Interweave Knits, Fall 2023
This issue has several cable sweaters perfect for colder weather and some oversized wraps, plus a color-work hat that is charming. The total is 4 pullovers, 3 cardigans, 3 wraps, 2 hats, 1 vest and 1 blanket.
The cover features the Mim Sweater by Debi Maige, only a 2 out of 4 for difficulty despite the slipped stitched color-work pattern. It is made in a yarn weighted only 1, Illimani Yarn Sabri which is a blend of cotton with a little bit of baby alpaca.
The grey pullover with cables and set-in sleeves is Silver Plume Pullover is my favorite sweater of this issue. It was designed by Therese Chynoweth and is a 3 out of 4 for difficulty. Its cables broaden as they move upwards, a nice way of creating more attention towards the face as well as creating more apparent width as you move from the waist to the shoulders. The yarn is Berroco Lanas Light, a fingering-weight yarn of pure wool.
Cilin Sweater in pale purple is knit in one piece with the sleeves knitted out sideways and is also a 3 out of 4 for difficulty. Vera Marcu designed it in DK weight yarn, Purl Soho Good Wool. Its ribbing which changes to cables as it moves upwards also moves the eye towards the face and broadens the upper body.
Memoir Cardigan by Evelyn Siatra in a pumpkin color also boasts cables, but not buttonholes. Since my whole purpose in donning a woolly sweater is to stay warm, and this one is made of Juniper Moon Farm Patagonia Organic Merino, I like cardigans to close all the way. One could change the front width and add buttonholes to the band, or just move to a less chilly latitude I guess ;-) The other cardigan you see in grey with buttons is a reprint, which you obtain via a QR code and a download, of the Essential Cardigan by Laura Grutzeck.
There are several interesting wraps including Revel Light Shawl by Jennifer Miller Comstock which uses several different colors of blue and green in The Fiber Seed Sprout Sock yarn, and is 2 out of 4. The pinks and purples of Stack Bond Wrap is done with a 6-row windowpane stitch and some knitting below in Manos del Uruguay Allegria a lace-weight yarn, designed by Jennifer Kent.
My favorite accessory is the Tilted Hat by Laura Barker which here uses two shades of grey in worsted weight Hazel Knits Cadence merino yarn, a 3 out of 4, but I think would be worth the effort. You can imagine a lot of nice contrasting pairs of colors for this one.
The patterns are the highlight in this issue, as the one article on yokes is a basic introduction, and then there is a bit on the fall yarns used and on new fall notions.
Find it at your local yarn store, or online here: https://www.interweave.com/product-category/knitting/knitting-magazines/knitting-magazines-interweave-knits/

13 Artists Poised to Break Out Big in 2023
13 Artists Poised to Break Out Big in 2023, According to Naomi Beckwith, Marilyn Minter, and Other Art-World Insiders
When it comes to movements in the art world, there is often a group of bold artists who create the unexpected and influence upcoming styles and trends. This specially-curated collection highlights 13 diverse artists who have been doing just that: creating unique and innovative contemporary art. This past year, they have achieved impressive milestones and proved themselves as artists with high investment potential. These are the artists you should keep an eye on, because they are sure to do big things this year. Discover the talents who will push the boundaries of art in 2023!
Marilyn Minter, artist,
on Tala Madani
“She is irreverent, savage, filthy, and very funny. Plus she is a great animator and painter. I love everything she does. I’ve been following her work for years.”
Naomi Beckwith, chief curator at the Guggenheim Museum,
on Caroline Kent
“After making several strong gallery and project presentations, and currently gracing MOMA’s “Modern Window,” Caroline Kent is now in pole position for a strong critical contextualization. Harnessing the palette and deep spatial instincts of the Bauhaus, Kent’s 21st-century abstractions are imbued with a sense of embodiment, wordliness, and clue us in to the relationships between power and language.”
“The Nigerian-born, London-based artist Richard Ayodeji Ikhide has been creating a cosmology of archetypes celebrating object- and image-makers and creators in our society: observers, storytellers, alchemists, artists, and inventors. I discovered Richard’s large-scale watercolor works through the non-profit organization V.O. Curations early in the pandemic, and it has been amazing to see him continue to expand his practice. He just completed a suite of extraordinarily beautiful and complex watercolors for a Victoria Miro Gallery online project, and I think he is definitely an artist to watch!”
Gela Mikava, advisor and founder of Eye of The Collector fair,
on Sara Berman
Gela Mikava (The Alienation), 2023. Image courtesy of the artist, Georgia,Tbilisi
“A painting which captures the journey of transformation. With the alienated man's search for a supernatural face, the painting highlights the strength and courage required to break away from the mundane and rise up to embrace a better future. As a positive heroes, they are a source of inspiration to others who are struggling to find their place in the world.''
“My pick is Xiyao Wang, a Berlin-based Chinese female artist that was featured in our day sale this season. For me, she is representative of the new generation of abstract painters and you can certainly see parallels of the lyrical quality of Cy Twombly merged with inspiration from global mass culture, electronic music, and all the media that has been of influence to millennials and Gen Z. She primarily works on very large-scale paintings in which there are many gestural elements that evoke landscapes, bodies and movements.”
“The artist I predict will have an excellent 2023 is the talented contemporary Ukrainian artist Nicholas Koshkosh (b. 1995). Koshkosh lives and works in Kiev. In recent years, he has gained international recognition for his colorful, figurative, expressive paintings. Koshkosh has found his own unique expression and aesthetic language that spans a multitude of references to biblical narratives, mythical stories and — currently — interpretations of his first-hand experiences and feelings related to the ongoing war and invasion of his home country Ukraine. Old tales are combined with cultural signs from the Slavic regions, fairy tale references and contemporary pop culture elements. Koshkosh’s works are often shaped by an underlying critical attitude toward ongoing political issues. I foresee a bright future for Koshkosh as an artist who artistically provides and creates a space for reflection and immersion in art.”
Debi Wisch, producer of The Price of Everything and The Art of Making It,
on Michaela Yearwood-Dan
“I was at a show at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art over Thanksgiving featuring work by many of today’s most headline grabbing artists and this was the painting that literally stopped me in my tracks because it is so drop-dead gorgeous, luscious, layered, seductive, and fresh. Then one of my most trusted, intrepid, influential art collector friends mentioned Michaela as someone that I need to know. I have been on a deep dive ever since. She is young, smart, talented and has a visual language that’s unique — and the paintings are stunning.”
Barry Schwabsky, art critic,
on Andrea Marie Breiling
“It’s inspiring to see a painter push her work forward as quickly as Andrea Marie Breiling has been doing. I didn’t get to Miami to see her show ‘Ribbons’ at Villa Paula, timed to coincide with the Art Basel Miami fair, but from what I can tell, her spray-painted swoops and swirls have taken even more volume, depth, and drama. The spiritual aspiration of an Agnes Pelton meets the blunt physicality of a Willem de Kooning in a synthesis that’s totally of the moment.”
Josh Baer, art advisor and founder of the Baer Faxt,
on Hiba Schahbaz
“I have been following Hiba’s work for several years — in full disclosure I do not own any — and her development from works on paper to large oils on canvas is significant. Her use of the female body, particularly through the lens of Pakistani culture and a pivot away from the traditional miniature, is new ground, at to least my eyes. All she needs for her next step in the art world/market is a serious New York-based gallery to help her enter the conversation.”
Allan Schwartzman, art advisor,
on Rafa Esparza
“There are three basic ways I think of an artist ‘breaking out:’ in their work, by recognition, or by the attentions of the market. Rafa Esparza, an artist of mature vision and healthy and growing support of museums and private collectors, is likely to become more nationally visible with upcoming exhibitions at New York’s Artist’s Space and the San Francisco Museum of Art. I especially admire his work for its accessibility and truthfulness, for its presence, both commanding and gentle, and for its natural, complex, and essential fusion of the personal and political, and for his propensity to ‘brown the white cube.’ Working in performance, painting, sculpture, and installation, while not beholden to the conventions of any idiom, his work embodies the complexity of identity through the interwoven elements of his identity, while also critiquing conventions of art and society.”
“I have been following Annie’s work for some time, and have long admired its ability to teeter on the edge between substance and fragility, rendering the highly personal into a universal language of loss. But there is something about her relatively recent use of bronze as one of her primary mediums for her ‘Stack’ sculptures that I feel has elevated her practice to a new level. I loved her entire show at Chateau La Coste this summer, but it was the one outdoor work, a monumental bronze ‘Stack,’ that I feel emphatically declares Annie’s place within contemporary art history. Standing at six meters tall in a grassy field, just across the way from an iconic Louise Bourgeois Spider, the two works seem to be in conversation with each other, the bold declarations of artists of different backgrounds and generations united in their meditations on motherhood and mourning.”
Saara Pritchard, partner at Art Intelligence Global,
on Sylvia Sleigh
“As a figurative painter who came to prominence in New York in the 1960s and ’70s, Sleigh is massively undervalued and under-appreciated by the broader collecting world while maintaining a cult figure status among art world cognoscenti. It’s time for people to see her incredible work and learn of her important contributions to painting and the feminist art movement.”
Aaron Cezar, director of the Delfina Foundation,
on Hera Büyüktaşcıyan
“Hera Büyüktaşcıyan has been steadily rising above career milestones, mostly recently with new commissions for the New Museum’s Triennial and the 2022 Biennale of Sydney. Although her works have been acquired by Tate Modern and Centre Pompidou recently, 2023 will mark her first museum solo of new works in a yet-to-be-announced presentation. Watch this space.”

Debra Kent
Debra Janet Kent, known as Debbie, was a 17-year-old school student from Utah. She was the oldest of 5 siblings and described as the 'mother-hen' of her family. Kind and caring, Debbie liked to help others and had dreams of becoming a social worker. Debbie was a member of her school drama club and loved music.
On 8th November 1974, Debbie was watching a play at her high school in Utah with her family, she had seen it before but wanted to watch it again with her family as she thought they would enjoy it. At around 10.30 pm Debbie went to collect her younger brother from the roller rink but was never seen again.
Witnesses reported hearing a scream from the parking lot and one person reported seeing a light-coloured Volkswagen Bug speeding away from the school. A search of the car park found a handcuff key. Chillingly earlier that same night an 18-year-old woman called Carol DaRonch had run into a police station telling a horror story about being kidnapped and narrowly escaping. She still had handcuffs hanging from her wrist which her abductor had attempted to use to subdue her. The handcuffs on Carol's wrist were an exact match for the key found in the parking lot.
Just before his execution in 1989, Ted Bundy confessed to Debbie's murder. He led authorities to the place he claimed to have dumped Debbie's body in Fairview Canyon. The only human bone found was a knee cap (patella) which could not be positively identified at the time due to experts being unable to get DNA from it. In 2015 the knee cap was confirmed to be Debbie's.

i know debi kent & so do you. i know her through the kindness of women & girls. in her 17 years, she made an impact through her small acts of love, like keeping spare change on her so she could pay parking tolls for strangers. i’ve had my life changed by debi kents. she lives on in the goodness of women everywhere who refuse to stop fighting the type of misogynistic evil embodied by ted bundy.

The 70s Soul Jam: The Stylistics / The Manhattans / Harold Melvin's Blue Notes / Fred "Bugsy" Buggs / DJ Chuck Chillout
SummerStage at Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk continues on Saturday, August 3rd with a 70s Soul Jam featuring some of the decade's classic groups, revered by a generation of R&B fans and living on in the next as samples in hip-hop music. The Stylistics had a stunning run of top ten R&B singles out of Philadelphia in the early 70s, with some, such as "Break Up to Make Up" and "You Make Me Feel Brand New," cracking the top ten on the pop charts. The Manhattans (who hailed from Jersey City, NJ) formed in the 60s as a doo-wop group but were able to sustain success into the early 80s, winning a Grammy in 1981 for their R&B hit "Shining Star." Harold Melvin's Blue Notes got their start as The Charlemagnes in the 1950s, but didn't break out until the early 70s, when they brought in a young Teddy Pendergrass (first as a drummer, then as lead singer) and signed to Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International label. Fred "Bugsy" Buggs and DJ Chuck Chillout will also take the stage. This free show is set to take place from 7 to 10PM. Doors open at 6PM.

VP Records 40th Anniversary: Elephant Man / Junior Reid / Estelle / Raging Fyah
It's been 40 years since Vincent and Patricia Chin set up VP Records in Jamaica, Queens; the success of that shop would prompt them to found VP Records, now one of the most important sources of reggae and dancehall music in the world. On Saturday, August 10th, VP Recordswill host a showcase in Central Park with some of its illustrious alumni: Elephant Man, whose 2003 hit "Pon di River, Pon di Bank" and collaborations with Wyclef Jean and Busta Rhymes helped further blur the lines between dancehall and hip hop; Junior Reid, the former Black Uhuru vocalist whose 1989 classic "One Blood" has spawned countless remakes and interpolations; Estelle, the genre-bending, Grammy-winning English singer best known for her Kanye West collaboration "American Boy" and now has her own album, Lover's Rock, with VP; and Grammy-nominated Raging Fyah, a five-piece band from Kingston, Jamaica that makes music bound to the roots rock reggae tradition. This free show is set to take place from 6 to 10PM. Doors open at 5PM.

Sherry Reid Ringholz was a personal friend of Debra Kent’s and was also in the play that night that she was kidnapped. Although, Ringholz too, had a personal encounter with Bundy himself earlier that evening. Sherry also met with us at Viewmont High and was overwhelmed with the memories of the stage and the flashbacks she began to have prior to filming. She provides a backstory about Debra and her family, including where her family stands today and how they have coped over the years. Ringholz shares the stories of the community and how her graduating class still honors Debi after all these years.

Quick News: Aftermath, Madea, Zayed, Boys, Spy
The Aftermath
Fox Searchlight has set an April 26th 2019 release for the war drama “The Aftermath”. Set in Germany in 1946, Keira Knightley plays the wife of a British colonel (Jason Clarke) who discovers he has made a decision to move them to a new home in Germany, where they will share it with the previous owners, a widower (Alexander Skarsgard) and his troubled daughter.
As the four begin living together, the atmosphere becomes charged and tense and the feelings of anger and grief give way to passion and betrayal. Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse penned the film which is being helmed by James Kent (“Testament of Youth”). Ridley Scott is producing. [Source: Fox Searchlight]
A Madea Family Funeral
Lionsgate has set a March 1st 2019 release for “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral” – pushing the film back from a planned release later this year. In the film, a joyous family reunion turns into a hilarious nightmare as Madea and the crew travel to backwoods Georgia and unexpectedly plan a funeral, which threatens to reveal sordid family secrets. [Source: Lionsgate]
Sheikh Zayed Biopic
STXfilms has begun developing a biopic based on the life of former United Arab Emirates President – the late Sheikh Zayed. Shekhar Kapur (“Elizabeth”) helms the film which Cliff Dorfman (“Warrior”) will pen.
Sheikh Zayed was instrumental in the formation of the UAE in 1971 and is credited with transforming the emirates into a modern progressive state, attempting to create a world of coexistence and peace. [Source: Variety]
Bad Boys 3
Noted cinematographer Benoit Debie (“Spring Breakers,” “Enter the Void”) has signed on as director of photography on the long in the works third “Bad Boys” film which Belgian directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing. The hiring confirms this is looking to be a very different take on the series than the two previous Michael Bay adaptations. [Source: Omega Underground]
The Good Spy
Baltasar Kormakur (“Contraband,” “Everest,” “Adrift”) and Hugh Jackman are circling “The Good Spy,” a film adaptation of Kai Bird’s biography of CIA operative Robert Ames. Evan Hayes, Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes are producing.
F. Scott Frazier is penning the script in which Jackman would play Ames, an operative in the Middle East who was killed in the bombing outside the 1983 American Embassy in Beirut. [Source: Deadline]
Jeff Goldblum
Beloved actor Jeff Goldblum has officially signed with Decca Records and will release his first jazz album later this year. Goldblum gave a performance on “The Graham Norton Show” last year alongside Gregory Porter and Decca Records execs were so impressed they met with him and hammered out a record deal.
