The 'apple library' with a lost world on its limbs
The explosion of crisp, commercial apple varieties in the last century doomed many other breeds into obscurity. But in a field in Kent in the UK, some of them live on.
A few miles from the sea in Kent in the south of England, hedges of hazel, ivy and briar stand like ramparts separating kingdoms of fruit.
In one field are quinces, dense as golden anvils. Nearby are grey medlars, hard and sour. Pears gleam through red leaves. But the real stars are the apples – more than 4,000 trees, of more than 2,000 varieties. Their fruit clusters along wand-like branches and carpets the ground in a fragrant layer of softly rotting flesh. They smell of a thousand warm afternoons spent snacking in a hammock or up a tree. I kneel under the branches of a particularly laden tree to find the label with the name. It reads, aptly: "Weight."
This is the United Kingdom's National Fruit Collection, a living repository of apples once grown in the British Isles, as well as other fruit. It is not the only apple library out there. The USDA's Plant Genetic Resources Unit in Geneva, New York, and New Zealand's Plant & Food Research's collection, among others, host thousands of apple varieties Rea more

I want to do a satire
AITA for killing a man on the train to New York
I (23M) was on a train from DC to Boston, I had prepared and everything, I had brought books, downloaded music to my phone, brought my headphones and even obtained a DVD player. I was having a perfect trip, listening to music in my headphones and reading my mystery novels when suddenly at the stop in Philadelphia I was oh so rudely interrupted by a young man, (late 20s, M) he said that he couldn't find a seat and that he would like to sit in the seat next to me. Being the reasonable man that I am, I got up and accommodated him, that was just basic decency of course. But then about 10 minutes later my book reading was once again interrupted as I heard a most awful noise. It was the man sitting next to me, his handsome face illuminated by a blue light, he was watching internet videos at max volume without any headphones. Immediately I was thrown into a blind rage, I pulled a rock out of my bag, threw it against the window, breaking it into pieces, grabbed my seat neighbor, lifted him up over my head and threw him out the window. It wasn't for several minutes that I realized what I did

Just some notes I downloaded Lego DC super-villains purely to get Music Meister, but I got the chance to check something I've been thinking about and noticed a few other things.
The purple-green combo or rather, the ratio between colors in that range. The weird thing about purple and green is they're each other's accent colors. They balance each other out. Have you ever noticed how often Joker and Riddler stand next to each other in the comics? They're doing it because they balance each other out, purple-green, green-purple. Personally, I associate purple with chaos and power. Viciousness, royalty/high class and a generally a "beyond all others" vibe.
Green is in general cerebral, the color of the mind, but I think it can vary depending on the villain. Joker and Riddler has basically made it mean 'danger'. Alienness, greed, jealousy. An inability to connect to others, which is where green starts to harmonize with purple. I know 4 who have this combo: Joker, Riddler, Lex and Music Meister.
Music Meister:
His nodes look almost yellow here but they're basically bright green, it's the light. I should note his green color isn't the same as Joker, Riddler and Lex's. He's purple dominant here and his accent color is slipping into green. I find him really freakishly interesting because in the comics he's raided Riddler's wardrobe and changed his accent color to red. (I've seen him switch back to his other colors, which is unusual.)
Notes: Music Meister is really lively, like really. Run cycle: Spinning and throwing his arms around. Unlike Riddler and Joker, Meister doesn't seem to have a sprint animation. Sneaking cycle: He does sneak, but you can tell he and the word "quiet" have never been in the same room. I swear he'd vibrate if he was standing still. Walking cycle:
Joker:
Purple-green, it's leaning towards purple dominant here, but it's close to be balanced? His colours are actually woven together. Notes: Joker comes off as being weirdly subdued next to Meister and Riddler is basically running circles around him. Run cycle: He just runs and then sprints. Sneaking cycle: Joker has no sneaking cycle. He just walks slower. Walking cycle: He walks menacingly.
Riddler: (Rare picture of him STANDING STILL)
Green-purple, green being dominant. Notes: This man wants your attention SO BADLY. He dances constantly. Run cycle: Normal run where he spins his cane followed by sprinting. Sneaking cycle: Actually sneaks. (I think he's actually stomping his feet because he really wants you to look at him.) Walking cycle: He prances. Attention, please give it to him.
Lex:
I'd say he's green dominant, but like with Joker, it's close to being balanced. Only they aren't woven into each other. I feel like I'm taking a brick to the face when I look at him. Notes of interest: Lex moves the least. He's extremely smug. Run cycle: He moves with the jets in his shoes. Smugly. Sneaking cycle: Lex has no sneaking cycle. He just walks slower, extremely smugly. Walking cycle: He walks extremely smugly.

Thirst Trap 🫦
(Unedited Aeon Drabble)
Ada scrolled on her SAT phone crouched in her sniper's nest. She'd completed her job and waited for the all clear to meet at the rendezvous point. With the amount of time she had on her hands, she found a way to download tiktok.
The first clips made her head hurt. Someone screaming into the camera, a cat meowing something that sounded like human speech, a catchy flashy edit of some movie that just came out, and then he showed up.
Her finger hovered over the screen. She attempted to keep the corners of her mouth from lifting, but how could she not?
"You have quite a few admirers, handsome," she said. The clip set to music looped on Leon S. Kennedy as he walked beside the president to a podium.
She followed the rabbit hole to a sensual edit set to a slowed song. Ada whistled low. Spain wasn't long ago and she'd noticed his physical changes then. It appeared that he'd kept up with his physique.
Ada admired the work they did to present his best features, and he had many. She called him handsome because she meant it. He'd always been beautiful.
She swiped again. Some girls giggling out front of the White House during an Easter event. Leon adjusted the collar of his shirt, clearly uncomfortable. The clips slowed as he unbuttoned his coat.
Ada stopped on an edit of Leon at some other event in his combat gear, the way she always remembered him. But what kept her there was the circles beneath his eyes, the fresh bandage around his arm. The world clearly weighed heavy on his noble shoulders.
"We'll never be free of this, huh, Leon?" Always another lab, another outbreak, another job. And they'd be there. She read some comments about his appearance, the way the commenter would ravage him, and the occasional insult. Leon was an object to them. And they'd never know what he did.
A call came in over her phone and she pressed to answer.
"You are free to move to the rendezvous point," the messenger said and hung up. Ada closed the app and picked up her sniper. The evening was dimmer than usual with the light patter of rain.
She couldn't get her mind off his face. She had some time off between jobs after this one. Maybe she would make a visit. Maybe she wouldn't. Her presence didn't feel like a pick-me-up for him.
The beating wings of the chopper took her out of her growing thoughts, and she stepped inside. The trip took some time and she had her eyes on the horizon. What was one little detour? Ada tapped the mic on her headset to speak to the pilot.
"How long would it take to get to DC from here?"

Preview - Deluxe Jet Set Radio (aka De La Jet Set Radio) on Game Players DC Vol.2 (Video Game Magazine) (Hong Kong, 2000)
Translation in English:
Publisher/Manufacturer: SEGA
Game Type: ACT
Release Date: January 1st (2001)
Price: 5800 Yen
Capacity: GD-ROM
Memory: Undecided
Excellent grades, promoted to the international stage
For the first time in game history, JET SET RADIO combines 3D background and 2D animation to create a fantasy 3D world that is both real and imaginative. The game is still highly praised since it was launched, and the game production is extremely good. Unfortunately, the large capacity of JET SET RADIO is only exchanged for a few game stages. This time, the enhanced release increases the number of versions and modes, improves the game's durability, and also retains the original stage, making the game fresher and more playable.
Two new foreign stages have been added to the game. The new story takes place in the bustling foreign metropolises "BATAM STREET" and "GRIND CITY".
"BATAM STREET" is a smoky street with overhead trams, grocery stores connected to every household, dilapidated and towering old buildings, and parks where street children gather, etc. The structure of the city street is complex and very three-dimensional.
BATAM STREET Map
GRIND CITY Map
JET SET RADIO with the feeling of a new type of 3D game is back. The New Year’s Day in the Western calendar is dressed up to celebrate the early years with everyone. The shape has been carefully remodeled and re-dressed to surprise everyone again. The game has been greatly enhanced, the new stage has entered foreign countries, and you can meet like-minded "confidantes".
Puppies are crazy too! Let's JET SET RADIO!!
Simultaneously with the original story, while the Japanese police and JET SET RADIO members of the two factions of good and evil are intriguing, the United States is also experiencing horrific terrorist assassinations. JET SET RADIO continues the last episode of Japan's righteous men, and American fanatics also come to maintain justice, while expressing their own music style and smashing the evil organization "Golden Rhinos".
In the new stage, players can use the new character "Bozi (Pots)" to make trouble on the streets and graffiti everywhere. Bozi (Pots) was originally the pet dog of the character GG in the last episode, an ordinary puppy, but unfortunately he was transformed by the character NOISE TANK in the last episode, and became a part of JET SET RADIO by accident. Undisclosed role.
New character "Bozi (Pots)"
New Year's Gift Giveaway
Unfortunately DELUXE JET SET RADIO is another set of D-DIRECT exclusive game, interested readers may have to work hard to buy such an excellent game, but it is definitely worth the money. The game comes with a precious shirt worn by the character "GG", which is unique and only one of its kind. Work hard, everyone! If you want to be the first to see the game, you may want to go to SEGA's official web site to download the game's highlights, the web site is as follows:http://jet.dricas.ne.jp/dx_jet_image/mpg/de_la.mpg

Hi! So I have a rambling explanation that’s going to lead into a genuine question about making a website somewhat like a03 or finding alternatives to a site I will mention (it’s not a03 don’t worry)
I am a non/disney editor, crossover artist, amv maker and deep faker and any other term for “make videos of characters in canon or au type scenarios to music”. I’m also a fanficcer. And I remember when being wary of Anne Rice and Archie Comics and DC was a thing. A teacher, to cover his ass for an assignment of mine, taught me how to write an apology letter to a company on the offhand my hand written basically Batman fanfiction, made it’s way online or was heard about. I was in the tail end right before A03 but I am extremely grateful that the site exists. Okay. So now I need to talk about the Owl House. In season three episode special one, Luz Noceda makes an amv coming out to her mom.
Editor friends in a private discord were both happy and worried. Luz is one of us….but also Disney knows about us, to some level. Nothings happened I’ve just been stewing and I’m just worried something might hit the fan for the community given many of us use Disney media (hard not to when 80% of things put out is by them) So I’m asking how one would make a platform like A03 but for video media. Or if there’s things you know like that. YouTube is getting more and more difficult for anyone nowadays too.
Again, nothings really happened yet, I just can’t get it out of my head
--
Video is worlds harder than text, but you know that.
There are a couple of approaches here: First, more is more. The more sites you have your stuff on, the smaller the chance that Disney can nuke all of them. Second, if you're not just using youtube and getting good at playing the algorithm, you need some way for people to find you or to keep track of all your alternate hosting.
Vidders of the oldschool sort have taken to using AO3. It doesn't have native hosting, of course, but it provides a stable URL and useful fandom-based tagging without algorithm bullshit. It's also a decent way to get vids out there if you only have download links and no streaming (though, of course, that means fewer views). You can embed a bunch of different copies of the same thing in the same work.
I don't know of a ton of fannish attempts at video hosting that are open to everyone. The only person I can think of who's heavily working on that is the guy behind Vidders.net who has a few different projects going.
For other hosting options, I'd see what AO3 currently has whitelisted for embedding. Two obvious ones are Critical Commons and Archive.org.
--
Broadly, yes, fanvids and AMVs have been subject to even more disastrous mass deletions than fanfic has, and far fewer of them have been saved by other fans because video files are huge.
Oldschool AMVs in the strict sense (i.e. Japanese anime and not Disney) are catalogued and sometimes hosted on animemusicvideos.org. Oldschool Media Fandom has some vidding archivists, and really old stuff was released on tape and then disc, and people still have their copies of those. But online-only fannish video stuff from the 00s and 10s has massive gaps in the historical record already.
Disney is quiescent now, but they haven't always been, and neither have other rights holders. Worse, a bunch of hosts vidders liked just up and deleted their entire sites, wiping out eras of videos and commentary.
Your stuff is in less danger than it would have been 10 years ago, as far as anyone can tell, but video is always in massive danger of disappearing.
--
If you actually succeed at video!AO3, more power to you! I'm just skeptical that you'll be up to the technical and financial challenge if you don't already know more than you currently do, you know?
Hosting video has, among other problems, the issue that people trading actual abuse materials will upload their videos to your service. Hosts often play whackamole with illegal and traumatizing content. I've known people whose jobs exposed them to this shit, and they were... not okay.
I guess you could make things slightly easier on yourself if you restricted video to cartoons only, but then you'd have the same issues amvs.org does where people who start as one kind of editor start working with other footage and keep trying to upload the wrong thing.
It's often not really viable to host unless you make everyone pay and/or you're authorizing a few dozen accounts of people you've vetted, not running a service just anyone can sign up for. Hosting a hundred videos for friends that you have reviewed and know to be fanvids/amvs is a lot easier than hosting enough stuff that you can't personally review it all.
If you or anyone else is interested in trying to start a site, I'd go check out the various writings by Denise (who runs Dreamwidth). She has some twitter threads and posts on enforcement and running a platform. I remember she talked about the tech people use to detect CSAM from known law enforcement databases.
I don't want to be a downer here, but there are serious legal implications to being the actual host as opposed to just running a discord or something on someone else's platform and reporting some fucker if they try to post illegal shit.
--
If I were you, I'd get my buddies together, embed all our works on AO3, and then maybe make a collection or tagging standards so we could find each other's stuff.
For hosting, I'd add the Internet Archive, Vimeo, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. to Youtube and do a periodic audit of AO3 works to make sure links were still working.
AO3 already has a lot of tags that have been made filterable, like Fanvids, AMV, Video Format: Streaming, etc.

Weird DnD character idea:
A kid named Blake gets transported to this magical world where he is picked up by a party to act as a bard due to his young appearance. Blake has no musical talent, and instead opts to plays music from his iPod Nano, making all of his spells and moves reliant on what music he has downloaded as there is no internet.
Blake: “I wish to use Thunderclap”
*Thunderstruck by AC/DC starts blasting out of the tiny shitty speakers and a giant hand electricity flies out*
Blake: “Im going to try and intimidate the guard and use the fear spell”
*rolls nat1*
DM “you hit play on your iPod, A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton begins to start and the guard falls over pointing and laughing”

Hurting Angel - Chapter One 🥰
Crowley x reader (also known as Bri)
Chapter One 🐞
A/N: Hey my bugsies, so this was requested by a beautiful anonymous bugsie, I sure do hope y'all are going to enjoy this series...🥰💓
Side Note: Let me know what y'all think, also thank you all for the support - also all my stories can be found on watpad aswell.🥹🤭
Warnings: Blood, thriller, horror, sarcasm, mentioning of guns, if there's anything else, let me know... Much love "Nesca" 🐞
Go on a blind date they said, it'll be fun they said. You need to get out more Bri, they said. " Remind me again why I agreed to download the stupid dating app, signing up for it in the first place was crazy, damn freaking nuts. "
Stirring the drink at the bar, not really feeling like drinking, but hey its a bar, its what your supposed to do right!
The bartender basically screaming over the loud music, 'you okay miss?'
"Yeah of course never been better, love getting stood up," her lips pursed
The barman didn't quite know how to answer that, so he just walked further down to the other end.
Irritated about the fact you got stood up and that it bothers you a tiny bit, you pull out your phone, texting the babysitter, asking if everything is still alright, with Lainey.
The text came through, "Little Lainey is watching my little pony and she already had her dinner, enjoy yourself a bit darling" Mrs Anderson is the only person she trusts with Lainey. Biting her lip, maybe I should stay a little longer, just enjoy myself for awhile, unwind, the story about the biggest crime syndicate is really taking over my damn life, I'm this close, mimicking with her index finger and thumb, to uncovering the face behind the leader, his code name "The Devil" a crooked smile on her lips, its such a stupid nickname, like are the people supposed to be immediate, well like yeah, here comes the little red man, with his pointy tail and ears, with his little pitch fork, all I know for sure is his name is Crowley, and he goes by the devil, as for how he looks, I'll find that out very soon, well as soon as my source comes through anyway.
''Drinking alone and looking as beautiful as you, is just a crime'' the silvery voice says, breaking her out of her deep thoughts. Turning her head to the barstool next to hers. ''Oh really? last time I checked there's a lot worse crimes in this world'', sounding a little more snarky than she intended. The man with his neatly combed over blonde hair and blue eyes laughs, ''not in the mood for company?''
''In all honesty, not if your going to tell me cheesy pick up lines all night'' she sighed.
''Your safe, I promise, that was my last, you have my word'' he laughed
''Okay good! Then your more than welcome to join me,'' sounding inviting
The man, asks for the bartender to give them two more, of whatever she's having. After getting your drinks, the two of you talked, not really exchanging names, merely about how noisy it is, and the fact that, they both got stood up. Still laughing and having fun, some guy bumps into your chair, letting your handbag fall to the ground. ''Hey! Look where you going buddy'' she warned. The guy just gestures a sorry and keeps on stumbling further.
''This place is getting to crowded, I'm going to head home, as soon as I finish the last few sips'', she expressed
''Leave now? We are just getting to know each other'', his silvery voice, sounded so smooth.
''Biting her lip, yes thank you for the nice chat'' getting up, to only fall back again, holding her head in her hand, "oh wow, how is it possible that I feel so lightheaded, I had two drinks," everything is spinning, my body feels so numb, so outside of myself. Fumbling through her handbag, trying to take her phone. Hearing the bartender say something, the man next to her, sounded so disembodied when he answered, looks like she had a bit to much to drink, I'll take her home, taking ahold of her arm, let's get you home!
Something is wrong, has she been drugged? Trying to get her arms to function to push him away, so that she can get out of his grip, but her body feels weak, her muscles is losing all functionality, as for her eyelids it feels as heavy as stone, she whispers a shaky "no" before everything goes. dark.
Her eyes starting to slightly open, "w..what happened", she mumble's. Glancing over the room, to see if she recognises anything, her view is hazy "where's the man that took her" hearing the dripping sound of water, "it's freezing" breathing heavily, excruciating pain shuttering throughout her body, feeling still slightly numb, tracing her fingers over her abdomen area, her hands trembling when she feels a long incision, and the thread of a wound being closed up, unknowingly tugs at the pointy strand, "what the hell" she gasped.
Forcing herself to see more clearly, glancing down, shaking uncontrollable, her eyes widening, her body is laying in a bathtub covered with ice, some crystal clear, others stained with red, most likely from the blood, still seeping through her left side. "My side its sliced open" she yelled, as if she only realized that what she felt previously was her own body.
Searching across the bathroom, for anything other than the dripping sound and the shaking of her own body, she grabs ahold of the bathtub, her fingers a discoloration of blueish-white, forcing her body over the edge, plumping to the ground, "dammit" she exclaims. Dragging herself across the floor, moaning and whimpering in pain.
Opening the wooden door slowly to peek through, to see if anyone is stil there keeping watch, sighing in relief, "the coast is clear. " Crawling to the edge of the bed, trying to get up, still shaking and weak, she forces herself up, rolling over, taking in a deep breath, her heart is beating rapidly, her throat dry, her voice sounding hoarse. "I need to get to a phone, hospital something"
Grabbing a blanket to wrap up her shaking body, that's only covered in a black sports bra and her black shorts, making her way to a shaky stance. Holding onto whatever she can find as she stumbles out of the room. The bright streetlights making her eyes burn, glaring down the stairs," really the least they could do is butcher me on ground level" irritation in her painstaking voice.
Dragging one foot across the other, down the steel staircase. Searching the parking lot for a vehicle or help of some sort. There in the corner, an old chevy Camaro, "almost there" she sighs.
Pulling the door, praying it isn't locked, "yes, its open" a half smile forming on her tired face. Hoping the keys are still inside, she gets in. "Dammit, no keys, why would it be easy, nothing is every easy" her voice low and weak.
Pulling the ignition with every last bit of strength she has, "need something to strip the plastic covered wires" peeking through the car, in the window hangs a beer opener, reaching for it, taking it to the wires, pulling it across the starter wire, striping the plastic about 1'3 inches back, then doing the same with the battery wire, touching the two ends together, something she learned when she was a teenager, "Come on baby, come, there you go, that's a girl" she whined.
Throwing it in drive, and stepping on the gas, she drives off, leaving a man in her rear view window chasing after her.
Looking at the street signs, trying to read it, but its all a blur, turning down the first left she can find, looks like a residential area, "maybe I can get some help here" she utters desperately.
Feeling the blood rolling down her side onto her thighs, her breathing more shallow and her eyes heavy, knowing she needs help quick! Real quick! Making her foot heavy on the gas, not taking the turn in consideration, she crashes into a wall, making her head jolt to the steering wheel, glancing over the shattered windscreen, at two men with weapons, running towards her, she looses consciousness.

Anonymous asked:
Hullo, hope you're doing well and enjoying the comeback and the albums 🤩🤩 looking forward to when they'll show up in roulette!
Pls feel free to ignore as this may be a little dumb, but I figured you might know?
From what I can vaguely understand from Wiki and from your past response, can I assume TV broadcast files are usually .ts files? And that it's not the file type that dictates the "quality," but rather the encoding?
There's a Twitter account (😭 I forgot which, it's lost on my timeline now) that occasionally posts .ts files of DC's music show performances, the most recent file being :
240718.MnetJP.엠카운트다운.드림캐쳐.JUSTICE.H264.AAC.1080i-AbySSS.ts
Going off the name and what you've mentioned before about "best quality" where 1080i h264 is better than Youtube, would this file probably be better than downloading the YT video of the same performance?
Fake ask again to strip links because I'm really good at being unnecessarily paranoid but YES! I am having a blast. Siyeon’s absence is felt but it's nice to see her still pop up in some of the YouTube show performances. Handong is totally killing her parts too though so it's been fun seeing that 😁
On the question of quality:
(Minor point of clarity: the encoding is an aspect which determines the quality but not the only one. The simplest quality measure is probably taking into account encoding AND bitrate, where bitrate is the amount of data being displayed per second and encoding is how efficiently it's compressed. Technically the best quality is the highest possible bitrate with zero compression but that's just not feasible, so this is where encodings come in. Newer encodings are, as a rule of thumb, better quality than older ones at "sensible" bitrates, but, as in the case of YouTube for example, a much lower bitrate can make a newer encoding look much worse than an older one. That's why in my quality ranking YouTube was beneath MPEG2 - YouTube is almost all h264 for 1080p, which is newer than MPEG2, but the bitrates drag the quality down the drain.)
Generally 1080i recordings, in their "rawest" form, are MPEG-TS (.ts) files, yeah. 4k are more commonly posted in MP4 though I've found. I'm speculating here based off my own experiences (I haven't ever asked anyone who does this if this is the true reason) but I think that's because MPEG-TS just isn’t efficient enough at high bitrates to provide a very pleasant viewing experience. Let me demonstrate using a convoluted metaphor:
Say you’re a marble vendor and you are looking to transport two blue marbles and two red marbles to one of your clients. You need a container to send them in. Because these marbles are quite precious you want to make sure that they are sent in a well fortified box, but you also care about fitting as many boxes as possible into your supply trucks, so you don't want to waste any space inside of them. You pack all four marbles tightly into the box and seal it up.
When your client receives their shipment, they open it up and can easily see all four marbles in the box. There isn’t much incentive for them to move the marbles since, even though the box has a bit of a heavy hinge, it's not really that big of a deal and any other box would incur some cost in opening it too. They place the box on their shelf and don't worry about it any further.
Now imagine you want to send a client one hundred thousand marbles. But your boxes still only fit four marbles each. The transportation is easy and efficient because the boxes stack nicely (assume for a moment you also have an extremely efficient marble box packing machine), but, once they all arrive at their destination, your client doesn't want to search through hundreds of boxes trying to find the marble they are looking for. They want to move all those marbles to a much bigger and well sorted marble... Okay I really don't know what people normally store hundreds of thousands of marbles in. But the point being that even though all the marbles are still the same, at a certain volume the transportation container was no longer optimal to keep at the destination. 4k HEVC .ts files are HORRIBLY inefficient at rendering even on relatively good hardware and moving the data to MP4 has huge performance benefits.
So the file extension of the source doesn't matter? Well I still think it does, psychologically. I would always trust a .ts more than a .mp4 at 1080i. It isn't possible for you to know, without the original, that what the uploader did was a remux (changing the container) rather than a re-encode (a lossy operation which, best case scenario, produced an output that looks equivalent to the human eye because nothing crucial was lost). Well intentioned people accidentally re-encode to MP4 all the time without realising what it does to the integrity of the file. It's much less likely someone has had the same mishap in the other direction because .ts is not a commonly desired destination. So even though a remuxed MP4 is identical in quality to it's MPEG-TS source, in order to avoid other people's translation errors I would always trust an available .ts first.
That file, assuming it is what it says it is, would absolutely be better than downloading the same performance from YouTube. YouTube has done a lossy re-encode on the video the broadcaster uploaded and will not ever serve you the original. A really obvious symptom of this is the file sizes. YouTube will always be a lot smaller. (For the same encoding. Which by the way you can find out by using Media Info. AVC=h264, HEVC=h265) It's pretty noticeable to the human eye in motion, so it can be a fun exercise to play the two side by side and compare. It's also noticeable on a frame by frame level if you use a player that lets you do that.
But yeah, in summary, YouTube's version of that performance will be unquestionably worse. On average it will be missing 3/4 of the information stored in the original. Which, because of how cool compression is, actually still produces a pretty decent image, but it falls apart in motion and really if you are an individual wanting to watch something for your own enjoyment instead of a big company trying to optimise their bandwidth usage there's just no need to sacrifice those pixels.

SKAM — No Name (Drag City)
No Name looks like a reissue, but it’s not, because while the album is chock full of class of 1979-style punk anthems and while it dates from DC’s early 1980s hardcore scene, this music has never been released before. SKAM, to the extent that it existed at all, existed only in the live setting. If you weren’t there, you missed it. At least until now.
This record drops like a time capsule, with very little of the scene-setting verbiage that often accompanies long-unavailable music. Drag City admits that SKAM was active from 1980 to 1983, that it had four members—Obadiah Snooks, Vince Forcier, John Hugo and Jack Anderson—and that it came up alongside bands like Minor Threat. That’s about it, though, for backstory. For the rest, you’ll have to go to the tape, or the CD or the digital download, because after a long time of having nothing, we now have just the music. Which is fire. Which is enough all by itself.
The first thing to understand is that although SKAM came out of the same scene as Minor Threat, Bad Brains and the Velvet Monkeys, it is not really a hardcore band. It’s slower, for one thing, more melodic and full of anthemic drama. It sounds a lot more like the Clash and the Sex Pistols than you’d expect an American band to, and when SKAM covers the Stooges’ “Search and Destroy,” it’s a return to punk’s earliest origins, before it was even called punk. The big guitars of rock ‘n roll clang out boldly, but there’s a sneering lip curl that’s pure nihilism.
The 13 studio tracks—although SKAM never released an album, its members clearly meant to at one point—are recorded with punch and vigor, a clean mix that nevertheless gets the band at its anarchic best. “No Name” turns alienation into a rallying cry with abrupt, jutting guitar licks running into shouts of the title. The usual pieties come under assault—the church in “Organized Religion,” the military industrial complex in “I Want War,” the justice system in “Capital Punishment”—in a jacked up, hilarious kind of pissed-ness. (From “Capital Punishment”: “Capital punishment is the way to get things done/make the world safe for democracy/go on and kill a bum.”) The message is probably important, but what you feel now, 40 years later, is the vicious precision of the riffs.
There are four live tracks, recorded with somewhat less sonic fidelity but capturing the raging fury of this band in front of an audience. The guitar chug of “Paid Vacation” is a visceral thing, while Snook’s wild vibrato wail gestures oddly over the racket. But “No Name” live is the best of these, taking its slow, ringing power chords from old-school rock and roll, its tempo and bile from punk rock. If they’d ever gotten this one out there, it could have been a massive hit. In an alternate universe, it already is.

Have some song recs! I suspect we have a lot of crossover in terms of music taste so I tried to include some out-there choices as well (I promise I won't be upset if they're not your thing 😉🥰):
A Hero's Death - Fontaines D.C.
The Girl is Crying in her Latte - Sparks
Forloveren - Kaizers Orchestra
Маяк - The Hardkiss
Cha Cha Cha - Käärijä (couldn't resist 😅💚)
Hope you're having a lovely week too 💖
hellooo 💓 thank you so much for these 🥰 i do always love getting to listen to music i’d probably never come across on my own, so thank you for including the out there choices as well as the ones that you could probably pretty safely bet are to my usual taste!
a hero’s death - fontaines dc
couldn’t listen all the way through | not my thing | it’s okay | kinda catchy | ok i really like this | downloading immediately | already in my library
i think you must have read my mind on this one because i've just recently started listening to fontaines dc after YEARS of everyone telling me i'd love them, and yeah. they're pretty damn cool from what i've heard so far, and this song has only pulled me in more!
the girl is crying in her latte - sparks
couldn’t listen all the way through | not my thing | it’s okay | kinda catchy | ok i really like this | downloading immediately | already in my library
i can appreciate that this is a really cool song (and it actually got stuck in my head on a loop after hearing it lol), but it's just a bit too electronic for my taste
forloveren - kaizers orchestra
couldn’t listen all the way through | not my thing | it’s okay | kinda catchy | ok i really like this | downloading immediately | already in my library
oooooh this is so atmospheric and full of layers and unexpected surprises, i really liked it and i've never heard anything quite like it!
mаяк - the hardkiss
couldn’t listen all the way through | not my thing | it’s okay | kinda catchy | ok i really like this | downloading immediately | already in my library
this is not my usual taste, but i actually really liked the overall feeling and vibe of it - it's really powerful
cha cha cha - käärijä
couldn’t listen all the way through | not my thing | it’s okay | kinda catchy | ok i really like this | downloading immediately | already in my library
aghhhhh i'm sorry i know how much you love him (and i can totally see why, whenever your posts about him pop up on my dash i think he looks SO cool, and also i've heard only the loveliest things about him), but this is just not really my vibe, it's too electronic for me 😅 that being said, i was listening to these in the living room and my sister (and flatmate lol) was there and the moment this song started playing she looked up from her phone and said "oh my god, turn it up" and that's how i found out she's a käärijä fan 😂
thank you so much for these, this was really fun! hope you're having a good week so far, sending you all the good vibes ✨💗
#sorry it took me a while to answer this#chronic pain has been kicking my butt over the last week so i'm just generally behind on asks/messages/literally everything in my life rn 😅#asks

Stream, purchase and download music by the hottest up and coming rock band in the world, The Warning on Apple Music.
A familial Mexican hard rock band that blends savvy riffage, fist-pumping beats, and stadium-ready choruses, the Warning went from viral sensations to festival faves with the release of their 2017 debut album, XXI Century Blood. Comprised of sisters Daniela (guitar, lead vocals), Paulina (drums, vocals, piano), and Alejandra Villarreal (bass, piano, backing vocals), the trio inked a deal with Universal imprint Lava Records in 2021 and issued the full-length ERROR in 2022.
The Villarreal sisters began posting videos online around 2014 and soon attracted attention due to the teen siblings' instrumental precocity as well as a repertory made up of heavy metal covers by Metallica, Guns N' Roses, and AC/DC. Signed by Victoria Records, the Warning issued their first EP, Escape the Mind, in 2015. The group's debut album, XXI Century Blood, appeared in 2017, and before long the trio were sharing the stage with the likes of Def Leppard and the Killers. They released their sophomore full-length effort, Queen of the Murder Scene, in 2019, and caught the attention of Lava Records, which quickly added the band to its roster. "Choke," the Warning's debut single for the major label, arrived in 2021, and appeared on the 2022 long-player ERROR.

Handmade DC intro title card for a Shazam film that I made up!!⚡️
This post is kinda interesting because I have not tried my hand at video editing in a while. I’m hoping to get one of my friends to help me install photoshop on my computer so I can remake this sequence with actual 3D assets. But for now? They’re hand drawn in procreate.
I thought I would share some behind the scenes of how I made this for anyone who might be interested in doing something similar! :D
[ Behind the Scenes Info Below ⬇️ ]
Okay so I decided to make this intro as kinda like a “ooh what if I made my own Shazam film? How would I do the opening DC title? I would want it to be like a dark and spooky night, then have the camera be panning down through the clouds. Then I could easily transition into the opening scene because that takes place during a dark and stormy night. OOoOoO.”
But first, in order to do that I had to make modifications to the DC logo. I didn’t want to use any premade 3D assets they had; I wanted to make my own. However, I don’t currently have photoshop, so I had to improvise and make a 2D logo kinda look 3D with some extra layers and shading tricks. I did this in procreate, but any art app will do really. Just keep your preferred perspective in mind.
Then after I was done with making sure my perspective was all good and in check I then proceeded to decorate the hell out of the logo with a bunch of clipping masks lol. I just slapped a bunch of different things on there. Some lense flares, some random brushes, some multiply layers, whatever. I didn’t really have a plan in mind when I did this I just kinda went with the vibes.
Then after that I made another file where I just worked on the little sparkle effect that I added in. For the sparkle effect I just picked like a default brush in procreate that looked pretty and then animated it to do a little slide across the letter “D”.
Next, I did some work on the backgrounds. I made sure to have really “tall” files so that way I could make them slide down in my video editor. This kinda gives that vibe that we are descending through the clouds, hopefully towards an establishing shot, for our opening scene, for our fake movie.
I made two parts for this. One animated background where I changed to opacity of the backlight for each frame to kinda give the illusion that lightning was peaking through the clouds. The second was just some clouds that I was gonna overlay on top of the DC logo, so it just felt more like everything was in the scene together.
I would provide video examples of this, but tumblr only allows me to upload one video per post. And if you’re wondering what brushes I used to this? I just googled “Procreate free cloud brushes” and downloaded the top result.
The ones I’m using are made by an artist named DI, and I got them off of gumroad. Info for their socials provided in the third image below.
And then once I had all of those assets together I just edited them all together in a program called HitFilm Express. I used to like it a lot since it’s free, and I used to use it to edit YouTube videos. That was back when I used to upload my Minecraft videos with my friends online lol. However, recently HitFilm has put a lot of features I used to use behind a paywall so :/. I’m probably going to look for alternatives sometime soon.
Normally I don’t mind being restricted in some sense for a free program, but they disabled the ability to fade clips in and out, and I think that’s a vital tool. It’s a shame to see it locked behind a paywall because I used it in pretty much all my projects.
And lastly the audio! I just found free to use clips of rain sounds, thunder claps, and then some ambient music. The track you can hear in this short clip is the intro to the song Redeye - Green House (1994). The artist is also known as Tobias Beldermann if any of you guys were curious where I got that from.
Buttttt yeah! That’s about all I have for showing you guys how I made my little 5 second clip. I’m not really one who’s qualified to make “tutorials” in any sense, because most of what I post online is just me dicking around and having fun, so I don’t want to be super serious. But, I also like showing my process just so if anyone out there is maybe interested in doing something similar, well then they have some ideas for where to start.
Anyways, if you guys want to read my first couple scenes for my Shazam story Shazam:City of Brotherly Love I’m going to link it here.
It’s still a work in progress, and if I end up doing any edits I’m just going to make them to the the post itself. Just because it’s not really worth it to me, posting almost identical chapters/scenes over, and over again lol.
Okiii byyeee!! I hope you enjoyed!! ~✨
