apology addressed to Willie Bennett and Alan Swanson, at a news conference on Wednesday. "I am so sorry for the pain that you have carried for so many years. What was done to you was unjust, unfair, racist and wrong."

In 1989, Swanson and Bennett were named as suspects in the death of Carol Stuart, whose husband, Charles Stuart, plotted her killing and then accused an unidentified Black man for the murder, sparking what the mayor called a "systemic campaign targeting Black men" based on "a false, racist claim."

Michael Cox, the Boston police commissioner, apologized on behalf of the police department for "the poor investigation, overzealous behavior and, more likely, unconstitutional behavior."

Flanking the speakers were Swanson and members of Bennett's family. The mayor handed them formal apology letters and said the gesture was "just the beginning of a much longer journey of accountability and action."

I would say that there's one story that has been rattling around in my head for a while but haven't gotten around to writing it yet. It's a family drama with magical realism elements...

It chronicles the lives of the members of a family which begins as a closely knit unit, only to be slowly wedged apart by issues that were really always there but ignored. You can only ignore some things for so long...

In a way, you could see it was the elephant, the black dog haunting her waking moments, the looming, lurking knowledge that there will be a day where her friends and family are dead and gone and she's there, telling their stories to people who have long forgotten their names. It was a rendition of Simply The Best that ended with Luis sliding on his knees, a drink raised in his hand, head tossed back. Patrons cheered from the back, while the two brunettes that jumped, in the middle of the song, on stage with him kissed each of his cheeks and skipped to the bar; laughter spilling from drunk lips. Shots kept coming; piling up on the small wooden table Oryn and Luis shared.

The last of the martini was gone in one gulp, and he was grabbing a shot now. Once downed, his face wrinkled slightly, a hiss leaving parted lips.

Family is a social contract and the role of a parent of a child is to provide care. If they are not providing care or are inflicting abuse the social contract is broken. You don’t have to keep contact. You don’t have to visit. You do not need to subject yourself to harm just because ‘they’re family’

Jean-Luc Picard is now part of their lives as he wanted. They’re a family and he and Beverly are married (framed picture of them together). Jack refers to Picard’s last name as the “family name” which indicates they ALL share it. And of course the fact that Starfleet rushed to expedite his enrollment means that Jack has a name that stands out.

When Jack is talking to Q he refers to Picard as his father. Not “Admiral Picard” or “Picard” but “my father.”

There’s a new Picard on a new Enterprise ... a harbinger of the new generation.

got a worm nibbling my brain. can someone help me find a piece of obscure media?

webcomic/indie comic from the 2010s. basically a sci-fi short story about a young girl (with red hair?) who was being raised by scientists as part of an experiment. she receives a haircut/has her head shaved, in preparation for her annual brain scan/testing. it is revealed that while her body is human, her "brain" is artificial, made of computer implants throughout her skull and spine. at some point her biological mother (also a scientist on the same campus?) encounters her and is repulsed, viewing her as a machine who has murdered her daughter.

it was very poignant and it bruised my heart and i can NOT find it anywhere
