i was thinking about it, and i think that the reason Eddie works so well as a character despite (in the beginning especially) having the potential to be a VERY unlikeable, grating character, is that she’s pretty quickly shown to be genuinely smart and competent.
Like I’m someone who generally hates characters that fill the tropes she does, but when I was watching the show for the first time I remember that while I was frustrated by her I still cared about her. Like during the shack scene I was legit on edge bc I was scared she’d get hurt.
Like it would’ve been so easy to just make her an idiot, but they didn’t and by establishing that she’s smart within her first few minutes on screen (specifically her talk with James) completely saves her character from becoming unlikable imo, even when she’s acting like a dick.

If Deadloch gets a second season what do you hope will happen in it?
I'd really like to see the Bushy murder investigation! I imagine it being something of a reversal of the first season - first season was focused on Dulcie's life and featured a big-city detective in a small town, second season would focus on Eddie's life and feature a small-town detective in a big city.
I also think it would focus more on corruption and incompetence in the police - I can't remember if it was actually implied that Bushy was shot by a fellow cop or if that was just a theory I had but I stand by it. So I think it would be interesting to see the investigation turn inwards, and that would keep the first season's murder-mystery "everyone is a suspect" vibe while being different enough to not just be a rehash.

I know Dulcie’s having a terrible time throughout, but episode 6 of Deadloch might be my favourite
“Well, I would say to them, Jeremy, that the killer is only targeting cis-het white men, and our market research shows that that's a far cry from our Feastival patron demographic. In fact, given that the victim demographic is usually responsible for the perpetration of violence, Deadloch may well be the safest place to be right now for many members of our Feastival community.”
“Imagine if you'd arrested Skye! I'd have divorced you on the spot.” (Promise?)
“And I know this because my wife told me because I am blended into this situation like an onion in a soup.”
“Who is taking notes? This is just numbers!”
“Ma'ams, sorry I'm late. I got poisoned.”
“It [the voice-to-text software] doesn't understand our accents.”
“Killer dyke! Not you; your mum!”
“Why does Margaret Carruthers get to decide who deserves what?” :(
“Ever since Trent got murdered, you and your mum have been creeping around like you're the fucking Hamburglar twins.”
“I’m pregnant and I can't be committed to this relationship if you're a serial killer.”
That shot of Margaret Carruthers in front of the antlers doubling as devil horns. That's the stuff, baby!!!
THE FIGHT
Cath blithely missing that Dulcie had been miserable for five years :(
“Maybe you'd have remembered the date better, Dulcie, if you were at home babysitting Tom with me that weekend instead of FUCKING SOME OTHER WOMAN IN A WORK SHOWER.”
“Right now, my job's more important than us, Cath. It's more important than you.” OOH.
Bobbing bodies at the Cinema Aquatica, or Floating Flicks. They’re both good names!

I love your work, and I love how many new shows and movies I've discovered through it! Apologies if you've already been drenched in recs for this, but I wanted to throw Deadloch out there as something you might enjoy. It's a recent eight-episode Australian mystery-comedy with too many queer characters to count, including the protagonist, and a wonderful gay, bi, and trans cast and creative team.
I'd never heard of Deadloch??? But I'm SO in???????? Thank you so much for telling me about it! There may not be a reaction, but there will at least be a liveblog here on Tumblr.

I already sort of made a post about this I think but I noticed that despite being miserable in deadloch, Dulcie has a stronger tie with the community than any of her friends/family who claim to love Deadloch. Like, Tammy and Miranda know her enough to call her by her nickname get texts from her and know about her personal life, Sharelle is familiar enough to feel comfortable prodding her about if she thinks Eddie pissed herself, I can’t say Vanessa *likes* her but they have a relationship and Dulcie is from the beginning looking out for her, etc
idk i mean I think her job helps with that, sort of forces her to be interacting with everyone; but like. She doesnt have to know them, she Knows them because she cares about them and she cares about the town and the people in it even if shes unhappy there, which is a really sweet quality.
Also on a more sad note, is probably what got her suspended/fired by Hastings, because she wasnt willing to sit by and allow his shit. and Also hes a raging homophobe misogynist.

My media this week (1-7 Oct 2023)
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🙂 Under Alien Skies: A Sightseer's Guide to the Universe (Phil Plait, author & narrator) - The Bad Astronomer paints pictures of what the sky would look like standing on the surface of other planets, asteroids, etc.
😊 Initiation (Sex Wizards #1) (Alethea Faust) - erotic BDSM fantasy - actually a bit more plot & worldbuilding than I was expecting tbh, entertaining
😞 Miss Aldridge Regrets (Canary Club Mystery #1) (Louise Hare, author; Georgina Campbell, narrator) - This isn't a mystery the MC investigates, it's a mystery that happens TO her. She was tediously passive, seeming really rather naïve & foolish (esp given her age and life experience) and entirely in denial about pretty much everything that happens to her (since she's being actively framed for murder). However, the very short interval chapters from the killer's perspective did hook my interest and left me genuinely curious about the mystery. At about 44% I jumped to the end to see how the mystery resolved. I'm counting it as read since I did read over 50% of it.
😍 A Most Agreeable Murder (Julia Seales, author; Fiona Hampton, narrator) - comical pastiche/parody mashup of: Jane Austen (specifically), regency-set/gothic novels (in general) & Agatha Christie/country house mysteries - funny & entertaining, deftly done. Very Nightmare Abbey vibes in the absolute best way. I enjoyed all the caricature characters but 'overlooked tedious (but secretly a [redacted]) sister' Mary was my fave, absolute gothic queen
💖💖 +94K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
I'm dating the least inquisitive man in Ottawa (GlitterCity) - Rachel Reid's Game Changers: Troy Barrett/Harris Drover (but really mostly gen), 4K - cute, really nailed the character voices
Tinder Is the Night (rohkeutta) - MCU: stucky, 6K - hilarious, forever fave [reread]
Stay (fandomfluffandfuck) - MCU: stucky, 31K - silver fox/old guard Dom Steve subbing for newbie Dom Bucky - great character voices, hot af sex!
bitten hand guides best (frankoceansmoonriver) - The Witcher: Geraskier, 33K - lovely little fic with werewolf!Jaskier & witcher Geralt
