Bookshelf Briefs 1/4/21

Black Clover, Vol. 23 | By Yuki Tabata | Viz Media – Given we came to the end of a very long arc last time, it makes sense that there’s a lot of goofy comedy before we start the next arc (which has a timeskip!). Fortunately, Black Clover is pretty good at being dumb and goofy in a shonen way—I’ve said before that it’s ripping off every single shonen series in the world, but it’s not doing it badly. Therefore we get a lot of silly love confessions, and priestesses who wear spiral “nerd” glasses like Mousse from Ranma 1/2. Oh yes, and Asta is not executed—for now. They still think he’s totally evil, though. Hopefully fighting a devil may help to change that opinion. This has become one of the longest-running Jump series now, and it’s easy to see why it’s still going. – Sean Gaffney

Days of Love at Seagull Villa, Vol. 1 | By Kodama Naoko | Seven Seas – Another yuri series from this author, this book starts with one of our heroines fleeing to the countryside after her boyfriend gets her best friend pregnant. She’s there to teach (and boy, her class could use some lessons in “don’t slutshame and don’t bully”), but she’s also staying with a young woman who’s raising a kid alone after her whole family was killed. The two are seeming opposites, but turn out to possibly have much in common. The yuri so far here is just a drunken kiss, but I’m sure there will be more to it. That said, the series seems content to introduce its cast and then start to simmer things to a slow boil. That’s good too. I want to learn more about this village. – Sean Gaffney

Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?! Everyday Misadventures!, Vol. 1 | By FUNA and Yuki Moritaka | Seven Seas – I was expecting this to be a 4-koma sort of volume, but it isn’t. Instead it’s just goofy comedy chapters without the ongoing plot that we get in the normal series. So you get things like Reina trying to learn to cook, and Mavis getting hit on by women again, etc. The usual stereotypes apply—Pauline has large breasts, Mile is… well, Mile, Reina is hot-headed, etc. There’s also a flashback to Adele’s experiences at school, where it turns out that all the school’s “Seven Mysteries” are just her being stupidly overpowered. No one should get this who’s not a fan of the original, but those who are should be quite pleased. – Sean Gaffney

Dr. STONE, Vol. 14 | By Riichiro Inagaki and Boichi | Viz Media – Most of this volume is trying to rescue everyone from the evil village “god” and his even more evil minion, who is unfortunately more overpowered than most of our team. On the cool side, most of the rest of the group gets un-petrified after recovering their bodies from the ocean floor, thanks to the power of Taiju being really strong and really dumb. On the less-cool side, Kohaku and Ginro are now petrified, though frankly that’s a good thing in Ginro’s case, as he was bleeding to death. This is probably the biggest villain that Senku and company have had to face before, so it makes sense that he’s finally taking a very dark step (as he himself says) and bringing guns into this world. Great fun. – Sean Gaffney

Eniale & Dewiela, Vol. 1 | By Kamome Shirahama | Yen Press – I was told when I saw who the author of this series was that I should not expect it to be much like Witch Hat Atelier, and that’s an understatement if anything. Oh, the art is still amazingly gorgeous, but the content is very much designed for those who enjoy the dynamic of, say, Gabriel Dropout. An angel and a demon are best friends despite sniping at each other the entire volume. Eniale is a bit of a featherhead. Dewiela has a bit of a temper. Together, they get involved in Very Wacky Situations. How much you enjoy this will depend on how wacky you find the situations. I found it fun, but I think I would enjoy it better in a magazine chapter by chapter than in volume form. – Sean Gaffney

Hatsu*Haru, Vol. 13 | By Shizuki Fujisawa | Yen Press – This series about four couples—heavily overbalanced towards two of them—finally comes to a close by going back to its leads, as Riko’s mom is moving due to her job and… is NOT asking Riko to come with her. Yes, the final volume involves everyone trying to self-sacrifice the most, with lots of tears and angry words. Of course we know that Riko really needs to be with her mom, even if they may not have the best relationship, which of course means that she and Kai are now far from each other. Fortunately, it’s the final volume, so this can be resolved with a flash forward to college. This was a solid series, but I’ll remember it for Takaya and Ayumi more than anyone else—in fact, possibly just Ayumi. – Sean Gaffney

I Love You So Much, I Hate You | By Yuni | Yen Press – Ayako Asano and Saori Fujimura are both accomplished, successful career women working closely with each other at their company. But outside of the office they’re even closer—they’ve actually started sleeping with one another. Two women becoming romantically involved isn’t so much of an issue, but the fact that Ayako is both married to a man and is Saori’s boss poses some significant problems. I Love You So Much, I Hate You is a mature manga dealing with some mature themes. Initially, there are definite imbalances in Ayako and Saori’s relationship, each woman approaching it from a different starting point and hoping to get different things out of it. However, over the course of the volume their needs and desires begin to align. But it’s not easy for either of them for a variety of reasons; granted, a relationship that starts out as an affair is bound to be complicated. – Ash Brown

An Incurable Case of Love, Vol. 5 | By Maki Enjoji | Viz Media – Nanase and Dr. Tendo are a couple now, so, inevitably, we must introduce the rivals. This volume gives us the first one, a rich young man with a medical condition who cynically says that people only care about him because of his money. He runs into Nanase, who is, well, herself, and falls head over heels in love with her. I was impressed how the author took this old-standard josei manga trope and simply… had the leads act like adults. There are a few misunderstandings and small fights, but there’s no huge blowup or breakup, mostly as Dr. Tendo is very familiar with who Nanase is. That said, Nanase still has self-image issues, and the cliffhanger implies a stronger rival on the way. Maki Enjoji is always good. – Sean Gaffney

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Vol. 17 | By Aka Akasaka | Viz Media – While we’re still dealing with the consequences of Miyuki and Kaguya dating, the series really has gotten very good at the tiny little jokes. Including possibly the DARKEST ‘in between chapters’ gag I’ve ever seen, where Iino talks about how she enjoys pain as it makes her “feel safe.” As for Chika, I think she has realized that the author increasingly doesn’t know what to do with her. She probably does not have a big character-building arc like the other four, so she’s essentially the goofy one that annoys people, something she is catching on to. Though the funniest chapter in this book features Karen invading the main title from her spin-off manga—still sadly not licensed—and almost getting everyone arrested. – Sean Gaffney

Practice Makes Perfect, Vol. 3 | By Ui Hanamiya | Kodansha Comics (digitial only) – This volume has our lead couple finally going all the way, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t problems. For one, the first time HURTS, and even successive attempts are nine parts pain to one part pleasure for Nohara (who, amusingly, is still trying to handle this in a “sports” way, as is Yano). There’s also the fact that Yano thinks that Nohara is going to break if he tries to be anything but super super gentle, which… also is not helping, though it leads to the volume’s best joke. Fortunately, the next volume is the last. Unfortunately, it appears that we’re going to get a “hey, the girl I love spends her days surrounded by hot guys!” chapter. Still, this Rated-R manga is still a lot more fun than I expected. – Sean Gaffney

I am still digesting everything Omar has said to me in the car, I think I have never been without Cassius in these things and this time I am, he usually hides these things and it looks like we are ok “so you wanted to speak to us?” Amira sat down finally “so I am happy with the dress, we got that. So we was riding back and I called Cassius and told him that you girls want to have some fun” all of the girls groaned out “telling men anything means the whole thing is ruined” Olivia said “well, not ruined. So Cassius said we can go Clover Club and he has a spot for us and that Omar is coming with us and I am supporting that idea” I need to let them know I want it too “if you ok with that and Cassius got us a spot because when I asked they was busy” Mia said shaking her head “they said they was busy, dead ass they did” Amira chuckled “girl no, always ask me. I can always get it for you. Me or Cassius. They are never busy, they hold it back for the famous these spots, I will always get you in” Amira is not wrong “oh they asses do that? Well if Cassius ain’t ruining plans, lets do this” the girls are ok with it, I thought they would hate it “let’s raise a toast girls, I mean Sofia with her orange juice” pouting my lips out as I reached for the glass and picked it up “I want to raise a glass for the fact Cassius is finally marrying my girl but also, how far you have become. A mother of two, a home owner, marrying the love of your life. Also the fact Cassius has made that happen, so I really want to raise a glass to Cassius, he’s not here but he’s a good guy and I would thank him but to Cassius” Mia said, my smile grew “I also want to add that Cassius has come a long way from the Cassius I know, he has changed for the better and I want to thank Sofia for that so to Sofia” I cooed out at Jasmine “if he was here he would be emotional, Cassius is an emotional person really” I said, my baby getting this kind of love “to Cassius ladies” Amira said as we clinked glasses.

I think it does suck that I can only drink orange juice or water, I would love to get drunk for one night. Grabbing my bag, Amira opened the door “why do y’all do this? Like it scares us” Cassius and his none speaking people, they just come out of nowhere “y’all ready?” Omar said, he looked at me and it’s like he pays no attention to anyone but me “after you ladies, and you go ahead” he threw his cigarette to the side “took your time, my head hurts from the screaming” I guess we was loud “can I have Amira in the car, please?” I said please “Kyle’ girl?” he asked “yes” stepping outside “sure, aye homie. You in the SUV, keep them safe” I am just going to accept this.

I am so glad I have Amira with me, I chose Amira because she knows and she knows the business and when they speak about things it’s private and only she can understand it “this is a fancy car Sofia, look at it. Why complain?” Amira said, she is not wrong “I am not, it gets lonely and Omar constantly bullies me” Omar laughed “I don’t, she doesn’t like the fact I am right. How long you been with Kyle Amira?” see he is nosey too “wow, it will be ten years next year” my mouth fell open “wow, that long? And he has not made you wifey, he really made you wait it out?” the words came out of my mouth without even thinking “no, I think we were happy as we are. I am secure Sofia, like with how we are, but he proposed to me and that was a step he took his time with. I think I had to accept that Kyle put Cassius first in everything, it is just now where he backed away, he saw Cassius was ok, he saw he was having a family and kids and now he’s like we can too. If I was marrying Kyle, I was marrying Cassius too and I am not lying. Sometimes you just have to accept it, you have to be there for him when he needs it. When Cassius got locked up, he was heartbroken and I hated seeing that, the times he thought he lost his brother. Some bonds you can’t break. And Sofia, I accepted because I love Kyle and I wanted his happiness, he does spend time with me and more now than we usually do. But yeah, nine years is long” Amira really was there for Cassius and he didn’t know “wow, that is love” I said “I am just happy Cassius found love, I uhm” Amira paused “I didn’t want to lose Kyle, because Cassius was spiralling downwards, Kyle was fine with going with him too. All these years I never met the man, Kyle didn’t want me too and kept it away from me and I am glad I did now. We’re ok now though” Amira smiled at me “true, you’re such a good woman” holding her hand “and I’m still struggling” I don’t want her to be sad “I know” I said in a whisper, Cassius done told me already “it will happen, I know it will for you” Amira took in a deep breath “but it’s your day today, we good girl” she squeezed my hand.

Omar started that in the back and then his ass went all quiet, all his damn fault “so here we are ladies” Omar got out of the car, there is a line here outside “is it always this busy?” I mean Amira would know “it is, you know when we generated a name in Miami it was a knock on affect to New York and so on, it does well” opening the car door as I stepped out “I would have opened the door for you” the guy that doesn’t speak to me is actually speaking, they are usually mute “I can do it” I smiled at him, walking around the car “bride to be!!” Mia spat as she shuffled over to me “how can I forget” I chuckled as she placed her arm around me as we walked towards the club “oh my gosh, look at that” looking up seeing the sign “Sofia’ night” I read out “oh my gosh, oh my baby. He did that” he changed the sign for me and for it to be my night “I love him so much” I gushed.

We are useless, I can actually admit that now. That we as men are useless, because first of all we came Florida late, then we arrived and I was tired so I didn’t bother. Kyle tried to do some things while I stayed at the hotel with both Bryce and Cartier, they are tiring and I think it’s even tiring that Bryce is very demanding, even trying to figure out what he wants but I am getting there. I can’t really be loving towards him because Cartier don’t like it, I am just tired “the girls done got their shit done and onto their bridesmaids dresses, we bad” Kyle said “I know, we getting there. You say this was the shop?” I pointed out, Kyle went and did research “it is” looks like a nice jewellery store too “I came and checked it out with gay Lee over here” I laughed, Kyle is not shit “gay Lee, have you asked if he likes that name?” I questioned “we bonded, we good” shaking my head laughing “I guess we need to get out of the car” looking over at Cartier “I am not ready for this” I am tired from dressing them in the morning, Cartier held his hand out to me with his pacifier “thank you son, you ready Bryce?” he looked at me, he is in his own world “boss” Ethan opened the door for me “yeah coming out, we need to get momma a nice ring” getting out of the car.

Holding my hand out to Bryce as he took it, I got Cartier in my arm and holding Bryce’ hand as we walked towards the store “daddy day care and shit ain’t it” Ethan said “says you nanny, you got the bag” I do love it though, I love this actually. It may be tiring but it’s loving, I get so much love from them but Cartier does not know how to share at all, he is really bad with it. Walking into the store “Kyle you are back” he already knows him “I told you I would be back, here is the man himself. The man of the hour, he needs help with the rings” Kyle said behind me “I am Matt, I would shake your hand but you are busy. I will help you decide, I have the room waiting for us to see the many rings we have” he seems like a nice guy “come on young don, we about to see some shiny things” I said looking down at Bryce, he smiled as we walked together. He is so good, very quiet. He likes to play on his own a lot because I think he probably finds it draining to interact with others because they don’t understand him and we struggle to do the same but I am spending much needed time with him, he is so special to me.

Matt finally came back in the room “so do you have anything in mind, anything you want to buy for her?” good question “erm, not sure. The most expensive thing?” I mean that will look nice “we can do that but I am sure she will want a lot of thought into it” he said it like he would tell “I got her a big engagement ring, it’s the best on what they had there so I got it. It is big so you know, I am not sure what else to get?” Matt nodded his head “ok, well we have a band where it could make an addition to the ring or do you want to have another ring and replace it?” this is hard work already “a band? I mean ain’t that tacky?” Matt laughed “no, not at all. Let me show you one, I think you will like it” looking over at Kyle “you have no clue do you?” I laughed shaking my head “I am trying my best, I just want it to look pretty for her” Kyle cooed out “so this is a band of sixteen diamonds, white gold. It is an eternity ring” he bought the ring to me “Kyle has shown me the ring and from what I have seen, this will look great” it is very shiny “you see this Bryce, shiny” Matt ain’t even letting me touch it “as you can see from afar, it’s not something you would say disappoints. You can use this and then later in the future buy her a new ring but I think this would be perfect, you know how beautiful it looks” nodding my head “you right, when did Kyle show you the ring I got her?” I asked “he came in, he showed me an example. He helped you out a lot” Kyle is always there for me.

I thought while I was here I would get my son a gold chain “aye, dada. Let daddy do it” he is so fussy for nothing, clipping the chain around his neck “wow dada, you rich, rich” I like this chain “this is solid cuban gold diamond chain” Matt said “yeah, only thing is that it may be heavy for him but he seems to be ok with it” he doesn’t seem annoyed by it “you good too?” I asked Bryce, he seems ok with the chain too “you like it? It’s shiny ain’t it?” touching the chain, he looks so happy with it “I told you, what dada get, you get. I mean my wife, but I want a Rolex” she needs a Rolex while I am here “I can get you that but there is something that we was requested from Kyle” another assistant walked in with a box “from Kyle?” furrowing my eyebrows looking over at Kyle “from me bro” Kyle said, Matt walked over to me with the box “this is a gift from Kyle” Matt said to Bryce and opened the box, looking in the box and seeing a diamond encrusted chain with Jordan’ picture “it’s real diamonds, and a picture of your late father” seeing the picture of Jordan, I am a little choked up “you got that for him?” I said to Kyle “family, you right. He looks just like Jordan and being with him, he deserves to know him and have him on his neck. We all grew up with him” reaching over and taking the chain out of the box “you know who this is Bryce? This is your dad” reaching around him and placing the chain around his neck “this is your dad, he may have been a pain but that was my brother” turning the picture around “he always going to be there for you” my voice broke, Bryce is staring down at the picture and then looked at me “dad” he said, he knows it “you know it son, I love you nephew” he was so fucking lost in trying to be me, Jordan had no chance.

Staring at myself in the mirror, I am not sure how to feel about it. I am nervous, I can’t lie about this, I am so nervous the fact I am getting married and now I am stood here staring at myself in a Tuxedo, I am a simple man. I choose things straight away but I think I like this Tuxedo, I really do. I am getting married, that shit is so wild to me because I never thought I would “dada!” hearing Cartier scream from outside the changing room, and I never thought I would be a father “dads coming, calm down” hearing Kyle say, I am feeling choked up. I am getting married, this is happening “coming out now” I said, closing the button my suit jacket and making my way out. do you have a crush on anyone? Someone like Edalyn "Eda" from The Owl House? (I guess that's technically more like a platonic "squish", but when you're aro, that's all you've got.)

what’s your favorite candy? Ooh, that one's tricky. I don't actually like most regular candy? But I like not-so-sweet things, like black licorice, and candied ginger, and dark chocolate-- we're talking like 80+ percent cacao. Or peppermint, if it's the real stuff (and not York patties)~

favorite love song? Right now, I am absolutely ADDICTED to "True" and "Amaranthine", by Amaranthe!

what was your first kiss like? ...At the time, confusing. I'm on the far end of the demigray aromantic spectrum. The first time I received a kiss, I was in second grade and my best friend at the time gave me a kiss on the cheek in the lunch room as he passed, just out of nowhere, kiss. It was sweet, and I was a touch flustered and a lot delighted, but I didn't know how to respond.

My first kiss on the lips was with a boy in sixth grade, while my elementary school was having the annual 6th Grade Swimming Party at the local pool... which happens to be right next to a park. A boy asked me to come to the woods with him, and being the defiant screw-the-rules kid I've always been, I accepted. I asked why though, and he told me it was a secret... until we were in the forest, and he asked if he could kiss me. Mind, I'd never felt attracted to anyone, let alone this kid. I didn't even know he even knew I existed? But I guess that's how crushes tend to go, he'd never opened up about it until the last day we'd be in the same city. At age 13, I was still being mercilessly bullied by nearly every kid of every gender in my grade. So to be kissed... Well, he was moving away, and I figured I wouldn't know what it was like to kiss someone until I tried. So it was mostly just experimental and scientific on my end. But he apparently liked it, because he wanted to do it again, and even asked me to kiss him underwater, which was kind of fun actually.

what was your last kiss like? A goodbye kiss for my girl, which was much more fun and satisfying and fulfilling and lovely and nice~

sexual/romantic orientation? Okay, so, I'm not Entirely sure? I know I'm definitely demigray, I know I'm panromantic, but even with the demigray modifier, I don't feel pansexual, I feel 99.9999999% Asexual (there has literally only ever been One Singular Person I've ever felt Sexual Attraction towards, maybe two), so I identify more as an Ace than even demigraysexual.

do you prefer poems or love letters? I prefer poems, but I prefer to be the one writing them. c: I suck at sappy stuff though, I really need to figure out how to up my romance game, because my girl deserves nine thousand poems made out of chocolate paper with rose ink and gold.

favorite fanfic trope? Hurt/Comfort doesn't count as a trope, does it? ?? But of the things I know are tropes, it's absolutely Found Family.

have you ever been in love? I am right now, thank you. /uwu\

favorite milkshake flavor? Mint chocolate chip? Or banana? Or cookies-and-cream? My favorite part is the whipped cream, honestly. 8F

dinner dates or brunch dates? Whichever my partner prefers! Brunch tends to be cheaper and easier, but I tend to be more awake for dinner dates.

favorite flowers? Oh, heck if I know. I love the smell of lilac, cherry blossoms have a lovely smell AND taste and aesthetic, orchids come in so many fascinating shapes, dragonsnaps are fun to pinch, tulips look so elegant, heal-all is pretty and inspiring and medicinal, I'm a total sucker for wildflowers and native plants and bee attractants, clover and honeysuckle smell nice AND taste so lovely...

favorite perfume/cologne? I prefer to use a dab of essential oil, less additives and such. Rose, jasmine, lavender, maybe even sandalwood or frankincense? It's more about the mood and the magical energy I can work with than the smell itself.

favorite candle scent? Oh gosh, I don't know. Floral, fresh scents like pine and mint, "warm" scents like sandalwood, a local candle store has this scent they call "bamboo" something that I really like....

what’s your ideal first date? Talking. Lots and lots of back-and-forth, in-depth talking. Preferably somewhere quiet and open.

favorite love story? Honestly? It's Dove and Srentha's. I don't even know how to encapsulate it, but it's their perseverance, their determination to work through the problems they've faced (and to face it TOGETHER!), no matter how big or fatal or scary, and the give-and-take-and-give-again dance that they're so good at balancing. The adaption, the adventure, the belief and relief!

what’s the most attractive thing a person could wear? Something that they really love. (I'm not attracted to physical appearances, I'm attracted to emotions and sincerity and expressionism. So find your style and FLAUNT it!)

chocolate, vanilla, or red velvet? Oooh, if it's DARK chocolate then it's chocolate, if it's not then probably vanilla.

snow, rain, or sun? Snow, please. ~<3</p>

sweetest romantic memory? heck. I don't do enough of the romantic stuff... but talking to my girl, those conversations of vulnerability and trust and support really get to me.

favorite dating sim (and favorite character)? I don't play dating sims. (I'd give Hatoful Boyfriend a try though.)

fictional crushes? EDA. N? (but those are squishes again. hmm...) Also kinda Jericho? and Rorek. that one's a Crush^tm

what’s your dream wedding like? A handfasting, first of all! But if I were to ever get married, it would be outside, in a forest or by a stream, and... not a big production. Because it's not about the wedding; I'd want it to just be an Acknowledgement of something, not a Creation. I'd want the feelings to be there Before the wedding. And of course I'd want to incorporate all kinds of pagan traditions... but as to which ones, I'd want to work with my partner to create a day that's lovely for BOTH of us.

what makes you blush? Very few things, actually, and I've yet to find something that Consistently makes me Blush.

do you believe in love at first sight? I believe in infatuation at first sight, but "love" doesn't come from physical appearance. As Garnet put it: "Love takes time, and love takes work."

do you believe in soulmates? Very strongly, yes indeed. (In the traditional sense, where two people had known each other in a previous life. The actual meaning of "soulmates" isn’t inherently romantic at all! Though I think it can work on all levels of relationship.)

denim jackets, leather jackets, or bomber jackets? I don't even wear jackets. Give me a cloak any day! (Can't a bomber jacket be made of leather or demin?)

what’s your sign? "Abandom all hope, ye who enter here." It's hanging right on the door of my room! As for what you actually mean? 8F My Chinese zodiac sign is a water rooster, and my Greek zodiac sign is Aries sun, Cancer moon, Scorpio rising, with some Libras, Virgos, and Sagittarius around the rest of my chart.

what’s your dreamhouse? Okay, now THIS one I've dreamed about! I've always wanted a house with a stonework exterior, and maybe interior around a fireplace or basement walls. Especially if it's a neutral or cooler tone rock; slate's blue-gray would be my favorite. I'd want to work something like iolite or sodalite into the walls somewhere, maybe in the bedroom or a meditation room. (I saw it in a magazine and fell in love with it, okay?) That's something I'd DEFINITELY have-- a meditation room! Well insulated from cold and light and sound, but ventilated enough to not suffocate via incense or something. There would be an altar or two, and I have so many ideas of what it'll look like-- definitely a darker space, but do I want to work gold in there? Marble? Drapery or keeping the space open? (Probably open, but a big skylight I could open to the moon would be ideal.)

And a piano room, with a baby grand and my electric keyboard. (And all my CDs, sheet music, etc. Maybe I'd have a private vocal coach come out and teach me in that room.)

A sauna!, probably outdoor. I'd like a huge garden, especially with night-blooming flowers and native plants. A butterfly and bee and bird sanctuary~ And one of those stone paths, maybe leading to a fountain. I'd definitely like a lot of land outside, because I'd love to have a koi pond (butterfly koi are my favorite~<3), and also a "natural" swimming pool! With tons of plants and aeration. Maybe a waterfall (but not as the only source of motion)!</p>

I'd also want to build an indoor aviary for the birds (with the two-entranceway setup to prevent escapes-- and I'd have ringneck doves again~), and a whole room dedicated to the chinchillas too. There would be HUGE windows so I could keep an eye on them, and easy access so I could come play and socialize with them whenever I'd like.

I'm not sure if I'd want it to be in the same place as the meditation room or not, but I'd also love to have walls and walls of books. Not like I don't already have that, but I'd have them ALL out and on display! The shelves would be dark, and the books would be arranged by subject matter, and age, and my favorites would be the easiest to reach. The only question on books is whether I'd keep my comic books with the rest of the reading material, or dedicate yet another room to my collection of Titans and Pokemon and Steven Universe merch....

The Toonami Trending Rundown for March 30-31, 2019. Time sure flies by when you’re having fun, and it’s been 7 years since Toonami’s April fool’s day revival. And 7 years on, things continue to look up for Toonami and the anime industry overall as we continue to enjoy this great programming block that continues to inspire. And among other moments from the night, Asta unleashes a hidden power inside of him to stop Ladros, while Kirito and Eugeo enlist in a swordsman academy to level up their skills, and after a yearlong event, we finally reach the end of the Chimera Ant arc.

On Twitter, #Toonami would trend in the US alongside #BlackClover and #HunterXHunter. Dragon Ball Super, SAO, and Shippuden also trended alongside these shows, but not outright. Sword Art Online saw a character trend in Kirito as he duels Volo as he accidentally flung dirt onto him when training, and would also have to deal with the school bullies in Humbert and Raios. He also trains along with his disciple Leina and later on, he and Eugeo become disciples to Ronye and Tiese. With Kirito’s knack of “cheating” on Asuna and having girls eventually fall in love with him, no doubt lots of noticing from senpai was seen.

For those who didn’t get to see it in theaters, the first My Hero Academia Film: The Two Heroes can now be purchased on Funimation’s site as well as other major anime selling retailers, with a Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital combo pack retailing for a $34.98 MSRP.

In Akira news, it looks like the live action adaptation might be going forward to be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Warner Bros. According to Variety, the California Film Commision will be giving Warner a $18.5 million tax credit on the condition that Californians are employed for production and the entire film is shot within the Golden State.

Arc System Works and Trigger has released a new Product Info Trailer for the upcoming Kill la Kill video Game: IF, planned for release on July 26 on all major platforms except the Xbox.

Yeah, you SAO haters are glad that Toonami rekindled relationships with Aniplex now, huh? Anyways, after a few weeks of anticipation on what Megalo Box’s replacement on the schedule will be, Toonami and Aniplex has just announced this week that the hit anime horror series The Promised Neverland will be joining the better cartoon show.

Based on the manga by written by Kaiu Shirai and Illustrated by Posuka Demizu, The Promised Neverland has been one of Shonen Jump’s biggest surprise hits in recent years with over 128 chapters and counting since it began serialization in August 2016. The show’s first season was a big hit and talking point during the Winter 2019 anime season in both Japan and on streaming, so much so that Studio CloverWorks and Aniplex have already greenlighted a second season, which will premiere sometime in 2020, as well as efforts by fans and producers were made to eventually get the show on Toonami, and their wishes were granted.

On Monday, Toonami revealed that TPN will make its debut on April 13 at 12:00am Eastern/Pacific, to go along with a significant schedule shakeup by the Adult Swim scheduling department, with Dragon Ball Super, Hunter x Hunter, and Attack on Titan staying put, SAO, Black Clover, and Shippuden moving up at least one spot, and My Hero Academia, Boruto, and JoJo’s moving down at least one spot. See the full schedule below and make sure to make plans and set your DVRs if needed.

Some of the movements have be a bit jarring and can take some time to get used to for some, and let's not even get started on the outrage from JoJo's fans and the salt from SAO and Black Clover haters. According to Jason DeMarco, the schedulers wanted to switch things up based on performance metrics among other things and also told fans that “Something moving to the tail end of the premieres in the block does NOT mean we don’t care about it [and] won’t support it.” Not to mention with other acquisitions coming down the pipe and with some long running shows ending soon, the schedule churn was going to happen sooner or later. As Sam Hinke once said, Trust The Process.

As The Promised Neverland won’t be ready for another week, we’ll have another doubleheader of SAO from 12:30-1:30 am Eastern. We’re not sure if it will be a double premiere of Episodes 9 and 10, or if it will be an encore airing of Episode 8 followed by the premiere of Episode 9, we've heard conflicting reports on the matter. We’ll let you know which one once we can confirm. In addition, Hunter x Hunter will also begin the Hunter Elections arc, the last until the series goes on its “Hiatus x Hiatus”, and Naruto starts heating up wtih Boruto’s School Trip arc and Shippuden’s The Taming of Nine-Tails and Fateful Encounters Arc.

Edit 4/2 @ 12:20 am EDT: We have just confirmed with the help of our media partners at @toonamisquad​ that this week's SAO will showcase be the latter, with an encore of Episode 8 followed by the premiere of Episode 9. Schedule your plans and set your DVRs accordingly. And yes, the infamous Episode 10 will be held off...for now.

Edit 4/3 at 1:45 pm EDT: Turns out Toonami changed their mind and Jason DeMarco confirmed that they actually will have a doubleheader of Episodes 9 and 10, and will edit the infamous episode 10 down for broadcast appropriate standards. All i can say is get ready.

Summary: Ronan is the oldest of six children, born in Limerick where he would grow up until his family moved back to his father’s hometown of Dublin when he was nine years old. When his parents got married, neither of them were ready to have children and it remained that way for twelve years before Malachi’s wife Maggie changed her mind on the idea. It took a little while for Malachi to be come around, having some concerns that he never fully shared with his wife, but eventually he came around and Ronan was born in 1980, the day before his father’s 35th birthday. Ronan had a tough childhood, having been bullied almost mercilessly at school to the point where it became abusive. When Ronan was eight years old, he was being harassed by a twelve year old kid and his friends. The twelve year old once caused Ronan to fracture his wrist while riding his back, chasing Ronan on his own bike until Ronan lost control and fell off. Ronan lied about what happen to him and he never told his parents about the bullying; his parents didn’t find out about the twelve year old’s behavior until it was reported by a friend of Ronan’s to a teacher that the twelve year old had pushed him to the ground, Ronan falling face first which resulted in the scar on his upper lip and chin. Ronan’s parents blamed the school for failing to notice the bullying at school and demanded something be done about the twelve year old (he would be suspended and later taken out of school for his increasingly bad behavior) but also gave Ronan trouble for not telling them about the bullying sooner, though could understand his reasoning for being scared of what the bully would do if he were to tell. Ronan didn’t have to worry about the twelve year old bothering him after that incident as his parents moved their family back to Dublin not long after. When he moved to a different school, Ronan never had a problem with bullying again and his grades increased a lot. He graduated high school and moved on to studying to be a police officer and would eventually be promoted to a homicide detective. When he was 24, he married a woman named Tara O’Neill after dating for only six months. Though the marriage was a bit on the hasty side according to many of his peers, including his father, Ronan had his heart set on Tara, falling deeply in love with her. The marriage lasted for fourteen years until a divorce was filed (by Ronan) after his wife left him for his younger brother Murphy. It was revealed that Tara hadn’t been faithful to Ronan for years, cheating on him with at least 3 men in the past before carrying on a nearly five year affair with his brother. How they managed to keep their affair a secret for five years is a question nobody could answer, and one that Tara refused to answer. Neither Ronan nor his father have spoken to Murphy since the affair was revealed.  In the short time that Ronan and the twins knew each other as kids, they became the closest of friends and relatives. The cousins maintained as much regular contact with each other as they could.
