To have failed in killing Shinichi Kudo . . . he's made a huge oversight.

My video for SLICE (Short Little Iron Chef Edits), at BentoVid! The goal was to create at least a 90-second AMV within 100 hours, using a song from a list of songs only revealed at the start of the challenge. Given my slow editing, I can't believe I did it, but I did!

Right! It was so loop-de-loop GKAKVKA idk how else to explain but that’s how it felt- first there was the situation, which made sense if Araide disappeared ig, but he didn’t and that was great! I thought we’d get to see more of him- he’s a doctor so that’s a fairly easy to put in character … I remember seeing him in ova 9 and then after that?? The last words he said, non canon even, was smt like praising Ran’s cooking or smt GKAKVKA it’s so - TT sir? Pls come back!

Absolutely! Ngl I liked Araide. I like the sweet, soft type and he was def that! I would’ve loved to see more of him ;; if he could’ve met Eisuke I would’ve been so happy! I bet they rly would’ve gotten along TT both made jokes and little laughs ~ wholesome viewing! I can imagine it easily~ perhaps the harder bit would be where to put Conan focus..? They could easily enough just meet at the hospital,, Kogoro broke his foot while running to a Yoko concert 2.0 or smt - buut Ran is kind enough to probably come with Eisuke to hospital is also an option to save Poor Kogoro from further injury haha

True qq poor Eisuke… and he was treated so horribly in canon … like ?? What’s with that?? He’s such a sweet guy yet?? He can’t be happy? Similar treatment to some fans with Ran imho,,, being cruel just bc (in this case Ran) is kind and ,, idk,, human. I remember ppl complaining bc she cried and stuff… idk, I like everyone tbh gkakvka sure some chars I feel more indifferent to but,, I’d never hate>< dcmk chars literally so good! Like an iceberg, some have immense potential but so many other icebergs around them it’s difficult to explore it TT

Having a moment where I am simply unable to process how exactly Shinichi actually 100% looks like an older Conan rather than Shinichi in OVA 9.  There’s this weird off feeling in the pit of my stomach as I rewatch it, like I deadass feel like a deer in someone’s crosshairs or something-- is that even the sentiment I’m trying to describe here?  Like how is that even possible??  They’re the same person and we’ve known they’re the same person since the dawn of time, and we’ve even been reminded/shown on multiple occasions that they’re just that: the same.  Have I tricked myself with my own headcanons into believing they’re actually two different people and now I’m just bamboozling myself vis-a-vis confirmation bias???  Or is there really a difference to how they depicted him throughout the OVA depending on whether or not we’re supposed to perceive Conan or Shinichi????

I watched OVA 9 and it did indeed have great vibes. The only thing was I kinda wished the older designs were better, especially for the Detective Boys, the just look the same as little kids but now Long. Expect more redesigns soon

Trope Tuesday

My trope this week was “All Just a Dream”! For your enjoyment, a somewhat shorter DCMK piece. OVA 9 is involved. Standard OVA 9 warnings apply.

After that day, he finds it difficult to sleep.

Sometimes he’s able to slip into a light, uneasy doze for a few hours. Those days are blessings. He actually gets rest then. But most of the time, his eyes drift shut and he’s immediately locked in the jaws of the same hellish nightmare, stuck as Conan a decade from now, forced to watch his old friends move on from a detective who never returned, forced to watch Ran wait for him and wait for him and know that she’s doomed to wait forever because he’s too selfish to let her forget, let her heal from his mistakes, and –

That’s usually where he’s able to drag himself awake. It’s a damned good thing Kogoro’s such a heavy sleeper, else Conan’s harsh gasps and muffled cries would’ve set off alarm bells ages ago. As is, the guy sleep on, unaware of how his freeloading charge spends the rest of the night reading the news on his phone to keep himself from falling back to hell sleep.

He acts like nothing’s wrong, and for the most part he’s able to get away with it. Ran only asks questions when she catches him nodding off into his curry, and he deflects those easily enough. The Detective Boys ask if he stays up all night playing video games and leave it at that. Hattori remarks on how tired he sounds over the phone, but he’s easily distracted. Haibara…well, Haibara probably knows, but she has her own demons to grapple with.

It’s easy to fool everyone. Too easy. Too easy by far. This is his existence now, a shadow of his former self, living only by feeding lies to those who trust him. He lies through his teeth, pretends, wears mask after mask until he reaches up to pull them off and realizes that they’ve been fused to his face, he can’t take them off, his glasses, they’re stuck, they’re –

He jolts awake and reads articles on traffic accidents in Hokkaido until dawn.

He loses weight. There are noticeable bags under his eyes. He applies makeup and slouches to avoid detection.

His appetite starts fading. He hides his leftovers or gives them to Genta.

And he’s tired, so damned tired, but the only cure for that is sleep and he’s not getting any even if he wants it. He can’t shatter the shackles of that imaginary future, because it’s a future that could very well become reality. He’s not much closer to uncovering the Black Organization. Haibara’s progress on an antidote is sluggish. Time keeps passing, Ran keeps waiting, and he’s going to go mad if this goes on. He can’t take the thought of keeping her chained to him while he’s forced to live a second childhood. He can’t – he can’t –

His eyes snap open.

By dawn, he has a letter in his hands, sealed tightly in a nondescript envelope. He hides it behind the bookshelf in the office and prays he never has to uncover it.

Two years later, Ran Mouri receives a dusty letter in the mail from one Shinichi Kudou.

Kogoro finds her in her room bawling.

In Kogoro’s room, Conan curls up into a ball with his hands over his ears to muffle the sound of two hearts breaking in two.

My part of the DCMK Fanworks Server Halfiversary Exchange 2023! For @blenderfullasarcasm!

I decided to follow the Yu-Gi-Oh! and DCMK crossover prompt, which specifically highlighted "Season 0," the colloquial name for the first anime adaptation of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. So, I paired Detective Conan (and the eensy-littlest bit of Magic Kaito) footage with that anime's theme song, "A Yell of Thirst" by Field of View.

For as long as I've known about it, I've had my own soft spot for the Season 0 series. The portrayal of Yami Yugi as this frightening, malicious personality who emerges only in times of danger gripped me—and still does. Revisiting the series for this project, I could still so strongly recall scenes of Yugi and his friends grappling with his mysterious "other self."

And I also realized that maybe Detective Conan and Yu-Gi-Oh! are more similar than I previously thought. After all, couldn't "Sleeping Kogoro" also be described as a frightening, malicious personality who emerges only in times of danger?

(Or, more in line with the actual video I edited, Conan is "another Shinichi" who both terrifies and helps him, a dynamic perhaps not so unlike that of Yugi and Yami Yugi in Season 0.)

I hope you enjoy what I came up with! My goal was to utilize clips featuring every character and relationship noted in the prompts, and though an AMV can't exactly be a casefic or delve into worldbuilding per se, I also tried to capture the spirit of those prompts, too, including more actual detective-ing and backgrounds than I ever have in my Conan AMVs before. Huge shout out goes to @dcmk-scenery, an absolutely fantastic resource who were a tremendous help, as well as the Detective Conan World wiki, which definitely led me to clips from episodes I haven't even seen yet! The English translation of the lyrics are also courtesy of the Yu-Gi-Oh! wiki.

As a final note, though I know the requirement for the exchange was a 15-second AMV, I really wanted to make my gift special; Blender is so kind and does so much for the DCMK community, including setting up this event in the first place! I'm so glad I was able to to be a part of this, and I hope my final result brings joy.
