Did I Forget to Mention?
Klaus Mikaelson x Reader
Masterlist - Join My Taglist!
Written for Fictober 2024!
Fandom: The Vampire Diaries/The Originals
Day Twelve Prompt: "Did you hear that?"
Summary: Nik's SO *might* have forgotten to tell their Mystic Falls friends about their relationship with a certain hybrid. But it's not going to stay secret for much longer.
Word Count: 2,381
Category: Fluff, little bit of Angst
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
"Okay, I'm calling it! Semesters suck, I'd give anything to be on a quarter system if it meant not having homework on spring break."
My friends laughed, even as I groaned and collapsed back into the couch. I got one week to take a break from school, and a small window to reunite with my friends back in Mystic Falls who'd all gone to Whitmore. We were supposed to spend the whole week having fun starting tomorrow morning, but they'd surprised me by showing up at my house tonight to get the party started early. Unfortunately, a few of my classes had given me homework, and I couldn't give in to spring break until I took care of it.
"I have a feeling you're gonna be singing a different tune in May when you're out of class and we've all still got another month left," said Bonnie with a smile.
"You're just lucky we want to enjoy the break with you," Elena added. "Otherwise we'd be getting payback for you showing up to campus during finals week to 'relax and tan'."
"Hey! I also showed up as moral support, thank you very much!"
"How was that morally supportive?" asked Caroline.
"I brought you coffees! And I was exemplifying the light at the end of the tunnel for you guys, when you finished your tests and could join me in summer fun!"
"Oh! Okay, of course," said Caroline in a tone that I knew should make me concerned. "I forgot, you're right. We'll go make some drinks and leave you to finish this, maybe play some music, so we can model that spring break fun, light at the end of the tunnel for you."
"No," I whined, flopping back onto the couch again. "Point taken, and I'm sorry. Just please don't leave me to this homework alone."
"We won't," Elena reassured me, reaching out to rest her hand on my arm. "But... the three of us might make drinks anyway."
I groaned, grabbing a pillow and burying my face in it. Finally, I sighed, sitting upright again.
"Fine. You know where all the stuff is. Just... try not to get so buzzed you tell me to edit a bunch of ridiculous stuff into my paper, okay?"
"No promises!" chirped Caroline as my three friends all stood. I sighed, but before they could get any further out of the room, a loud thud came from the direction of the kitchen.
All three of us froze in our tracks. We'd spent way too much time dealing with supernatural headaches not to go on high alert after something like that.
"Did you hear that?" hissed Caroline. We all nodded, so I gestured for the four of us to head towards the kichen and check it out.
If it was a vampire, it had to be one who'd already been invited in. If it was a different kind of supernatural creature, between the four of us, we should probably be able to handle it. Still, it never hurt to be cautious. Surprises happened all the time, and they could be deadly.
We took up positions just outside the kitchen, then Caroline counted us down with her fingers. When she dropped the last one, all four of us whirled around the corner, ready for action.
I stopped dead at the sight of Klaus Mikaelson hovering by my kitchen island, my heart dropping in my chest. Caroline and Elena both looked ready for a fight, but Bonnie beat them both to it. She raised her hand, and Nik dropped to the ground, holding his head.
"Stop!" I cried, rushing forward and yanking Bonnie's hand down. She stared at me, shocked, outraged, and confused, but to my relief I saw Nik stand up out of the corner of my eye.
Silence settled over the kitchen. Every single person was looking at me, my friends all with incredulous looks and scowls, Nik with a faint smile. For my part, I actually found myself wishing I could go back to my classwork. Just as long as I could be anywhere but here.
Unfortunately, I didn't get my wish. Nik took a deep breath in, and I knew if I didn't speak quickly, he'd take over the explanations for me. As bad as this situation was, I knew that would only make it worse.
I'd been invovled in the Mikaelson drama with the rest of my friends while they'd been living in Mystic Falls, but once they left, I hadn't really given them much more thought.
That is, until I ended up going to college in New Orleans. Klaus and I had run into each other at an art exhibit, and it functioned as a kind of neutral territory. We were both pretty opinionated, and we'd ended up spending the most of the day together, first talking about the exhibit but quickly moving on to other topics, too. We'd had a strange kind of reconnection, although we hadn't really been connected in the first place, and within a few weeks he'd asked me on a date and I'd said yes. We'd been dating since that freshman fall, and recently, I'd caught myself thinking the word love more than once. But I'd been serioiusly, seriously putting off telling my friends back home.
I'd managed to dodge telling them for two whole school breaks now. But apparently, with spring break, my luck was finally running out.
"Alright," I started, holding up my hands before Nik could jump in. "So... Nik and I have been... together... for a while now. We ran into each other again in New Orleans and just kind of hit it off. I didn't want to tell you guys becuase, well... I didn't think you'd take it well."
No one said anything for a moment, like my words were on a slight time delay. Then, all three of my friends started shouting at once.
"Are you kidding me?"
"What were you thinking?"
"Out of every single person in New Orleans, in the world, why the hell did you pick him?"
Nik stepped up beside me as all three of my friends had their reactions. Honestly, I couldn't blame them. It was a justified reaction, especially after how seriously they'd been blindsided. Nik didn't seem the least bit phased as he wrapped an arm around my waist.
"I'm sorry, love," he muttered into my ear. "I didn't realize your little friends were over."
I just sighed. "It's not your fault, Nik. I should've told them a long time ago. Don't worry, they'll be fine."
As one, our attention returned to my friends, who were now glaring at the two of us. I grimaced, but Nik seemed to enjoy the negative attention. He grinned and pulled me in closer to his side.
Bonnie looked on the verge of using magic again, and Caroline seemed about two seconds away from charging Nik to start a fist fight, so I gave his shoulder a squeeze and gently stepped away from him.
"Guys... I'm sorry. I should've told you a long time ago, and I shouldn't have put you in a situation to find out like this."
"Or, how about you shouldn't be dating the guy who tried to kill us all in the first place!" Caroline shouted, unable to contain herself anymore. I grimaced, but didn't step any further away from Nik.
"That's... a fair reaction. But seriously, I'm happy. Happier than I've ever been. And it's not like he's trying to kill any of us anymore-"
"At least not right now," chorused Nik and Bonnie in sync, with two very different tones to their words. Bonnie fixed him with a fierce glare, and I winced.
"Okay, maybe we should all sit down and talk," I said. "Or the four of us can talk, and I can ask Nik to come back later-"
"No way," said Caroline, raising her hands and taking a few steps back as she shook her head. "If he's staying, I'm not."
"Caroline-"
"I need a walk."
With that, she turned and vamp sped out of the house. With a look at me, Elena followed her. Bonnie started drifting in that direction, too, but she paused first, with a scowl at Nik before giving me a slightly less hostile look.
"I'm glad you're happy. Really, I am. But you might want to consider the cost that happiness is coming with."
With that, she turned on her heel and walked out of the room. I sighed the minute she was out of sight, slouching against the corner and sighing. That could've gone much, much better.
"They took that better than expected," mused Nik from beside me. I groaned, and I heard him huff a laugh.
When I straightened up and met his eyes, however, I noticed the slightly guarded expression behind his eyes. It had taken a lot of work to get good at reading Nik, and I still couldn't do it with 100% accuracy. But even so, I knew he wasn't nearly as calm and unaffected as he looked right now.
I sighed. My friends weren't the only people I needed to have a serious conversation with.
"Nik..." I started, taking his hand and settling into one of the stools at the kitchen counter. I pulled him onto the one next to mine, scooting closer until our knees were pressed together and I could keep him close for this conversation. "I'm sorry. I should've told them a long, long time ago. And I want you to know... I didn't tell them because I didn't want to deal with the reaction I knew they'd have. Not because of anything to do with you."
Nik's eyes flickered, scanning my face. I gave his hand a squeeze, but I could tell we weren't out of the woods yet.
"Isn't their reaction everything to do with me?" he asked, his voice low and serious. I recognized the edged glint in his eye as something that usually spelled trouble. I sighed.
"Their reaction is because they don't like you, yes. But my decision not to tell them had nothing to do with you. I would've been just as hesitant to tell them I was dating a guy they didn't like in our class at Mystic Falls. But with you... I should've told them earlier."
"And why's that? You wish they hadn't found me in your kitchen? Wish you could've told them while I was a few states away, so no one would have to face the reality of the two of us being together?"
"No, Nik. I mean, yes, I wish they'd found out differently than this. But I should've told them earlier because... because I have serious feelings for you. And they're serious enough that I don't want to hide them or you. Ever."
Nik raised his eyebrows, the corner of his mouth lifting up in the faintest hint of a smile. I smiled too, recognizing the shift in his mood.
"And what, exactly, might these 'serious feelings' be?"
His tone was mostly teasing, but I decided to take it seriously. I took his other hand, then pulled both into my lap, holding them tight. I met his eyes, making sure he understood just how much I meant my words.
"I love you, Nik. I've been feeling that way for a while now. I'm honestly happier than I've ever been, and you're a big part of that. I love my friends, and I know they'll come around eventually, but until they do? That's their problem. You mean the world to me, and... I mean, yeah, like I said. I love you."
A smile had been growing on Nik's face, and by the time I finished, it was a full-on grin that I only got to see from him every once in a while. He pulled me closer, off of my stool until I stood between his legs, chest to chest with him.
"You love me, do you?"
"Yeah." I nodded, my heart beating out of my chest in my rib cage. I felt pretty confident that Nik returned my feelings, but that didn't take away any of the nerves. "Can't you tell? You're supposed to be able to hear heart rates, aren't you?"
Nik chuckled, pulling me even closer to him for a kiss. I melted against him, happy to feel him smiling against my mouth as his arms wound around my waist. After a few breathless moments, Nik pulled back just enough to speak.
"I love you too," he said, his voice low and his breath fanning against my lips. "Don't worry for a moment that I don't. I would do anything for you. And it's a bit ridiculous how much I mean that."
I smiled, closing the distance between us again as I kissed him.
"I'm glad you came to visit me," I whispered when we paused just long enough to take a breath. "I'm glad my friends know. I'm glad you're here with me. I'm glad you know I love you."
"I agree with all of the above," Nik said with a smirk. "And I'm glad your friends are gone, and that we have the house to ourselves."
Nik leaned forward to deepen the kiss, but I leaned back. I put one hand on his chest and grimaced. He raised an eyebrow.
"Is there a problem, love?"
"...I may or may not have a paper to finish. Tonight."
"Are you sure it has to be done tonight?" asked Nik, his voice low and silky smooth as he ran a hand over my hip. I just sighed.
"Yeah, babe, I'm sure. But... if you can help me get it done, then I'm all yours for the rest of the night."
Nik pulled back quickly, looking at me with one eyebrow raised and an eager expression on his face. I put a hand to my mouth to stifle a smile at his 180 degree mood shift.
"Well then, what are we waiting for? Let's get that paper finished, love. I've got quite a few ideas for tonight."
I just laughed as I followed Nik into the living room. I had a feeling we were in for a rough ride the rest of this spring break dealing with my friends. But I really did love Nik. I was happy with him, and if we could find a way to stay together in our own little bubble of bliss despite the crazy supernatural shenanigans in New Orleans, I knew we'd be able to figure it out in Mystic Falls, too.

Semester's bingo card
You considered yourself grateful. Robert was a saint of a boss, paying you more than anyone else would for a part-time, working university student. Perhaps it was because you'd once found him sprawled on the library floor, unable to move, and helped him. Since then, you'd been offering to do his grocery shopping and sometimes cooked homemade meals for him.
Usually, you'd complain that a man should know basic skills like cooking, but Robert was pushing eighty, his lifelong wife had passed away a few years back, and without kids, he was completely alone. He was a good man, a product of his time, and you tried to overlook that.
You still remembered how the two of you met. You’d been searching for used books for university and found his Tea-Library. You could afford the tea more than the books, so you spent all day reading there. There were almost no other patrons; the place had suffered the saddest story ever told: time.
Next to it was a “pop-up” of whatever new, overpriced coffee brand some influencer had probably promoted, and on the other side, an Apple reseller. From outside, it seemed ridiculous—the original, charming structure surrounded by big, white boxes that blocked nearly all the sun.
The place smelled damp, a mix of mold, old books, and tea leaves. But soon, you started calling it home. Talking to Robert helped you improve your language skills; as a student from outside Paradise, no one had prepared you for the local accent. You did your best. Everything was normal, peaceful—until you asked if you could pick up extra hours. Money was tight, and you’d heard he’d fired the guy who worked night shifts.
Why a tea library needed a full night shift? You had no idea, and in hindsight, it should have set off alarm bells in your mind. But what made more noise than warning bells? Your stomach.
At first, Robert was reluctant, hinting that a “young lady” shouldn't be walking home so late. But you insisted; it was the best solution. You’d cover the full night and morning shifts, go to classes in the afternoon, rest for a few hours, then return for the night shift (with the bonus that nobody came to the library at night). A one-way ticket to dying at 30 from stress. But hey, dead at 30 with a degree—that was something, right?
That’s when you met him. The entry bell rang at 2 a.m. You glanced at your phone, frowned, and thought, ‘Who the hell needs a book and a tea at 2 a.m.?’ But you pasted on a smile and said, “Yes, what can I help you with?”
He was short, especially for a man, and wore those expensive, brandless clothes that rich people often wear. By his manner, you could tell he had more than a couple of million in the bank. His eyes were sunken and a striking gray, piercing against his pale face and dark hair. You froze. If the word “friendly” had an antonym, his face would be pictured next to it.
“Uh, yes? How can I help you?” you repeated, a bit unsure. Two others stepped in behind him—a guy and a ginger girl with a precision-cut bob and golden eyes. They were well-dressed too, but the girl’s chic look caught your attention most.
A gray-haired dude trying hard to look tough lifted one side of his mouth in a smirk and seemed about to speak. But the shorter man shot him a deadly glance over his shoulder, then turned back to you with a softened expression. “Good night.”
“Good niht—I mean, night. Sorry,” you corrected yourself, nerves getting the better of you.
“I’d like a Lapsang Souchong to go and a first edition of Narziß und Goldmund that was reserved for me,” he said bluntly but respectfully.
“Sure,” you replied, slightly confused, hopping down from your tall chair where you’d been working on a last-minute essay. As you searched for the book and let the water heat up, you noticed him waiting by the front desk, his attention caught by your scattered handwritten notes and books.
Back at the desk, you handed him the tea and book. “That’ll be $57.89.”
The room’s tension rose like boiling milk. The two behind him frowned deeply, and the dark-haired man hesitated. “Did I say something wrong?” you asked, suddenly nervous.
“No,” he replied quickly, pulling his wallet from his long black coat.
“You can pay by credit and—”
He placed a hundred-dollar bill on the counter, tucked the book under his arm, and took the tea. “Oh, I’ll get you the change—”
Before you could move, he was already leaving. “Keep the change.”
You stood there, baffled. He gave orders like this was the military. The next time he came in was two days later. He was taking out his wallet, but you stopped him.
“Uh, I just wanted to say I’m new on the night shift and wasn’t aware of the...dynamics.” His piercing eyes locked onto you, making you stutter. “So, um—the owner told me you’re a family friend or something? Whatever you order is on the house. I’ll get you a refund from last time.”
But he just placed more money on the desk. “It’s a tip,” he said flatly. “Take it.”
“I really can’t—”
“You’re a student, right? Probably broke. Take it. I’m leaving it here, so either you take it, or someone else will.”
Soon, you realized he was a regular during the night shift. A book was always left behind for him, under the name Levi Ackerman, and he’d order a different tea each time. Occasionally, he’d be with the ginger girl or a different guy—a tall, dirty blond with a goatee or a dark-haired one. The gray-haired one was the loudest of the group. But recently, he’d been coming alone, asking you for tea recommendations.
“You’re not bad at this,” he remarked once, catching you off-guard. When you looked confused, he clarified, “At brewing tea.”
You felt a silly sense of pride. “Tea is an important ritual in my culture.”
Maybe it was because you’d been missing home a lot.
“How’s university?”
“Good, I’m doing a master’s at Sheena’s University,” you explained.
Slowly, you got used to him coming in and having short conversations. You never opened the books left for him; your boss had given strict orders, and you obeyed. One time, Levi caught you using a pen to scrape the last bit of lipstick, trying to make it last. You must’ve seemed distant.
“Oh, sorry. I wasn’t expecting you today,” you said, snapping back to reality. “There’s no book left behind for you today.”
Levi scanned your face as if he were reading an open book. “No, I came for the tea,” he replied curtly. “What’s the matter?”
Pressing your lips together, you shook your head. “It’s nothing.”
“Tch,” he didn’t seem to appreciate your answer. “I don’t like when people lie to me. And even less when they waste my time. What’s the problem?”
You weren’t sure why you told him; maybe you just needed to vent. But two days later, you regretted it deeply. You hadn’t been explicit—“My main course professor has been... getting handsy. He threatened to pull my scholarship if I reject him. I don’t know what to do.” You hadn’t even mentioned the professor’s name, but a chill ran down your spine when you checked Twitter and saw the news.
“Suicide.”
Now it made sense why he’d demanded you go to his office, yet he wasn’t there when you arrived yesterday. Dead... ‘He’s actually dead.’
‘And the last person he talked to was me.’
You kept checking your phone and the front door, waiting for the police to show up. But they never did. No one came to question you. While that should have been reassuring, it wasn’t. Especially after you began putting two and two together and decided to open the book that was supposed to be picked up that night.
Inside were names, districts, drug codes, and political parties—all written in code. This time, when Levi stood in front of the desk, you were terrified.
“So? How did finals go?” His voice was as calm and monotonous as ever.
You didn’t even want to go near the desk, standing slightly back and nervously playing with your fingers, your nerves eating you alive. “Please... I—I wasn’t asking for a favor. I don’t want to be involved in any of this. I didn’t want him dead.”
Levi raised his eyebrows in surprise, then immediately relaxed. “Oh,” he groaned, “I was enjoying you treating me like a normal human being. Did the police reach out? Do you have the officer’s name?”
You shook your head, unable to say a word.
“Did anyone else speak to you about it?” he continued, throwing questions at you. You shook your head again.
“Then don’t worry, idiot,” he said almost tenderly. “Did you open my book?”
It took you a split second to shake your head again. He narrowed his eyes in warning. “I don’t like people lying to me.”
“I’m sorry,” you whispered.
“Tch, I’m surprised you lasted this long being so loyal,” he said, clearly disinterested. “Just keep your mouth shut. Not that anyone would believe you, but I don’t want to deal with it.”
“You’re... part of a mafia?”
For the first time, you saw him chuckle. “You’re kinda cute.” The compliment made you blush, even though it shouldn’t have. “I’m not part of a mafia; the mafia is mine. My family has served the royal family of Paradise for generations. The Ackerman genes have to be put to good use. I just make sure everything runs smoothly, and if it’s illegal, it’s done right.”
You frowned, feeling as though he was treating you like a naive child. “Well, excuse me. My ‘Welcome to Paradise’ guidebook from university didn’t include the organized crime tour.”
“How did you think an old man like him could afford this place, prime real estate downtown in one of the biggest cities in the world, and pay you so well?” You shrugged at his question; yes, it was suspicious, but you hadn’t cared.
Levi slid the book across the desk, the sound of the cover scraping against the wood filling the uncomfortable silence. “Don’t worry, that asshole had multiple complaints of sexual harassment at work. He’s doing the world a favor being fish food.”
He pulled out his wallet and paid as usual, but this time he left double the amount. “I don’t want to be paid. I don’t want to be involved,” you insisted.
Levi gave a subtle smile. “It’s for a new lipstick. Dior just launched one—my cousin has it. I bet it’d look good on you.”
As he crossed the door and the bell rang again, you called after him, “I don’t need Dior!”
Attracting the attention of the head of the Ackerman family wasn’t on your “semester bingo,” that’s for sure.
(I don't know what this is, it just came to me as I was at work)}

I've mentioned this in passing but like there's a genre of TTRPGs that I call the "fantasy adventure game" that is nebulously defined and that is ultimately what a lot of people look for when they look for TTRPGs. They're basically games in the same broad genre as D&D, characterized by the following:
Cooperative. Player characters are expected to form an adventuring party of some type that cooperates to overcome adversity.
Challenge-based. Ultimately the action in these games revolves around overcoming obstacles in the pursuit of some goal. These obstacles often include combat but can also be different types of adversity, such as environmental obstacles or other complex situations that must be maneuvered.
Fantasy. These games take place in fantasy settings, whatever that means. More often than not this means a medieval or early modern level of technology and aesthetics heavily informed by medieval Europe and classical antiquity.
Anyway I sometimes get asks from people who want to stay within the fantasy genre and roughly the same genre of play as D&D but who chafe at some of the expectations of D&D, so I'm compiling this list of games in order to give you a starting point. This list is not meant to be exhaustive and it will reflect my own biases when it comes to what games on the market I am aware of.
This first part will cover the Trad, or Traditional, side of the Fantasy Adventure Game genre. Trad is another nebulously defined term but ultimately what I mean by it is the sort of mainstream RPG design with a pedigree that goes all the way back to the seventies. Yes, even though games have changed a lot since 1974, I think there is a clear design lineage that can be traced from the early days of the hobby to most modern fantasy RPGs. I will keep games like Pathfinder and OSR games offa the list for now.
RuneQuest by Chaosium. The original RuneQuest was one of the first non-D&D fantasy RPGs that entered the hobby and it still remains around. Since its inception, RuneQuest has contrasted with D&D mostly in terms of its more modest character power scaling, more deadly combat, universal magic, and lack of classes and levels. Where D&D (every edition) is ultimately a game where characters will quickly grow to superheroic levels of power, RuneQuest characters are much more grounded, growing in skill and capability but always staying at a level of power where a single attack can end a would-be hero's adventuring career very quickly. RuneQuest is also heavily tied to the fantasy setting of Glorantha, a mythic bronze age fantasy setting with extremely intricate metaphysics and mythology. The current edition of RuneQuest is once again tied explicitly to Glorantha after years of the game having been detached from the Glorantha license, and in addition to adventuring in the world of Glorantha the game places a heavy emphasis on characters becoming characters of importance in the tribes and cults they belong to, and the game turns downtime between adventures into a major part of its gameplay.
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay by Cubicle 7. Unbeknownst to many, the first edition of Warhammer, the miniatures wargame, actually featured full rules of playing the game as a roleplaying game instead of an army scale wargame. These rules would later act as the foundation for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, now in its fourth edition. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, or WFRP for short, is characterized by being a more ground level look at the Old World of the Warhammer fantasy wargame, and it gives a much grimmer and grittier view of the world than sometimes portrayed in the miniatures game. WFRP is not a game of larger than life heroes going to battle against the forces of Chaos: it's a game about peasants, bandits, rat catchers, and apprentice wizards taking part in small-scale skirmishes that might sometimes involve the forces of Chaos but are ultimately just drops in the ocean compared to the great tsunami of Chaos rolling towards the world. Much like RuneQuest, it is characterized by a more grounded power level, with characters starting in ultimately mundane professions and not rising meteorically in power, but compared to RuneQuest its setting is much more grimy and gritty, and far from being universally available, magic is both rare and dangerous.
Rolemaster by Iron Crown Enterprises. Another classic fantasy RPG from the eighties, Rolemaster has experienced a recent resurgence, with many dubbing 2024 "the year of Rolemaster." Rolemaster was originally born out of the developers' frustrations in trying to run a D&D campaign set in Middle-earth and the game constantly struggling to produce fiction that would befit the late and great J.R.R. Tolkien's work. For some reason they decided to make Rolemaster. But to be serious for a moment, despite its failure to model the sort of action present in Tolkien's work, Rolemaster is on its own terms a crunchy and detailed fantasy RPG that is a good fit for those who chafe against the abstract nature of most other fantasy RPG systems. Rolemaster as a system is heavily characterized by the use of "open-ended" 1d100 rolls (rolls which explode both on high and low rolls), extremely gruesomely detailed critical hit, fumble, and spell failure tables, and gameplay that largely revolves around table lookup. It also has its own, very unique set of metaphysics that make it stand out from most fantasy RPGs.
Fantasy AGE by Green Ronin Publishing. Originally the system that powered their officially licensed Dragon Age RPG, the Fantasy AGE system is a 3d6-based system that while clearly owing heavily to D&D (in addition to obvious influences from the Dragon Age CRPG, the game is in many ways a successor to Green Ronin's earlier d20-based True20 system) aims for a more cinematic approach to play. A lot of what the game has to offer will be instantly familiar to D&D players: characters are defined via their species and class; while there are only four classes (Warrior, Rogue, Mage, and Envoy in the second edition), players get to further choose specializations for their character that will give them access to more unique abilities; characters advance in levels which unlock new abilities according to their class. Fantasy AGE tries to go for a more cinematic style, with each 3d6 roll having the possibility of producing a "stunt," where players get to spend stunt points on additional effects depending on the action in question. It thus promises to be a game where the situation is constantly changing and the action is exciting and high-flying.
Break!! by Madriñan & Tartaglia. The recent winner of the Gold Ennie Award for Best Family Game 2024, Break!! is a science fantasy adventure game firmly grounded in classic TTRPG design (with old-school D&D as one of the clearest of its many influences) but with inspirations taken from anime and classic video games. Break!! doesn't exactly bring a lot of new and exciting design to the table, but it comes with such fantastic presentation and clarity of purpose that it makes one excited at the sheer prospect of playing it. Like, just look at how nicely their website is presented! The game itself has similar presentation.
Warrior, Rogue & Mage by Stargazer Games. A rules light traditional fantasy RPG, WRM boils down character abilities to three abilities: Warrior, Rogue, and Mage. WRM is a very simple and easy to digest fantasy RPG that while far from crunchy still has a bit of bite to it. Character creation is simple and largely consist of assigning points to the three stats, choosing skills, buying equipment, and choosing spells (for characters with a Mage attribute of 1 or higher). The game is entirely free and there is a wealth of free supplements for it as well.
Next time I'll be talking about either the OSR, the "Alt" school of design, tactical combat games (basically, successors to 4e that warrant a separate look), 3e successors, or idk, who knows.

what does querying mean
Ah! OK. I forget that normal people don't know what this process entails.
So, if you want to be "trad" published (which basically means the kind of published that gets your book into bookstores) you will probably need a literary agent. Some small presses do not require that writers submit books for consideration through an agent, but pretty much every book you've ever heard of went through both a literary agent and a publisher that requires authors use them. So, how do you get a literary agent? You send a very specialized letter called a 'query letter', often with the first few pages of your novel, for them to read and decide if they want to 'represent' it, which means try to sell it for you in exchange for a 15% commission. The query letter I used for the 6th book I queried was this...
Dear [agent],
NO GOOD WITCHES is a 90,000-word YA speculative that will appeal to readers of A Deadly Education and Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. It’s a ‘girl goes evil and gets shit done while awe-stuck boy holds her purse so she can do the murders’ kind of book with popular tropes including found family, female friendship, dark academia, morally grey characters, power corrupts, and a romance where the boy is bad but the girl is worse (you could save him, I could make him worse; we are not the same).
Seventeen-year-old Calla watches the witch burnings on television along with everyone else in the United States. Witches can move things with their minds. They know what people are thinking. They’re terrifying, and dangerous, and the shows are a nationwide reminder that witches will not be tolerated. Her friends have never suspected Calla is one, and she needs to keep it that way. But when she answers a question before it’s asked in a history class, her future goes up in flames. She can read minds. She’s evil. Game over.
Caught and terrified, Calla is surprised when she isn’t dragged to a pyre, but to a hospital where she’s poked and prodded to find out how powerful she is. Turns out, good witches—compliant witches—don’t get sent to the stake. They get trained in hidden schools and sharpened into weapons. Their ability to manipulate matter powers the electrical plants and their mindreading gets used by the diplomatic corp. Calla doesn’t feel like getting burned alive, so she learns everything she can.
Including how she—and her new witch friends—can burn the system down rather than let powerful men exploit their magic.
By the time she’s done, there won’t be a single good witch left.
I was mentored in both the Pitch Wars and Author Mentor Match programs, and I was previously represented but my agent and I have amicably parted ways and this manuscript has never been on submission. I live in Connecticut with cats, my family, and some unhappy plants. I am not a witch.
Thank you,
Collie
I sent 69 versions of this query out, 2 of which were referrals (meaning a current client of the agent recommended me)
17 times the agent ghosted my query.
43 times the agent rejected at the query stage
7 times the agent requested more materials. (This is about a 10% request rate and is not great but not terrible either.)
2 times the agent ghosted the requested materials
3 times the agent rejected the additional materials
Once the agent offered me what's called a "revise and resubmit" where she sent some detailed edits I could do and then she would reconsider whether she wanted to rep it. I disagreed pretty strenuously with one of her suggestions (she wanted me to cut the romance) and so I didn't pursue it.
The whole process is tedious and unfun and pretty much necessary if you want your book to be in, say, Barnes and Noble. I do not enjoy it. I am going to do it for the seventh time starting this fall. Maybe I'll do a 'querying diary' the way I do a log of what I've written. That would be fun.
Ask me anything about querying. I am a bona fide expert on this.

Y/n’s POV
“So, as you all know, you’ve been called here for an emergency team meeting. You’re probably not expecting to see the other team here too,” Coach Beck chuckles, but her smile doesn’t meet her eyes.
The entire University Figure Skating team is gathered in our rink for a supposed “emergency meeting”. I knew something was up as soon as I sat down on the bleachers and saw the University Ice Hockey team already waiting for us. Coach Beck is our figure skating coach, and she’s great. Beck is kind, smart, funny, and strict, but she makes practices fun. She’s so encouraging during our competitions against other universities, that even if we don’t win, she’s still proud of us. Not to make it seem like I don’t win. Of course, I win every competition I’m in. Figure skating is my passion, it always has been. I wanted to go pro after I graduate, but I doubt that will happen. That’s why I work my ass off to get straight As and put hundreds of hospital volunteer hours in each semester– I’m pre-med. If I can’t become a famous skater, I might as well get a job in a field I’m good at.
Next to Coach Beck stands Coach Carter. He is the University Ice Hockey team’s coach. From what I’ve seen, he’s way more serious and scary than Beck. In the few times the men have had to use our rink for practice, he’s always screaming. He crosses his arms and glares down his nose at each and every one of us.
“Well, Coach Carter and I wanted to let both teams know that the Men’s Ice Hockey rink is being rented out to the local community this semester for K-12 hockey lessons and practices. That being said…”
“You’re going to be sharing the rink this season,” Coach Carter finishes.
A few of my teammates gasp, and I hear some of the men on the ice hockey side of the bleachers groan. I raise my hand patiently, waiting for Beck to see me.
“Yes, Y/n,” she points at me.
“Yes, hi. Um, so how will we be doing this? Because I know I’m not the only person thinking it, but the men need the entire rink to practice scoring and stuff, right? So where will we be?”
“Always worrying about yourself, huh, Y/n/LN?” I snap my head around and shoot Chris a deadly glare, which only makes him laugh under his breath.
Chris Sturniolo. He’s been my biggest rival since we were freshmen, and both brand new to college level athletics. Now he’s the king of the hockey team and the president of the Alpha Delta Phi chapter at our university. Everyone on campus knows him, either for being the guy who led the hockey team to victory in the U.S. Collegiate Championship three years in a row, or the guy who throws the best parties out of all the frats and sororities at our school combined. Everyone loves him, but not me. I know him as the guy who’s had it out for me since day one. He’s pre-med too. I don’t know how, to be quite honest. He’s a chronic lecture-skipper, and has shown up to Saturday practices hungover so many times it’s hard to keep track. Not that I’m keeping tabs on him, he makes it known. He’s always bragging about how great his parties are and how wasted he got. He’s been trying to get me to come to one of his parties since sophomore year, when I let it slip that I’d never been drunk. We’ve had so many classes together since freshman year, and we’re always on opposite ends of class debates. Sometimes I think he does it on purpose, just to piss me off. Despite all his bad behavior outside the classroom, he still manages to maintain a decent GPA, he has to. It’s a requirement to be involved in athletics. All athletes must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher to participate in their sport. That’s another reason he makes me angry, he barely tries, and still manages to get good grades, and the professors like him. He’s so charming and smooth-talking he can win over even the strictest of professors. It’s infuriating.
But the most infuriating thing about him is how attractive he is. He has shaggy brown hair and blue eyes. His limbs are long and slender, yet toned. But not too buff. And he’s tall, well, taller than me. He has good style and he’s confident, which makes him even hotter. It’s so hard to hate him when he constantly looks like that. I mean, I guess I don’t hate him. He’s just my rival, and I don’t like that– having a rival, I mean. I like to be the best all the time. In academics, in my sport, even in my hobbies (thankfully, I don’t think Chris has an interest in crocheting, so we won’t be rivals in that field any time soon). Chris likes to be the best too, and that’s why we don’t get along.
Now, our senior season is just about to start. Chris and I are both captains of our respective sports teams, we’re both captains in the Model UN (often leading to some very heated debates that leave the other club members silent), and we’re in the same senior seminar for our Biology major. On top of all that, we’re now expected to share a rink? I call bullshit.
Coach Carter speaks up before Coach Beck can respond to my question, “We’re just going to divide the rink in half and practice in a smaller space. We’re trying to be as fair as possible here. We’re also going to get the full rink on Saturday mornings, and the figure skating team will no longer have Saturday practice.”
“What?!” I shout, “How is that fair?! Coach Beck, we need Saturday!” This earns another smartass laugh from Chris and I scowl at him again.
“Clearly she agreed to it, Y/n. I’m sure you can book extra individual hours after we’re done practicing. We all know you love to work overtime,” Chris says with an eye roll, and a few of his teammates snicker.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” I ask, and Chris just shrugs in my direction with a grin. God, he is insufferable.
“Okayyy,” Coach Beck says in an attempt to diffuse the obvious tension between me and Chris, “Y/n, unfortunately, this is just the way it has to be.”
“But it’s not fair. This is a lot of our senior seasons. I’m sure all of us seniors want this season to be our best.”
“We can miss out on Saturday practice this year, and share the rink, and still have the best season of your four years,” Coach Beck says. She’s trying to be encouraging, but I can tell she’s a little pissed off too.
“Life isn’t fair sweetheart,” Coach Carter adds. I blush in embarrassment and lower my gaze.
–
Later that night, after our first shared practice, I’m collecting my things to make the trek back to my apartment when I see Chris approaching next to me.
He taps me on the shoulder and I turn to face him. “Hey,” he says.
“Hi?”
“I just came to see how you were feeling. You know, now that we’re gonna see each other multiple times a day, almost every day. Class, Model UN, and now sharing the rink with me? You must be thrilled!” He quips, and I just want to wipe that smug grin off his face.
“Yup. I’m ecstatic!” I say, rolling my eyes. “Just more time to show everyone how easily I can wipe the floor with you.”
“Wipe the floor with me?” he asks, “How will you be able to do that here? We’re on different teams. Maybe seeing me in action will finally show you that I’m just as talented as you are.”
I stay quiet, not really knowing how to respond. He’s right, but there’s no way in hell I’m about to admit it to him. It doesn’t matter that I don’t say anything though, because he sees right through me. He always has.
“Aw, Y/n,” he smiles, “Life isn’t fair, remember?” He slowly backs up, giving me a two-finger salute before walking away. When I turn back around, I’m alone in the rink.

Reading How to Behave Badly in Elizabethan England by Ruth Goodman and had a thought.
I know everybody likes to picture Hob with a long sword, which I don't blame anyone for thinking. It's very sexy. However, like others have pointed out, before 1589 Hob was a poor foot solider who casually robbed people on the road. He likely wouldn't have had access to proper training until he became a Sir.
Now, the obvious solution for this is a long bow. Again, very sexy and during the Tudor era at least every able bodied man was expected to train with one before firearms came on the scene. Hob undoubtedly learned the bow before he ever learned how to use a sword. It was an acceptable form of exercise for years. I'd even say it's safe to assume he's proficient in it, and likely the weapon he was assigned to use as a solider. However, during his time in between wars, I think we're all missing the most obvious tool; the staff.
Staffs were cheap, easily available and in the right hands extremely deadly. Not to mention the favored weapon of highway men or rather a footpad (which is a highway man who didn't have a horse). Hob strikes me as the type to get up close an personal, rather than attack at a distance.
Just imagine Professor Gadling walking into class to give a demonstration of how to properly use a staff. It requires a mixture of strength and dexterity as to not leave yourself open to attack. It can be used simply to injure, but with enough force scatter a man's brains on the pavement. Just think of him getting somebody else to come at him with a sword and demonstrate how someone could disarm them with nothing more than a length of wood.
Underrated, that's all I'm saying.
Edit: Also it should be noted that while he was likely eventually trained in the sword, more likely it would have been a rapier/dagger combo as was favored in England at that time. Again, long swords are hot, but rapiers are sexy.
