Deadlock, Valve's new game is finally out in the wild - what is it, how does it play, what's the lore like and why should you care? Here's all about it and my impressions from playing for the last few months!

COMIN OUT OF MY CAGE TO ACTUALLY POST ART. Cause Pocket is baby and I love them. There isn't enough art of them and I'm doing my part, dammit!

Looking up anything about deadlock is a 50/50 between the most genuinely enjoyable looking gameplay and funny banter imaginable, and wading through "bro this is like if overwatch sucked" comments.

Deadlock is cool but I wish you didn't have to aim good to play it.
I'm still waiting for a third or first person multiplayer shooter where aiming is at borderline Metroid Prime levels of handholding, putting strategy and positioning at top priority. This may sound like the dumbest wish ever but there must be other broken people who like 99% of the hero shooter jam yet weren't forged in the fires of Quake or Qounter Strike.
It's an untapped market I'm telling you, any AAAA game producers reading this I'm telling you: You could make hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars by throwing your esports dreams away and just making a fun shooter with baby mode aiming.

So, about the new Valve game we're not allowed to record...
I noticed I'd received a surprise invite to a beta test a couple days ago. It turned out to be Deadlock, a game I'd vaguely heard of, but was finding myself interested in just because it's a new game from Valve and it reminded me of many games I'd enjoyed in the past. I spent a couple of hours playing as soon as I could download it, and you know, the game feels like a love letter to my all-time favorite MOBA/hero shooter, Super Monday Night Combat. Along with easily recognizable elements of a vast array of other games in those genres, from SMITE to Overwatch to Gigantic.
...So, it's the first Valve game I've ever tried that feels derivative. Yes, it's derivative of a bunch of games I freaking loved, but what we expect from Valve are games that feel like nothing we've ever seen before, not like a collection of things we've seen plenty of times. It's good and fun, but I can't imagine that this will have the impact of anything we got from the Orange Box.
Also, there's the fact that MOBA+Hero Shooter is a game idea that has always crashed and burned. I'll never forget what a friend I got into SMNC said after he dropped it despite being completely addicted for weeks: "There's no way I could ever play this enough to be good at it." Shooters and MOBAs are two of the most brutal genres, and combining the two makes for one of the most punishing game concepts possible. Most people don't have much fun doing badly at a game, with myself in SMNC being an exception. However, Valve was the first dev studio to realize that bad players need some way to compete with good players, or they won't stick around long enough to become good players. How they're going to apply that principle to Deadlock is a mystery to me, but they're the pros.

Deadlock🥶
Firstly I feel like she’s a strawberry girl and would die if you gave her something small and simple such as strawberry milk.
Strawberry themed desserts incoming.
Because of the PTSD she received before joining the protocol she gets lots of nightmares. So when she turns up at your room in the small hours of the night you welcome her in and light up a small candle and hold her against your chest humming lightly until she drifts off again.
Um coffee shop and library dates? Yes! I feel like she absolutely loves the serenity when she reads and now loves it now more than ever. You both get take out coffees and homemade pastries and curl up together in a cozy space whilst you both read or enjoy another activity quietly.
She would show you lots of photographs of the beautiful landscapes from where she grew up in Norway. Her eyes sparkle as she speaks about each one.
On your off days she would surprise you and take you to Norway to actually see the landscapes. You were in awe. She also planned a secret picnic too with some of her favourite traditional foods too.
Pet names: “kjære” meaning sweetheart, darling and love), also I’m English “my love” and “darling”
Yippee first request done! My inbox is still open and I’ve only got one more to work on so I’ve got space for more requests! Enjoy <3

Design circular logo
Design 3D comic book stylized human posterchild character
Design Avengers-like poster of the major characters
Name it something memorable, but weird, like 'Overwatch', 'Valorant' or 'Concord'
Voila, you have a modern hero shooter's art style!
I like this art style, but PLEASE stop copy-pasting!

sdomthing deadlock does a much better job of than overwatch is actually balancing its cc against ttk like a moba instead of having regular shooter health pools and damagew thresholds but also having a guy who can stun you for two seconds

While the bot banwave is all well and good, do not forget that this happened after we endured 5 years of nothing but lootboxes with community-made cosmetics and maps and a boatload of cheaters and bots. Valve profited off of the community both in labor and purchases while they left the game to rot. The banwave is GOOD; we can finally enjoy playing the game without having to deal with aimbotting, mic and text chat spam and we don't have to risk our private information either.
But this is the bare minimum and this wasn't the case for five years. FIVE YEARS.
Valve is LATE; this should NOT have taken five years nor should the playerbase have had to force Valve's hand through protesting. And we didn't protest once, we did it TWICE. There is still no line of communication with Valve either, there are still no official statements, nothing.
It frustrates me because why did it take 5 years? Why did we have to scream at Valve TWICE? Why did we have to give them bad publicity to give them a reason to move? Why did we have to consider a boycott for one of the few things that still gets new content added to the game and gives community creators revenue for their hard work?
We can celebrate this change. The game is playable again. This is what we wanted.
But do NOT get complacent; Valve have every reason to do this as a publicity stunt. Between their new multiplayer PvP game Deadlock coming out, both TF2's AND CS2's extensive bot/cheater problem and Artifact (a Dota 2 based card game AND their last big flop), their reputation and profits are at stake. They have garnered a reputation for harboring cheaters in their multiplayer games, and if they didn't fix that before releasing Deadlock, this new game would automatically flop. Not to mention the very concept of Deadlock is rather unpromising in itself (MOBA 6v6 3rd person Hero Shooter... Okay.)
What I'm saying is these recent news of the ban waves and the confirmation that yes, the TF2 comic is going to be released eventually (no actual date or even year has been confirmed, mind you), it's easy to forget why we were so frustrated to begin with. This happened last time, and Valve saw it fit to start slacking again.
Do not forget. Do not let up until we know Valve isn't just trying to make us settle down to earn more money. We were promised a functional game, and it needs to remain functional.

Did anybody else get an invite to test Deadlock (Valve's new in-development hero shooter)? Is it random?

Deadlock rules because I should always be able to look at the most annoying player in a lobby and go "you're a bunny now". This is the sort of CC hero shooters need.
