We need to free the Weasel
A brief discussion about the way that Creature Commandos uses politics in its narratives.
Spoilers for it and everything else James Gun DC up to this point though, below the cut.
Also, it is a busy post, content warnings for discussions of white supremacists and cops, as it is necessary.
With the release of the trailer of James Gunn's Superman film, hype for his grand DC Universe has kicked into high gear, and for good reason. That trailer, no matter the quality of the final film, is a goddamn work of art. A piece of film that understands Superman better over the course of 2 minutes and 20 seconds than Zack Snyder did over the course of 3 overlong movies. That mixed with his solid back catalogue of Superhero films. However, slightly more obscurely, this universe has already started with the animated series Creature Commandos, and especially with the fourth episode, which released hours before Superman's trailer, shows the kind of skill and thought Gunn and co. are putting into this new universe.
At its front, Creature Commandos feels very... blunt, in a lot of ways. It's like The Suicide Squad but with Creatures! It's big and raunchy, being an animated series with blood and swearing and sex and whatnot. And, when it comes with its politics, some of the early villain's mooks are a bunch of weird incels, and one of the main characters constantly advocates for killing Nazis. It is a work that immediately shows its hand, making the type who would decry the wokeness of modern movies and games or whatever. However, with these early examples, it can feel like a bit too much, maybe. I love it, don't get me wrong, I'm the type to really enjoy blunt earnestness. Though, given the more comedic approach that many of these elements take in the early episodes, it can feel a bit like it's only there for the bit.
Where the series really starts to excel, though, is when it starts integrating its flashback segments. As a whole, even outside the point of this post, the flashbacks feel like a wonderful decision. A way of fleshing out our characters while giving each episode a distinct feel, justifying the series as, well, a series rather than just one long movie. However, here, I want to discuss some of its political ideas, and how they integrate. Because, for these, they integrate more thematically, being an undertone to each character's own story.
For the bride, her story is centered around this idea of the objectification of women. I mean, it makes sense. She was literally made to simply be the bride of Frankenstein, an object of his affection. However, as she gained her own independence, the masculine figure who feels he is owed her hand in marriage breaks out into a rage, harming her and the person she actually loves. This story is what gives her the cynical edge she gains in the series proper, giving her an interesting, sympathetic story while using the elements of said story to say something about how many men perceive woman. A strong enough parable that acts as an undercurrent for her character.
Then, we get to G.I. Robot's episode, a real tear-jerker of a thing about a silly robot character, the exact thing to set my brain off in all sorts of ways. Much of this story is designed to set up his tragic past, so that we can feel catharsis once he gets his big moment, then feel the tragedy when he gets brutally murdered. However, it again is saying a lot of complex things. Many have discussed the PTSD angle for GI, which I do see, however, in GI's story specifically, I see the way that the American state treats veterans. Like, think about it. This being who was forged and created for the purpose of making war, goes to war, then once the war is over, they are, best, used for spectacle on live TV (Where they are unable to properly adjust to the tone of peacetime, accusing the audience of being Nazis themselves), studied not to help them, but to make the next generation of soldiers even more efficient at their goal of warcraft, then thrown to the side when they are no longer useful. The man selling GI to the collector literally says he slipped through the cracks. It, again, is a wonderful metaphor that takes advantage of what GI is, and uses it to emphasize these issues in a more literal way. It is a lot easier to show a robot who was programmed in a specific way weird the room out than the rocky adjustments a veteran may have to go through. It then, also, shows the kinds of people who really benefit from this warcraft, those it appeals to. The collector who buys GI turns out to be a part of a White Supremacist group in America, a group of people who gladly use Nazi iconography, identify with it, and gladly push it. Those also happen to be the types who want to buy old war memorabilia. Obviously, not all war collectors are Nazis. But these are people who see this kind of might makes right ideology that America so often employs with its military, and latch onto it. GI, rightfully, finds this appaling, and kills them on sight. It is this wonderful moment from this delightfully twisted series.
However, even that could be seen as a tad blunt. Again, GI is very clear with his words, he doesn't hide much. So, where I see this series going from good to great is with Weasel's flashback segments. This begins when a lawyer, a member of a nonprofit, demands she see Weasel, as she is putting on a case for him. In essence, she states that, at least to her and her organization, he was unjustly prosecuted. To both Rick Flag and us, this seems absurd, as we have a lot of predisposed biases towards Weasel. You see, he is one of the few pre-existing characters in this cast. Weasel was previously seen in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, though only briefly. There, as a member of the Decoy Team, he makes weird, gross noises, they make a joke about him having killed 27 kids, then have him promptly drown before the mission even starts (Though, in the post credit, it turns out he survived, because that's even funnier). Even if you hadn't seen that film (Which you should if you haven't), they reestablish all that in this series in the first few episodes, portraying him as a stupid, vulgar, violent creature who isn't worthy of rights. However, expertly, this is all a front.
In the flashbacks, we learn that Weasel only interacted with about 8 kids, a bunch of students left at an after school program. Contrary to what we had been told, he really just played around with the kids, chasing around a ball. They eventually get inside the school and, while messing with stuff they shouldn't have, start a small fire. However, some antics are afoot. While he is playing around, an old senile man sees this and, rather than asking about what's going on, decides to run back to his home, call the cops about what is a clear, if odd, misunderstanding, then grab his gun to try to take things into his own hands. And, as he does, shakily trying to shoot Weasel, he makes the problem of the small fire worse, shooting a gas canister behind them, turning the small fire into a school-destroying explosion and fire. Then, the cops show up. Many of the kids are already dead, seemingly, but one survived. So, as he pulls her out of the wreckage, what do the cops do? They start shooting. Throughout this whole sequence, the cops do nothing but shoot and get in the way of things. It all culminates in the final shots, where Weasel has dropped the kid after being shot. And, instead of either of them going to get the kid, they both pin Weasel down, try to pull him out. This leaves the young girl to be crushed.
This is a massive tragedy, a game of tragic misudnerstandings that gets kids killed. However, again, it does this by hiding its politics into a genuinely moving character based story to make them more effective. It is a story, in part, about our predisposed biases. I mean, the narrative literally sets this up. Characters around Weasel say things about him without him being able to have a say. Because he's a Weasel. Then, our characters make judgments based on what they believe and what they've heard from secondhand sources over what they actually see. Even when Weasel is his most violent (taking down Circe in episode 3), he does it to protect his teammates, and he doesn't actually kill her. In his backstory, characters make rash decisions based on their misinformed judgments in hopes of "protecting the kids," when all they are actually doing is harming them. They get 8 kids killed all because Weasel is a little freaky.
Then there's the cops themselves. It so masterfully uses showing rather than telling. The most it tells us is of the trail at the start, and again, this is moreso used as setup, playing into our dispositions. However, when it is time to actually depict the injustices, it shuts the fuck up. It doesn't just say that cops are bad with a couple of clear shitheads and moves on. It shows how cops are bad. Their only answer to this situation is violence. They don't actually serve their community, in this instance the children stuck in the fire, their only answer is to start shooting things. Because they have no other answer than state sanctioned violence. And they did this all with an episode about FUCKING WEASEL!
Now, imagine what they can do with Superman. It doesn't even have to be political, like these previous examples. However, to me, this shows that he can do what, to me, some of the best storytellers do. They weave every element of their story together with deliberate choices that strengthen each other. If anything, more than any well edited trailer, it is that that excites me about everything James is working on. Of course, he is doing this with a team, but James is the type to surround himself with smart people who understand these things inside and out. That one David Corenswet quote about the shorts proves that to me in shades. That's what gives me hope about these works. That they will be movies and shows that mean things. Which seems like a low bar, but hey, so many fail at it that it's kind of impressive.
#creature commandos#weasel#spoilers#sorry this gets a bit heavy#Given the nature of the analysis it covers a lot#this is what I wanted out of the trailer by the way#I was like âOh no they're gonna make me care about WEASEL!â#and they did.

Pretty consistently there are posts about how Tim should have a new identity but the problem is DC has tried before and it just doesnât stick. Tim doesnât *want* a new identity, heâs only interested in working with Bruce. Itâs built into his character. He was designed to be the perfect Robin to Bruceâs Batman. That could morph into its own thing maybe down the line, but tbh Damian has a better shot at having a new identity of his own. Itâs established he works well with Dick and I quite like the solution tumblr had for this years ago where he became Rook, Nightwingâs sidekick. If you dig hard you might even find the old art if it wasnât an accidental casualty of 2018âs insane bots.
If Tim does get a new identity it will probably need to be more subdued than a lot of the brighter birds Iâve seen thrown around, as heâs pretty much confirmed to be a âbatâ personality wise. Obvs more well adjusted than modern versions of Bruce but my point is he would need to blend in with Gotham better. Raven, Crow, something darker if the bird motif sticks. I do like the gray ghost thing Iâve seen but he would seriously stick out, and I donât see that working. Timâs thing is heâs either working with Bruce or heâs not doing the hero deal. He was still acting as his Robin even when Bruce âdiedâ so whatever he becomes, If anything else, would still need to fit the Batman vibe.
Regardless I think Damian should probably still work with Dick. I agree that none of the boys will probably take the mantle. Cass is the one who feels the strongest about it the way Bruce does, so why not start establishing something new for Damian now? Heâs already pulling away although idk if thatâs being well received by fans or not.
I didnât dislike Tim as RR and I think a lot of other fans enjoyed it too, but itâs hard not to think of it as a placeholder identity. Especially since it was meant for Jason (not that I think DC will ever do the work to finish bringing him back into the fold proper). Iâm used to Jason as hood, but it doesnât make much sense to me tbh. None of the aspects of joker that Jason integrates into his identity do, but yâknow logic whatever.
I think DC really needs to clean all this up but I donât know if they care to. Itâll be about what makes money and is easy to market, not what makes sense, sadly. GrantedâŚseeing some of their past attempts maybe this is best. We get enough character assassination as it is.

Not you popping out of nowhere a year later with a new fic in a fandom I'm going to have to learn about so that I can read it
the way I'm literally so sorry it's not Dark Knight Joker (I've been putting in work on that fic too this year, I promise! it's sitting at 70 pages and if this frenzy of productivity lasts I hope to turn it towards that next, Ledger Joker is somehow always easier for me to write in the winter) but the heart wants what it wants when it wants it, and Jerome Valeska, who is a bigger flirt and a better boyfriend to an OC (somehow, despite the⌠atrocities) than TDK Joker is what this heart wants right now.
but since I've got you can I give you (and anyone else out of the know) my elevator pitch on Fox's Gotham right quick? There'll be some spoilers but only the kind of spoilers I think you need to hear to decide whether or not you want to watch this show, I prommy. THANKS
ok SO do you ever find yourself wondering when comic book properties got so BORING? do you ask yourself where all the color went? do you find yourself nodding along when your buddy complains that if comic book show writing is gonna be so shitty, it might as well also be fun? look no further than seasons 2-5 of Gotham I promise you will not regret watching seasons 2-5 of Gotham
(season 1 was when they were committed to trying to run it like a straight prequel where Batman and his entire Rogues gallery wouldn't exist for another 20 years, and they also thought they were making a gritty detective show about the GCPD, although nobody was allowed to say fuck and everyone both outside of canon and in it knew that the best place to "detect" criminals in Gotham was inside the GCPD itself, but fortunately they gave that up after one season and switched over to just doing a kidfic version of Batman with a slightly-younger-but-still-weirdly-adult-given-that-they're-beefing-with-a-12-year-old Rogues Gallery)
Gotham, once it hits its stride in season 2, thinks it's a comic book movie from the 90s. Gotham thinks it's a comic book run from the 90s, period. I think almost every major character dies and comes back to life at least once. It's in the same nebulous simultaneously modern and steampunky-old-fashioned time period as A Series of Unfortunate Events and they lean harder into the design with every season that passes. Nobody has any common sense and NOBODY talks like a person. Gotham features the wettest, cuntiest version of Oswald Cobblepot I've ever seen and at one point he gets fake haunted (? it's been a while, I'm not clear on that point anymore).
(They do introduce Jerome in Season 1, though, so you might have to watch the first season after all. sorry.)
At some point they cast Cameron Monaghan as a character they named Jerome Valeska and they're like "Okay, Cam. You are playing a PROTO-JOKER. The real actual Joker isn't around yet and besides we don't have the rights to him, so be subtle, right? Play it cool. Just tasteful hints."
And Cam went "10-4, heard you loud and clear, dw about a thing" and then proceded to blast everyone's nips off when he did what every actor to play the Joker after Heath Ledger has been desperate to do and THEN some-- not only did he play the spiritual successor to Ledger's Joker, but he played the spiritual successor to Nicholson's Joker, he played the spiritual successor to Hamill's Joker, he did his own thing, the shifting nature of the role meant he was able to be like 6 different Jokers at once and every single one of them fucks. Like, I legitimately 100% believe his performance on this not-quite-CW-Batman TV show made a big enough splash that it played a part in the DC execs looking at Jared Leto's Machine Gun Kelly-meets-Spirit Halloween Mallrat Joker cosplay and going "âŚI think I've had enough of this guy," thank God.
Obviously Jerome is TO ME the heir to the Joker throne with no contest at all, not even a little bit, and besides him, the show is a blast and feels like what Batman felt like to me as a little kid-- like the 90s movies, like the animated series. Is it GOOD? I'm obviously too emotionally compromised to give you a solid answer. I suspect not, but if you're like me (and if you like my writing, then I think you probably are), you don't need good as much as fun and interesting, and Gotham is definitely that. It's streaming on Max, but if for SOME incomprehensible reason you don't want to watch one literal hundred 40-minute episodes of Riverdale-but-make-it-Batman, I am 100% amenable to uploading the 13 episodes that feature Jerome onto my google drive and posting the links here for anyone who wants them lmao. (If it's not obvious, it's the sort of show where you don't really have to watch everything to figure out what's going on-- it's a soap opera, you'll get the gist.)
ok that wasn't so much an elevator pitch as it was a stuck-on-the-bus-with-a-guy-who-won't-stop-trying-to-get-you-to-join-his-cult pitch but give it some thought anyway, ok? ok. love you bye
#cosmicpro#tl;dr or you want to avoid any spoilers at all? just skip down to the bolded part <3#I'm not even talking about my beloved OC Isabel here either. this is Jerome's show. FOR NOW#she'll get her spotlight soon enough <3#leto 'joker' catching strays as always#the way I wrote like 6 paragraphs and it doesn't even scratch the surface of the kind of shit that goes on in Gotham#I DIDN'T EVEN TALK ABOUT BARBARA KEAN.

Do you have your own ranking of Tim and Stephanie's suits?
Sure, I'll give 'em scores out of 10.
Starting with Tim:
The Classic: 10/10. Who doesn't love the original? It was a brand new take on Robin and it stood out and still does to this day given that it's the one most seen on merchandise. This suit became the default in a way, and for good reason. It's simple, functional, and timeless. Great suit.
The "my best friend is dead" Robin suit: 7/10. I don't hate it, it's just not as good as the original. The more simplistic and darker color scheme is indicative of not just Tim's meaning for the colors, but the decline in a lot of his optimism. This was the start of his downward spiral and he never really came back from this era. It's a good suit, I wouldn't call it great. She's basic (affectionate).
Red Robin (the 2009 run): 9/10. I would put this at a perfect 10 if he didn't have the stupid cowl. I hate that thing, and the only saving grace for it is the fact that it could have been there to cover his burn scars. Swap that for the Unternet mask and it would be my fav.
See?
(^Original art by Marcus To, recolored and posted on Reddit)
Unternet Red Robin: 10/10. Ok this one is so cute because it shows just how much Tim still looks up to Dick. This is basically a rebranded Nightwing suit, complete with finger stripes, and it's adorable. This is what Tim envisioned himself as in the Unternet and is that not just precious? And I love this dorky mask. It's got a giant bird beak and it's so stupid that it's endearing as hell.
Swan Queen Red Robin: 2/10. Not sorry, I hate this suit. I don't know what it's trying to be but it's a mess. There's too much going on and it needs to be simplified. I hate the tiny logo on his chest.
This stupid shit: 0/10. What the fuck is this?
The Rebirth Robin suit: 10/10. This suit is spectacular. Plays on the original but modernizes it in a way that still feels like Tim. I love this suit, it is exactly the kind of look I would want for Tim in this day and age as Robin.
Drake: 0/10. Burn it. I don't think anything needs to be said. We all agree, yes? Good.
Not going to speak on the video game suits but just know that I hate all of those too.
Moving on to Steph:
The Classic: 10/10. It's campy, it's colorful, I love it. She made this herself and I think that makes it even better. It's such a classic look for the time and I think it's wonderful. Look at that giant shoulder strap. What is that for? No one knows. It went through a few variations over the years. The shoulder strap got smaller but so dud the outward facing underwear and they gave her basically a thong. Not cool, DC.
Stephanie's homemade Robin suit: 2/10. This is just pure over sexualization and I hate it. Why does it have to be a loose crop top? Why is it so tight?
Stephie the Hedgehog: 9/10. This one is also way too boob heavy but I like the overall look better. The skirt is still debatable as far as movability goes, but the hair is so great that I'm just going to ignore the flaws, silently dock it a point and move on.
Spoiler 2.0: 8/10. It's a good suit. This is the one I based my cosplay off of. It's simplistic but it still has the essence of the original with those ridiculous boots and gloves. I still love this, I just like the original better.
Katavi: ?/10. I don't know how to comment on this design. I love that Stephanie just wanted to help and took up a new persona in a new place to do so. I think the design is lovely but I can't speak on whether it's as appropriate worn by a white character. I think character wise, it makers sense for Stephanie, but I don't know what to say about it past that.
Batgirl (the 2009 run): 10/10. I'm skipping past the borrowed suit since this suit is specifically Steph's, and it's perfection. It's classic but with the touch of purple to make it hers. It's simple, but it's great. I'd love to have this suit someday.
Nightwing: 10/10. This is a great suit that we were robbed of. I would love this look more with Stephanie's short bob that she had for a while, but this look is so great.
The New52 suit: 10/10. This may come as a shock considering my distaste for the Ew52, but I actually really love this Spoiler suit. It's a great mix of some of the elements of her classic Spoiler suit, heavily mixed with her Batgirl 2009 look, and modernized in a way that feels very Steph. It's scrappy looking, idk. I just like it. I really love the half mask on it too.
Future's End: 6/10. I feel like it's missing a lot. It's drab.
Future State: 0/10. This is Rose Wilson.
The Batgirls suit: 7/10. This is just the Rebirth look with a purple bat slapped on. Lazy. I still like the look, but I wish they did something new.
There we go! Best I can do on this anon, I hope you enjoyed!

You don't know me... but let's work on that
Okay so like, I'm never active anymore. Really just gave up being active on tumblr because who the f is active here. Also I have a funny name now so it's fine- don't hate me for it.
Anyway, I thought, wow I really hate some stuff with teaching and no one having resources to free educational things so I thought to myself, why don't I just post items on here?!
Yea so that's what this is. You have classes you want to take, you don't have the ability to learn almost everything you ever wanted? Your teacher sucks ass? Well hopefully this helps makes everything better.
Mostly, all resources I know are about science and math (đŤ˘wow surprised?!), and they can be tailored for whatever you need in long run. This became much longer than I thought it would be lol!
Topics Included:
Computer Science
Physics/Engineering
Math (HS Algebra and up)
Arts/Humanities
Computer Science
https://github.com/ossu/computer-science: this literally builds so much for coding and getting someone into programming. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for some classes (I don't know how much it would help with AP Computer Science or Principles, but it has so much information, anyone really wanting to learn about code could get started with this.
https://www.freecodecamp.org/: another win website, I'd def say a little more chaotic (?). It depends how you want to learn you know. Love the web design bs, not really into it, but their tuts and videos were helpful enough for myself.
https://cs50.harvard.edu/x/2023/: Another beauty, these lectures really give so much for programming. Classes are held where you can even attend without being a harvard student. Lectures are intense imo, as it is a lot of content all in your face but just love the guy.
https://www.youtube.com/@alexlorenlee: Java. If you need any help in starting Java, I love these videos. He got me through a horrible class in my uni. Love him fr fr.
https://www.youtube.com/@crr0ww: Learning about any sorta malware, educational resources to get started with understanding your network, overall, just a really smart and funny guy. Love his videos. Really good at explaining basic contents.
https://www.youtube.com/@ColinGalen: Recommend his learning videos and how to think almost like a chess grandmaster. My own cs professor talks about drawing out code and being able to actually write what is going on in code.
Physics/Engineering/Sciences?
(sorry, I'm not mechanical engineer đ)
Electrical Engineering: Youtuber Michel Van Biezen is AMAZING. Also, dude as a sick ass drip and I love the bow tie. His circuits and physics lectures are so entertaining and helpful to understand. I really really really loved his videos as they helped me pull my grades up. His explanations are top tear, I really feel like he's so good at this.
GaTech Coursera Circuits: There are two of these classes here.
DC Circuit Analysis: First course. Helps you learn almost everything you should have learned in Physics Two and if not, don't worry they explain it somewhat well. Videos are condensed and good enough for someone to watch. Just know they don't do calculations on screen, and those can be pretty lengthy to solve.
AC Circuit Analysis: Same as above, they don't have as many items for this course, but def know it is a good course and necessary for understanding more modern circuit applications.
Every engineer wants to be him -> Michael Reeves , if you've never heard of him, please. This man will make you want to recreate his robots. He's a genius. He's everything every engineer wishes they could be.
NileRed : Do you want to be a fake chemist because Ochem made you want to die?? Well actually I just took chem 1 and changed my major, but NileRed it literally so fun. His chem videos are so fun and cool.
Thought Emporium -> mad biology scientists? Love this guy too! He's trying to be Spider-man and I love him for that. I hope he recreates those spiderwebs, I've been watching it for so long. Love this dude.
Robotics Engineering: Done by a youtuber who love for the anime reps!!! This guy focuses more on VR/AR, but loves carrying the same vibes as Michael Reeves, a Russian youtuber I know, and just overall very fun.
Mechatronics: Things to know for going into the field of Mechatronics (basically this is Robotics, just the more machine side). They recommend having that backbone in the core classes.
Learning for Engineering Students: Love that someone who was an actual engineer made some sort of engineering studying help. Would totally recommend watching, along with some other youtubers,
Tamer Shaheen (Mechanical Engineer) notes and exam recitation guides
British Engineer Loved her video, really similar to my own method of doing repeated practice problems.
My own study method!!! Create a google docs with Three columns:
Topic -> Usually this is how I'd organize the question. I did docs like these for each class, so I instead would put this as some topic within my class OR I would organize it by assignment it correlated to. I.E. alternating circuits or homework
Question -> really self explanatory, make sure to give details, dates, who you think you should ask, etc etc. There are no dumb questions, I'd really recommended these for computer science and would totally give my notes out for that shit.
Answers -> another self explanatory category, however, would recommend doing something a lil different with this box. Don't overwrite explanations. Also, don't take explanations. Write your own understanding of the solution, and a link/cite/provide some evidence for you or someone to turn back to.
Math
Organic Chemistry Tutor: Just, this man is everything. He has so many videos not only for chemistry but for other classes. I put him in math mostly because I used him for calculus I and II.
Khan Academy : Tbh, I loved their calculus course material. I'm not the biggest fan of them overall with some other provided materials (Like their SAT prep, really is only effective for helping students take it online and grading fast, but I'm pretty sure I have another post explaining how I found online materials for that bs and got a passing grade).
3 Blue 1 Brown (Math/ Calculus) : I feel like everyone knows him, he's so good at visualizing concepts. Great but still very complex videos, please understand that before going in. You might not be able to understand everything on first try, but always draw them out.
Studying Pure Math : Once you finished calculus and would enjoy some rigorous applications/learn about higher levels of math, this youtuber has linked a multitude of resources for those mathematical desires lol.
Small ideas of what is mathematics but this is such a beautiful video in explaining how mathematics is built up from each other. I think it changes your idea of how to study math (however, he does say you shouldn't memorize this stuff, but in the next bullet point, I wanted to show how I studied for math which did involve memorizing methods).
Studying thing I learned from youtuber but had sorta done myself, just think showing off this youtuber who's in oxford is fun!!!!
(Okay so I didn't find it, but the youtuber I thought who said the idea was Lucy Wang, still linking channel for the woman in math!!!).
So, in class you should be writing down examples, writing questions to the side, and looking for a pattern. When you find this pattern, you can organize your notes and your test answers. So like when doing an optimization problem in calculus, you have to draw the system, set up equations, ask what are you solving for, and the show the methods you used to solve. I would also recommend this for any numerical questions (for me, this included circuits, physics, and other math classes I've taken for a long time).
Professor Leonard: This man saved my calculus III grade. I love him. Please, he has almost all calculus classes, I don't think he has finished Differential equations and possibly one of his algebra courses, but his information is just great. His method of teaching is also phenomenal. And in the last video of his multivariable calculus playlist, he had the best quote ever. His wife and him were expecting a child, and he stated (this is horribly paraphrased but this was all I was thinking during my own calc III final):
"I'm pregnant- wait no- my wife's pregnant... But damn, I bet you I'd look good pregnant."
Arts/Literature/Humanities
https://www.youtube.com/@Chommang: Beautiful art, really enjoyed drawing alongside. Implores you to find your own style, but helps with anatomy, reference drawing, I literally knew nothing about this bs. But I really enjoy the videos.
Puppet History : Okay. So I know what you'll say if you saw these videos. But really, just if you want to start with history, it's such a good introduction, such a fun cast, and the lore is also something that I really think makes characters funny, long lasting, god. It's just so good and well written for some youtube puppet fever dream.
Reading Analysis: Literally just came up on my rec on youtube. Really nice in explaining the actual analysis of the text.
Japanese: I used it for practicing listening to Japanese, mostly just me trying to recognized sounds and words. I'm still a beginner in Japanese, cannot actually hold conversations, but this has helped me listen to others better.
Geography Now!: Learning anything about countries/ needing to learn about countries relationships, just enjoy knowing much trivia. I'd recommend this for those items. Also like, learning about other countries are so much fun! I would def say, there are countries he doesn't examine as in depth, ie, India. But if you're just getting into geography boom, here you go.
Some other recommendations for history, look up on coursera, edx, I mostly learn alot of these topics on youtube with video essays. Ngl, your own political beliefs will heavily affect how you learn these topics. There's no way around this. I hope for the sake of whomever, just please, learn both sides actual arguments. And if debates ever turn to arguments/yelling matches, leave. You need to have a strong sense of self- and in the end, if the other person doesn't understand or want to, there's nothing you can do about it. You can keep thinking your own beliefs, or feel inclined to research the topic later. If anyone gives you shit for believe in something that turns out to be factually incorrect, accept how you were wrong, why you were wrong, and understand that being wrong is a path of knowledge. If someone else believes you are wrong, however, they can't factual cite this, that is just a disagreement over some topic.
A thing I've said to others, is that everyone interprets the bible differently. You interpret His messages in a way I can never understand. And I the same. Since I cannot tell you how to interpret the bible, you cannot tell me. Something I truly believe is everyone has their own connection with God (not saved to Christianity, I know this is from an idiot in the bible belt in the USA but we'll deal with that later), and that connection guides them through life.
So for building this mindset, some books/videos I'd recommend:
*Please know, these books may contain triggering/unpleasant topics that readers should look into before selecting a book to read.*
The Myth Of Sisyphus, Albert Camus
Everyone's favorite psychopath, No Longer Human Osamu Dazai
Capitalism Realism Mark Fisher
Ecrits Jacques Lacan
Make It Stick Science of Successful Learning
Absurdism: A video similar to topic above, less academia-y language.
Classics Worth Reading: love love love Emmie! Her videos are pretty fun and I really enjoyed her classics recommendation.
Small amount of topics to go look up, search what you love, stay away from what you don't like. In the end, help yourself become a well rounded person by building up those ideas.
If yall wanna add more, please please please! Education is something I'll never get enough of. I believe it should be free, nonpolitical, and inspiring for all. Everyone deserves education because it makes us smart, capable, and healthy individuals. It builds our future. Good luck in your educational future. Hopefully I have spur of the moment to post my small study ideas, or resources for studying, so that others can focus being more time efficient. Just remember, control f (windows <3) or command f (mac users) to find whatever you need.

DREAM VIRTUEMOIR PROGRAMS
1. I Want You / Paint It Black
Music:
Paint It Black (The Rolling Stones) as the main song, but because it is so fast paced and quite lyric heavy, I feel it needs an instrumental section to add some contrast. I Want You (Sheâs So Heavy) (The Beatles) is the song I can think of that fits the vibe- if I were to find something else less well known that fits better I would of course use that. Ideally, I would prefer to use just Paint It Black because single-song programs are so rare now but I do think it needs some kind of transition- going gang busters to Paint It Black for 3 or 4 mins would kill them. If I Want You were to be used I would definitely use the end piece⌠the kinda discord guitar part.. since this is of course not a real scenario Iâm just going to imagine there is some ideal way to piece the songs together.
Inspiration:
I already made an IG real using Paint It Black that I set to Farrucas because it has a very similar energy and the chore and the music fit kinda well. Even though Farrucas is Spanish guitar and Paint It Black is sitar (Indian guitar) it has that similar pace. That was really just a fun little video Iâm not basing any of my dream program off of that. Where Iâm really taking my inspiration from for this is my favourite TV show âThe Americasâ. Iâm not going to go into detail of the story because it isnât important, just the theme, character inspiration etc.. So this show is about two KGB spies undercover in DC in the 80âs (touchy subject rn I know but letâs not worry about that). The characters are a man and woman âfakeâ married so there is a lot of complicated love and feelings so there is that underlying theme complementing VM but really the character inspiration for this dance is just the visual of these two badasses. This is essentially a spy thriller program but finally not using James Bond music. I guess also, and youâll see in the costumes Iâve imagined thereâs also a bit visual of inspiration from the Matrix. Lastly, the styling for Sweet Dreams from TTYCT- them, like that.. I need more of that (even if itâs just in my imagination).
Chore/dance style:
This is the one part of this dream program that I canât give a lot visual reference for- like Iâm not actually gonna go choreograph it and even then, I couldnât do it on ice or actually have VM to choreograph it on, so Iâm just gonna have to give vague descriptions. This would be a modern jazz program- think similar to their 08/09 Pink Floyd program. I imagine some super epic midline/non-touch chore, some butterflies some insane foot work (esp from S) lots of sharp, fosse-ess arms, voguing type upper body work. As for lifts some of their fast-rotational lifts with T in some kind of contorted position around S head. I imagine a traveling rotational version of their first stat. lift from Latch. Probably the Prince lift. I also remembered this group dance on SYTYCD S9 by Mia Michaels (who T really wanted to work with during their career) and this is both visually, stylistically close to what Iâm going for.
youtube
Costuming:
The idea of VM skating in these costumes is so exciting to me and I try not to dwell on the fact that Iâll never get to see it but oh well.
- A couple of variations on this: Iâll describe the version Iâve settled on then some other options (also please bare with me Iâm not a great drawer when it comes to people and Iâm still learning to use procreate).
So: Matching, slick black cat suits. Long sleeves and turtle necks. Tessaâs with a diamond-shaped back cut out with red sparkles flaring out in a gradient from the edge (similar to MR dress). Both of them will have the same red rhinestone design around the wrists (similar to her SFTD dress). T will wear black skates (not boot covers coz I hate them). T with a slick black low bun and Scott with his MR hair but slicked down a bit more (sorry Iâm not gonna try draw the hair).
- Now some other alternatives I toyed with- just in my head because it took about 2 hours just to draw these ones. I originally really wanted both their costumes to be identical- S with the diamond back cut out as well but when I drew it on the model it just didnât look good- it would probably look better on S but Iâve settled on his being solid black- essentially what he wore for LTR just jazzed up. For both of them I toyed with sparkles in the same gradient pattern around the turtle neck- but I felt it would be too much.. maybe on Scottâs since he doesnât have the back cut out.
- Another option they could go with- because Iâm not totally sold on the cat suits once they are actual costumes. In my head it looks great and I want it to be as slick as possible, but for S Iâm just not sure- not for any superficial reasons⌠just as a costume then adding movement it would depend. An alternate to the exact same look but tight black jeans/trousers with a black belt cause I still want that streamline look and with the top part being a leotard- yes for both of them. Scottâs costumes in the past- anything tight ie: MR is a leotard that undoes underneath, much like fashion leotards.
-Now hereâs the fun part that I donât know whether (if I was choreographing/styling.. in charge of everything).. somehow I want them to wear sunglasses.. either aviators (as in Sweet Dreams) but I would have to see it styled first to see if aviators would work and if not I would go with kinda, Matrix style glasses- like that more 80âs style. I canât imagine these being used for the whole program, or at least down over their eyes for the whole program, I donât really know it would have to be experimented with but I definitely like that as a visual and would make for some cool chore and partner work.
Short/Free/Exhibition:
So, in order to get some truly epic step sequences it would have to be a comp program. I feel Iâm leaning towards a SD rather FD, just with the pace of Paint It Black thatâs a lot for a 4 min program- imagining the split would be probably 2-3 mins PIB and the remaining IWY (or alternate instrumental) so with a SD having the split 2-1 (minutes) seems more manageable- not just for VM but choreographically filling 2-3 mins of chore to Paint In Black matching the pace is⌠a lot.. having said that, it feels wrong to only cut a 1 min section of the I Want You outro so Iâm not sure, but Iâm leaning towards SD. In this imaginary scenario of course, we are ignoring set rhythms and compulsory patterns (even though thatâs not a thing anymore). I said in my IG reel using PIB (for the FS history buffs) that the 10/11 season OD theme was set to be 50/60/70 music- and of course there was no set pattern in the OD format so no need to worry about fitting time signatures/BPM. That of course did not happen and the CD + OD were scraped and they brought in the SD. I donât feel or more I couldnât see them skating this dream program Iâve imagined when they were just 21/23 anyway- I feel like it would require more maturity in movement-more sensuality, and just more exploration of dance styles since they hadnât done a lot of âjazzâ at that point. I can just imagine it being a better program if performed in their comeback era. So I think it would be shame not to see a program this epic in competition, however it also really excites me the prospect of seeing it under lights and from a set design perspective we could do some really interesting things with spotlights/strobes/lighting design in general. This is all theoretical anyway so we donât need to choose⌠maybe there can be a comp version and a show version.
Let me know your thoughts on this dream program. I have a whole list of others ready to dream up as well!

2 Kings 12: 19-21. "The Facility."
Joash institutes a Zoe, a convention throughout the population, like laying cable on a seabed in order to connect continents.
"Sharing wealth requires convention, and speech and script are manifestations of that (JOHN 1:4). Life is a cloud of interactions. Its beginning may be feeble and weak (JAMES 4:14) but it has the potential to bring about God's Kingdom (HEBREWS 12:1, 1 THESSALONIANS 4:17)."
In modern times we would call this minting money. The Crown and the Federal Reserve at the behest of the King and State Houses can make money appear out of thin air and bubbble up prosperity from underneath the population.
There is a science to this, we are quite good at it when the will to do is there. Proper management of a Mint puts an end to greed, corruption, poverty, it ends wars, and reconstructs war zones. It is difficult to imagine because all of our money is invisible now, but all the money in the world has originated from persons or institutions affiliated with the government. All of it ends up in the hands of private individuals no matter what happens.
Should the intention of minting money be to end poverty, apartheid, war, all the kinds of strife, certainly those things are for sale. They can be purchased and traded in for a better world if one wants to do a good job of it. We know this works.
Washington DC used to be called the Murder Capitol of the World. Mayor Muriel Bowser its most recent Mayor rebuilt nearly the entire city by building new schools, working with developers and her Police Chief and now there are few problems. Her government is federally funded and her bank also collects taxes. We know hosw to make cityscapes work. Why Mayor Bowser can do it and Vladimir Putin cannot is not because the science isn't there its because the character is missing.
How to maintain one's Character is the focal point of this Book of Kings. Joash in spite of himself lost his due to a conspiracy and an assassination.
Now what are these and how do they mold the Character of the King or the Prince? Or those in line to become either?
The entire Torah is a Conspiracy designed to wipe out all that ignoble and impure about the human condition. Right from the beginning of Bereshit, God explains how mankind is the pinnacle of creation and his approach to sentience is staged. It has problems, tests, there are issues. The first issue we encounter is the penis.
The Torah says do not let the penis conspire against you, conspire against it. This requires absolute authority of one's Officials, the faculties, to achieve preeminence over the root drivers of one's personality from how the eyes see, the ears hear, all the appetites.
Should any of these rebel against their owner, there will be little slip ups. Big slip ups require assassinations. Joash was assassinated because in spite of the Zoe, his officials could not control his greed.
He minted money but took more than his share. The Officials felt the kingdom had places to go, needed the extra money for the roads, and the selfish king was in the way so they killed him:
19Â As for the other events of the reign of Joash, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?Â
20 His officials conspired against him and assassinated him at Beth Millo, on the road down to Silla.Â
21Â The officials who murdered him were Jozabad son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer. He died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. And Amaziah his son succeeded him as king.
The Gematria for the above verses are:
v. 19 the value in Gematria is 6606, ×â×â×֜פ֜ץ×â, "and Ephesus", "time to move on."
v. 20 Beth Millo is the "house that overflows."
"The root ××× (malal) relates to the cycle of harvest, storage and redistribution. Various derivative forms emphasize the various stages: the severing of something from its natural origin, or its subsequent storage in dedicated facilities, or the redistribution or overflowing from those facilities.
Verb ××× (malal) may be used to mean to utter or say (and the speaking of the mouth equals the overflowing of the heart). Noun ××× (milla') describes an uttering. Noun ××××× (melila) describes an ear of wheat.
This verb may also emphasize the languishing and withering of whatever was cut off, in which case it has a more common by-form, namely ××× ('amal). Adjectives ×××× ('amelal) and ×××× ('umlal) both mean feeble.
This verb may also be used to mean to circumcise, in which case it has a more common by-form, namely ××× (mul). This latter verb comes with a second by-form, namely ××× (mahal), which actually mostly means to weaken.
The verb ××× (male') means to be full, speaking mostly of a storage facility that's been filled with whatever was extracted from the land that produced it. It may also describe a river that's overflowing, or a person who acts from the contents of his heart. Nouns ××× (male') and ×××× (mele'a) mean fullness.
Nouns ×××× (millu'a) and ×××ת (mille't) denote the filling of gold with jewels and nouns ××× (millu') and ×××× (millu') describe a setting or installing of monumental stones or the ordination of priests."
The Road to Silla= the economics of "feeding the multitude."
"The verb ץ×× (salal) primarily means to cast or heap up, and is mostly used in relation to building highways. Highways, of course, come to pass when first a heap of individuals individually choose to take the same route, thus creating a natural path, after which a government of sorts piles rocks upon the path and tops it off with pavement.
In much the same way, collective handiness evolves into a natural or spontaneous cultural quality, and finally a formal technology from which even foreigners may benefit.
Likewise the command to create a highway for the Lord in the desert has nothing to do with Jeeps and Land Rovers and everything with growing smarter as a natural people and finally bringing forth formal science (or language or technology).
Likewise "lifting up the Lord" has nothing to do with howling inane homages toward the church ceiling, but rather with achieving responsible mastery of created nature.
Noun ץ××× (solela) describes a piled up mound or wall. Noun ץ×× (sullam) describes Jacob's ladder, which obviously wasn't actually a ladder but rather a reference to cognition. Nouns ×ץ×× (mesilla) and ×ץ××× (maslul) mean highway. The verb ץ×× (sela) is only used in the imperative form, and as a musical term that commands people not simply to rise up but to settle their verbal expressions into a harmonious whole.
Verb ץ×× (sala) also means to pile up but emphasizes the tossing and particularly the tossing aside of elements that won't fit a standard. This verb (or an identical other) is also used to describe the heaping up of gold bits in order to weigh them against a standard weight.
Noun ץ× (sal) probably derives from ץ×× (salal) and describes a kind of basket, obviously one used to pile stuff into. A most obvious discussion of this root and its methods and effects is found in the New Testament, as the various accounts of the miraculous "feeding of the multitude."
The value in Gematria is 3517, ×â×â×â×, "that's it" = the pursuit of an ever evolving state of universal happiness.
v. 21:
Jozabad= What God has given
Shimeath= "a report of fame"
Jehozabad= gifts and talents
Shomer= take creat care over
The City of David= and long lasting beauty
Amaziah= and great strength and power will be yours
The value in Gematria is 11877, ×××××ââ, yeahzz, "God's Attributes are the Officials."
"The Hebrew verb ע×× ('azaz), generally means to be strong or powerful. This verb is often applied to denote one of God's inherent qualities (Psalm 89:13) compared to man's weakness."
As far as our Russia probleme and the one in Gaza and other places in the world where there are surprising numbers of homeless and impoverished persons, a simple boolean analysis fo what makes Washington DC a success and these places failures in comparison will tell us how to elevate conditions and manage them long-term.

wait what's your dick characterization then? in a pervious ask you mentioned you had a pretty concrete perception of dick... do you mind sharing?
oh not at all, although itâs kinda hard for me to figure out how to put stuff like this into words so apologies in advance if this gets a little all over the place
this might be a bit of a weird place to start but given that iâm an artist i have an easier time thinking in terms of visuals, so first off: when i think âdick graysonâ iâm almost always referring to nightwing, but i consider âused to be robinâ such an integral part of his character that it informs a significant chunk of his design. like i usually draw his hair neatly cropped and parted symmetrically down the middle, reminiscent of but not exactly the same as this kind of hairstyle:
which is kinda funny considering when i do draw him as robin i just have his hair sticking up all over the place, but in my defense i think heâs too young to care about his hair here
itâs not all about surface level looks though, i see even modern nightwing dick as evoking the general vibe of golden age comics, if more in idealism than aesthetics. heâs got kind of a boy scout thing going on, and it feeds into his approach to vigilantism more than anything else. thatâs part of why, if youâre prone to noticing these sorts of things, i always draw him as having better posture and more dramatic body language in costume than in civvies
might be as good a time as any to bring up that i think dick is a standout case among all the bats concerning his secret identity â i think nightwing and dick grayson are distinct aspects of his personality, but they are both equally Him. to contrastâthereâs an argument to be had as to whether or not batman is the ârealâ bruce, at the very least his two identities seem starkly separated from each other, i donât see cass as being meaningfully distinct from black bat/orphan(?) at all, to jason red hood is a symbol and a statement and a threat, to damian robin is a legacy, etc. dick grayson and nightwing are just different genuine pieces of the same person.
as for more specific personality stuff, despite the Classic Superhero streak i think dick is ultimately more devoted to people than any kind of moral code. so like for instance the fact that he follows the no-kill rule has much more to do with loyalty to bruce than his own ideals. i donât think he *wants* to kill in general (more than anything else i see dick grayson as just a deeply, profoundly Good person. not to say heâs perfect or canât make mistakes, but in my more melodramatic moments iâd just outright say his real superpower is having the strongest moral compass in the entire dc universe) but his strict adherence to that rule isnât due to personal conviction or some kind of necessary self-control
on an interpersonal level (and iâm keeping this within the batfam bc 1) limited knowledge and 2) this is already getting long) iâve mentioned before i think heâs got a serious case of eldest daughter syndrome, but unlike most such cases heâs actually pretty well equipped for dealing with it. to an extent. he takes on responsibility almost automatically, and has an impressive capacity for managing people and anticipating what they need (emotionally or otherwise). combined with his experience leading a team, his training, and being a naturally gifted strategist, he has a hard time justifying looking the other way when his family needs him. unfortunately heâs also one of those people who keeps operating at peak performance right up until the second he falls apart entirely, and heâs much more cognizant of his physical limits than his emotional ones.
(relatedly but kind of a side note, i have a whole Thing about his relationship with damian iâm very in my feelings about it donât look at me)
imo the fanon idea of him as The Fun One or the emotional one is wildly oversimplified and downplays his competence, but thereâs a little bit of truth to it, in that a lot about dick grayson flies directly in the face of the darkness heâs surrounded by. tbh if i had my way he would always be written specifically as a slap in the face to anyone who sees kindness as naive, but i understand that my desire to weaponize fiction in response to things i find mildly irritating is âunsustainableâ and âyou canât just do literally everything out of spiteâ or whatever
but also lowkey i think my joke character summary for him from way back in like january when i knew almost nothing abt dc and was p much just poking fun at the fandom still kinda hits
#splashasks#anonymous#long post#dick grayson#feel free to ask clarifying questions i can and will keep going about this#also WOW itâs so much harder to put my thoughts into words than art#i will admit i had a moment after receiving this ask where i was like âcan you not tell from how i draw himâ#before realizing that is insane

10 Anti LO Asks
1. Pretty much every LO critic is also Anti PJO lmao. Just because PJO fans also dislike LO doesn't mean its critics do too.
2. the creator of covenant literally went viral several times over her dynamic takes on harley quinn and poison ivy to where several big name media sources were praising it and saying DC should pick them for their own and yet DC would rather use their WT partnership to give RS a one shot to shit on the gods once again that was so insignificant even the DC wiki doesn't link to it, despite them doing it for every modern comic issue and anthology they have. someone make it make sense.
3. i just love RS' comment of she'd NEVER do a Norse mythology comic because it's "too popular". ya know, because when you think of unknown mythology you think GREEK MYTHOLOGY. she probably instead knows she doesnt have a popular ship in it to force her weird cishet fantasies onto so that's why she wouldn't touch it (though at the very least Baldur/Hel is a far more interesting dynamic with a looser mythology to make up whatever you want than than HxP does, but why would RS know that?)
4. I do not get why LO has SO MANY characters in it. I was looking at a tier list for it and it had over as 100 different characters (not that you could tell, some of them are copy pasted faces) but seriously, why do they need SO many? Even just limiting it to only the characters in the hymn + the olympians it would only be about maybe 20 characters, which is more than enough, yet Rachel keeps adding more and more, which ironically end up taking away from time that should be used for HxP!
5. superman is probably the only character that is required to have a massive barrel chest but of course rachel doesn't give him that for??? reasons?? and wonder woman is another doe eyed skinny teenager?? im not even touching "circe" thats literally just her friend from art school and im not joking you can check her twitter and see theyre exactly the same. how uncreative is this woman.
6. "why doesnt rachel do LO in black and white? it'd look so much better!" because she can't design characters to save her life so she needs the colors to tell anyone apart, that's why. go on, turn your laptop or phone's color to black and white and pull up a random LO episode and try and tell anyone apart when the colors are gone and see how it goes. I promise you it wouldn't be a fun exercise.
7. TBH I would be totally cool with Eris as Zeus and Hera's daughter in LO if it weren't for the fact she's randomly designed EXACTLY like Nyx is?? Like you can get where she's going with the designs then just yanks the wheel in a random direction and thinks she's clever for it. I don't get it??
8. I get it's a Webtoon thing to have the men be all muscled but the LO men just look uncomfortable, you know what I mean? Their bodies are way too big for their heads (where are my lanky and chubby kings) and I don't see how it's supposed to be attractive. I get the same way with the women being cartoonishly hourglass shaped with their backs broken into an S. It's like RS is trying to be "sexy" but is doing in a way that it looks like satire of oversexualization, but it's supposed to be serious đ
9. do LO fans want us to critique PJO too? Because I know I certainly have a lot to say about it. Where to start, the racism? Making the Greek gods reject Greece for America? The cringey humor? Framing Ares as wrong for defending his daughter from sexual assault? The list goes on. If anything LO fans should love PJO, it has many of the same issues it does too that they love to defend.
10. WHY ARE THE LO BOOK COVERS ONLY GETTING MORE BORING I DONT GET IT

Jumping off from my previous question/suggestion, might I please ask if there are any superheroes you think would make fine Pulp Villains and any Supervillains you think would make convincing Pulp Heroes?
I'm gonna go ahead and remark that I'd personally suggest to anyone who's trying to create pulp characters inspired by superheroes (which would be probably about 90% of you who may want to do that sort of thing) to flip the script around a little. As in, don't try to create pulp analogues to the Justice League/Avengers upfront, but play around with some of the lesser-known icons and filter those through your idea of what âpulpâ means (which is gonna be quite different than my own or anyone elseâs).Â
Iâm not gonna really mention characters Iâve already talked about before like Vandal Savage or Namor, instead Iâll pick new ones and see what can be highlighted about them.
Regarding âSuperheroes who could make fine/convincing Pulp Villainsâ, even though heâs a character I've read basically nothing on, Martian Manhunter definitely leaped out to me as an obvious option. Heâs a Sci-Fi Superman who takes the first half of the name to an extreme that borders on comical, except heâs not a square-jawed white man, heâs a 1.000 year old green alien from Mars with shapeshifting powers who can look as monstrous as the artist desires. Heâs the product of an advanced civilization and genetic modification, and on top of the Flying Brick powerset and shapeshifting, he also has incredibly powerful and extensive telepathic abilities, he can become invisible, phaze through matter, use telekinesis and other weird abilities. A lot of pulp stories closer to sci-fi were based around the idea of taking one of these abilities and extrapolating horrific consequences for them, and Jâonn has those by the dozens. He also has an extremely mundane weakness that would allow him to be beaten by Macready with a blowtorch if thatâs where the story ended.
He was also a law enforcement officer from Mars who became a police detective and itâs even right there in his name, and again, I have never read anything heâs in (I should probably pick the Orlando mini), I know heâs for all intents and purposes a generally nice man who tends to job a lot in crossovers and cartoons, but the idea of taking all those great vast and horrifying alien powers, combining all of them into a single character who also happens to be the last survivor of a doomed planet (and one who actually lived through itâs collapse), and then making that character a former cop trying to resume his work on Earth?Â
That is a Pulp Supervillain begging to happen, and a particularly horrifying one at that. And hey, speaking of The Thing-
Now, Plastic Manâs potential for horror has already been explored quite a bit in some of the darker DC continuities like Injustice and DCeased, and itâs quite funny seeing a lot of these turn Plastic Man into The Thing because there were quite a handful of Wold Newton pages that ran with the idea that Macready from the original story was Doc Savage, and that the secret chemicals that Eel OâBrian was hit by that gave him his powers were actually samples of The Thing contained in one of Savageâs labs. Regardless, the idea of a former street crook suddenly gaining bizarre shapeshifting abilities that allow him to reign terror on his gangster associates could make for a great premise as a pulp crime story that veers into horror as the gangsters gradually figure out what is Eel OâBrianâs deal, and then the story can take a more tragic turn.
The thing about Jack Coleâs Plastic Man that modern takes on the character neglect is that, while Plas was a lively roguish anti-hero (arguably the first of itâs kind in comics), heâs still for intents and purposes âthe straight manâ (HA, right, Plastic Man being âstraightâ). Heâs the relatively sane hero who plays off Woozyâs wackier misadventures and the imaginative madness that Jack Cole paints his adventures with, and it makes for an interesting contrast considering Plastic Man is already a weird character, having to ramp up the strangeness of the world around him so that he still remains the sane man. There are ways to twist this into something quite horrifying, even tragic for Plastic Man as he either struggles to maintain coherency, or embraces the shifting chaos the worldâs spiraling into for better or worse (and definitely for the worse towards those on the receiving end of his vengeance, or even his humor).
Now, onto the flipside, regarding Supervillains that could become Pulp Heroes -
Normally Iâd not mention the Batman villains here, because I already have a lot to talk about in regards to them as is, they comprise some of my favorite comic characters, but I pretty much have to make an exception for Two-Face in this topic, as not only a pretty obvious option but one with even case studies to prove it, as not only do we have The Black Bat, a 1930s costumed pulp hero with an identical origin story and several other conceptual overlaps with Batman, as well as The Whisperer, a young hotshot police commissioner who dresses up as a disfigured vigilante to kill criminals without consequence (and whoâs somehow less of a maniacal asshole in his secret identity than in his regular one), but it turns out that there actually was a 1910s pulp hero called The Two-Faced Man:
Crewe was created by âVarick Vanardy,â the pseudonym of Frederic van Rensselaer Dey (Nick Carter, Doctor Quartz), and appeared in three short stories and two novels and short story collections from 1914 to 1919, beginning with âThat Man Crewâ (The Cavalier, Jan. 24, 1914).Â
Crewe is âThe Two-Faced Man.âÂ
He is in his forties and has gray hair and a âsharply cut and handsome profileâuntil one caught a view of the other side of his face and saw the almost hideous blemish that nearly covered it, and which graduated in corrugated irregularity from a delicate pink to repulsive purple.âÂ
Crewe is two-faced in another way. Crewe is a saloon owner in below Washington Square. But he has another identity: Birge Moreau, portraitist and socialite hanger-on. Crewe uses both his identities to solve crimes as an amateur detective.
The only person to know about both of Creweâs identities is a police inspector who is also Creweâs friend and who Crewe helps in pressing cases - The Encyclopedia of Pulp Heores by Jess Nevins
And speaking of obvious picks for Supervillains turned Pulp Heroes,
Assuming I even need to make a case for Kraven the Hunter other than just presenting this cropped panel from Squirrel Girl and in particular the art painted on the Kra-Van, or even just telling you to read Squirrel Girl and itâs take on âThe Unhuntable Sergeiâ (I had no idea most of the people saying âKravenâs arc in Squirrel Girl is as good if not better than Kravenâs Last Huntâ werenât actually joking in the slightest and I speak as someone who has Kraven among their absolute favorite Marvel characters, it had no right being that good), Iâm going to quote the brilliant Rogueâs Review from The Mindless Ones that lays down in painstaking detail why Kraven could make a killer protagonist in that horrifically over-the-top pulp fashion
One thing that strikes me writing this, is how well Kraven could hold his own comic. Thereâs always room for a book spotlighting a ruthless, hardcore, gentleman bastard, and Kravenâs raison dâetre makes him supremely versatile, so well suited to any genre, any environment. Itâs odd that more writers havenât jumped on the fact that in a universe where off-world travel is possible â indeed, common â a hunter like Kraven would have a field day.Â
I can just imagine the opening scene â herds of weird cthuloid bat creatures grazing in the gloomy green nitrogen fields, bathed in lethal, bone splintering fog, when, suddenly, LIGHT! from above and an unholy bellowing:Â âCTHGRGN fthgrgnARAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHGN!â
They look up in fear and then they start to run â ploughing into and over each other, tentacles flailing, as from the space-shipâs docking bay Kraven silently plummets, barely dressed for the cold, a glowing knife smothered in elder signs jammed between his teeth.Â
You should have seen him one night previous, sipping alien tokay around the Captainâs table with the other guests, discussing the morningâs hunt; and the way he insulted the Skrull dignitary by forgetting himself and accidentally sporting his favourite piece of formal wear: his boiling unstable dinner-jacket of many colours, fashioned from the hide of one of the Ambassadorâs super kinsmen.
Whoops!
Midway through Kraven explaining how the best way to irreparably damage a symbiote is to wait until its bonded with you and then seriously maim yourself, the Skrull decided it might be a good idea to simmer down, while his beautiful Inhuman lover hung on every word.
The deeper I get into this the more convinced I am that the MUâs hunter-killer extraordinaire wouldnât limit himself to bloody planet Earth. And neither would he limit himself to this dimension, or universe or timeline. The guyâd be just as at home leaping, sword raised, onto the back of a T-Rex in the Savage Land, as he would be ploughing through werewolves in the graveyards of Arkham or tracking a howling Demon across Mephistophelesâ realm.Â
Heâd work perfectly in all these environments because he has a damn good reason to be casting a bloody swathe through them: wherever thereâs big game, youâll find Kraven.
The next choice I guess is an oddball, but not that much of an oddball if you know already what is my main frame of reference towards Marvel
I donât think people appreciate enough that the main reason Shuma-Gorath has anything resembling a fanbase has nothing whatsoever to do with the comics he was in, but entirely because, when Capcom designers had a list of Marvel characters to pick from to work on Marvel Super Heroes, they took a look at the diet Cthulhu and went âgimme THAT oneâ, and then went all-in in giving the alien squid monster a funky personality along with a great stage and music and animations and all that great fighting game character stuff, and now heâs maybe the most popular Dr Strange villain along with Dormammu and Mordo, despite having ZERO film appearences or major showings in comic sagas.
Capcom's designers redefined Shuma-Gorath from a nebulous cosmic evil into a comically smug cartoon bastard who can rant about devouring all dimensions and souls horrifically while also cracking poses and zingers like âHow do you expect to win a fight with only two arms?â and having dinners with Dhalsim or hosting Japanese game shows in his endings, and it kills me that none of this ever made itâs way into any depictions of the character outside of MvC.Â
So thatâs kinda what Iâd go with. Iâd take Capcomâs Shuma-Gorath, depower him a bit obviously from his canonical power, and run with the premise of his MvC3 ending where he decides that, well, if he's the unlikely savior of this pathetic planet and these wretched human dogs like him so much, and heâs clearly having a much better time here among them than he ever had drifting among the stars cealessly consuming life, then maybe he can take a break from all that eldritch business and keep up hosting the Super Monster Awesome Hour and maybe fight whatever PITIFUL villains think can take HIS planet. I mean, heâll probably still end up destroying the planet by the end, but why not give this hero business a try?
Just until he gets his full powers back of course.Â
I mean you canât deny he DOES look pretty good in that bowtie, surely The Great Shuma-Gorath wouldnât be so unmerciful as to deny these vile wastes of flesh something good to look at in their brief and miserable lives.

okay so somebody asked me to rank the green lanterns a couple days ago and i just did it based on the general Vibes i got off each one because i don't know enough about the lanterns and now i want to hear from an expert SO: RANK EACH OF THE GREEN LANTERNS (the human ones but if you want to include others go crazy) FROM NOT-SO-BEST TO BEST AND EXPLAIN WHY
OKAY SO, first off, i love you. you should know that. second off, thereâs good and bad sides to all four human green lanterns and really this is just personal preference, and 3/4 of these are subject to change at some point, but this is where we stand as of right now:
4. Guy Gardner
first off, he was Halâs case worker in Emerald Dawn II (1991), because Hal got in trouble for drunk driving and got sentenced to a maximum security prison for 90 days to be used as an example. And I just, I donât like this plot in Halâs life, it doesnât make a ton of sense with his character or his profession (it would literally end a pilotâs career.) anyway, enough about Hal Jordan because Iâm supposed to be talking about Guy here. Guyâs trying to help Hal out which, gets him points in my book, but he also ends up like hating Hal at the end of this arc and itâs just like, Iâm sorry, thatâs unoriginal, pls try harder.Â
I also donât understand this whole Vuldarian DNA plot thatâs a thing with him, but his time owning a bar is cool. I just, I havenât read a ton of his comics and i havenât gotten attached to him yet, so thatâs that. Heâs in 4th, sorry Guy. Better luck next time.Â
3. Kyle Rayner
Kyle gets third place for two reasons: he has some pretty great interactions with Hal, with some key points of believing in Hal when he needs it the most (and that panel with the stacked rings and Hal taking Kyle flying. That panel gives me life for reasons I canât fully put into words.), and his girlfriend was literally murdered and stuffed into a fridge. I have to respect the trauma.Â
Reasons I donât like Kyle: you know how in middle school there was always that kid who would show off in gym class? or like your favorite teacher would pick some new kid to champion and you just kinda... hated them on instinct? Kyleâs an artist, but he has that vibe. Heâs the kid in school that suddenly everyone has decided is the Best and itâs annoying. I get it, heâs meant to be like the âbest green lantern,â the one to restore the corps when Hal and Parallax tore through it and then heâs a white lantern. I just... idk, heâs nice, heâs cute. I want to read more about when he was teamed up with Jason and some people have made it so that Hal has become his bother father figure which is also adorable, itâs just instinct to not make him my favorite. Iâve already done the whole phase of liking the âChosen One,â I donât need to go back to my Harry Potter phase. idk, please universe donât hate me for this.
2. John Stewart
okay, I have mad respect for John Stewart. Itâs also instinctual. Heâs the brains of the human Green Lantern operation. No, like, literally. If the four of them have one collective brain cell, John has it at least 89% of the time. Heâs an architect and a former Marine, he punched Hal in the face in a bar before they were both Green Lanterns, which is hilarious because as far as Iâm aware, itâs never touched on as being something either of them remembers. Kudos for not holding onto that rage, John. Hal has something to learn from you.Â
Thereâs also an interesting change in his way of thinking from when he was a Marine to his duty as a Green Lantern, and I like that growth even if itâs not always acknowledged. There is a bit during the Color Spectrum War arc where they go over his guilt at the destruction of a world, and it felt remarkably deep for a DC comic, even if it was technically part of a Hal series. Heâs just one of those guys that you canât help but respect because he seems to have all of his shit in one basket, and itâs a good counterbalance.
1. Hal Jordan
you knew this was coming. if you didnât, then you need to go look back at what my username is and think for a while. I love Hal Jordan almost more than life itself and it might be because of how well i can relate to this man. he is the most cocky, depressed, stubborn piece of shit in the galaxy, and I LOVE HIM. okay, like, there are so many different arcs about Hal and I know people have a tendency to not like him because like heâs the modern OG and he can be a piece of shit, and like, he was the bad guy but he came back from it and I just want to say: my dudes, thatâs the POINT.
Hal has flat out stated that HE doesnât even like himself, and you think that you as a reader are supposed to like him all the time? The man's life is rife with trauma, okay. Not everything he does is going to make perfect sense if youâre not paying attention and itâs just like. Honestly I canât explain it all. Hal runs on spite and coffee and the list of people he lives FOR is very short, but the list of people he lives IN SPITE OF is very long.Â
The dude runs with his gut constantly because thatâs what keeps him alive. Even Sinestro has pointed out that HAL DOESNâT MAKE SENSE. He acts on instinct, he doesnât plan out a shitload of battle strategies, and thatâs how Hal manages to keep besting these people over and over.Â
Also just, heâs sad boy. He wants to protect people, even if it means staying away from them. Heâs willing to take the blame and appear to go rogue MULTIPLE TIMES for things he believes in and to find the root of the problem and itâs just like... you really think a guy that was happy-go-lucky and didnât sit awake at night because of how prominent his failings are in his mind would be willing to do that? youâre wrong. sorry. you donât designate yourself as public enemy number one AFTER ALREADY FIGHTING TO COME BACK FROM THAT ONCE if you donât have a part of your brain saying you deserve it.
ALSO HIS GRIEF FOR COAST CITY WAS JUSTIFIED AND THERES A LONG LIST OF PEOPLE THAT COULD HAVE HELPED PREVENT HAL FROM BECOMING/SUCCUMBING TO PARALLAX AND A LOT OF THEM ARE ON THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OR TINY ANCIENT BLUE SMURFS.Â
THANK YOU FOR COMING TO MY TED TALK, GOODNIGHT.
(also iâm not sure if my answers were coherent towards the end but yeah!! send me asks about green lanterns because I have a lot of feelings. Anyway; Hal Jordan.)
#tag: katie answers things.... sometimes#green lantern#tag: kyle rayner is a green lantern#tag: john stewart is the brains of the operation#tag: hal jordan is my emotional support green lantern#tag: guy gardner is the warrior#tag: green lanterns light#this took me over an hour to write and i have a headache so yall better enjoy this#i tried to keep it short and sweet but i got to hal and that went out the window oopsie

i forgot to add: how do design ????!?!??????
So Iâm not expert but this is how I think of character design! (also sry if you were asking about clothing/outfit design thats a little different)
under the cut because this is long im so sorry
So in my opinion there are three really important aspects for character design!
AESTHETIC: obviously everybodyâs aesthetic is different, but this is more about what vibe the character has, what makes them THEM design wise.Â
INTENTION: who is the character supposed to be? this can range from their personality, their back story, their occupation, or their role in the story, but the design need to fit that intention.
COHESION: does the design go well together? or do certain aspects clash too much? obviously you can have disjointed parts of a character design, and if those serve a purpose then thats fine, but if its so disjointed its distracting from the character as a whole you might need to tweak things.Â
AESTHETIC: the contrasting part of the design (white flowers in dark hair, dark trim on dress, and dark shoes) provide interest to the eye. The mixing of round and sharp shapes also keeps the design from feeling âboringâ even though its relatively simple.Â
INTENTION: so what role would this little doodle character have? according to her design elements, shes cute and friendly with her round shapes (bouncy balls, babies, etc), but could have a sharp/fast/active or even dangerous edge to her with the triangles (arrows, knives etc). of course the design doesnât limit her possible roles. She could be a bubbly younger sister who teases the older protagonist, or maybe sheâs the villain hiding in plain sight. the shape this character design doesnât really have is squares(think bricks and rocks), which communicates that she might not be really strong, steady, or reliable.Â
COHESION: repeating the curves across her whole design builds cohesion, it communicates that âyes, these are all part of the same characterâ, it also allows the eye to ârestâ on a familiar shape or line.Â
NOW LETS LOOK AT SOME DESIGNS
(Boku no Hero Academia) so both of these characters are super heroes, but have vastly different design elements. so lets analyze them.
OCHAKO(the pink one) is all rounds, with a few pointed shapes in hair mostly, but a little on her costume as well. Her personality is cute, bubbly, and friendly which perfectly suits her soft and bouncy design. Howevre she also has a very slight edge to her, which is seen her determination and drive to improve herself over the course of the anime.Â
KIRISHIMA(the red one) at first glance, seems to be super pointy!! shapes that are usually seen on villains or really dangerous characters, but while he IS sharp(literally sometimes) and sometimes aggressive, he is also made of squares, which perfectly suits his loyal âi gotchu broâ attitude towards most of the other characters in the anime. Â
ISSUE AREAS: so the only problems i have with Ochako and Kirishimaâs designs is that their costumes each have one area that clashes a little too much for my taste. With Ochako, the belt over the color blocking stripes down her crotch are......questionable taste wise. I think the design would be better if the pink chest ended above the belt in a shallow v. not only would this mirror the triangle aspects of her hair, it would fit the belt outline, and continue the trend her costume has of being âgroundedâ or âheavyâ. Kirishima has those.... gears??? around his shoulders??? and while the gear teeth are technically squares, the gear shape itself is a circle, which is a shape that isnât present anywhere else in his design. I think changing the gears to something similar to his boots or his mask/headgear would create a more cohesive design(also the gears just look hard to move in)
These two characters are presented as individuals so their costumes donât have to match at all even though they are still seen as âconnectedâ because of the art style for the face, hair, and body.Â
In a group giving the outfits cohesive motifs is an easy way to present a strong team image! In Yuki Yuna is a Hero, the girls all have colored lines(usually princess seam placement), armor or fabric hip accents, covered arms, and similar flower shapes in their hair. The Aesthetic of each girl is strong in a monochrome signature color, but not over whelming as the black+white connects them even in color so they arenât out of place.Â
Speaking of color! if your characters are all similar looking (like same body for all of them) you can communicate their personality and aesthetic just with color! (only gonna talk about a few of the ponies) Pinkie Pie (the really pink one) is energetic and playful, so her color scheme is a variation of the primary colors(happy, child like), and have one of the more saturated colors(high energy, intense) of these characters in a large quantity. Apple Jack (the orange one) is a down to earth farm girl, and her color palette is accordingly, mostly earth tones, its also warm analogous colors, which makes her appear un-complicated and warm personality wise. the pop of red is a nice touch to add interest, but notice that its uses sparingly in her cutie mark and tail accessory. Rarity on the other hand is elegant and fussy, her high contrast scheme of white and dark blue/purples gives her more visual interest and is something that makes her appear more âcomplexâ in addition to the gradient thats included in her hair. the colors are also all cool colors, bringing to mind cool glass or water which both have connotations of grace and beauty.
however all the characters here are unified by their colors being on the pastel side, which is also important for a cohesive cast.
another, short, note on color; making the color/line/shading of your figure different from the background can help them stand out, this is used ESPECIALLY in childrenâs media, but can be applied to any illustration or animation as needed.
Color can also help your characters âreadâ quickly on screen, the powerpuff girls are a prime example, of having a distinct color blocking and silhouette. even the color blobs at the top and my crappy hand silhouettes STILL read as the characters despite being broken down into abstract elements. I also really enjoy the thick outline in the powerpuff girls, it really makes the characters pop to the foreground even though they have pretty simple designs and are often in a colorful setting.
Also, for a lot of animation, silhouette is INCREDIBLY important for your characters, some designers sketch silhouettes and then design the particulars its so important to nail the shape. These examples from Coraline are some of my favorites (though Laika wins in my heart every time no matter what lmao) because the simple shapes are SO CLEAR and indicative of the character, you literally donât need to have watched the movie to know these are each different characters with different personalities and roles.Â
silhouette can also help tell the story. In Kubo and the two strings (another Laika film) the above three characters are sisters. One has chosen to leave her home in the heavens to live on earth, and the other two stay in their roles as âheavenlyâ warriors. This is even shown through their designs, the two sisters are weighted on top and their cloaks donât even touch the ground, while the first woman has trailing, heavy sleeves, hair, and robes all grounding her and emphasizing her connection with the earth.
another example of shape/silhouette reflecting the story, In The Croods, the family of cavemen are for the most part very top heavy, with large torsos and arms, usually in a more hunched over position, while the newcomer, Guy, is bottom heavy with thin arms and stands more upright. In the plot, the family represents the old ways, the strength and rules that have helped them survive, they look like very stereotypical âcavemenâ, while Guy resembles the modern man, and appropriately is associated with new ideas and forward thinking.
MORE SHAPES, in DC super hero girls each girl has a distinct personality emulated by her shape language. Zatana is dramatic curves and edges, Super girl is hard, straight edges against curves, giving her a solid muscular shape. Wonder Woman, though also strong, is taller and leaner, lending to a confident leader type. Green Lantern is slim, her lines all flow into each other giving her a go with the flow look. Bumble Bee is, of course, tiny, but her boots and gauntlets add weight and strength to her otherwise small frame. Batgirl is lanky and has a lot of pointed style lines, reminding the viewer of a skinny cat (ironic what with cat woman i know) or weasel which mirrors her preferred âsneakyâ crime fighting style. (also yes this was just an excuse for me to gush abt how much i love the dcshg designs shut up)
so in my opinion, Cartoon Saloonâs The Secret of Kells is PERFECT in aesthetic, intention, and cohesion. Kells focuses very strongly on creating silhouette WITHIN the larger figure shape via color and line, most of the characters pictured here have no neck, the one who does, Brendan, is the main character and the use of negative space that cuts into his shape is used to draw attention to him. Kells is also very strongly inspired by Medieval Illuminated manuscripts (namely, the book of kells lmao). The characters still manage to stand out against outrageously detailed backgrounds via their simple shapes and strong color blocking.Â
Aisling, a secondary but very important character, is not human, and has a totally different shape language from the rest of the characters. She is thin and pointy, while most of the others are round or square. Aisling also has the most negative space making up her silhouette, compare the triangles made by her arms and legs in the above picture to the figures in the first image where everybodyâs body is self contained with no negative space. She is also very different color wise, very pale and cool colored, as opposed to the warm saturated colors of the human characters. (yes this was another excuse to gush abt one of my fave pieces of media deal with it)
hopefully that wasnât too rambley and actually helps? if yall have more specific design questions lemma know lol

Metallo
I wanted to talk about one of my favorite DC villains, a guy who Iâve always thought was incredibly cool. A guy who Iâve thought makes a really awesome contrast for Superman. A guy who has never been in stories that have utilized his potential in my eyes:
Letâs talk about Metallo.
Metalloâs Background
Heâs one of Supermanâs oldest Rogues, and also one of the Rogues who has gone through the most revamps. The Golden Age Superman fought a guy called Metalo aka George Grant who created a suit of armor made out of the strongest metal on Earth (something that would resurface in the Grant Morrison revamp during the New 52) and a super strength serum that made him Supermanâs physical equal. In an odd way he was an evil proto-Iron Man/Post Crisis Lex Luthor:
The John Corben take wouldnât show up until the 1950s, created by Robert Bernstein and Al Plastino. This was the foundation for the modern conception of Metallo:
Right off the bat Corben was positioned as an Anti-Superman, predating Bizarro who wouldnât show up until later. Corben worked as a journalist to cover up his real activities as a murderer and thief. An accident that nearly killed him and crippled his human body, forced him to accept a deal with a scientist to transfer his mind to a new artificial body. The scientist transferred his mind into an android body covered in synthetic bulletproof skin, gifting Corben with super strength. The synthetic skin idea would be used in Byrneâs revamp and the DCAU incarnation. He was initially powered by uranium, but was told he would need Kryptonite to fuel himself permanently. Corben would also act as a romantic rival for Clark via wooing Lois with his pretense of being Supermanâs secret identity.
Ultimately John Corben would die in his debut issue, after mistaking a museum prop for the actual Kryptonite he needed to power himself. I often wonder if the character might have been better off if he had not been killed off in his debut, similarly to how the Joker was saved from dying in his debut by editorial. There were many intriguing ideas present in Corbenâs creation: He was a romantic rival for Clark Kent, he used his journalism in a similar if villainous way as Superman did, and he was powered by the very thing that could kill Superman while still possessing enough raw strength to stand on equal terms with the Man of Steel. If they had kept him around, fleshed him out more, might Metallo have enjoyed more long term respect?
Regardless, Corbenâs death paved the way for the third Metallo: His brother Roger Corben.
Roger likewise had a lot of interesting ideas that would eventually get folded into the modern Metallo. He was not a petty thief, but had a personal vendetta with Superman over the death of his brother. Superman accidentally caused the very accident that crippled Roger, adding to the manâs feud. Roger was also a leader within the Skull organization, rather than the small time criminal his brother was. This Metalloâs design would form the basis for the Geoff Johns/Gary Frank revamp during Secret Origin, and I suspect the Johns conception of Metallo as a member of a wider organization and whose transformation was caused by Superman has itâs roots here.
Sadly the take on a more fleshed out Metallo would not last. The Roger Corben version of Metallo would meet his end with the rest of the Pre-Crisis Superman Rogues Gallery in the seminal Alan Moore story Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
Enter John Byrne:
During his Post-Crisis revamp of the Supermythos, Byrne returned to the John Corben take of a petty thief injured in an accident, who is rebuilt by a mad scientist Professor Vale. Byrne added his own twist though, with the scientist believing Superman to be the first scout in a full blown Kryptonian takeover of Earth, and specifically crafted Metallo to be an Anti-Superman weapon powered by Kryptonite. Metallo was to be humanityâs defense against the threat of Superman, an idea that would be revisited in Johnsâ and Morrisonâs revamps. Unfortunately petty thieves donât make for great heroes, and Metallo killed Vale, ultimately coming into conflict with Superman not over any desire to protect humanity, but to simply eliminate a thorn in his side.
This incarnation of Metallo has basically served as the basis for his appearance in outside media, with a design that blatantly draws on the popular Terminator films.
This version of Metallo would also acquire a variety of powers thanks to making a deal with Neron that included the ability to transform parts of his body into weapons, transfer his consciousness into any technological or mechanical device, and manipulate his size:
Personally Iâve always loved that powerset upgrade, and think itâs crucial it sticks. It let him kick the shit out of Superman AND Batman in Loeb Superman/Batman, which basically solidified for me that this dude was a badass you didnât want to mess with. Shame heâs never come close to matching that initial impression since.
The DCAU mostly used the Byrne revampâs take, but they did change a few aspects which would end up carrying over to the mainline version. Most important was the replacing of Vale with Lex Luthor as the mind behind Metalloâs creation, something that would be incorporated in both Johns and Morrisonâs later revamps.
One aspect that they introduced that didnât carry over, that was still utilized to great effectiveness in the show, was that Corbynâs transformation had robbed him of most physical sensation. He couldnât taste, smell, touch, all the little things that made us human, and that drove him nuts. Ultimately he would learn that Lex was responsible for what happened to him, and he would swear a grudge against both Lex and Superman. Malcom McDowell was a fantastic choice to play Metallo, and is still the guy IÂ âhearâ when I read Metalloâs dialogue.
Now we come to the guy who crafted the next big revamp of Metallo: Geoff Johns.
This version of Metallo incorporated a ton of aspects from the multiple revamps that had preceded it, in much the same way Secret Origin did to Superman as a whole, while also adding a few new twists that I consider essential to the character now.
Like the DCAU, Luthor was the one who transformed Corben into Metallo. Like the Roger Corben take, this John Corben was accidentally crippled in a fight with Superman that gave him a personal vendetta against the Man of Steel. Similar to Byrne, this Metallo was created to be an Anti-Superman weapon. Corben and Lois had had a brief romantic relationship, similar to the original debut of Corben. Johns even incorporated some of the Golden Age Metallo by having Corben suit up in a mech suit made of âMetalloâ, the strongest metal on Earth to fight Superman before the accident. Johns also added a key bit of lore that I love, that Corben served as a soldier under General Sam Lane, and became the manâs surrogate son, the child he always wanted as opposed to Lois and Lucy. Here Corben is motivated to fight Kal-El by a mix of xenophobia, need to impress his father figure, desire to impress Lois, and a simple dose of blood lust.
The last major revamp came from Grant Morrison during the New 52:
Morrison kept a lot of the Johns revamp: Corben was a soldier serving under Sam Lane, he had a brief romantic relationship with Lois, he was distrustful of Supermanâs heroics, and his transformation into Metallo was connected to Lex. However Corben was a much more sympathetic figure under Morrison than under Johns, genuinely believing Superman to be a threat, he volunteered to be merged with the Metal-0 superweapon (another callback to the original Metalo) to defend humanity, but Brainiac hijacked his cybernetics and turned him into a weapon.Â
While Metallo would get another visual revamp for Rebirth, posted in the first image, Corben has more or less stayed within the confines that Byrne/Johns/Morrison established.
How I would use Metallo
I said earlier that Metallo is a guy I loved that Iâve never thought has lived up to his potential. Heâs a villain with a lot of cool ideas, heâs a villain who has been continuously used by a lot of my favorite writers, but heâs never lived up to the Anti-Superman characterization thatâs baked into him. Too often heâs just been a glorified henchman, or a petty thug, rarely if ever challenging Superman except in the most basic physical sense. I think thatâs a great disservice to the ability of the character to be a much more important Rogue. That writers so often refuse to focus on him or any of the Rogues beyond Lex also hasnât done him any favors. Instead of creating countless new OCs that are tossed aside by the next writer, someone needs to come on board with a passion for revamping the classics.
A lot of Supermanâs Rogues suck not because they arenât cool or donât bring any interesting ideas, but because the ideas donât do a good job in contrasting with Supermanâs attributes. Metallo is a great example of this, look at all the interesting ideas creators have crafted around him, yet none of them have really been able to push those ideas as a way to explore and contrast Superman, so we get basic âMetallo tries to kill Superman, fails, Superman sends him back to jailâ stories. Thatâs a failure of creativity in my eyes. I think that by choosing from some of the revamps listed above, a better, cooler, more interesting Metallo can be crafted.
The basics as established by Byrne/Johns/Morrison are great! The essential ideas that should be incorporated from all of the revamps listed above are:
1. Corben needs to have a military background as in Johns/Morrison. The petty thief origin is too dull, thereâs nothing really to be mined there from a characterization standpoint. As a soldier Corben can serve as an interesting critique and contrast of Superman as an icon of America. The âAmerican Wayâ has always been a dicey add-on to the original âTruth and Justiceâ motto. Often itâs been used to cast Superman as an obedient stooge of the government, as he was in The Dark Knight Returns, a characterization that has dogged him ever since. I think Corben can serve as an interesting character to explore Supermanâs relationship with the American military-industrial complex. I would have Corben be what said complex wants Superman to be, at least in the beginning: A human WMD they can aim and fire, who will always follow orders no matter how reprehensible they are, who has a firm âAmerica Firstâ mindset. That way you can contrast the mainline Superman, and show that Superman is not that while also establishing what âThe American Wayâ means in his eyes. Or you can have Superman drop that aspect of his motto in-universe, out of disgust for how his government perverts it. Either option is fine with me, I didnât mind when Superman renounced his American citizenship.
2. If Lois often has to end up working with Clarkâs exes, whether itâs Lana, Diana, or whoever, I think itâs only fair that Clark has to end up facing down an ex from Loisâ past. Itâs important to show that Lois had a life before Clark showed up, and I think Corben is a good way to explore some of that. Heâs the possessive ex-boyfriend who doesnât respect Loisâ personal space and is convinced he can âwin her backâ via sheer determination. You can also compare and contrast the way Clark courted Lois, did Clark occasionally make the same pigheaded assumptions as Corben did? Corben debuted as a romantic rival for Superman, and I think that aspect still has merit. I also like his status as Samâs surrogate son, it adds for some nice tension with Clarkâs father-in-law that the guy he actually wanted to marry Lois was transformed into a weapon to kill the guy who ended up being his son-in-law.Â
3. Corben is a true believer in the threat Superman poses, and is willing to take on the transformation into Metallo to protect humanity. Itâs xenophobia yes, but with all the Evil Superman stories going around, itâs hard not to sympathize at least a little bit with Corbenâs viewpoint, which tie into a deeper attribute of Corbenâs I think needs to be brought up: Corben should be a sympathetic villain. I wouldnât make him a bloodthirsty psycho, Superman has plenty of those. Corben should have villainous valor, willing to tackle on whatever threats to humanity are out there, whether Superman or others. I would make Corben instead someone who has the genuine desire to protect humanity, but lacks Supermanâs concern for collateral damage. In that way you could contrast the twoâs brand of âheroicsâ, Supermanâs loyalty to humanity as a whole over one nation, and concern with protecting lives first and foremost, Corbenâs desire to protect humanityâs future for the âgreater goodâ even if it costs a few lives in the here and now and loyalty to America above all else.Â
4. I like the idea of Superman being inadvertently responsible for the accident that cripples Corben and mandates his transformation. It adds to his sympathy, helps justify why Superman might continue to believe Corben could find redemption (he wants Corben to change and also wants to find a way to earn Corbenâs forgiveness one day), and provides a good personal reason for why Corben would hate Superman, blaming Supes for his current state. I would also have him blame Sam and Lex as well, but he would subdue those resentments for as long as he remained working for the military. Only after he finally snaps would he target those two.
5. Finally I would keep the ability to shapeshift his body into weapons, and to manipulate technology. I would have Corben emulating Adam Jensen from Deus Ex, able to âhackâ tech around him for his own purpose, armed with a variety of weapons that make him a huge threat not just to Superman but to everyone. Finally I would get rid of the Kryptonite heart. Iâm tired of every battle with Metallo going the same way: He shows up, blasts Superman with kryptonite radiation, Superman lies on the ground gasping in pain, Metallo stands around gloating like a moron instead of finishing Supes off, Supes beats him by tricking him or by someone else intervening. I want to see Metallo as an Anti-Superman weapon realized beyond jus the Kryptonite. How about incorporating the DCAU versionâs lack of feeling, so that Metallo doesnât feel pain from Supermanâs blows or his powers? How about giving him an internal temperature controller, so he canât be melted by heat vision or frozen by arctic breath? How about an invisibility cloak that hides him from Supermanâs vision, sound mufflers that let him sneak up on Supes even with his hearing, basically go WILD with his Anti-Superman status, let us see a real fight between someone who can counter each of Supermanâs powers! You have Kryptonite Man and Lex for the villains who mainly make use of Kryptonite against Superman, I think Metallo should go in a different direction. Morrison making it so that âMetal-0âł was already powerful enough to hurt Superman is all the justification you need as to why he still poses a threat in my opinion.
Iâll go over the basic arc Iâd want to see him undergo and the kinds of stories I think heâs positioned to tell in another post.

Batman Movie Villains Ranked from Worst to Best
Recently, a YouTuber I follow by the name of Mr. Rogues released a list of Batman villains ranked from worst to best. I have nothing but the utmost of respect for Mr. Rogues as a content creator, but I took issue with his list because his long-standing biases were often the deciding factor in many of his rankings. So, I decided to do a list of my own.
Iâll be going over every Batman villain to appear in the movies, briefly analyzing their portrayals and ranking them on a scale of 1 to 5. To prevent the list from being too cluttered, Iâll be separating the villains by which movie series theyâre part of. Here we go!
Burton/Schumacher Tetralogy
Bane: Perhaps the only villain in this series Iâd call âbad.â The calculating tactician of the comics is nowhere to be found here; instead, heâs reduced to a monosyllabic, brain-dead stooge for the other villains. Overall, he does nothing that couldnât be done by a random henchman. 1/5
Two-Face: A deeply layered villain in the comics, Two-Face sadly gets upstaged by the other major rogue in the movie, but thatâs not to say he doesnât leave an impression. Tommy Lee Jones gives him a manic and mercurial demeanor that, combined with his colorful design, wouldnât be out of place in the Adam West series. The size and scope of his criminal organization make him a genuine threat, and thereâs something darkly fitting about Batmanâs former ally being responsible for the creation of Robin. 3/5
Poison Ivy: Mr. Rogues for some reason ranked her as the worst Batman movie villain of all time, and frankly, I donât see why. Like Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face, Uma Thurman gives this character a delightfully over-the-top demeanor that combines with a colorful, comic-booky ensemble to make for another great âwhat-if-this-character-appeared-in-the-Adam-West-seriesâ take. She does a good job juggling the differing facets of Ivyâs character: sheâs the put-upon cynic, the craven opportunist, the radical eco-terrorist, and the suave seductress all in one package. 3.5/5
The Penguin: Fuck the Razzies. Danny DeVito made this role his own and set the stage for the character for years to come. Heâs a bit of a departure, but a welcome one: far from the refined gentleman of crime Burgess Meredith portrayed, this Penguin is an animalistic thug warped by a lifetime of anger and hatred of the society who rejected him due to his deformities. His signature wardrobe, trick umbrellas, and Penguin gimmick are all there, but DeVito sells the role by showing amazing versatility: he can go from a comical and pitiable weirdo to a terrifying sociopath at the drop of a stovepipe hat. 4/5
Mr. Freeze: I honestly canât say much about this character that my mutual @wonderfulworldofmichaelford hasnât already. Arnold Schwarzenegger perfectly encapsulates both popular versions of this character: the flamboyant, pun-loving criminal genius from the Adam West series and the Animated Seriesâ traumatized scientist desperate to cure his loving wife of her terminal illness. Sure, the puns and hammy one-liners are what this version character is known for, but Ahnold definitely knows when to apply the brakes and give a greatly emotional performance as he tries desperately to cure his wife. 4.5/5
Max Shreck: Probably the only time youâll see a movie-exclusive character on this list, and deservedly so. Corrupt businessmen are dime-a-dozen in Batman stories, and most of them have little personality outside of being greedy scumbags who either get defeated by the hero or betrayed by the other villains. Shreck, however, is different. Not only does he have an eye-catching fashion sense on par with any of Batmanâs famous rogues, but Christopher Walken brings his signature manic intensity to the role, creating a character thatâs as wicked and sinister as he is cool and stylish. You totally buy that the general public sees him as the good guy. His warm relationship with his son is also a delight to watch. 4.5/5
Catwoman: Michelle Pfeiffer does a lot to really make the character her own. She gets a lot of genuinely badass moments, but underneath all of her coolness lies the undercurrent that sheâs a broken, traumatized character lashing out at the people who abused her and took her for granted. Even when she takes these ideals to unreasonable extremes, you never stop feeling like the retribution she brings on her enemies is at least a little warranted. Also, she has amazing romantic chemistry with Batman and her costume is fucking metal. 5/5
The Ridder: Itâs Jim Carrey. 5/5
The Joker: This role is perhaps the one that set the standard for future Jokers to follow: Jack Nicholsonâs humorous yet unnerving performance signaled to audiences early on that this would not be the goofy trickster of the Silver Age, but a different beast entirely. This Joker is a film noir gangster on crack: a disfigured mob hitman who quickly takes the entire criminal underworld by storm and unleashes his special brand of chaos and destruction across Gotham. Heâs an artist, a showman, a charismatic leader, and the man responsible for ruining Bruce Wayneâs life. 5/5
Christopher Nolan Trilogy
Talia al Ghul: You know that recent trend in Disney movies where a side character we thought was harmless and inconsequential turned out to have been the villain all along in a twist with no buildup or foreshadowing with the reveal happening too late in the movie for this character to really do anything cool or impressive before being unceremoniously defeated? Thatâs Talia. DKR is the weakest of the three Nolan films, and I feel like it wouldâve been much better received without this twist villain contrivedly shoehorned in. Also, while I could kinda forgive the trilogyâs whitewashing of other villains like Raâs al Ghul and Bane due to the talent their actors display, Marion Cotillard doesnât get a pass because she just doesnât have the charisma or screen presence needed to pull it off. 1/5
Victor Zsasz: While the idea of redefining Zsasz as an over enthusiastic mob hitman instead of a serial killer is very interesting, itâs ruined by the fact that he barely even appears in the movie and doesnât really do or say much of anything despite the buildup he gets. 1.5/5
Two-Face: Aaron Eckhart portrays Harvey Dent as a character of tragedy in a slightly different way than other tragic villains in superhero movies: heâs lashing out at a society he feels wronged him, but instead of being a lifelong outcast or put-upon loser, he was a handsome, successful crusader for the common good who lost everything he once held dear all in one fell swoop. You really feel for him even as he does horrible things. If I had to nitpick, though, I am slightly bothered by the fact that he plays some comic book movie cliches straight (i.e. they never call him by his alias and he dies at the end,) but itâs a solid performance overall. 3/5
Scarecrow: Iâll be upfront and admit that Iâm more than a little annoyed that certain facets of the character had been changed in the name of ârealismâ â once again, they never call him by his villain name and he never wears a comic-accurate costume â but other than that, I canât complain. Cillian Murphy plays the character with a smarmy, eerie charm that really makes his scenes stand out, his willingness to ally himself with other villains suits his character well, and the fact that he appears in three consecutive films with a different evil scheme in each really helps tie the movies together. 3.5/5
Catwoman: Much like other secondary villains in this trilogy, she really doesnât get a chance to shine compared to the main antagonist â and, once again, it pisses me off a little that they do the whole ânever refer to her as Catwoman but vaguely hint at itâ thing â but sheâs everything a modern Catwoman should be. Sheâs sly, manipulative, really holds her own in a fight, has great chemistry with Bruce Wayne... itâs all there. Itâs also great to see Anne Hathaway break away from her usual type casting to play a role this dynamic. 4/5
Raâs al Ghul: Heâs a character that was in desperate need of mainstream exposure, and by God thatâs what he got. Making him Bruce Wayneâs mentor adds a layer of personal tragedy to the climax where our hero has to stop the man who made him who he is from destroying Gotham with his admittedly brilliant plan. Add in a strong, captivating performance from Liam Neeson before we found out he was a racist asshole, and weâve got one hell of an overarching villain. 4.5/5
The Joker: Everybodyâs already discussed this version of the character to hell and back and likely will for years to come, so Iâll keep it very brief. Heâs funny, heâs badass, heâs terrifying, he has great dialogue, it sucks that Heath Ledger didnât live to see his performance reach the audience it got, and he basically makes the entire film. 5/5
Bane: Mr. Rogues actually ranked Bane higher than Joker on his list, and keeping it 100, I actually agree with him here. Finally, after decades of being dumbed down and misrepresented outside of comics, Bane is finally portrayed as the tactical genius from the comics. Tom Hardy plays Bane to perfection, being very believable as the peak of human physical and mental achievement, the man who broke Batman physically and emotionally. His design is iconic, his every line is quotable, his voice is weirdly fitting, and the memes are funny. 5/5
DC Extended Universe
KGBeast: Another point where I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Rogues. He is absolutely wasted in BVS, being nothing but a generic henchman for Lex Luthor. He doesnât wear his costume from the comics, heâs never referred to by his alias, he doesnât have his signature cybernetic enhancements, and he never does or says anything noteworthy. 1/5
The Joker: Ugh. I donât know whatâs worst: the tacky clothes, the stupid tattoos, the weird Richard Nixon impression that passes as his voice, the fact that promotional material hyped him up as a âbeautiful tragedyâ of a character even though heâs only in the movie for like 10 minutes and barely does anything, Jared Letoâs toxic edgelord behavior on set done with the flimsy pretense of âgetting into character,â or the fact that heâs just trying to copy Heath Ledger instead of making the role his own. 1/5
Victor Zsasz: Chris Messina proves undoubtedly that Zsasz CAN work as a secondary villain in a Batman movie. Heâs once again a mob assassin who enjoys his job a little too much, but unlike Batman Begins, he really gets time to shine. Heâs just as sadistic and depraved as in the comics, but he also has this disarming, casual demeanor about him like heâs just indulging a hobby instead of slicing innocent peopleâs faces off. His close friendship with his boss Black Mask adds some depth to the character as well. 3/5
Killer Croc: Sadly, he doesnât get much time in the spotlight, but heâs pretty cool nonetheless. The makeup and prosthetics used to create him look amazing, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbajeâs deep voice and imposing body language make him really stand out as an intimidating presence. Heâs often in the background, which fits his role as an outcast by choice and a man of few words, but whenever he does get focus, he has everyoneâs attention. It really would be a shame if this characterâs only appearance was in a mediocre schlock action movie, but he makes the most of what he has. 3.5/5
Deadshot: Another highlight of what would otherwise be a forgettable film, Deadshot is just as cool and competent as heâs always been in other media, but this portrayal stands out for one simple reason. Will Smith was a very odd choice to play the role, but it worked out for the best here because you get the sense he truly understands the characters. Heâs ruthless and pragmatic, but has just as enough charm and depth to make him likable. 4/5
Black Mask: I, like many, was skeptical when I saw early trailers depicting Roman Sionis as a foppish weirdo who doesnât wear his signature mask, but upon seeing the final movie, I really feel like he has the high ground over other DCEU villains. Ewan McGregor is endlessly captivating in the role, portraying him as a swaggering dandy who is nevertheless dangerous due to his boundless narcissism and explosive temper. Sure, those who deal in absolutes would be put off from the differences with his comic counterpart â who is far more cold and humorless â but from a certain point of view, this flamboyant take on the character isnât so much a departure as it is an addition to make him stand out while keeping his role the same. Black Mask has always been a middleman between the traditional mobsters of yesteryear and the colorful rogues that plague Gotham today, and this portrayal perfectly encapsulates that. He works in the shadows, but isnât afraid to get his hands dirty; he flies off the handle and gets reckless at times, but thereâs no question that the whole operation was his idea. 5/5
Harley Quinn: Margot Robbie owns this role. Sheâs unbelievably dazzling as a badass, funny, sexy antihero who deals greatly with tragedy and proves that thereâs always been more to her than her initial role as the Jokerâs sidekick. Again, not much to say, but sheâs almost perfect. 5/5

Living in Lockdown with You
Whatâs that saying about writing indulgent fluff if you donât have the inspiration to write? Yeah...this domestic fluff three-parter has been nagging at me since I was in extreme lockdown a month ago and wondered how Percy and Annabeth would handle a similar situation. Featuring clingy and sleepy Percabeth and working from home. Enjoy.Â
*** Annabeth stared at the screen blearily, trying desperately to focus on the videoconference in front of her. As a demigod, focusing was hard for her at the best of times, and this switch to everything online certainly wasnât helping. She was all too aware of her face in the lower corner of her screen, wishing her boss hadnât insisted they leave their cameras on for this presentation. Blinking and squaring her shoulders, she was just about to try again to tune into the discussion of a new architectural technique when a mug floated out of the corner of her vision.Â
She looked up to see Percy offering her the steaming mug with a sympathetic smile. She took it gratefully, cupping it in between her hands and letting the warmth revitalize her.Â
Thank you, she mouthed, then remembered her mic was off. âThank you,â she repeated out loud, needing something real to ground her to this moment.Â
âOf course,â he nodded, and turned to give her space to focus.Â
âWait,â she put the mug on the table and caught his hand, reveling in the familiar feel of his hand in hers. âCan you stay just a few minutes?âÂ
He smiled again, that troublemaker but supportive smile that had eased its way into her heart so long ago.Â
âOf course,â he repeated, making himself comfortable on a nearby chair.Â
She expected him to start playing on his phone as she went back to focusing on the presenter, so he caught her off guard a few minutes later when he posed an insightful question about what the presenter was saying. As she answered, pulling together facts from earlier in the presentation and one of her college classes, she realized that this weird combination of stimulation, from the hot liquid warming her up inside and his hand in hers, to the presenterâs voice and Percyâs questions, was helping her focus better than she had all day. She squeezed his hand briefly in his thanks, and he gave her a warm look before asking another question.Â
Gods, he was so smart.Â
With Percy peppering occasional questions throughout, she was able to not only breeze through the rest of the lecture, but also pose several intelligent questions when it came to the follow-up meeting. Finally, the meeting concluded, everyone said goodbye, and she signed off.Â
She sagged back in her chair in relief. âOh my gods, thank you. You were a lifesaver.â She hadnât meant to steal him for the whole meeting, and she was sure he had other things he was probably supposed to be working on, but she was so grateful and he was so willing that she decided to feel appreciative rather than guilty.Â
He shrugged nonchalantly. âIt was actually pretty interesting. Iâve listened to you rant about architecture enough over the years that at least most of the words made sense.âÂ
Too tired to properly express her emotions of gratitude and how smart and amazing he was even if he didnât always see himself that way, she raised his hand to her mouth and kissed it softly. âYouâre amazing, thank you.âÂ
His smile was soft and a little bashful, but all he said was, âwhat are you thinking for supper? Iâm not sure we have enough leftovers for a full meal.â
Her brain switched gears to food, and they started brainstorming. With stretching and groaning, they rose and headed to the kitchen, ready to tackle this new challenge as a team.Â
***
A couple days later, she found herself going to bed at a decent hour for once (quarantine and distance work had been messing with her already messed up sleep schedule). When she crawled under the covers, however, Percy was still seated in bed, staring intently at his laptop (their apartment was really tiny--what can you do against New York apartment prices?-- and didnât have much in the way of living space).Â
âAre you--â she yawned, âalmost done?â
âHuh? Oh, I mean, I think so? I can move elsewhere if you want.âÂ
She shook her head sleepily, aligning her body so she could curl around him. âItâs okay. Just dim your monitor please.âÂ
He nodded absent-mindedly, focus already returning to his work as he complied.Â
She must have drifted off because she woke disoriented to find Percy still tapping away on his laptop. âHey.â She breathed, adjusting her position to lean against him, stretching out a crick in her arm, âwhat time is it?âÂ
âHm? Oh, I guess itâs 2:30.â He blinked and muttered, âwhen did that happen?â
âPercy,â she was having trouble keeping her eyes open, âyou should head to bed.âÂ
âI know, I know, Iâm just really close to finishing.âÂ
âYou said that several hours ago.â If she wasnât careful, she was going to fall asleep and drool on his shirt.
He kept typing, and she wasnât sure if heâd heard her.Â
âPerce? Are you actually close to a stopping point? Cause if you save it for tomorrow and get some sleep now, youâll probably do better work.âÂ
The computer noises stopped, and she felt him chuckle under her cheek. âNow where have I heard those words before?âÂ
She grinned sleepily, âNot sure. I think some wise guy said it a couple times.âÂ
âWise guy, huh?âÂ
She could picture the smile on his face, but merely hummed in agreement and snuggled further into his side.Â
âOkay, okay.â There was a pause before he said, âfor real this time, I found a good stopping point, just give me a few minutes.âÂ
âOkay,â she was drifting off again.Â
True to his word, she felt him shift several minutes later, and suddenly the dim light vanished. A tension she hadnât even realized she was holding released. She only grumbled slightly as he gently slipped out from under her grasp, and sooner than she expected, he was back under the covers, drawing her into his chest.Â
âLove you,â she murmured. âSleep tight.âÂ
She felt a laugh rumble through his chest as he bent to kiss her forehead. âYou too, Annabeth. Love you.âÂ
***
Her laptop was lifted from her lap mid-sentence and a weight settled in its place. âWhat?â She looked down to find Percy sprawled across the bed between her legs, head pillowed in his arms on her lap.
âSleepy,â he muttered, shifting to get comfortable.Â
âI wonder why,â she responded affectionately, holding her laptop in one hand and carding her fingers through his hair with the other.Â
âHad to-â he yawned, âfinish the project.âÂ
âAnd you did, so Iâd say youâve earned your rest.â His recent tiredness put her in mind of the months after heâd taken the Achillesâ Curse when heâd fall asleep anywhere and everywhere, often in this very same position.Â
Of course, then, she didnât usually have a computer and a report to finish.Â
âHey,â she gently tapped the computer on his head. âWhat am I supposed to do with this?â
âI dunno,â he mumbled. âThat works.âÂ
âThis works?â She repeated, skeptically resting her laptop on his head.Â
âSure.âÂ
Deciding to play along, she tried to continue typing. âHm, Iâve determined that your head is not a sufficiently flat surface.âÂ
She felt him shrug against her legs. âNot for lack of trying.âÂ
âI donât think Iâm advocating for more monsters to bash you in the head.â She moved her laptop to his back instead. âIâm fond of your skull as it is.âÂ
âOh yeah?âÂ
âYeah,â she smiled, running her hand through his hair again, tracing the shape of his head. âNow stop distracting me.âÂ
âSure thing, babe.âÂ
Smiling and rolling her eyes, she turned back to her report in the dyslexia-supportive program one of her siblings had designed. Percyâs back was much more stable than his head, and she couldnât say she didnât appreciate the company.Â
She finished a rough draft and saved it, deciding to look it over for errors and edits later. As she closed the report, her background came into view. It was her and Percy during their visit to Washington DC the year before. Theyâd planned a large group trip with Grover and the rest of the seven to support Piperâs recent appointment. A lot of them had road tripped down together, and spent hours at the Smithsonian Museums. It had been the last time all of them had been together, and now, with lockdown, the memories were even more precious. Her heart clenched, and she was immensely grateful for Percy, even if he was becoming hot and heavy.Â
âWe should have a group call with the others soon.âÂ
He stirred; she honestly hadnât been sure he was still conscious. âWe have one the day after tomorrow. Hazel put it in the group chat, and you already agreed.â
âOh yeah.â With the stress of lockdown and working from home, details were a little hazy sometimes. âThatâs good then. Are we calling your mom any time soon?â
âMaybe tonight? Paulâs busy with teaching online, and Momâs been busy with her book and trying to homeschool Estelle. She said sheâd let me know.âÂ
âCool,â she idly traced patterns on his back. âGotta say Iâm so grateful for modern technology right now.âÂ
He snorted, âAnd that we can use it now.âÂ
âGods, yeah.â A combined effort on the part of some Hephaestus kids, Athena kids, and a remarkably tech savvy Ares kid had led to a spell/app combo that meant monsters could no longer trace demigods through their technology. Annabeth had to admit that a smartphone had been a lifesaver a number of times, both in college and in monster fighting.Â
âSo, what do you want to do for this rest of the day? Especially now that you got that project out of the way?âÂ
âSleep.âÂ
She tugged at his hair, âyou can sleep later, câmon.âÂ
âYou can sleep with me,â he suggested, and she caught his mischievous look.Â
âIâm not tired,â she stuck out her tongue. âDo you wanna watch something? Weâre nearly caught up on, uh, that one show.âÂ
He named it. âThat one?âÂ
Snapping her fingers, she nodded decisively as if sheâd had the name all the time. He just gave her that teasing smile. âYeah, that one. Wanna watch that?âÂ
With an overly dramatic sigh, he crawled off her. âSure.â He kissed her cheek as he settled into her side. âPopcorn?âÂ
âWhy not?â She smiled at him, âbut you have to salt it.âÂ
âI think I can agree with that,â he grinned at her and pulled her laptop to him so he could pull up the show.Â
She plodded to the kitchen (well, kitchenette), and returned a few minutes later with only slightly burnt popcorn and a salt shaker for Percy to wield. As she curled up beside him, and the familiar title song played, Annabeth felt the deep-seated contentment that no matter what crazy things were happening in the world right now, no matter how helpless and scared she felt, at least she had her something permanent with Percy.Â
